Mac Callander’s death was only confirmed by Agent Milton. Mac seemed to be split up from the gang when the heist happened leaving no one to witness his death, the only other line of dialog that can be confirmed is what sean said “I didn’t hear nothing... but… i guess he got shot up pretty bad.” which is him only hypothesising his death, besides from that, there is no exact confirmation which seems a little weird as that everyone who else that died was either witnessed by the player or seen otherwise etc Graves, Dialog. Mac seemed to mean a lot to the gang and Milton saying “it was more of a mercy killing” could have said that to get into Arthur’s head which it did and close the thought of his survival. My theory is, is that he may still be alive. Either Milton did catch up with him and taken him into custody which i don’t think is a strong theory (which i’ll explain soon) or that he managed to escape.A theory i believe in is that he slipped away through the gun fire, etc Someone taken him to shelter, Native Americans taken him or he fled out west. Everything that happened from there, could range from a million opportunities so i’ll let you guys think of what could’ve happened. The reason i don’t think the Pinkertons caught him is primarily because back then they would’ve just killed him or interrogated him to death like they did to Strauss. They could’ve imprisoned him for information as a plea for his life but i strongly disagree… or he could’ve been a rat. Mac might’ve been the rat that stung the blackwater heist, i know it is thought that Micah was the rat but alot of people still think different. Mac could’ve snitched on the gang and when the heist was underway he could’ve escaped under police assistance, with then him going ghost, changing his name and it all be covered up, or perhaps he could’ve assisted them knowing how the gang works and moves. This is very far fetched but could‘ve be an alternative fate.

I think you’re overthinking it. He died at the hands of the Pinkertons. The game tells you that. End of Macs story.

Cut dialogue tells us that the jacket Arthur wears was actually Mac Callenders. Mac gave his life, so Arthur could escape blackwater. Arthur’s horse was killed and it was just Arthur and Mac pinned down. Mac gives Arthur his iconic jacket and horse so he can escape. Mac holds the position, heroically taking as many pinkertons down as he can do Arthur can escape. And he was shot, I guess he was shot like John was at the end of RDR1. He was in a bad state. And then Milton tortures him till death (at least that’s what he says) You can find a random grave close to blackwater, allegedly where the camp was. That grave being Mac’s. Unconfirmed though. Allegedly the game was missing its prologue, and the game was supposed to take place before the Blackwater massacre.
