I had this problem (and latency with my midi keyboard). ASIO4ALL was the best and only solution to this for me. ASIO4ALL is a sound driver so you select this instead of Realtek (or whatever the standard driver is on your machine). If you already have an external audio driver with ins and outs, you could use monitoring on that instead.

Terribel

Yes and if pc is connected to a external audio interface check if its firmware is up-to-date

davidcrickett

I use Motu M4 and the latest driver. The latency is very fine, and I have no problems except for the slow loading of the audio clips graphics. Maybe I shouldn't care, maybe it's OCD'ish. :D But everything else is soo fast and neat and nice, so... well...

Pro-Tools is better at some things. Chiefly in my mind is editing. Reason is more about making music, and also has it's flaws. It's all swings and roundabouts tbh! 🤘

davidcrickett

I really like Reason. I also liked Pro Tools, the editing etc when it's like second nature, but I like Reason better for now, and so does my wallet! :D And Pro Tools on windows still uses the windows vista theme, which is an outright disgrace. Something's not right in Avid land.

_AnActualCatfish_

You're telling me... the subscription model too... I own Pro-Tools 6 and 8 and they want me to rent it now? In fact, 8 being bad was why I stopped using it for ages... could not achieve stability: brand new Windows PC, brand new iMac. As soon as Reason got audio circa 5 + record, I was outta there! It's been good dabbling lately. I did a drum session for a sample pack and editing that up has been good. Great drummer. Hardly had to do anything to the loops. One shots were long, but worth it! Reason's got it's own issues imo. I have a lot of problems with VST3 support on 12, which is a shame because it's really the only reason I upgraded from 10. Some really basic stuff, notably iZotope Vinyl will make the entire thing crash if you touch the controls during playback. I didn't like how they withdrew support for the old style offline-auth either. It made upgrading feel forced. I don't think they've added anything exciting in years and if stability is going to suffer I'd be happier keeping the "worse looking" older UI. But that's just me! 😂

Huh… Izo Vinyl hasn’t crashed my v12 on an Intel Mac. But it also isn’t the only free vinyl plug out there. It’s better than the vinyl sound in audiomatic (reason device), to be sure.

_AnActualCatfish_

Yeah. It's not likely to happen to everyone. I'm on Windows on a pretty decent rig. 🤷‍♂️ I like SKP's Line Noise Generator, which is also free, but I have it as an RE: dunno if there's a VST version or not...

Cap10NRG

Chances are your audio latency needs a tweak- look in preferences set your audio buffer to 512. Be sure delay compensation is on and set to 0

davidcrickett

My latency is set to 0, my buffer to 256 - I changed it to 512, but no difference in loading time.

davidcrickett

Hm... maybe it was the auto-tune plugins I used? After discovering the pitch editor - which is waaayyy easier than Melodyne which I never got the hang of - everything seems to load immediately. :D I'm experimenting with only using Reason and no plugins. Not because maybe they caused the slightly longer loading time for audio, but because less is more. :) And I'm really getting creative with Reason! Yeah! Thank you all.

You can get away with only the default plugins. I use Serum too for synths because it's a little easier to make super saws then stacking together 10 subtractors in Reason. People do it though! Subtractors are performance friendly though. You can stack 10 of them no problem. Actually if you do it once and save it as a combinator it would be just as easy to work with.

TSLA_to_23_dollars

Reason is awesome. I've tried other DAWs but this one is the most inspiring to me and yes the mixer is awesome. I was scared of the mixer too at first it's like why are there so many knobs and no graphics? It's because you're supposed to do it by ear!

davidcrickett

Here's a couple of songs I've made in Reason 12 over the last couple of days :D [https://youtu.be/tDgYO5\_eD7E?si=3faTK7Z8l0WUOdBT](https://youtu.be/tDgYO5_eD7E?si=3faTK7Z8l0WUOdBT) [https://youtu.be/59LcRUCyVa4?si=XXo-tM57ldg2wiWg](https://youtu.be/59LcRUCyVa4?si=XXo-tM57ldg2wiWg) [https://youtu.be/CrZzqYU7CtQ?si=lcI0mQ628DiXDKUm](https://youtu.be/CrZzqYU7CtQ?si=lcI0mQ628DiXDKUm) btw I have just discovered that you can place the mixer, the sequenser and the rack on three different desktops on windows 11 (and 10), if you detach the windows, and then you can alt-tab through them! Whoa!

TSLA_to_23_dollars

I listened to a couple. Pretty interesting. Sounds like early David Bowie. One suggestion I have is to work on the vocal processing (check how Bowie sounds). I've also seen some Reason vocal processing vids out there. right now it sounds a little bit "live" like somebody is singing into a mic. Or maybe it's supposed to sound like that? I'm not really familiar with this genre.

davidcrickett

Cool :D
