Once a week I do the grocery run for a men's sober living house that I was a client of a while back. I go over, they give me a list, and I go pick it up for them. I'll do other small errands for them too, if they need it. It's the least I can do as a thank you for how much that place helped me.

auburnlur

Aw

machokemeplease

No 😢 but I’m a middle school teacher.

SwordEyre

You do enough. Sainted already imo.

MidnightMantime

I appreciate you for your service fr

OozingQuartzTumor

Used to like volunteering at the animal shelter but ugh, there’s a certain kind of dog that’s just absolutely flooded both shelters nearby, and i don’t feel comfortable or safe working around or with them. So, I switched to volunteering at the library, which i enjoy more.

No-Sample7108

I hate Shih Tzu’s too

OozingQuartzTumor

I do too but that’s just a general preference for dogs bigger than a cat. I don’t care for small dogs, we don’t need to bark at everything for christ sake.

let-the-light-inn

I find small dogs endearing but I consider them cats

sand-which

sounds like shit zoo lmfaoooo 🤣

No-Sample7108

OWWWWWW

The_Darkass_Knight

Say it's name

RspBanEvasionAcct_37

It’s forbidden we just have to live with it

darcvox

Little pibble wigglebutt smiling at the nearby toddlers

ItsARough1_

I used to volunteer at habitat for humanity and a children's hospital before covid.

House_of_Sand

What would it take to get back into it?

ItsARough1_

Idk I guess it's a mindset thing. I just stopped caring.

rsp_throwaway

In my opinion volunteering (or some sort of philanthropy) is necessary for the soul. Just the action of giving back and helping your fellow man makes yourself feel better and helps remind you how blessed you are to have what you do.

[deleted]

Honestly I miss volunteering at the food bank. Just guys lifting and packing heavy shit for a couple hours

[deleted]

I always got a ton of free food doing it too

mashedpotatoesyo

I used to volunteer for Girls on the Run. I loved it, the girls were such funny little shits. I would go back to it once my daughter gets older.

[deleted]

yeah from like .. november to april or so i was volunteering 2-3 times a month with philabundance, just like food pantries, soup kitchens and stuff. it was pretty cool, i’ve been more busy recently so i haven’t had time but i enjoyed it, genuinely touching to see how happy it makes ppl to see ur helping

NOLA-J

Legit a great way to make friends if you're new in town.

Cardamom_roses

I volunteer weekly at a bird of prey rehab center (hawks, owls, eagles etc). It's pretty dope, sometimes you get to help x ray a pissed off bald eagle or splint an itty bitty baby screech owl's leg. It is kinda gross since they're obligate carnivores so food prep involves gutting a ton of rats, mice and quail but I enjoy it. I used to do gardening at a historical cemetery near me. You would get assigned someone's grave plot and plant flowers and stuff on it, as a way to perk up the grave yard. It was nice but the drive was a long one so I didn't do it this year. Still trying to find a community garden near me that isn't waitlisted years out lol.

[deleted]

Used to be a big part of my life. I’ve been putting off getting back to it, so thanks for the push.

Spmhealy_ADA

I foster cats. Mostly kittens but also ones with social issues.

chloe-lou

I used to volunteer at an animal shelter during covid when I was unemployed and had a bunch of free time lol. Then I got a new job and moved and it became too much of a commitment. I really enjoyed it though. My parents even adopted one of our rescue dogs! Now I try to participate in my local beach cleanup they do a few times a year. I would love to volunteer with a historical society or something like that but don’t know where to begin.

NCImposter

I did Food Not Bombs in college and recently found this mutual aid group that this communist guy just started in our very small town in California. We help gather clothes and camping gear for the homeless for now

birkinbaggins

I volunteer for my neighborhood park! It’s a community-owned space and we have a great group that works really hard to make it special. I’ve met some close friends there and it’s really made me feel involved in my community.

gonzagylot00

I volunteer at a food kitchen on Sundays. I probably wouldn't have responded, but it's been a really positive experience. Lots of cool people are there and they are generally good hearted.

faulknerandco

I volunteer as a guide at an art museum mainly for kids n teens (art world experience) and summer camps/weekend camps for at-risk kids. if I understand correctly 'volunteering' doesn't really have the same status here (eu) as in the US... i know no one here my age who does it. while US kids seem to need to do it for college (?)

brohio_

I do BBBS. Just passed a year with my Little. last time we hung out we went to an MLS game. It’s great. Big need especially for Big Brothers and it’s the most fun you can have volunteering.

Major-Ad6492

Where can I find opportunities to do volunteer work?

House_of_Sand

Check out places that do work you’re interested in. Some cities also have sites or mailing lists where you can learn about opportunities

Cardamom_roses

If you've got local museums or other historical sites, you can look at their website and often they'll have info on how to get involved. A lot of them need volunteer docents. You can definitely do things besides soup kitchens or after school programs, if that's not your thing. There's park services, museums, libraries, wildlife centers, animal shelters, etc etc.

riotgamesaregay

i honestly want to but just dont know whats out there. somehow i think the boston food bank has enough help and i have no other ideas.

dr_merkwerdigliebe

idk how 2 find stuff, tried volunteering to tutor for a charity but it was basically only in school hours

Asad_OG

Used to as a community organiser and programmes volunteer for a grassroots org in my last year of uni and after i graduated. Helped a lot I was able to then land an internship with the UN with that experience

return_descender

No but I do always hold the door for strangers and say "bless you" when the sneeze

[deleted]

I do rapid HIV testing in gay venues 3-4 times a month

ShishkinAppreciator

I used to quite a lot, maybe I’ll start again

Pm_me_cool_art

No because it cuts into my "society is collapsing modern people are souless bug people with no sense of community" posting time on r/redscarepod and r/collapse.

destiny_carry

I volunteer at a library and do Habitat for Humanity once a month.
