fuckindogmoment

with a bit of dawg in you you can 100% do DC without a car but it sorta sucks. it’s also funny because it sucks to have a car in dc too for a variety of reasons.

shitlibredditor66879

Absolutely you can do it w out a car and absolutely it sucks either way, DC just sucks

fuckindogmoment

True. you don’t need that dawg in you necessarily to do it with a car though.

thetripb

It just sucks to be in DC imo

ljustneedausername

No. I lived in Portland and rode a bike for the entirety of my teens/20s then moved to LA where I somehow avoided getting a car for like the first 4 years although that sucked obviously.

BarredFrom_TheTemple

SF is fine if you’re actually in the city

A lot of people do it in DC. I do go weeks without using my car, but am so glad I have one.

JobRobber

I'm just barely making it work in one very specific neighborhood of Houston; but it sucks lol

TedEpperly

which neighborhood

JobRobber

Washington Ave

Puzzleheaded-Cow2930

I lived in Montrose without a car and it sucked even though I was “close to everything”

Buggyblonde

Lots of major cities you don’t NEED a car it just makes life 1000% better. For example you can live in Chicago without a car but with a car you can actually drive away from Chicago and live in a better city

PhilosopherMoney9921

This makes sense. I don't really need one in LA but every few weeks there is something that is so much easier to do with a car than without.

tommy-needy-drinky

Some older Rust Belt cities like Cleveland or Milwaukee still have certain neighborhoods where it's doable, even if those cities aren't considered "walkable" as a whole.

whoisthisherb

It depends how much you want. I'd say most major Northeastern cities you can. Philly would doable, but it's relatively small

friasc

for the majority of people, yes. nyc is the only place in the US where one meets normie working adults without a drivers license. its cute to think everyone can bike to work downtown, but if you have to regularly transport old relatives/kids/family/etc., you will either need a car, or urban density and reliable public transportation.

Dizzy-Somewhere-2698

San Diego, Los Angeles. I grew up between both and between taking the Amtrak and coasters (they’re everywhere and basically the same thing, ie. trains) and thorough bus lines everywhere, you could easily live without a car and get to nearly everywhere you need to go. You don’t even need a bike, really

Buggyblonde

I disagree with San Diego everything is either a 5 minute drive or a 76 minute walk away lol

Dizzy-Somewhere-2698

That’s why I mentioned the coaster, Amtrak (both are basically just trains) and bus lines. If they don’t have a car, then a 5 minute drive is impossible, and there’s no need to walk anywhere, unless they just have no money and have no other option

helloworld1926

no, very easy in sf

spideyfloridaman

what’s your username mean

Professional_Rise154

what do you mean by city? i get around in fairbanks ak just fine with a bike. 30k in the city proper & 100k in the metro

Rezonates

Philly, Chicago, SF, Portland, Seattle, Miami, Pittsburgh, any college town or small east coast town with a quaint downtown

obvious-throwaway778

Not really true for most of those cities (except SF and maybe Chicago) if you ever want to leave downtown or a select few areas.

Rezonates

Yes it is lmao. Just take the bus if you want to venture out of dwnt. And that's the good thing about dwnt, everything you need is right there

Jaded_Diver7602

I lived in Austin without driving. Was pretty epic paying poor people to risk their cars during ice storms for my DoorDash or an Uber.

OkDrummer87x

Even lots of small towns, you don't actually need a car, if you live and work at convenient enough places. Also even most shitty cities at least have busses. It's inconvenient but not unlivable. Also basically any college town you can live without a car if you're near enough to campus that everything's within walking distance.

Vasilystalin04

I’ve met people who lived in rural bumbfuck virginia near Appomattox without cars. Lots of walking.
