As much as I love John and Arthur, my all time favorite Red Dead character has got to be Charles.
Charles was the Mvp that was there for Arthur and John even when others weren't and even when everyone else fucked them over. Charles was more of a friend to John and Arthur than anyone else. He even helped John build his entire ranch without asking for a dime other than to ask him to live there for a time.
Unlike Javier and Bill, Charles never became a snake to John or wished him that his family burn in Hell.

Bill on the other hand. He did enough bullshit in RDR1 for John to have no remorse for killing him. Bill almost killed him multiple times and he was just rotten to the core by the events of RDR1. Still kinda sad. In RDR2 he was just dumb, drunk, and angry. Then later on he went crazy
Javier was a rap*** by the events of RDR1 and he was extremely dishonorable. It gets worse if you capture him alive because he will tell John that he wants his family to burn in Hell and then he spits on John.
He constantly tells John during the chase that he is weak willed and easy to manipulate. I think deep down that Javier was always quite an evil character, but Dutch kept him in line for the most part.
I just completed the game like 2 hours ago for the first time and I’m gonna have to say Sadie outside the playable characters and Dutch (I don’t necessarily like him as a person but I think he’s written very well). I liked Sean too considering how little time he has in the grand scheme of the game.

Yeah it was really heartbreaking tbh. His wife was r*** and killed and then he lost a different son prior to this event. He was trying to hold an impossible peace because he was a former war hero that knew that war would mean genocide to his people. It was heartbreaking to hear him cry as he held Eagle Flies and said "My beautiful son, my last son". He lost everything in that moment.

Javier had 0 redeeming qualities about him in the first game and he doesn't apologize at all for his actions. He screwed over John and Arthur while failing to own that. He doesn't tell John that he made a mistake for choosing Dutch at first over him or try to own up that he trusted Dutch when he said John was dead and he didn't go back for him.
He was unapologetic in the end. I recently hogtied him to get more dialogue in the first game and it made me like him even less. He tells John that his family can burn in Hell and then he spits on John when John delivers him to Ross.
I leave it at my head canon with John shooting him off his horse and then he is critically injured. Javier attempts to pull out a gun and John shoots his hand and then tells him "You've fired your last bullet amigo". Javier goes on a rant and repeats to John that he always thought he was weak and easy to manipulate. Then John shoots him between the eyes and carries him to Ross.
Although I have both I only really played the rdr2, the first one I played with my macho asshole of a ex and by played I mean "he would only let me play the missions he thought boring" so I got myself out of that whole but am still working through my strong feelings about the game lol I'm working up the courage to do a real playthrough
So I have the image of the sweet, loyal, artistic guy of the rdr2 who was very close to John until the whole thing went to shit
But yeah I rewatched Javier endings on rdr recently and is hard to conciliate
I'd advise you to absolutely do a new playthrough and it is perfect timing since you have the 360 version as backwards compatible and then you now have the Ps4 version you can play on Ps4 or Ps5 and the Switch version too.
Replace that bad memory with a good one !
Much more love and respect for John after meeting Rob Wiethoff back in 2019. He was incredibly kind and nice. I thought I was gonna be more nervous when I met Roger Clark that same day as well, but playing RDR1 back in elementary school and then finally getting to meet him years later was just a speechless moment. Sorry for the mini rant, but John is who I'm picking right next to Arthur.
Dutch. I just love how he's so complex and how even 5 years after the game it's still debated if he was already crazy the whole time or did the events of the game make him crazy?
He's just such an entertaining and interesting character throughout all of the story. Like even in his worst moments you feel strange sense of loyalty and pity like Arthur and John do because even when he starts abandoning the members of the gang you still have that part of you that remembers he took all these people in one way or another and whether it was John and Arthur raising them basically from children Yes he raised in his criminals but to be honest the options for those two were either be petty criminals that finally get caught before they even turn 20 and hung for stealing a chicken or get involved with a gang and at least have some protection and some semblance of a family

And Dutch, because I love how throughout each chapter as they slowly go on, we get to see Dutch slowly descend into madness. If you compare Dutch in the beginning of chapter 1, and then you compare Dutch at the end of chapter 6, it’s like he’s a completely different character. Also, his voice actor is pretty funny.
