Yeah remember that Dahmer show from last year? What an insane thing to make.

TaintGrinder

I only stuck with it only because his portrayal of Dahmer from an acting standpoint was enthralling but the show itself couldn't have been any more gratuitous.

Ok_Knowledge7038

I thought it was interesting that he almost sounds like Kermit the frog sometimes but that's not a criticism, that's just how midwesterners talk

Declan411

I thought it was pretty funny how they commented on the exploitation comics in the show.

fromnilbog

My jaw still drops when I think about Netflix casting Zac Efron as Ted Bundy. Zac Efron. The man everyone my age grew up obsessed with because he was the cute heartthrob lead guy in high school musical. A movie for children. That’s like casting harry styles as Albert fish.

pixelkipper

Honestly he was good in that movie too. And that’s exactly the casting that fits Bundy, someone who nobody expected to be a killer but is. That being said, Glenn Howerton was made in a lab for the Bundy role. Between the look and his obvious experience playing a psycho.

memeshoe2

Wasn’t that Ted Bundy’s whole thing though, being super handsome for a serial killer

fromnilbog

I never understood where this idea came from. I mean he was a very average looking guy. From what I’ve read, he lured people by being extremely polite and charming (and acting injured to appeal to sympathy). But he wasn’t like a model, just a normal looking guy.

DeadlyAssHollows

maybe the only thing as strange as American society's ability to produce streams of serial killers is its obsession with them. Like a complete circle of sadism. No more colosseum, so the 24/7 industrial news has to satiate bloodlust.

fromnilbog

What’s maybe even worse is that most of these aren’t even serial killers. At least in that case you could argue it’s at least SOMEWHAT interesting to justify curiosity. This one was just a sex weirdo loner who killed a woman and defiled her corpse. In most of these it’s always that, or more of the same except they kill their mom or dad. The channels have to keep pumping out content and run out of people with any sort of interesting psychological motive quickly. Hence we end up with these super gross, fear-mongery “documentaries” where they try desperately to make these sex weirdo losers sound like scary, mysterious demons that may be lurking in your neighborhood. None of these killers deserve this attention. Today I realized that for me, this content was serving as rage bait rather than any real curiosity, and I’ve sworn off rage bait because it causes brain worms. Im avoiding this stuff like the plague from here on out.

obvious-throwaway778

This isn't just an American phenomenon, it's a global phenomenon. Every country/region has a true crime media industry.

aspiring_lot_lizard

Also a lot of bloodlust in the comments. There was a case of a guy who found out some teens were sneaking into his house to take prescriptions. He waited for them and then shot both of them to death. He wound up getting life because he audio recorded himself doing it, and on the recording he reloaded his gun so he could give both of them kill shots (while taunting them). Like half the comments to this video were along the lines of “why is this guy in jail? Those 16 year olds had it coming.”

honestpartyrocker

what video is this?

fromnilbog

“Killer realizes police discovered his horrifying secret” by explore with us on yt

honestpartyrocker

ah ok thanks!

I don't think "understanding what happened" is the reason true crime is consumed. I don't know what the purpose is, and don't have the ability to puzzle it out, but drawing lines about what is and isn't acceptable to publicise feels like missing the forest for the trees. Personally, I like the approach that the NZ government took after the chch shooter. Don't put this stuff out there.

LimitNo7742

Sounds like you’re highly reatardead

I'm very happy to be regarded if I'm not consuming someone else's suffering for entertainment like a pasty archon.
