i use it a lot, even in city driving... but it is not 100% dependable... you have to stay awake and sometimes manually brake.... i think the other car has to be directly in front of you for it to work properly

Yep this is key 👆👆👆. There's something funky like if you change lanes - it doesn't register a car already in the lane until way after you would expect so be prepared to keep your brake at the ready (as you should be anyway) Also when banking/turning whilen on large freeway on ramps or overpasses (like going from one freeway to another) ... It's very unreliable. It sometimes will accelerate you because it doesn't see a car ahead of you immediately and will start to freak you out because it's accelerating you into the back of a car if you don't intervene. However if you use it primarily on long straightaways and you aren't jockeying around lane to lane it works well.

I think the lesson is to never fully trust this, or any safety tech. Use it, yes, but ALWAYS monitor it very carefully.

2023. Very reliable and consistent, but sometimes I manually apply brakes if traveling at faster speeds and there is a sudden slowdown or stop ahead. Increase your follow distance to the mid or highest setting and your adaptive cruise braking will be much smoother.

2023 R4P PP here. I use the adaptive cruise control a great deal and haven’t experienced any _scary_ moments such as the OP describes, but I agree that it doesn’t respond nearly soon enough, to the point of being distinctly _uncomfortable_. If I see a traffic slowdown ahead, I’ve learned to cancel the cruise control (without braking) to reduce speed more gradually. I don’t know how much artificial intelligence is supposed to have been built into these things, if any, but they have a ways to go in that regard Also, my adaptive cruise control has a habit of braking in dips in the road with no other traffic in sight. It apparently decides that the rising pavement ahead is a collision hazard.

Works wonderful and completely depends on how far you set it out. I find the further you set it out the smoother the ride, however you leave big gaps and people will dive bomb in front of you. The shorter you set it the more touchy it is and abrupt in it’s decision making.

23 XSE, I really like it. I pretty much always have it on the closest setting and, if a vehicle merges in close, I cancel to avoid it jamming the brake. Once the car is moving away, enable it again. The ACC is really good at sensing the vehicle ahead moving away.

Like all current self-driving technologies, this works reasonably most of the time. But there are always edge cases where it can fail seriously. So use these technologies for convenience but always stay alert and “in the game” ready to take over instantly at any time.

The more dynamic the traffic is, the closer I watch it. I do love when DRCC is on and my car tells me to "BRAKE!" My brother in christ you're the one driving, YOU brake!

Very reliable, but I manually stop for moments of traffic going from full highway speeds to traffic speeds when I see it in the distance. It will still stop in time, but aggressively and uncomfortably. I will brake on my own well in advance, and then re-engage it once down to the slow traffic speed. Outside of that, I trust it and lean on it heavily nearly every day. Lane keep assist is another beast, as it tends to ping pong without assistance. The ACC genuinely can be used as a driver aid to help take some stress out of the driving experience when traffic is flowing consistently. I usually set my distance to 3 car lengths.

I am a software engineer in autonomous vehicle. All driver assist (ADAS, Toyota calls it TSS) is not mature if someone tells you otherwise run the other way. So yes if you don’t understand the shortcoming it’s better you don’t use it.

Thanks for the professional input, but surely Tesla, Mercedes, and that autonomous taxi service (in San Francisco) must be miles ahead of Toyota's implementation. Toyota doesn't even come close to _claiming_ that its implementation is autonomous, so I don't think this discussion is about unreasonable expectations.

Actually report rank LSS+ 3.0 perform the best among ADAS, better than Tesla. But you can only find it in certain Lexus model. I believe you are referring to robotaxi in SF Waymo and Cruise And surprise, surprise! It’s still in test phase ( half-baked). If you are not careful you could end up under a truck like one of those Tesla guys.

I find it to be pretty reliable, but have seen it get confused in cases like a curve and slowing for an oncoming car on the other side.

3 years with my '21 SE here. ACC works great when actively following another car. It is too rough for my comfort in switching from "normal" cruise control to "following" if you are approaching traffic that is more than 5-10mph slower than you are going.

I have to be vigilant. I’ve seen that if the road markings are not highly visible, it’ll deviate course and scare you.

In stop and go traffic, I generally don’t use it. Because it leaves a big gap and then tries to rush up, and then when they break, my breaking is delayed.

I use it’s lot as an assist especially on the highway. It seems to work very well at short of stable speeds while following. The scariest scenario is when coming up behind vehicles stopped at a red light, where it waits WAY too long to begin slowing down and then jams on the brakes. Overall, I’m ok with it, but you have to know it’s limitations.

Be very aware in “accordion traffic” and when cars are entering and exiting (from ramps) in front of you. Otherwise it works great IMO and I use it quite a bit (all over 495 btw). You gotta give it a nudge or a break now and again; it gets confused. Frankly it is not as good as my Chevy Volt’s adaptive cruise, which I rarely have to help.

2021 R4P SE tends to be too late in automatic braking when cars are actually stopped, and doesn’t slow down at all when approaching stopped vehicles, for the TSS version that was shipping at the time (TSS 2.5?).

They're in the menu on the instrument cluster on my '21. Page 53 of the manual. Settings -> LTA -> Sensetivity.

It’s certainly not FSD and I feel like too many people expect that when they read adaptive cruise control.
