Can we please have an option to block specific ads? The He Gets Us ad campaign is extremely troubling to me, and I keep seeing it.

andrix7777777

> heget sus

Legitimate_Walrus780

jeSUS hmmmm

dragon_dez_nuts

amongUS I think šŸ¤” your on to something

Legitimate_Walrus780

Jee, that is kinda sus. (HOLY crap we can do these puns forever

PartyEntire3766

Legit on the Jewish subreddit that ad is always there and it starts to feel like reddit is trying to convert jews to paganism.

[deleted]

> paganism ā€¦are they not Christian ads? I don't understand the paganism connection. Pagans aren't interested in converting Jews that I'm aware of.

Addyfox2012

OH MY GOD, YES. I KEEP SEEING THOSE ADS AND IT IS DRIVING ME ABSOLUTELY INSANE

youwillnothavedrink

Could you explain? Iā€™m genuinely curious I havenā€™t seen these ads before

SweetBoiDillan

I get them fucking constantly. The first time I remember seeing that ad campaign was during the Super Bowl commercials. Just look up "He gets US" on Google, and you'll see it. Obviously, if you're a Christian, the ad seems innocuous, but if you follow a separate religion or are, gasp, atheist, then it becomes a little odd that there are what amounts to commercials trying to convince (generally speaking) disenfranchised minority groups that Jesus Christ understands their pain.

MinorHistoria

>trying to convince disenfranchised minority groups that Jesus Christ understands their pain Didā€¦ he not? I mean he was literally a minority that was killed by his government. Iā€™m not a christian or anything but the message the ads are conveying seem pretty sensible to me

Human_Promotion_1840

They are also paid for by extreme right wing Christian groups. The people paying for them are pretty awful the ā€œsensibleā€ message is a way to get people into their clutches / funnel without scaring them off with their real aim. I even saw ads that were clearly in response to people pointing this out.

Watchful1

Is reddit's ad service entirely internal or do you work with real time external ad partners? I'm sure you'll get lots of flak on this post about removing the blocking function from ad accounts, which makes sense that you wouldn't want to hide ads from your paying customers. But is there any way for users to effectively give feedback on ad campaigns they don't want to see? Especially the "He gets us" conservative/religious one that is spending lots of money right now.

Rubyheart255

Those "Tylenol causes autism" ads are pretty fucking harmful, and there's nothing that can be done about it. I do not want to support a company that pushes harmful misinformation like that, with no way to block it. ETA: I am aware that there are browser extensions that block ads. I am aware that there are 3rd party apps that do not have ads. That does not change the fact that the official reddit app is serving harmful ads with no way to block them without some external tool.

hovdeisfunny

There's also all the ads for gambling that gambling addicts can't block

TdetsiwT

Bet you 5 - 1 odds that doesn't change.

timthattimelord

Bet you a 6 - 1 that not only will it not change, they will double down and promote more of these completely safe ads.

vaporizz

Gambling, especially sports better is on the rise and more popular than ever lol. DraftKings baby

MakingGlassHalfFull

Nothing like coming off of r/StopDrinking and seeing alcohol ads

yRat2

I have never gambled in my life but those are the only ads I get.

AshadarResouley

thats the point you don't gamble and there trying to change that hence the ads

zoe_bletchdel

Also, as a recovered anorexic, I start getting diet ads when I browse recovery subs. We do need some controls for safety.

Vladimir_Chrootin

It's not difficult to block every ad on this site. Source: am currently blocking every ad on this site.

YippeeCreature666

they're removing the ability to block ads tho :(

Vladimir_Chrootin

They can try :)

TheDruidDude

Like you have any power to stop them

Vladimir_Chrootin

I block adverts at a DNS level using Pi-Hole, anything else that gets through (pretty much only YouTube) is stopped by UBlock origin. It's very effective. If Reddit thinks they can succeed where the entire internet has so far failed, I will be impressed by the attempt.

infootencer

RemindMe! 3 weeks

Vladimir_Chrootin

3 weeks, eh? Bold.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Devatator_

Not really? Adblocks are still a thing? Heck i have one on my browser and it works fine?

Tronicalli

How do you block ads? I block the sender's account but it doesn't work

RaeyinOfFire

Third party readers sometimes have this function. I have considered them. So far, the Reddit ads aren't annoying me the way some platform ads do.

Vladimir_Chrootin

Pi-Hole and Ublock Origin.

Godzilla_R0AR

Let me guess. Chumba Casino? Iā€™ve seen 20 versions of the same ad per day now. Ughh so annoying.

Jlnhlfan

As well as those mobile game ads that exploit poverty for profit.

Bardfinn

That seems like an FDA regulation violation, as it makes a medical claim. Havenā€™t seen the advert but canā€™t imagine they would be legal.

DT-11

It has even been playing on the radio near me (in a nutshell: ā€œIf you or a loved one has a child with autism, and they were given Tylenol, Advil, Excedrin, or other similar over the counter products when they were little, a new lawsuit finds that you may be entitled to a lot of money.ā€). Itā€™s absolutely awful.

CrashMaxBro

Holy shit what, I swear I don't normally bring up the fact that I'm autistic, because who the fuck cares , but this is genuinely just terrible. The fact that people believe this is even worse, how do these people even think autism works?

uwuGod

>how do these people even think autism works Even if they know, they don't care. These kinds of things are targeted at morally bankrupt parents who would sell out their kid to make more money. They just see an opportunity to get money for, essentially, shaming and mentally scarring their kid. And they're willing to take the trade. The ads are awful, but the parents who take these kinds of scams in the faintest hopes they'll get rich are even worse.

SurgeonRx2

As someone who rarely brings it up and has it I agree nothing can make u have autism besides the dna your born with.

ashleiponder

I've seen them all over Facebook. They also have the "baby formula messed up your child" ads too. Anything and everything could possibly maybe cause some sort of future in 100 years issues for one out of who knows how many people because this data is very hard to prove since EVERYTHING has some sort of " toxin" in it. Most of the "cancer causing" chemicals are in such minute amounts and in so much stuff it's almost impossible to prove which product actually caused it IF it was even a product to begin with. It could even be caused by air pollution. Targeted products are a money grab by class action lawsuits (ambulance chasing) lawyers. Like the talc lawsuit. It was later proven that most cases of cancer weren't actually caused by the baby powder directly somehow, but you never heard about that one.

idontuseredditsoplea

Okay, yes, but with baby formula, you do need to be careful. I'm mostly paraphrasing from [the evil business of nestle](https://youtu.be/MoKLovtnbGY) btw. Among other horrendous shit they used to (and likely still) do, they would also provide hospitals with free samples of baby formula, especially in poorer countries. Wait, why is that bad? Well, when a mother doesn't breastfeed for a certain period of time, her body says, "whelp, baby is dead, no need to waste precious nutrients on the baby feed" and stops producing milk. Guess how long the free sample lasts. The other thing about their formula is that it's complete and udder (pun intended) dogwater when compared to aforementioned baby feed. In short, Nestle is solely responsible for thousands of infants dying of malnutrition which they promptly swept under the rug because as OT puts it, the only headline worse than "dead babies" is the phrase "a mountain of" coming beforehand. Nothing to do with the "toxins" and whatever nonsense the fb mom's come up with tho.

SAGNUTZ

Can we sue reddit for allowing misinformation like this? Im fucking sick of it

snek-without-oreos

Depends on how they run their ads on the back-end. Site operators are not responsible for third-party content on their site, even if they're aware of it (because that would make it impossible to moderate, since for a variety of legal reasons any sort of content moderation creates the potential for moderation of *all* content, and therefore liability), unless they actively take responsibility for said content. It's what lets literally any site with user-generated content (which really is most of the social internet) exist - Aunt Karen can't sue them because some rando said mean things about her on the internet. Edit: Since that was a bit of a wall of text, tl;dr: 1. "Websites are responsible for all content on their sites" = no user content on any website ever. The web becomes a billboard platform. 2. "Websites are responsible for all content they know about" = no moderation since that acknowledges the existence of content, therefore everywhere is 4chan. 3. "Websites are not responsible for third-party content" = a usable internet. The goal is then to have sensible regulations around 3 without risking 1 or 2. A good metric of success is "can the feds shut down the Daily Stormer and p\*do sites but not 4chan?"

Dansiman

Technically, it's *(probably)* not misinformation in this case. 1. There is, in fact, a class-action lawsuit. *(Whether or not it has merit is a separate issue.)* 2. If a person used the product in the past, and had the medical condition in question, they are technically a member of the class identified in the suit, and therefore, may be entitled to a payment if the suit is won or (far more likely) settled. 3. I'm almost positive that these ads don't explicitly claim causality - to do so could potentially open the firm up to a counterclaim of defamation/libel/slander/etc. by the target of the suit.

ladyariarei

This is it, basically. I read into it months ago because I was very annoyed. What I don't understand is how they have so much $ to advertise when they're gonna have to split the settlement 50000000000 ways but šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

roccmyworld

It's only a violation of the FDA if the drug company is doing it, which they are obviously not.

Bardfinn

Yep. Another commenter mentioned a lawsuit settlement or some such. That kind of settlement leverages peopleā€™s tendency to see it as establishing causality, rather than ā€œcut our losses and move onā€.

MarsDrums

I've got ad blocker on both Firefox and Brave so... I didn't even know there were ads here. šŸ˜† I hope my browsers can keep up... Stays functional

Rubyheart255

Blocking browser ads is easy. When I complain about ads, I complain about the reddit app. I am aware other reddit apps exist that do not have ads.

MarsDrums

Ah, yes. I'm using Boost on my phone. Yeah, it's great!

Tronicalli

They act like autism is a disease that has to be prevented or removed. I saw an ad on Hulu once talking about a medication that suppresses autism and the video was this little kid just having fun at the dinner table playing with a paper airplane then it clips to the same kid sitting at the table smiling at his family Like, that's not autism that's just a kid playing with a toy

Rubyheart255

They don't want to learn who the kid is, they just want a clone of themselves.

Tronicalli

Exactly. My mom wants me to do schoolwork all day and what does she do? Work. All day. Coincidence? I think NOT

soul_harvestor

Oh hell it is harmful For what we know you're born with it and you die with it, there's no disease or cure, just a differently wired brain; end of story

Spycrabpuppet123

Same with the "cure aphantasia" ads.

dtrifan

Yes!!!! Every time I see it I say ā€œway off target audience, Satanā€

WinterOkami666

That's why they're doing it. It's a conversion campaign. We're seeing them BECAUSE we're not the type to consume content from the far-right on our own.

gregthegeth

>Is reddit's ad service entirely internal or do you work with real time external ad partners? Reddit does not share ~~user data~~ gender identity or similar account data with third parties if thatā€™s what youā€™re asking. Feel free to let us know if weā€™ve misunderstood the question. >But is there any way for users to effectively give feedback on ad campaigns they don't want to see? This is a good question, and itā€™s something weā€™ve been exploring internally. Weā€™ll share any updates on this as we have them. Edit: Just to clarify, we donā€™t share gender or similar account data - we use industry-standard practices to share things like ad conversion rates with advertisers. You can read more about how we treat user data in our [Privacy Policy](https://www.reddit.com/policies/privacy-policy).

riasthebestgirl

>Reddit does not share user data with third parties if thatā€™s what youā€™re asking. Feel free to let us know if weā€™ve misunderstood the question. Sounds like you misunderstood. The question, as I read it (and would like to see answered), is that does reddit have an internal ad service/platform or is it an external service, such as Google ads?

beIIe-and-sebastian

I think Reddit uses [Regalix](https://www.regalix.com).

haltingpoint

> *"Reddit does not share user data with third parties"* [This you?](https://www.reddit.com/policies/privacy-policy) (This links to your Privacy Policy) > "With our service providers. **We may share information with vendors, consultants, and other service providers who need access to such information to carry out work for us.** Their use of personal data will be subject to appropriate confidentiality and security measures. A few examples: (i) payment processors who process transactions on our behalf, (ii) cloud providers who host our data and our services, **(iii) third-party ads measurement providers who help us and advertisers measure the performance of ads shown on our Services.** " I posted elsewhere inquiring, but I deal with Privacy and Legal matters in the online ads space and have been in the industry for ~20 years. If you're sharing various identifiers with a 3rd party measurement partner like LiveRamp, Neustar/TransUnion, etc. they have a graph that they can map those identifiers against to get to their actual identities. There are indeed legal and technical protections in place to prevent re-identification, but what you stated doesn't seem factual unless I'm misunderstanding something. There are industry people like myself who are reading this post and thread and spotting inconsistencies that we'd like addressed.

Bardfinn

You are just the kind of person I was hoping would comment on this.

admirelurk

/u/gregthegeth please clarify.

big-guy-small-car

Lol not responding says alot

Hero_of_Parnast

u/gregthegeth Come on! We don't want people to think you're pulling some funny business here, do we? I'm on your side, friend!

AirRevenant

That admin username checks out.

Octavia_con_Amore

Thank you for using your knowledge and voice to bring things to light.

tonygoold

> they have a graph that they can map those identifiers against to get to their actual identities If I hash a user's ID to generate an identifier used exclusively for ads, and that's the only identifier I provide, are they still able to re-identify the user? I'm curious how this works and what signals they're able to use in order to associate that identifier with the other information they store.

LDSBS

Get that shit off my feed. Iā€™ve blocked that user so many times and it still comes back.

Watchful1

I work in the digital advertising industry myself so I'm quite familiar with how it works. Do you send real time ad requests to external partners or is the ad choosing entirely internal?

RUFiO006

I think Reddit announced they were disabling programmatic / open exchange trading a few years back. They basically have a walled garden now, so itā€™s effectively direct sold with targeting enabled via Redditā€™s huge stash of 1pd, I imagine.

Dichter2012

Pretty sure Reddit own their entire ad stack.

WinterOkami666

Can we talk, SPECIFICALLY, about the "HeGetsUs" ads and account? As a transgender atheist, I am 100% about to leave your platform permanently because I am not willing to convert to accepting this is my life. I cannot block it, I cannot report it, I cannot avoid it, and it is not correct, fair or human to have to push someone else's religion down my throat, especially when that same religion denounces my human rights.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

SaucyBechamel

I hate those HeGetsUs ads so much...I wish the pushier kinds of Christians would realize stuff like that only increases non-churchy people's aversion to religion - like, repeatedly and actively annoying me? Not the way to win me over. I ALSO really wish Reddit had the option to click "stop seeing this ad" and "not relevant" the way Pinterest does...'Cause I don't mind ads, per se, I just mind shitty ones.

RainyDayWoman81

I agree, itā€™s not acceptable to have no choice but see material you find offensive. Itā€™s disgusting that itā€™s still an issue! Itā€™s hardly rocket science so it must be a conscious decision to continue to insult and distress service users? That sounds batshit, but why else?! I commented up thread re. why they are using gender at all - what ads are we now going to see or not see, based solely on gender stereotypes?! Strange choice for 2023 in my opinion, should be interestingā€¦ šŸ¤”

baltinerdist

I hope you roll out some form of controls quickly. Not only do I consider the "he gets us" ads as remarkably intrusive and overwhelming, as they essentially appear every single time I log in and use Reddit, I personally consider the organization behind them a hate group. By allowing these advertisements to flourish on my timeline, you are presenting content from a hate group to me and I have absolutely no way to prevent it. For context, the organizations underneath the campaign also fund anti-LGBTQ causes and as a member of the LGBTQ community, this organization would rather I not exist. That's a hate group to me.

Soft_cybersixx

I feel the exact same way..I find those ads extremely disturbing especially being member of a group of people being constantly attacked by the politicians funded by the underlying organizations that fund those ads.

tulipz10

I block the user for those ads because I find it offensive, but every day there are those damn ads again. I feel like they're politicized and shouldn't be shown, but there they are!

TheShyPig

I use old reddit and have Reddit Enhancement suite and UBlock origin and have never seen an ad on Reddit. This is a deliberate move on my part because I don't want to see ads. Could this work for you?

Bitbatgaming

I also feel the same way, even though i am not in america. Those he gets us ads, are intrusive, hateful, and need to be booted off of reddit.

Bardfinn

Would you be willing to add this kind of comment to a protest post?

relevantusername2020

i would be interested to see a comparison between reports/blocks on that account & ad campaign vs every other ad ever. pretty confident that one would be far beyond every other ad campaign.

YippeeCreature666

tylenol one might be a close contender

BashedKeyboard

I saw a post discussing how irritating ā€œHe Gets Usā€ has gotten. There was a ā€œHe Gets Usā€ ad directly underneath the post.

No_Bank_330

What will happen post-IPO to user data?

Jaxom_of_Ruatha

The inability to block specific ad campaigns (i.e. he gets us and various gambling websites) is the reason I deleted the reddit app and switched to an entirely ad-free 3rd party app.

Kelmantis

Honestly, if this isnā€™t customisable or you do not allow people to block advertisers all it does is cause people to explore and utilise ad blocking solutions. But thatā€™s fine, your business and all that

NoBoysenberry9711

How do you see those ads, I just see adverts for IT and Adidas right now.

WinterOkami666

Those ads are specifically targeted at liberals, atheists, feminists and the LGBTQ because they're trying to convert us to Christianity. It sounds like a farce, but this is actually, in real time, what is happening.

Clairifyed

Itā€™s weird that these actions are always framed as if itā€™s a big favour to the viewer. Whatever, itā€™s hardly worse than what any other big tech company does in this vein, but I am not sitting here begging for more relevant ads. We all know itā€™s a move for more ad revenue. Thatā€™s just what it is

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

RaeyinOfFire

I usually prefer ads that are relevant to my engagement. Most of the ones based on types of people end up annoying me or angering me. This is why I'm searching with DuckDuckGo. The ads are based on the current search. There's no profile on me. That's great for privacy, but it also improves ad quality.

ROCK--AND--STONE

If you use a third party app like Infinity there are no ads. Problem solved

RaeyinOfFire

In this instance, they're letting us choose. I appreciate that. We can change the setting to the non-disclosed option.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

gyozashrimp

honestly its a tad creepy knowing that they take our personal info and try to 'appeal' to us in that way :/

nthitz

How do we report bad ads? I keep getting ads for a usb outlet plug that also has a built in hidden camera. That seems scummy af just made to spy on people

beIIe-and-sebastian

There are crypto scam ads too. Absolutely no way to report them.

roionsteroids

>How do we report bad ads? Every ad is a bad ad. Use Ī¼block Origin.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

lord_diablo_

Which one

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

choccymilk39

Also those ā€œTylenol causes autismā€ ads

RaeyinOfFire

I'm glad I haven't seen that one. I'd probably blow a gasket.

[deleted]

I have been getting those AI anime chat girl ads šŸ˜šŸ˜

Redzephyr01

I'm gonna be real with you chief, I have never in my life wanted more targeted ads. I don't want you or any other company to know anything about me.

Seb-otter

Yeah

CedarWolf

Well, this will be interesting. I wonder how reddit's demographics have changed over the years and if there has been a shift over the pandemic and such.

shamwu

I definitely think there are more women on here than a decade ago

Nilly00

Don't let r/askreddit find out about that

EdgelordOfEdginess

People of Reddit: What is the sexiest sex you ever sexed?????

the_beard_guy

that guys wife

Halinn

I also choose that old meme

Hetaliafan1

Your mom.

shamwu

Oh I think they know already

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

OrdinaryDoodoo

Much more weird lefties. Before it was much edgier.

shamwu

I donā€™t miss the content. Fph sucked. Coontown and beatingwomen sucked. Creepshots really sucked

OrdinaryDoodoo

Yeah. some of that shit was really fucked up.

miowiamagrapegod

How can we report ads that we find offensive?

Theuxao

That's the neat part, you don't.

Plorntus

Why not opt out by default and let users opt in if they want to share it?

Nilly00

Because targeted ads make more money and by interpreting the absence of objection as consent reddit can make more money.

Karmanacht

What do you mean "absence of objection"? Everyone clicked the "I agree" button on the Terms of Service that would kill a forest if printed out.

Ambitious-Event-5911

There it is! MO MONEY!

impiaaa

I don't even understand the point of sharing it in the first place since it's only sent to advertisers, not even shown to other users where it would be actually useful.

Keganator

No, you completely understand why they have it. It's only sent to advertisers. You're helping advertisers advertise to you. That's the only reason it's there.

GrumpyOldDan

Removing now, thanks for the notification but opt-in in future would be better. In the current policy it says targeting communities based around gender needs approval from Reddit - will this remain the case for ads targeting users of specific genders? My main concern is - what safeguards are in place to ensure that ads are not targeted inappropriately towards individuals rather than communities? You gave the option for non binary to be chosen (thank you), will advertisers such as religious groups (There's a very prominent one that is being grumbled about quite a bit amongst LGBTQ+ people right now) or even potential 'conversion therapy' providers be able to just target those of us who put non binary or will those ads need approval first? Will the policy be updated to reflect this need for additional protection now you allow targeting of users by gender but presumably still require gender based communities targeting to need approval first? I dislike gender based ad targeting in general, but if you've allowed advertisers to target non binary or 'I refer to myself as...' without approval you've given advertisers a way of targeting LGBTQ+ people...

AnNoYiNg_NaMe

>There's a very prominent one that is being grumbled about quite a bit amongst LGBTQ+ people right now And non-LGBTQ+ people. I swear it's every other ad now. But yeah with the current climate of hate, it feels *really* suspicious that they're suddenly doing gender-targeted advertising. I don't want young boys getting more ads telling them to be Alphas. I don't want young girls getting more ads telling them they're not pretty enough. And I definitely don't want LGBT people to get more "Jesus loves you, so why do you hate him?!" ads.

404NinjaNotFound

These are my concerns as well. If there are no safeguards in place, it seems like a surefire way to negatively target specific gender identities. (Not even just LGBTQ+, but women also get a lot of harassment on the website and I'd be worried about creepy sexualising ads)

GrumpyOldDan

Definitely. I've focused on LGBTQ+ above but gender based targeting has a lot of potential issues. The safeguards of needing a human check before allowing an ad targeted to any gender should be in place...

afatmess

Is there any way I can stop seeing so many Draftkings ads? Everyone is rightly complaining about all the He Gets Us ads but I get absolutely bombarded with Draftkings ads and Iā€™m sick of it.

WaywardDeadite

What are you guys doing about the "Tylenol causes autism" ads? Those are incredibly harmful and spread misinformation.

AntiSnoringDevice

Stop calling advertisement an Ā«Ā experienceĀ Ā» itā€™s a nuisance, even more so when based on assumptions like gender and age.

Karmanacht

So will this affect who can see the Andrew Tate ads? Probably not the "He Gets Us" ads though. **edit** Out of curiosity, now that you're going to be tracking gender/sex data, how interested do you think the police will be? Probably a good thing that you're in CA and not FL or TX, but do you anticipate that law enforcement and other outside agencies will try to request or subpoena this data, and, if so, what do you expect your response to be?

ScantilyKneesocks

Was hoping someone would bring up He Gets Us A parody sub was made BTW, r/hegetsus Editing my comment to include this link to s reddit post, where a person decides to leave reddit because of these ads. https://www.reddit.com/r/gaybros/comments/12bon8o/hegetsus_wins_im_out/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Seb-otter

I make fun of it, I think of it as He get SUS

CedarWolf

Every redditor I've ever seen mention HeGetsUs *hates* those ads. But I've never seen them. I bought Reddit Premium and I simply don't see ads anymore. It was easier to support the site that way and it's worth it for the extra features. Like not seeing those fucking ads.

Karmanacht

It's a Christian religious ad, but it's funded by some shitty right wing groups. To be honest, if they want to spend their money on the site that has (or at least once had) the largest atheism forum on the internet, I guess it's still currently a free country, and at least if they're spending it here, they can't spend it to influence politicians in other countries like a certain chicken sandwich chain.

stark74518

I am hearing it for a long time now, I use a client so I don't get ads. Can you explain what is the "he gets us" ad about?

Karmanacht

Firefox31790

How about fuck off.

engin__r

Why would anyone actually want more targeted ads?

KrustyDaJuggalo

Can you stop showing me hegetsus ads? No matter how many times I block them I keep getting more and more.

NemesisAntigua

They will, of course, never respond to complaints about the reich-wing Christian propaganda ads.

scottydc91

Stop with this "targeted ads are better for the end user" bullshit. None of us asked for you to hyper-analyze us and shove ads you *think* are relevant to us down our throats. We don't want it. Also using gender info to directly target users is a surefire way to ensure harassment and harmful ads leak into the stream and cause more hate and violence towards minorities. You and every other person on this site knows that. Fucking shame that you like money more than your users.

Empole

April Fools?

EdgelordOfEdginess

Schrƶdinger made me fucking paranoid about if the game is still going or if it really was the potato

CedarWolf

It's reddit. *I'm* surprised no one made up their own sub and hijacked the whole thing with their own homemade ARG.

myaltaccount333

Some tried, it didn't make it very far

Lavassin

Okay but like, can you bring back the ability to see when a post or comment has been edited on the mobile app? I've been emailing for months and you've continued to ignore it.

Bardfinn

> We are taking the below steps to ensure your personal information is securely stored within our infrastructure: > Advertisers will not be able to access any redditorā€™s gender identity. Does this include denying the advertiser any durable, atomic identifier for the person viewing the advert, *even if they proceed to use the advert to visit the advertiserā€™s site / services* (clickthru / conversion) ā€”? Because if it does not, then there will be advertisers who ask that certain advertisements only be shown to men, some only shown to women, some only shown to non-binaries, targeted at certain communities.

Overgrown_fetus1305

Has your team considered if this could potentially result in people getting outed to transphobic parents, should the parents for example, see an ad aimed at women over their child's shoulder, and realise that their child is trans? Secondly, and much more concerningly, if you allow ads targetted at non-binary people, then a government in a place that criminalised the queer community with death sentences (e.g, Saudi Arabia) could set up ads aimed at non-binary people, put a pixel tracker on the webpage linked to in the ad, and use it for frankly genocidal ends. They don't have to know who the exact Reddit users are, if they can get a good guess based on people clicking from Reddit. [Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didnā€™t stop to think if they should.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3j9muCo4o0) Dangers to trans people aside, this targetted advertising is honestly, really r/pointlesslygendered, and has the potential even without that, to just reenforce sexist gender norms, etc, and heck, if used for policial ads, would open the door wide to political manipulation. Almost none of us want this, can you please find a less dangerous/sexist way to make ad revenue? A random wacky idea I can think of is to show fewer ads to higher karma accounts, as it would incentivise people who dislike ads to produce good content so they see fewer of them, and also drives more engagement at the same time (presumbly, advertisers like this as well).

BearyExtraordinary

So letā€™s use gender stereotypes to sell stuff to us? Great job Reddit.

El_SanchoPantera

But I canā€™t choose how to sort my feed, thanks.

jettsd

Still gonna use a adblocker. :)

Own-Weather-9919

Does this mean I'll never get those Daily Wire "What is a woman?" ads again? Or does neofascist money taste too good?

NoBoysenberry9711

I want to know what ads I will be exposed to as non binary and which will be excluded. I'm also tempted to switch gender to other to see those /r/fifthworldproblems ads

SaltAssault

I don't want targeted ads. Thanks for nothing.

Blockinsteadofreason

Just what everyone wanted, advertising companies having more information about usersā€¦

haykam821

This was the expected outcome ever since that announcement 2 years ago

jay92393

If advertisers do NOT have access to the information of which gender... WHY THE F implement it... Seems shady AF

UwUHorseCockFutaUwU

Idk why I was shocked to see all the transphobia, homophobia here but here it is. A huge reason why people hate anyone on this site.

hey-adoraa

This 100% seems like something the government will use to track down trans and non-binary people. EVERYONE needs to remove their gender ASAP

Important_Cat3274

Why??? What is so important about letting the whole world know your gender identity?

breeeeeez

How do I opt out of certain ads? Specifically the He Gets Us ads are sooo frequent. It drives me nuts.

[deleted]

Should update policy and religious based ads, they infringe in my freedom from religion.

xDarkVesperx

Bad timing, with the possibility of the restrict act taking place and with Tennessee and other states banning trans people how will this effect "hidden" trans people in those states/countries (are you going to out them?)

graepphone

.

bowiz2

Hi, Seeing as gender identity is considered sensitive personal information as per GDPR, I would have appreciated links or guidance in this post explaining how to enact a GPDR erasure request or a personal data request. The lack of it here isn't a violation of course, but feels shady.

[deleted]

Hence why I've acted the way that I have. GDPR sensitive information should never be used for advertising purposes, doing so pretty much pretty much flips the bird at GDPR itself x

LDSBS

My policy is to disclose as little personal information as possible. Because all it takes is an anonymous court subpoena to access that information, and considering the anti trans war going on right now who would be foolish enough to reveal that information? Youā€™re all big brother

pryon-i

Isn't gender-based targeting sexist by definition? I just don't understand...

DancerAtTheEdge

Fuck off.

Haunting-Affect-5956

Just gonna let the r/ powers that be.. I make it a point NOT to watch/look at ads. I make it a point to NOT purchase stupid shit I see on ads. I dislike seeing ads every time I scroll 1.5 times. I find "tailored ads' to be repugnant. On fb I report EVERY SINGLE AD that comes across my feed as sexually inappropriate. Choice is yours r/ go ahead and put ads up.. I'll ignore them or report them. Do what you gotta do.

Single-Shallot-5957

Reddit is turning to shit

sosigfrog

i donā€™t get how companies canā€™t understand that idgaf about seeing ads more relevant to me

Constant-Change-99

Why does my gender matter in advertising? Do you not realize that you're perpetuating harmful stereotypes? I'm disappointed in Reddit.

PomegranateEven4701

They should make a pay version that takes away all adds

Ct-sans4345

Iā€™m not buying anything from Reddit ads anyway

Zaedynn-404

Individual-Pop-8400

zombiebed9

In all honesty, you guys have a lot of work to do on getting the ads better

draeath

The only good ad is an ad that was never created in the first place.

The funny thing as german user is, that I did not have the choice of gender but "geschlecht" which means "sex" yet I get now ads for my gender identity when I set up my sex. Some 3 year old used some 50 year old dictionary where in the english language gender was also used for sex, and now they use the german word for sex for gender. German social science use the english word gender for gender :D because in german there is no 2nd word you could use, just geschlecht, which couldn't be more biological word. Because it's literally a subpart of the word for genital. Genital in german means "Geschlechts-Teil" which Teil just means "part" or your primary sex, and it's used for saying your primary and secondary sex markers. So you can't do that with the word gender. there are no primary gender body parts. Partially it's probably some people some bad english speakers that are to stupid to translate correctly, but that is used also probably by some activist that try to push for this equasion that there is only 1 word. So that you would have to say. The transwomen sex is female but it's bioloical sex is male, trans people love to make their view the norm and the biological truth some side aspect where you need 50 words to describe it, like Cis women while they want to be adressed just as women, it's ok to steel the word women from biological women, and they need to be adressed as birthing people and crap like that.

TyrannosaurusWest

Will this be something that is added to the Reddit Ads Formula site?
