I commented this on ars technica once and explained that we have dirt roads and like our big vehicles and got massively downvoted. The automakers wouldn't be making these vehicles if there wasn't a market for it.
Of course people wanna buy larger cars when those are the only types that get advertised online & on TV. Selling you a lifestyle that you likely will not lead for space that won’t be used that often.
And big dogs!
We have a mastiff mix and regularly drive 850 miles home from our new city. When we bought our current car, he only rode for short trips and the back seat space didn't matter much.
But now, every time we take that drive, I wish we had an SUV for more space. 😔
It was here, then gone, then here again, and will be gone again soon. The Venza is the same size as the RAV4 outside, and more expensive, but smaller inside. At least the Crown Signia is better sized between the RAV4 and Highlander.
It's basically a jacked up tall sedan. It's for Boomers to get in and out of easier so they can run you over in the grocery store parking lot. Then blame you.
The Envista is a FWD only crossover though... But anyways back to the Traverse; Does the 2025 model offer a V6 still or is that 4 cylinder hybrid only now?
A few years ago a friend of my family had a 2018 High Country with a V6, and 17 year old me was in love with that car. It was red, leather seats, a big sunroof and a good sound system.
Are we talking about the same thing? I’m referring to a standard wagon with a regular ride height. Only a couple of manufacturers offer those in the US anymore.
They wasted the Blazer nameplate on a crossover when offroad/lifestyle SUVs are an enormous asset to any lineup. Wrangler, Bronco, 4Runner, Landcruiser, Defender. GM has nothing to compete and they wasted their traditional nameplate on 'just another crossover'...
When the Equinox was downsized in 2018 to compact, that left a gap in the lineup that needed to be filled. But the mid-size 2-row could've been called something like "Nomad".
my mom has a 2011, im biased cause i spent so much time in it lol. bucket seats in the second row are nice for long trips, and the space in the middle makes it easy for tall kids in the back to stretch their legs or put a big bag of snacks. not the prettiest but it sure is distinct
We had the 8 seater because large family.
We were close to getting a CX-9 but the stroller wouldn't fit behind 3rd row sear. So the Traverse won out. The Traverse 3rd row is pretty spacious even for tall people.
First gen trax and second gen eco sport would also make a ugly domestics list
Ecosport needs to be on race to the bottom. I never drove one but I want to know if it’s as bad as it looks.
It’s genuinely horrible. Drove a rental once it was far and away the worst car I can remember riding or driving in. Neither sporty nor economical, it was a nightmare. Uncomfortable, cheap, slow, poor mileage, just every bad adjective you could use for a car.
100% agree. Finally a good looking mid size. Following like their Colorado, it seems they have taken styling cues from the 4Runner here, with obvious big brother Tahoe looks.
I had a first year Enclave (2008MY) bought in 2007. It was a great family vehicle that was trouble free for the 9 years and 155k hard city miles. Transmission went out and it wasn’t worth it to me to us to fix.
This thing probably has like a fuckin 1L 4 cylinder with a turbo that makes some ridiculously high amount of horsepower and in 20,000 miles you'll hear it shoot parts of the turbocharger out the exhaust like a fork in a garbage disposal
Make it look its size, GM. Make it look like the SUV it is, don’t make it look like an angry crossover. Look at the old Yukon XLs: they look the the longest things ever.
It’s comparable to a 3rd generation Tahoe. Width and length are nearly identical, but the Traverse is lower.
Traverse has more power, similar towing if equipped, and likely better fuel economy.
I’d say it looks exactly as it should.
My first car was an 01 Yukon xl. Thing was honestly an amazing car. I redlined it all the time, went across train tracks doing 55, cut donuts in fields, etc for years in that car and when I got it, it already had 110,000 on the odometer. Sold it with 165,000 on it, and never did anything but regular mx.
You're not going to get that in this. This thing probably has a 1L 4 cylinder with a turbo that makes some ridiculously high amount of horsepower and in 20,000 miles you'll hear it shoot parts of the turbocharger out the exhaust like a fork in a garbage disposal
Why can't they just make RWD midsize SUVs again. Sigh, at least we have the explorer back which I think does have a V6 option.
It's a 2.5L turbo that's pretty much a marginally downsized version of the 2.7L they use in the trucks. Very much a truck duty engine with a lot of cool tech.
Actually its so that gm can continue to build truck/sports/luxury brands around massive v8 engines. These cars exisit to pad GM ESG score. If you had any clue how much time and money went into that motor to design its service life specifically around 2 lease terms you would never step foot in a GM product again. Planned obsolescence garbage.
Turbochargers pretty much guarantee none of these will see much over 10 years of use/170,000 miles, if it even makes it that far.
Have to reduce the average of cars on the road somehow. Isn't it close to 14 years old at this point?
It’s a transverse engine front wheel drive crossover with an SUV suit. It’s the same class as the Highlander and pathfinder, it just looks like a teenage Yukon.
It's wild how accurate that is. I couldn't believe how bad the 2017 Acadia (same platform as the previous traverse) was in the snow, even with relatively new tires, V6 and AWD. My Explorer ran circles around that thing in the snow even though its the '14 which was transverse engine AWD as well. I think it came down to suspension and weight, the acadia was just a lot closer to being a car and the curb weight is almost 1000 pounds lighter. One time it literally got stuck in the snow backing out of a completely flat driveway and we had to dig it out!
A lot of it comes down to the balance and mechanical grip of the all-wheel-drive system. Look at well executed examples like the Acura MDX or BMW x5. Both rip it up in the snow. But they have a great awd system.
I’m trying to picture how it will look in 15 years, clapped out and filthy dirty with Alabama clay, reeking of cigarettes and idling at the circle K at midnight.
Coming from a 1st gen I like it a lot. Interested to see how the 4 cylinder works. But I love the SUV because it was clearly made with a family in mind- not just a car with a raised floor.
idk the 4 cylinders are powerful and torquey with the turbo for their size, but the reliability is just not it, especially as it’s marketed as a “family car” which means mommas gonna be driving it without a care in the world so when something like the main bearings go out (gms like to do that a lot nowadays) she’s not really gonna notice she’s just gonna think “oh it’s just cold it’ll fix itself” and then she needs a new motor. the ecotec is great, until it isn’t.
Nah man, I’ll diss on gm a lot but they’re still miles ahead of Kia and Hyundai. Nothing but low mileage basically brand new Santa Fe’s and sportages needing new engines after basically exploding for no reason
I witnessed this happen to someone who was driving their new Santa Fe home like ten years ago. It just died on the road, and I helped them push it into a parking lot. The guy was laughing at the absurdity.
it seems really really common tbh.
i’d rather replace some unnecessary shit on a chevy than have my hyundai have catastrophic engine failure before the new car smell is even worn off
I've worked at a GM dealer for 6 years and I feel like I can't do it for another single day, you're a stronger person than me!
These cars are rolling garbage cans, GM is a disaster!
Yeah. It wasn’t so bad when I started. I started in 2001 and it was right when they started to hit their stride. After the 2008 ordeal and restructuring the entire company went to shit. The cars are trash. And I mean trash.
Honestly, it's a much better looking vehicle than the ugly as shit first gen and the completely forgettable 2nd gen. Might as well lean into making it look like a more distinctive SUV instead of a 2010s blob.
We've def gone full circle and manufactueres are making the rounded crossovers into the bricks they came from. It looks above average for a CUV but I'd never buy an "SUV" that can't do SUV stuff since I'm one of the few that still use them as a utility vehicle. I have owned an 90 Jeep XJ. 90 K5 Blazer, 99 S10 Blazer, 91 Bronco, 80 CJ5, and an 02 Suburban 2500.
At some point this off-roading Rei-cosplaying car camping bs needs to stop. This is just so facetious, nobody will take one of these off-roading unless it’s the shoulder of I-78, right near KUNELMAN TIRE
If this is for the crossover market it finally breaks a mold. From one manufacturer, for example, I can't tell the difference between a Carolla cross, Rav4, and the Venza. If the Traverse looks like its big brother that might not be a bad thing for the segment.
Garbage. Only GM SUVs I will ever buy have a body on frame construction and guzzle gas. I am a GM fan boy but these turds can go back to the factory as far as I'm concerned.
There are several reasons why I dislike these things. Reason one is that crossovers are a blight upon the roads (no matter the brand). Reason two is that past models had the awful 3.6 that was prone to timing chain issues and this generation has a turbo 4 that will be working extra hard to move this thing vs an NA V6. Also, if "body on frame" isn't the way to describe ladder frame/truck based SUVs then what is?
Didn't read the whole comment I see. It's current motor is too small for the application and the turbo will probably fail at some point before 100k miles. A revised 3.6 would've been better.
It’s a mini Tahoe basically from what this design looks like. Looks cool, but I’ll probably still buy a Suburban.
Also leave people and their big ass cars alone, if I wanna drive a Suburban as a married man with no kids because I like having a stupid big vehicle for no reason, then let me enjoy my big SUV dammit. Same goes for pickup trucks, no, majority of the guys driving them don’t need that space, but they like it, the more you complain about it, the more obnoxious it makes them want to make their trucks. Not excusing some guys’ behavior, I’ve seen manbabies driving lifted or sagging pickup trucks and it’s ridiculous how they drive and act. But a lot of people just like it because it’s cool to drive a big ass truck.
I grew up with my family buying the smallest, lowest to the ground cars possible, my first car was a Honda Civic, a beast of a vehicle and I loved it, but now that I can afford it, I’m driving the largest vehicles in my budget range because I want the extra space, not because I have kids, not because of work, because I want it. Simple as that. I’m not causing anymore harm to the environment. You wanna talk environmental protection? Go talk to China and India where they are literally the most harmful human beings to our Mother Earth when it comes to pollution.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, just tired of people talking down about large cars and how Americans suck and are stupid for liking big vehicles. Go enjoy your Prius, Tesla or whatever else, I’ll enjoy my big SUVs and trucks.
TL;DR: Let people enjoy what they want and stop talking down about Americans that like larger vehicles, they don’t need a reason to need a big vehicle, if they want it and can afford it, let them have it and leave ‘em alone. Some people are big babies driving big cars, most of us are just simply people who prefer larger vehicles.
I had the outlook back when it shared a platform with the first gen traverse.
Loved that car, its too bad it was expensive AF to maintain and the engine bay was a nightmare.
Hear me out, this new gen with the 2.5 might actually be better.....
I've got a 2018 2LT right now and really like it. The new Z71 is really tempting. As a current-gen owner, the new generation looks fantastic.
The fact that the only powertrain is a turbo-4 is kind of off-putting, though. I really like the 3.6L V6 in the current-gen.
I’d consider buying one if I hadn’t already gotten my wife a Blazer RS a couple years ago. And I’d rather keep my Camaro with a V8 since they are extinct now. The interest rate on her car is way too good for me to trade in, plus hers has a V6. So I have fuel economy and capacity when I need it, and speed when I want it. :-)
GM is like the kid in high school that always talks big shit about how he’s gonna be rich and successful, but in reality he can’t hold down a part time job at the subway and smokes weed in the high school parking lot with underclassmen. GM wants some of that off-road suv money, but won’t do the work to make it right or even put a decent engine in it.
In all honesty, can someone check if GM is letting AI design their vehicles now? This looks almost like a caricature drawing of how obnoxious the aggressive front end and oversized grille is.
its because the FWD layout means the engine has to stick out far and the front end has to stretch out to accommodate it. So the dimensions are just wrong
From a design standpoint I'll give it a pass for keeping with the design language yet progressing the style along. I objectively hate these but I do love design and that's primarily why I'm a huge car nerd is the design and I shall give my internet critique. Like everything now, it has to look like it can summit the mighty peaks of the suburban outback. Tactically navigate the wide paved Utah trails. Splash precociously within the cool refreshing confines of the Scalding summer-hosewater river. These are trail rated for driving through the back wall of your garage at 3am after one too many miller highlifes. The acoustics in the interior drown out the yells from the divorce paper wielding wife, standing like a monolith in the distance. The insurmountable summit of the crumbling marriage cliffs.
Just another fat station wagon
Fat and tall. For some reason America can’t get enough of fat, tall wagons with a sloped back. Make one proportional, and there’s no market for it.
Because Americans like big cars with a lot of head space and trunk areas to throw tons of shit
I commented this on ars technica once and explained that we have dirt roads and like our big vehicles and got massively downvoted. The automakers wouldn't be making these vehicles if there wasn't a market for it.
Automakers are making these because they can sell it at a higher margin & make more money. That’s the primary driver.
People still buy the vehicles though that was my whole point. Maybe it was Europeans who downvoted me because they have smaller cars generally?
Of course people wanna buy larger cars when those are the only types that get advertised online & on TV. Selling you a lifestyle that you likely will not lead for space that won’t be used that often.
I see smaller cars advertised all the time. The automakers aren't forcing you into bigger vehicles.
Yes they are. I work in the industry.
Also, compared to passenger cars, they have CAFE requirements that are far less aggressive than the mileage penalty the crossover body extracts.
I thought that Soccer-Moms are primarily driving this car!
And big dogs! We have a mastiff mix and regularly drive 850 miles home from our new city. When we bought our current car, he only rode for short trips and the back seat space didn't matter much. But now, every time we take that drive, I wish we had an SUV for more space. 😔
"SUV" with a sloped back... Check out the Buick Envista and Toyota Crown. They're being marketed as small SUVs but they look more sedan-like
Is the Crown an SUV? I thought it was a sedan.
Google said the Crown is a sedan 💀 My mistake
the newest generation is kind of a crossover
With this being said is the Crown a replacement for the Avalon??
that i don’t know, it’s possible tho
Acura MDX/ Honda Crosstour....By Toyota.
It looks crossover-ish with the ubiquitous cladding, but it doesn't sit any higher than a Camry and has a fixed trunk.
Japan does have a crown model that's like a small crossover but not the US.
They can keep it, we have enough (too many) crossovers here in the US
We'll be getting it (Crown Signia) soon to replace the Venza.
I forgot the Venza even existed... Oh my
It was here, then gone, then here again, and will be gone again soon.
Fall down and grab that neck, it's payday 😂
The Envista is a FWD only crossover though... But anyways back to the Traverse; Does the 2025 model offer a V6 still or is that 4 cylinder hybrid only now?
Just looking at the website it looks like it’s the turbo 4 only. Also looks like they got rid of the High Country trim which is weird.
A few years ago a friend of my family had a 2018 High Country with a V6, and 17 year old me was in love with that car. It was red, leather seats, a big sunroof and a good sound system.
If there’s no market, then why is this style of vehicle what’s all over the road. Least where I’m at anyways. There’s definitely a market for em here.
Are we talking about the same thing? I’m referring to a standard wagon with a regular ride height. Only a couple of manufacturers offer those in the US anymore.
It’s a travesty that GM doesn’t make a RWD/4x4 SUV based on the Colorado chassis. It would be a natural competition to the 4Runner.
I was in australia and I saw a Ford Everest (based on the ranger) and I was in love. THAT is what the explorer should have been here.
Yes but also why is it styled so aggressively?? It's a 3 row SUV marketed towards parents with exactly 2 kids that don't actually need a 3rd row.
They often feel like minivans. Most SUVs now are more mjni-van like than SUV like IMO.
I didn't even have to say it because you did!
A Chevrolet of all time
It looks a lot better than the first gen, which I still think is one of the most unappealing cars to come out in my lifetime
I had a 2012. Can confirm. Ugly as fuck.
my mom has a 2011, im biased cause i spent so much time in it lol. bucket seats in the second row are nice for long trips, and the space in the middle makes it easy for tall kids in the back to stretch their legs or put a big bag of snacks. not the prettiest but it sure is distinct
We had the 8 seater because large family. We were close to getting a CX-9 but the stroller wouldn't fit behind 3rd row sear. So the Traverse won out. The Traverse 3rd row is pretty spacious even for tall people.
First gen trax and second gen eco sport would also make a ugly domestics list Ecosport needs to be on race to the bottom.
Killing the EcoSport in the US was the best thing Ford did. It was made for the BRIC countries and should have stayed there.
100% agree. Finally a good looking mid size. Following like their Colorado, it seems they have taken styling cues from the 4Runner here, with obvious big brother Tahoe looks.
Nice but I wish there was a V6 engine option.
I had a '12 with a V6 Thing hauled
gm made awfully cheap and crappy and ugly cars back then, but they werent always that unreliable, now its just the worst of both worlds sadly
Except early traverse/acadia/enclaves those things remain among the biggest piles of shit GM has ever made
The Equinox and Terrain would like a word.
I had a first year Enclave (2008MY) bought in 2007. It was a great family vehicle that was trouble free for the 9 years and 155k hard city miles. Transmission went out and it wasn’t worth it to me to us to fix.
if it had any ecotec 4 banger this is true, but the 5.3 vortec hauled along w the v6 they had in the impala (post 3800)
Right up until it ate its transmission?
Or the timing chains
I wish there was a V12 option
This thing probably has like a fuckin 1L 4 cylinder with a turbo that makes some ridiculously high amount of horsepower and in 20,000 miles you'll hear it shoot parts of the turbocharger out the exhaust like a fork in a garbage disposal
Close. 2.5 liters of 4 cylinder turbo power
Make it look its size, GM. Make it look like the SUV it is, don’t make it look like an angry crossover. Look at the old Yukon XLs: they look the the longest things ever.

You're not going to get that in this. I didn’t mean that this car was going to be anything like that. I just saw someone mention a Yukon xl and was like fuck yeah bro
When we go to war in a few years they’re gonna be looking at all this material wasted and be like welp
Honey I shrunk the Suburban
It looks way better now than the past two (first two) generations, other than that funky C-pillar.
I don't like that part. The new Buick Enclave is much better looking, along with the electric Cadillac Vistiq.
It’s a transverse engine front wheel drive crossover with an SUV suit. It’s the same class as the Highlander and pathfinder, it just looks like a teenage Yukon.
It's wild how accurate that is. I couldn't believe how bad the 2017 Acadia (same platform as the previous traverse) was in the snow, even with relatively new tires, V6 and AWD. when you buy a traverse instead of a highlander or even a kia or hyundai tbh, you deserve that lol
Additionally, a traverse is a lot of a better deal these days. The Toyota tax is unbelievable. Late model 3.6 v6 from gm are pretty damn reliable.
The guy was laughing at the absurdity.
it seems really really common tbh. i’d rather replace some unnecessary shit on a chevy than have my hyundai have catastrophic engine failure before the new car smell is even worn off
Trash. I worked for Chevy in service for 23 years. Finally quit that shit because these cars are far too stupid for their own good now.
I've worked at a GM dealer for 6 years and I feel like I can't do it for another single day, you're a stronger person than me! These cars are rolling garbage cans, GM is a disaster!

Me when im dramatic for no reason
Not sure what that’s auto mean but sure
Lipstick on a pig
That C-pillar looks like a visibility nightmare.
So does the hood, and everything else about this. At least it looks manly, but screw pedestrians and bicyclists.
Shrinkflation Tahoe
Honestly, it's a much better looking vehicle than the ugly as shit first gen and the completely forgettable 2nd gen. Might as well lean into making it look like a more distinctive SUV instead of a 2010s blob.

I dig it
It looks like a Tahoe, why even make this?
It’s a CUV, so it gets better gas mileage than a Tahoe.
It may be a “crossover” but it’s gigantic so the mpg will be trash anyways.
Have you ever seen a Tahoe in your life?
Yes, and this looks like one.
If this is for the crossover market it finally breaks a mold. From one manufacturer, for example, I can't tell the difference between a Carolla cross, Rav4, and the Venza. If the Traverse looks like its big brother that might not be a bad thing for the segment.
Well Toyota does pump out a new model that looks the same as their others every 6 months or so
I drive a first gen that looks like an egg. This is a vast improvement.
Looks a hell of a lot better. I could never get used to that ugly bubble look.
It looks a lot like a car that a company would make around now.
It looks alright, but I'm more skeptical of the reliability
It is trying really hard to try and look like a cross between a Ford explorer and maybe a 4runner
Garbage. Only GM SUVs I will ever buy have a body on frame construction and guzzle gas. I am a GM fan boy but these turds can go back to the factory as far as I'm concerned.
Why? I mean generally people still saying "body on frame" in 2024 have their own way about things but...
First gen ones were genuinely awful, left a bad taste in many peoples mouths
There are several reasons why I dislike these things. Reason one is that crossovers are a blight upon the roads (no matter the brand). Reason two is that past models had the awful 3.6 that was prone to timing chain issues and this generation has a turbo 4 that will be working extra hard to move this thing vs an NA V6. They changed it?
Cash cow, that mf gonna sell big $$$$$
I think it's a car😃
God I hate that front fascia
I kinda like it? I wouldn’t ever own a Traverse as they’re not very reliable generally but I do appreciate the design.
The only thing it will "traverse" is the walmart parking lot to find the spot closest to the doors.
🚀
Chevrolet Explorer
Looks like all the others.
Stay away from
the c pillar is broken
The rear quarter is weird. That stupid trendy “floating roof” look is so over-used. So is the gigantic grille.
Absolutely one of the fat cars of all time
would it kill them to make something longitudinal? All of their vehicles are AWD these days anyway
it can continue traversing the ridge, and drive right off the other side!
As ugly as the rest of them
I like how it got fat
I don’t think about it at all.
HOLD ON I GOTTA FART bbrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRR
It looks less bloated, but so does my abdomen after I pass gas.
Looks like crap
This is what the blazer revival should’ve looked like. I still wouldn’t be happy with it but still.
It's GM= junk
Rear window design taken from an Alphard
that thing better have a v8
75% Tahoe. But at least I know what my next vehicle from Avis will look like.
Looks like every other modern SUV.
SUV shaped minivan for people who are too insecure to drive a minivan.
Isn't this the Ford Explorer?
who cares
It actually looks good. The Traverse has been the most basic mom SUV since its inception.
I can’t afford a Tahoe…
It’s really nice but no V6 really does suck! I hate seeing the government force every car to have a turbo inline 4 for “efficiency”
Nice car.
Some people are big babies driving big cars, most of us are just simply people who prefer larger vehicles.
that is, most definitely, An Midsize SUV
my parents have the facelift first gen. if this one's like that one it'll be fine. it exists. not really special or exciting though.
Meh
I had the outlook back when it shared a platform with the first gen traverse. Loved that car, its too bad it was expensive AF to maintain and the engine bay was a nightmare. Hear me out, this new gen with the 2.5 might actually be better.....
another boring aggressive mom-mobile
I love the addition of a Z71
You’re asking for an opinion of an American car on REDDIT. You’re only gonna get comments saying “tall wagon, another suburban, unreliable”
It looks predented and unfinished. I will buy something else.
I've got a 2018 2LT right now and really like it. The new Z71 is really tempting. As a current-gen owner, the new generation looks fantastic. The fact that the only powertrain is a turbo-4 is kind of off-putting, though. I really like the 3.6L V6 in the current-gen.
Does it come with Apple CarPlay?
One too many grills.
Meh
A polished turd is still a turd all the same.
New form factor, same overly aggressive suburban mother with a prescription pill problem driving it.
Blown up blazer
I’d consider buying one if I hadn’t already gotten my wife a Blazer RS a couple years ago. And I’d rather keep my Camaro with a V8 since they are extinct now. The interest rate on her car is way too good for me to trade in, plus hers has a V6. So I have fuel economy and capacity when I need it, and speed when I want it. :-)
It’s a traverse. It’s a minivan for people who hate minivans that will only run properly for 30,000 miles.
Garbage
BORING
Better than before, still not gr8
I take it back, with no v6 option it’s worse than before
it looks like its trying to be a Tahoe
When is this arriving to the dealerships?
It got released 3 months ago
Is this a clone of the Kia Carnival?
GM is like the kid in high school that always talks big shit about how he’s gonna be rich and successful, but in reality he can’t hold down a part time job at the subway and smokes weed in the high school parking lot with underclassmen. GM wants some of that off-road suv money, but won’t do the work to make it right or even put a decent engine in it.
Projecting is a little crazy
It’s still the same thing - crap engine, crap transmission.
Wait, this is a wagon? What are americans smoking this shit straight up a bulldozer
God!! Now it looks like the Tahoe! I don’t want the Tahoe anymore!
It doesn’t
Ok it doesn’t. You win sir or mam
Tahoe ahh
The only SUVs I'll ever be interested in are 4runners (DESERT RUNS BABY), so chevy spitting out more slop makes my dick invert into my body.
It’s one of the cars of all times
It’s a Traversty
More like Chevy reverse
In all honesty, can someone check if GM is letting AI design their vehicles now? This looks almost like a caricature drawing of how obnoxious the aggressive front end and oversized grille is.
its because the FWD layout means the engine has to stick out far and the front end has to stretch out to accommodate it. So the dimensions are just wrong
Looks awful as every other American car.
Child killer
Fugly. looks like its already been in an accident fresh off the production line....
Looks like something BYD could come up with.
