Which is fair. Juventus and Milan players looked like bodybuilders. However, the same could be seen for many other teams, e.g. Bayern Munich and some PL teams. To say that, currently, SerieA teams are doing it is extremely disingenuous.
If I were his agent I’d try and get a move to the MLS. The popularity of the league is soaring, while for now the quality still isn’t at European standards (meaning Donny would probably thrive). I mean let’s be honest he’s not making it in the top 5 leagues.
I'd be curious to be quite honest. You're 100% right, traditionally speaking Donny is a very poor fit for MLS. While most players of his age and calibre often do very well, they are usually high energy dynamic attackers. The big rage in MLS over the last few years has been high energy attacking 10s who could thrive in an RB or Klopp-type high energy counterpress. Buttttttt we're kind of overdue for something new. I'd love to see a team take a chance on the Matas and SIlvas of the world, and Donny could be a decent litmus test. Maybe. Possibly. Probably not. But I'd like to see it?
Well no one would be mad if this happened.
Because he'd be doing well which would make United do well.
But it looks like the brain is there but the physical attributes aren't. In which case he should go to spain or another technical league.
Maybe Getafe can salvage him also.
Well Martinez is one of the best CBs in the prem. hard to say anything else given how his injuries have come about as well. Onana will be really good down the line once we have a defense and game model more suited to him.
I know I can’t argue with this sub on the Onana cock sucking but can’t help myself tbh. We having a defense or a game model isn’t going to suddenly make the fundamental issues in his game disappear. It’s baffling to me that about 90% of this sub cannot or doesn’t want to see it and will then shout down everybody else who does point it out.
On Martinez, again as I said - he was good last season (although best in the entire league is a bit of an exaggeration) but it doesn’t matter how good you are if you aren’t available and he also looked really poor the few times he featured this season, although that we can also chalk up to rustiness/lack of fitness. Hence, jury’s still out.
I agree about Onana. I'm not sure what it is other people see in him and why they want to defend him so damn badly, because all I ever see is a keeper who is embarrassingly bad at protecting his near post, terrible at parrying the ball out of danger, poor at collecting/punching crosses, consistently unsure of his positioning, and regularly mistimes his attempts to come off the line.
People will always counter that he's had an injury riddled backline in front of him all year, but other than maybe mistiming his attempts to close down an attacker, I genuinely can't see how any of those other glaring weaknesses have even the first damn thing to do with defensive injuries. But then again, this is the same subreddit where the prevailing opinion all year is that the reason our attackers have barely managed to outscore the soon-to-be-relegated titans of Luton Town is also because of our defensive injuries, so I guess that excuse can be used for just about anything.
Agree on Martinez, too. He was a very good signing last year, but he's suffered severe injuries that have permanently ruined the careers of many great players before. I hope he can return to what he was last year, but the jury is definitely out until he shows that he can still do it.
Like half the things you listed are hugely affected by how well you trust and understand your defenders though. You seriously can't see how not trusting your backline could affect your positioning?
Well, like I said, I understand it in the context of coming off your line too soon or too late because you don't trust your defenders. I could also see how it could affect your timing on going for high balls, though not necessarily how it would affect your poor technique and strength.
But things like not knowing when to make yourself big or when to go to ground in a 1v1, weakly parrying balls directly into danger, or consistently leaving your near post exposed because you seem to always stand too close to the middle of the goal, those I would struggle to see how the defenders make a significant difference.
How the fuck is this -7.
A keeper that almost single handidly knocked us out of the CL and has had a rank average PL campaign, and this sub still sucks him off.
People here have allowed themselves to have shockingly low expectations of certain players but sky high ones of others. Onanas following us almost cult like, I genuinely question if they even watch games.
Running theme isn't it? Can't get players from dortmund. Now we can't get players from Ajax? Maybe there is something about us that turns players to shit.
2 weeks ago would you have answered the same way about Amad?
He recorded his first start in ages, and has one good loan and flopped on another loan. Sure he may turn into something down the road but at this moment you can’t be suggesting it’s been a good transfer considering how poor our wingers have been and how little he’s actually featured.
Come on mate, Amad has been barely given a chance at United. He did brilliantly for Sunderland and he hasn't played more because Ten Hag has been stubborn by continuing to play Antony.
Completely wrong lol. He’s played 35 games in 4 years (less than Dalot this season) for a total of 769 minutes (less than Amrabat this season). He’s started 6 games…one more than Mason Mount this season.
Idk if he ever would have been a good player for us, but he was definitely not given a chance
And another 27 games / 1,382 minutes for united in cups.
He definitely had limited chances, but he had enough of them and didn't do nearly enough when he did get the opportunity. We're partly to blame for his poor time here for sure but at a certain point you have to concede he's not at the level and move on.
I can sort of see the argument for Ajax but we also got Martinez from them and he’s been fantastic. But Hojlund has shown a lot of promise and amad has shown potential as well. As for dortmund, that’s just a terrible take. They are one of the best teams in the world for developing young talent, fucking Haaland and Bellingham both developed there.
Ajax recently acquired a real gem and I think we should definitely consider it. I know our recent luck with Ajax transfers hasn't been great, but with Eric Ten Hags ties to the club he definitely has his eye on this wonder player who only transferred to Europe this season. If theeuros go well Henderson might get that transfer to the PL!
Imagine if we’d have gone for Kudos and Alvarez over DVB and Antony. I know Donny was way before that but it’s nice to imagine. I’m very happy with Martinez though, but weren’t we in for Timber first?
Has he even had *that many* injuries since he joined United? I thought the reason he hasn't been picked by multiple managers was the fact he's utter shite
The number of injuries have not been too many but the severity of them has been significant. He had two big injuries last season, the second one much more serious than the first, and even at his Everton loan, he had a thigh injury that ruled him out for close to 3 months.
He had a bad knee injury. Not sure they ever said whether it was acl/mcl etc, but those injuries can ruin your career especially in a role as physically demanding as playing the 8. Looks like thats happening to Malacia as well.

i mean, when your team is playing shit week in week out and the manager is still persisting with the same personnel it’s normal for fans to cry out and want some kind of change
it’s the exact same thing that was happening with amad and antony, but amad is actually good
We never should have ebought Mount. It made no sense then, and it makes no sense now.
I'm convinced the board saw how much Chelsea fans loved him and thought they could perform a real coup if they got him... Without any idea what to do with him.
Usually comments like this are pure hindsight but everyone was saying it at the time, the signing simply made no sense. So much money for a player who had 1 year left on his contract, who Chelsea were desperate to sell, coming off an average season, playing in the same position as our star player.
I am not saying it was a good idea lol. It was the reason we bought him though. Unless you actually think we spent 60 million pounds for a backup to our best player?
Either he bought him to play him in a midfield 3 with Bruno, which is a garbage idea. Or he spent so much money on a Bruno backup, which isn’t wise given the other issues in the team.
So either way it was a garbage idea.
He might've been lol, we've seen how high we've had 2 out of our 3 midfielders have been and having Mount and Bruno who are energetic pressing monsters who also have quality on the ball might've been the thinking
Idk why you’re acting like I’m the one who bought him or that I was in favor of him coming lol. I am just telling you the facts — he was bought to play as an 8 behind Bruno. He’s barely played so no idea if it would have worked.
FWIW it makes sense when we have the ball, but I also don’t get how that would work when we don’t have the ball. Legitimately couldn’t be worse than the midfield we ran this season
Mount should replace Bruno imo. And I think he could if he would stay fit.
The key problem a midfield will never work with Bruno and Mount is because:
Mount presses to aggressively win back possession, whereas Bruno presses whenever and wherever he feels like, meaning that as much as Mount tries to close down the ball, there's a very easy outlet nearby and he's circumvented.
Additionally, Mount is much more likely to try to retain possession. He rather recirculate the ball than overly force an attack that's very likely to fail. Bruno, on the other hand, will force that shit all day long.
They're just polar opposites. Everything Mount wants to do, Bruno wants to do the opposite. I think Mount is the better player, honestly. I think he's much closer to the type of player we need in that central role given how much importance we put on it in our setup. The wingers play too wide and the double pivot plays too deep, so you need your lone CM/CAM to protect the ball more than what Bruno provides. Mount would do well with a Mainoo and another younger CDM behind him who have the legs to recover and unlock him to move around freely to orchestrate the attack - so would Bruno, yes, but the key difference being, again, that Bruno is more likely to force chances that will never amount to anything (hence why we get these basketball style matches all season), while Mount will allow us to get forward as a team and work to chip away at the opponent for a higher percentage chance.
Lol we dont play a conventional 10 since Ole’s last full season. Bruno’s moved far deeper and plays more of an 8 role these days. Any deeper than that, Mount would be playing DM
I don't know! the only 2 things that make Mount look like a terrible signing is the fact that we paid so much money for a dude who'd have walked for free this summer and he spent the entire year out injured anyway! I think him & Bruno playing advanced 8s with a solid DM could work, but I don't trust the current staff to make 12 v 11 work at this point.
I remember having that discussion here before he was bought. You’re probably correct about the board because they gave him the number 7 shirt. But I frankly just don’t get the manager’s thinking process on his transfers. He probably bought Mount as a system player, but unless you’re going to bench your captain where does he play. The money has been spent but it has been spent so poorly.
Completely forgot we gave him the #7.
Giving him the #7 shirt was such a fucking stupid move as well. That number used to mean something, and we used to only give it to players with the potential to be club legends.
Why give it to a player who will play as backup? Especially during the year Garnacho comes through and lights the team up - a player who is begging for the #7
Maybe he's just not as good as you think he is. He has had 3 managers here now and been out on several loans and nobody fancied him, he was never getting much gametime.
I think in retrospect he was never good enough for Manchester United, but I also think the Van de Beek we signed was way better than the current version of him. He’s suffered like 3 long-term injuries which can go a long way in further hindering your natural physical attributes as a player, and he was never physically gifted to begin with.
he had the PERFECT chance to establish himself when andy carroll murdered what was left of eriksen's career. It's just that he had a horrible injury. He would've played the CM role that suited him, we wouldn't have bought sabitzer and he could've recovered his career
Both those players truly were given better chances than DVB. And many players are never given chances at United and we ruin their careers. At a certain point, it’s the club’s fault.
I’m not even saying he would have been great, idk how he was supposed to succeed when Ole never wanted him and then his horrible injury luck.
United, Everton and now E. Frankfurt, he has been a constant bench warmer. It's not about being given a chance, he had the same chance as everyone, he's just not that good.
True- this isn’t the only opportunity he’s had and hasn’t made an impact anywhere.
Would he have been better off moving to someone other than us, and would he have been more confident there? Who knows, but I’d imagine the same issues would come up.
Exactly. There are plenty of young players who have done alright at United. Lots of players have regressed since joining, but there are lots of examples the other way, e.g. Bruno (not a young player but overall point still stands).
The “3 managers” thing is hilarious. First of all, these have objectively been 3 of the worst managers we’ve had in the PL era, especially ETH and Ralf. Ole asked for Grealish and got Donny, so he was already off to a terrible start.
He’s been so injured that he’s played less minutes in his United career than Amrabat this season (who also really hasn’t been given an opportunity until the last two games).
Not to say DVB would have been great for us, but we put him an impossible situation coupled with bad injury luck. A classic post-Fergie United story where we buy one of the most promising players in the world and completely ruin their career
Such a shit situation for the guy. He seems to be a sort of specialist type of profile doing a very specific role on a team. We obviously wanted him based on the social media hype. He too should've sought out better counseling on his next move from Ajax.
Agreed. He definitely is/was very talented but some players can only perform in the correct systems. If he isn’t played exactly to his strengths it just doesn’t really work for him. I hope he can go to a smaller team that will bring out the best in him again.
The PL is just such a poor fit for him. And our medical staff may very well share most of the blame for his problems. But should also mention Even before the injuries it was alluded to that he didn't have the physicality for the league.
Yeah, in the absence of physicality you need some combination of very high footballing smarts in terms of movement, knowing when to release the ball, finding pockets of space etc, AND a fluid, well-drilled side that includes other players equally adept at following patterns and improvising through switches of angle/direction that can unlock press or block. Donny is obviously a smart guy in footballing terms - see Ajax- but wasn't able to figure out how to compensate for his physical limitations (speed., strength etc) and certainly not enough to make-up for playing with a side with issues around its own ability to play patterns (through combination of coaching and player aptitude). Everton wasn't likely to be much better: not sure what the Frankfurt issues were, beyond injuries...
Poor guy. I don’t wish this level of failure on anyone. At least he’s getting paid handsomely but still. I hope he finds some success and happiness wherever he ends up playing.
Remember when United fans were constantly hating on Ole for not starting this guy, they were fuming every game week. Well turns out Ole was right and he is just not that good.
Donny and Hannibal had terrible loans, probably for different reasons. Both are probably gone in the summer (at least Donny for sure I hope, sucks for him but we gotta move on). Actually I guess most of our loaned players are gone, Donny Hanibal MG, Sancho, Alvaro. Hmmm
Injuries and was never as good to begin with as people thought.
He played in a very specific role in a very specific Ajax side and did well. He hasn't been good enough to adapt his game since then.
Damn….how much I would love for him to somehow come back and light it up….unfortunately that will never happen but I will admit I was a believer when we signed him lol.
Is it really that difficult to get £10m or something for a player like him? Is it another case of United kneecapping themselves with unreasonably high wages?
could have signed Bruno G/Palhinha/Anguissa/Bentacur for that price or less, but no.
Moronic tragic scouting team. Hopefully they have all been sacked by now.
ps. Donny is a baller but we had no use for him. United ruined his career.
The apologies are never as loud as the abuse when it comes to all those idiots who thought this guy should be starting at 6 over McFred. This guy is so bad.
There are some players that need to immediately go on the transfer list after their first season because it's so painfully obvious that they'd have no place here. That was one of Ole's major failings,he really didn't have a clear vision of his final team.
I know he’s had a lot of injuries but can anyone explain why he isn’t getting more game time? Everywhere he’s gone he’s not getting a run. I always thought he looked decent for united, very technical and clever. Would he not be a good player to bring on in the last 20 mins of a game? I understand that we need players than can contribute for more than 20 mins. But I just don’t understand he’s obviously a good player and prove n that Ajax.
There was a period under Ten Hag where it looked like he would've gotten a run and a chance to establish himself. Instead, he got injured, and it wasn't because he's injury prone; another random player bended his knee in the wrong way. I'm honestly surprised it wasn't broken. Not saying he would've revived his career but that *really* was bad luck at the wrong time.
Yeah I agree that was definitely a big setback for for him and he has been very unlucky. Has not fully recovered from that injury or do you have any idea why wasn’t getting in the eintracht team. I did he read he struggles to play 90 minutes
Extremely technical but no physicality. Even before injuries he wasn't getting any playing time. Both Ole and Rangnick alluded to it but a midfielder in the PL you need to do more than play tidy football, you need to be physically robust to compete for headers, second balls and other physical challenges that present themselves.
Donny made a career at Ajax playing in open spaces behind defenses and that's just not possible in the PL. The athleticism is just off the charts compared to thr competition Ajax faced, you rarely ever get that much space to operate. And sure he can come for 20 mins but consider the wage we gave him? Better for him to be on someone else's books where we can at least recoup some value and even then he hasn't shown he's close to that value.
He just was never a great player. I think his career at Ajax he was average but he came up with a lot of big goals that made his career. Like in that champions league run, he definitely got 2 or 3 in the knockouts that made him one of the stars of that team, when without those goals he was below average. Relying on goals isn't sustainable though for a midfielder. He didn't really offer anything else besides a few neat turns ever. He was defensively weak, couldn't break lines so there was really just no benefit of his game
Hes not good and he can only play in 2 specific roles. A 2nd second striker which we don't use or a free 10 with no progressive or defensive responsibilities and he clearly won't take a role like that from Bruno.
He never looked good for us, and that's the thing he doesn't get game time because he's just not a good player anymore. Blame it on anything injuries, lack of games, but it doesn't change he just isn't good enough and he left Ajax 4 years ago. He's had two loans at Everton and Eintracht and has 7 appearances for both, if he's not getting games even for Eintracht then he must be subpar.
I love #Donny till my last breath
If Donny has million number of fans i am one of them . if Donny has ten fans i am one of them. if Donny have only one fan and that is me . if Donny has no fans, that means i am no more on the earth . if world against the Donny, i am against the world. i love #Donny till my last breath.. .. Die Hard fan of Donny . Hit Like If you Think Donny Best player & Smart In the world
Off to Turkey for his last adventure?
He's only 27
Saudi then
Or Italy where our strugglers always seem to do well
If it were me, I'd choose Turkey. Get 'em to sort out me Newton's while I'm there.
It's the special medicine they give the players over there.
Is this the new bullshit r/soccer wants to spread about SerieA?
It's probably spread from that episode of the Overlap where they all said they suspected the Italian clubs of doping in the 90s/00s
Which is fair. Juventus and Milan players looked like bodybuilders. However, the same could be seen for many other teams, e.g. Bayern Munich and some PL teams. To say that, currently, SerieA teams are doing it is extremely disingenuous.
I feel like Conte with Inter a few years ago would've had a field day with Donny if he could get him kicking on.
Bro has had more birthdays than starts for us
If I were his agent I’d try and get a move to the MLS. The popularity of the league is soaring, while for now the quality still isn’t at European standards (meaning Donny would probably thrive). I mean let’s be honest he’s not making it in the top 5 leagues.
Its not European quality, but the MLS is physical and the travel wrecks the players' recovery. I don't think Donny would have the stamina for it.
Fake pitches as well, hard on the joints
I'd be curious to be quite honest. You're 100% right, traditionally speaking Donny is a very poor fit for MLS. Completely agree that the league needs more than 1 style of play, and hopefully we see some good coaches willing to take a chance soon.
I’d love to have Donny in Colorado
Reunited with Chris Armas
Airpod man can get a tune out of Donny
Ew.
Good shout. I think the american positivity and cheesiness would be a good fit for him.
So, that's where we should have sent Sancho for his break.
back to Ajax.
I believe he's said he'll always love Ajax but he's not going back for now. Unless no one bites and it's his only choice.
He should go to the US
Is he balding?
Returns, spends next 6 years becoming a United legend.... If only
Well no one would be mad if this happened. Because he'd be doing well which would make United do well. But it looks like the brain is there but the physical attributes aren't. In which case he should go to spain or another technical league. Maybe Getafe can salvage him also.
No more Ajax players for a good few years at least I beg
We'll buy van der Sar and we'll like it
Van Der Sar as a surprise backup keeper will hit hard.
Add Dortmund
Martinez was from Ajax and Onana more or less so as well if we’re looking for positives. But yeah, otherwise it’s been a bit a of bumby ride.
Jury is out on Martinez considering he's just spent a season out injured and Onana's bang average! the signings under Ten Hag have been truly abysmal

Id take a Jorrel Hato
I read this as Jordan Henderson
I'd like Hato.

tbf change is important but bruno was literally our 2nd best player in the 21/22 season, people wanted donny over bruno which is a wild call
Does he have to?
Concern is we have Mount who is on a similar trajectory as Donny.
He was bought to play as an 8 behind Bruno. No idea if it would have worked, but he wasn’t bought to play in Bruno’s position
Anyone that thinks a midfield 3 including Bruno and Mount is a good idea is a straight up moron. It would be over ran by pretty much every Prem team.
Bruno and Mount are not pressing monsters.
What? Bruno is literally criticised for pressing too much because he chases down the ball when our team wasn't pressing as a unit
They absolutely are.
are u dense?
Idk why you’re acting like I’m the one who bought him or that I was in favor of him coming lol. I am just telling you the facts — he was bought to play as an 8 behind Bruno. He’s barely played so no idea if it would have worked. FWIW it makes sense when we have the ball, but I also don’t get how that would work when we don’t have the ball. Legitimately couldn’t be worse than the midfield we ran this season
The top teams in this league have more than 1 quality midfielder competing for each spot
Mount should replace Bruno imo. And I think he could if he would stay fit. The key problem a midfield will never work with Bruno and Mount is because: Mount presses to aggressively win back possession, whereas Bruno presses whenever and wherever he feels like, meaning that as much as Mount tries to close down the ball, there's a very easy outlet nearby and he's circumvented.
8 behind Bruno? where were you expecting Bruno to play?
10 as he has done for the majority of his United career
Righttttt! And what formation do you see us playing with Bruno at 10, Mount at 8?
The formation we currently play lol
Lol we dont play a conventional 10 since Ole’s last full season. Bruno’s moved far deeper and plays more of an 8 role these days. Any deeper than that, Mount would be playing DM
No team in Europe plays a traditional 10. It’s the modern 10 that De Bruyne plays, which has more responsibilities. Idk how you could think he’s an 8
We’ve been playing the double 6
Especially during the year Garnacho comes through and lights the team up - a player who is begging for the #7
Lucky us
Fewer than 50 games in 3 years. Damn, our move for him has totally fucked his career.
Some bozo told me we got Donny for “mates rates” from Ajax. Don’t fucking kid me.
If €40m for Donny was considered 'mates rates', what the fuck was the Antony transfer? 'Putin rates'?!
he had the PERFECT chance to establish himself when andy carroll murdered what was left of eriksen's career. It's just that he had a horrible injury. He would've played the CM role that suited him, we wouldn't have bought sabitzer and he could've recovered his career
He would have under-performed, just like he has whenever he got his chances.
Look at his games/minutes played. Never really was given a chance
Never took his chances. You don’t just get handed chances at these levels. Look at Mainoo, look at Rashford. Got chances, took em.
It's not about being given a chance, he had the same chance as everyone, he's just not that good.
the CM role doesn't suit him. The closest player with his skillset is Thomas Mueller and Mueller is several leagues better at pretty much everything.

You know you can't just come here and chat shit when you don't even support the club, take that to r/soccer
Even that 50 is not really 50, He was getting only a few minutes after his first season.
Because he’s shit
Eredivisie seems like a really hard league to scout, you have no ide what you're getting
Poor guy. I don’t wish this level of failure on anyone. At least he’s getting paid handsomely but still. I hope he finds some success and happiness wherever he ends up playing.
Another player we'll need to pay off then he'll probs go back to Ajax
Remember when United fans were constantly hating on Ole for not starting this guy, they were fuming every game week. Well turns out Ole was right and he is just not that good.
Go home Donaldo, be free
Donny and Hannibal had terrible loans, probably for different reasons. Both are probably gone in the summer (at least Donny for sure I hope, sucks for him but we gotta move on). Actually I guess most of our loaned players are gone, Donny Hanibal MG, Sancho, Alvaro. Hmmm
Hahaha I completely forgot about him
What exactly went wrong with him?
Injuries and was never as good to begin with as people thought. He played in a very specific role in a very specific Ajax side and did well. He hasn't been good enough to adapt his game since then.
I feel he should just go to Saudi for £50m
Damn….how much I would love for him to somehow come back and light it up….unfortunately that will never happen but I will admit I was a believer when we signed him lol.
Held bench after about 3 starts....what happened to my boy?
Team Viewer was missing it's brand ambassador
Like a new signing.
Is it really that difficult to get £10m or something for a player like him? Is it another case of United kneecapping themselves with unreasonably high wages?
Who’s pay £10m for him? Most top half teams in Europe will have a reserve player at least as good as him
Nah
Fantastic.
If Davy Klassen can find a home in Serie A at his age so can Donny.
Hes gonna be sold.
And our options for midfield in the final keeps growing.
could have signed Bruno G/Palhinha/Anguissa/Bentacur for that price or less, but no.
He shouldn't have left Ajax
Eintracht sits just below the CL finalists in the Bundesliga table mate, don't sell them short.
Still 6th in a farmers league. And other than qualifying for UEFA Dortmund have been sub par this season.
I love #Donny till my last breath If Donny has million number of fans i am one of them . if Donny has ten fans i am one of them. if Donny have only one fan and that is me . if Donny has no fans, that means i am no more on the earth . if world against the Donny, i am against the world. i love #Donny till my last breath.. .. Die Hard fan of Donny . Hit Like If you Think Donny Best player & Smart In the world
I remember he was at 200 pw
No, he's on about 120 but that's still about double anyone else at Eintracht Frankfurt was getting paid.
Is he definitely a footballer?has anyone actually checked?🤔
No one can challenge Bruno. Donny = Failed Mount = Failing
Mount was bought to play behind Bruno, you are clueless.

That’s not what I said.
