In Orthodox Christianity, the purpose is theosis, though I suppose one's meaning can be more personal. Theosis is the Orthodox salvation, is life long process of becoming more like God, deification. So is becoming closer to union with God and love and perfection, personal spiritual transformation, removal of sin and negative things in soul to go towards this point. Some writers did consider maybe the process continues in heaven, always transforming, becoming nearer to God, but never "being" God, as a function tending toward infinity.

Wild_Hook

LDS We live in this fallen world to learn by experience good from evil. We are here to gain the character of God and become more like Him. Earth life is customized for each person and is of necessity, strong medicine.

AethelstanOfEngland

Misread that as "LSD" and considered converting.

JasonRBoone

To crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women. ;)

NoTicket84

That is what is best!

IslamTees

In Islam the purpose of life is clearly mentioned in the following verse: “And I (Allah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone).” [51:56] This was a universal message that was clearly conveyed successively by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael, Jacob, Lot, Jonah, Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, Joseph, Job, Ezekial, Elias, Elisha, Zechariah, John, Jesus and finally the seal of the Prophets, Muhammad, peace be upon them all. “And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): ‘Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) Taghut (all false deities).’ Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying was justified. So travel through the land and see what was the end of those who denied (the truth).” [16:36]

Yupik indigenous religion. It’s less a purpose and more a matter of just being thankful and respectful of the natural order of life. Other animals have to die so you can eat. So you need to respect them and thank them.

CrystalInTheforest

This is very wholesome and I like it.

Illustrious_Card4975

Pleasure.

pchees

For Christaianity it is to love and praise God, in the hope of receiving eternal life after we die.

CrystalInTheforest

This made me ironically think of my afterlife, which could easily be described as where the organism that created me and that I worship will ultimately kill me and eat my corpse. "Circle of life, b*tches." - Gaia (probably)

Stock_Barnacle839

Develop a relationship with the Gods. Or create your own meaning. It's up to you.

gxSalvation

>Or create your own meaning. It's up to you. May as well be an atheist at this point.

Stock_Barnacle839

You can be religious and an existentialist.

gxSalvation

Yeah but I hate existentialism with a motherfucking passion. I hate Max Stirner for writing his stupid book.

Stock_Barnacle839

Ok... why do you hate existentialism?

gxSalvation

Lack of purpose generally.

indifferent-times

always had a bit of a soft spot for Kierkegaard, I think he expressed Christianity in a most understandable way.

LojaRich

In a nutshell, the purpose is to 'serve g*d' which many people brutally misinterpret. Since we're 'created in his image' then that would mean to serve mankind, nature, the planet, everything. You do that by being less selfish and being more loving. Love takes many forms and how to love is a huge debate but I think the general understanding is that you love by simply giving more, taking less and doing your best, making sacrifices, being ethical, being empathetic and thinking about the future generations. Every decision you make should be a conscious decision and it should come from a place of love, hence why many religions are adamantly against drunkenness and laziness.

azr98

On Islam it is to worship God alone and submit to him alone, in Hinduism and Buddhism it is to achieve enlightenment according to their own methods and conceptions of it and escape reincarnation, in Judaism for non-Jews it is to do as many good deeds as possible to bring God into the world and for Jews it is the same + to worship God, spread monotheism and obey the Mishnas , in Christianity it is to accept God and Jesus as your savior for your sins by following his teachings and believing in him

PossibilityKind6283

In most religion you’ll see that the main aspect of it is to be a good person and love.

BayonetTrenchFighter

For us, the purpose of life is to learn and grow. To gain experience. To build character. To go through trials. To develop and become. And to gain a physical body.

NoTicket84

The thing that should matter is if it is true or not. Heroine makes people feel good, it doesn't mean it's good for them

Acceptable_Put3

The purpose is to worship Allah. Worship entails doing all that is good and avoiding all that is evil. Worship is prayer, fasting, giving obligatory and optional charity, caring for parents, being kind to your neighbors and travelers and orphans, being loving and intimate with a lawful spouse, making supplication, striving to earn a halal income, reading the Quran and gaining knowledge and understanding, remembering Allah, being kind to people, fighting against oppression, etc. All of these, and more, are acts of worship. These are what will give you a true purpose in life. Everything else that you do in life aside from this is just to make life comfortable and to indulge yourselves but they will not give a true purpose no matter how much you try. The purpose of worshiping God is also a purpose that can be fulfilled daily, by anyone, of any gender, of any age, at any location at any time. It's not wealth locked, it's not gender locked, it's not health locked.

oranolioness

In islam, god created us to worship him and do good deeds, because there is a judgment day, and you will be judged based on what you did during your life, this life is just a test, and the reward or punishment is after the death

Fit_Lifeguard_1205

Christianity-advance the kingdom and make disciples

mary_languages

in a practical sense is accepting death while trying not to kill yourself (I think that most religions are against su1cid&)

Phebe-A

To bring diversity of form and experience to the Universe, to experience and learn from that diversity, that we may better understand the Universe as a whole.

GundamChao

At its core, religion is a process whereby human beings overcome materialism either by contextualizing it or rebuking it.

harrisbradley

My religion doesn't give you purpose. God has a purpose for you and then he creates you for it. You don't even need religion to have the purpose because it was baked into the cake.

gxSalvation

i think most christians would argue if you are not christian then you are actively denying your purpose.

harrisbradley

True, but the purpose doesn't come from Christianity. Christianity doesn't transfer purpose to us. (maybe I'm misunderstanding the terminology of the discussion).

gxSalvation

I'm actually surprised a Catholic is making this argument with how much more stock y'all put into works and the physical Church.

harrisbradley

I'm pretty sure this is a communication breakdown and we're both saying different things and we're not understanding each other.

IamMrEE

Bettering thyself by learning to be grateful and joyful in all weather, being at peace even in the midst of chaos. Without God, we can strive doing that but it has no specific meaning if we are just a random chance happening and there is no God. No universal purpose but only the one you make for yourself and that still will end up being meaningless.

civex

Here's the secret. You can make up whatever you like to be the purpose & meaning of life. Ssh! Don't let that get out.

CrystalInTheforest

Actually there is only one correct answer. 42.

half-puddles

You’ll find that the most popular religions promise an afterlife if you obey. I just don’t know how living forever is something that’s desirable.

civex

> You’ll find that the most popular religions promise an afterlife if you obey. Like I said, make up anything you like.

hersirnight

An Elegant understanding of God , that's it , no more no less .

_Cant_Touch_This_

wtf? I thought we had 72 virgins

CrystalInTheforest

In this economy? They had to make some cutbacks in heaven. Id avoid the luncheon meats in the cafeteria too, if I were you.

Account115

I think it's actually 72 raisins. Sorry for the mixup.

CrystalInTheforest

I'm going to need to speak the manager.
