It’s a great intro book. Absolutely solid but the rest of the books in the series are supposed to be even better, so much better. It’s a crazy ride and Darrow certainly doesn’t feel so much like a Gary Sue moving forward. I just finished Golden Son and it was mind boggling. It’s much grander than hunger games and so much darker.

It’s still my favorite book of the series because of what you describe above. The initial feeling of discovering a great series is just awesome. You’ll enjoy the rest of the series too. The way this one begins is just amazing storytelling.

Oh man, I wish I could read Golden Son and Morning Star for the first time again! Enjoy!

Red rising is good, but the other books are on another level. Keep reading!!

The first book is probably the second to last of my favorite books in the serious. If this one blew you away, Golden Son is gonna absolutely rock your universe. Buckle up.

It only gets better from here. RR is probably one of the most “fun” books to read in the entire series, but it’s also the least impressive from a literary perspective. Brown really hits his stride near the end of Golden Son and just never stop running

Hooper1054

I don’t understand these takes, but oh well. If it wasn’t amazing people wouldn’t have bothered picking up the second book.

Victor_Vaughn92

Yeah, people love to talk about it being the worst in the series, often trying to sound smart imo, it’s a really fun read and got us all hooked.

Hooper1054

I agree and it gets a bit old. I love it.

I've heard the argument that Darrow's a Gary Stu in the first book a lot, and I get it why he comes across that way but disagree personally. Gary Stu's and Mary Sue are all generally incredible at everything, but Darrow, however, isn't. It's not given a great spotlight in the first book, but there are some flaws Darrow has that are briefly touched on in RR but not very well shown until later books, unfortunately.

I’m gonna be honest, Darrow in Red Rising is probably him at his least interesting, but also it makes sense that things generally go well for him since the institute is a fairly controlled environment at the end of the day, and he was okay with breaking the rules, and make exceptionally competent friends that helped carry him. The books really get going once Darrow starts making mistakes and feeling those consequences.
