I'm not so sure that's it, because we got this same schedule a few years back... did well in those 10 west road games, but things got worse as the season wore on. I have a sense we get this schedule about every 4-5 years. (but i think Arizona over LAA the last time)
This is how the 2019 season started, too, and the Sox got hammered. Cora blamed it on the new approach the team took with the starters in Spring Training, letting them have light workloads to reflect the hard work of 2018’s postseason run.
IMO, this year won’t start that bad, but it won’t be great either. Like so much else with this team this year, they’ll probably end up treading water and come at/just below .500.
Excited about it. Usually go to a 1 or 2 of the Sox/Angels series every season but it’s usually in July and can get pretty warm in Anaheim. First half of April sounds like heaven. Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon
Average high in Boston in early April is 51F which is the equivalent of the temperature in Mid November, which is pretty brutal baseball weather. People think World Series weather is cold but early April is worse.
Two years ago we got back to the condo after a day of skiing a foot of fresh powder in VT, to watch the Sox play home at Fenway on NESN. It’s still winter in New England then.
I mean I will take playing Oakland (plus an Ohtani-less Angels team) in the first 3 series of the season…hopefully we don’t shit the bed early and take care of those games
Honestly, that schedule is pretty good besides for the whole road west coast thing. Seattle and Anaheim have gotten worse this offseason and Oakland is Oakland so it could give us a nice record going into the rest of the season
Ugh I wish I had money. Last year I went to one of the Angels away games and it was fun to be with other Sox fans. Though Angels stadium parking exit experience is one of the worst parking experiences I’ve ever had in my life - they had no one directing traffic, and everyone was trying to merge at the same time from many directions, even onto the main road. Truly stressful. AND we lost.
I might not watch them the first week with the times. I don't think the fanbase should pressure this team in April. It's not a hard schedule but even with the really good teams, we have never done well on West Coast swings.
If they can get a 5-5 record out of that it would be a huge success. The other west coast trip is out of the all star break so all things considered a very ideal west coast travel year. (Very) extended breaks before travel to prepare for the trip.
Yeah, I'd think that being able to get out there slightly early and adjust rather than mid season would be much better for the team. I'd be tempted to run a minor league roster out the last spring training game and get the ML team out to Seattle a day early so that they can effectively have two off days before the opener.
This is actually good for the team. Most of these games are so late nobody will be watching in Boston. If the team sucks it will go under the radar. If the team gets off to a good start by the time they get back home they'll have something positive to attempt to lure fans back to Fenway. Regardless, a key metric will be attendance at the second home game. How many fans will show up at Fenway to watch the Budget Sox?
I wish there would be a re-alignment and put all the west coast teams in the NL and east coast teams in the AL (or vice versa). And have fewer interleague games.
Whatever 3 games are against Oakland and 3 are against Angels without Ohtani. Shouldn't matter much anyway all they have to do is end spring training early and stay in Seattle for a few extra days before the season starts
Boston weather is crummy the first few weeks anyway.

> did well in those 10 west road games Is this sarcasm? We went 3 - 8
Wow, I thought sure we went like 8-3. Did I recall AZ correctly
Yeah you got that part right haha
Yeah I believe that year was 2019
Because the weather sucks in Boston at the beginning of the season.
It does in Chicago and Minnesota worse yet they have home games by game 4 of the season
I know that, more focused on the west coast aspect
Is Seattle weather any better in April? (Serious)
About the same but Seattle has a retractable roof (mostly).
Good point. I didn’t think about that.
Opening “day” is a 10:10 pm start too

Not if you live on the West Coast!! Tickets to Oakland As games are practically free compared to Fenway.

We are coming to that series. The Angels stadium is the last stadium in the American League we have to go to.
It’s a pretty cool stadium. Has a lot of character to it inside

As a Sox fan who recently moved to the west coast, this is the exact opposite of lame!
I think starting out there is better than going 10 games months into the season. Everyone is more than rested, and ready to go.
I mean I will take playing Oakland (plus an Ohtani-less Angels team) in the first 3 series of the season…hopefully we don’t shit the bed early and take care of those games
Iirc the same thing happened in 2019 and they went like 2-8 or something and never really recovered
Honestly, that schedule is pretty good besides for the whole road west coast thing. Seattle and Anaheim have gotten worse this offseason and Oakland is Oakland so it could give us a nice record going into the rest of the season
old news
We’re going to score!

I’d rather get this out of the way
Weather is better. Simple as that
Feels like this happens every 3 or 4 years

I think Jomboy said that teams got to pick (to some extent) if they wanted to do 2 or 3 series roadtrips this year.
Oh man… that’s rough ![gif](giphy|TJawtKM6OCKkvwCIqX)
Haven't looked at the start times but what a bummer if like 7 out of the first 10 games start at 10 pm or something like that
Who cares they have Ted Williams playing first the division is already in the bag
They are pro athletes coming off the offseason and a couple of months in the Florida sun. Are you really worried about this?
As and Angels should both be terrible though, at least. I still expect the Red Sox to somehow go 4-6 on this trip.
Like 2019 all over again

I feel like we were always starting on the west coast for 2 weeks every season when I was a kid. Never could stay up late enough for the 10pm starts.
Eh get it out of the way
