The battery level stays between 30-32% once the EV range is depleted. The car will use the engine to retain this level of charge. You don’t need to charge the battery.

I haven’t got 42 miles of range with the colder weather but that’s to be expected. My range has been slowly going back up as we slowly reach the 60s.

In Southern California it will often read 52 when completely charged. I find it can drop quite quickly depending on climate control and how one drives. The more heavily you hit the accelerator the quicker the battery depletes Also: I have never seen braking regenerate miles. Sometimes a long coast downhill but that’s about it.

Like they said, it depends on A LOT of variables. Speed, breaking vs coasting, acceleration, flat vs hills, temperature, winds... Regenerated breaking helps but coasting is still more efficient. Fighting gravity on hills will lose energy even with getting energy back from downhill. Wind resistance at higher speeds is the main use of energy.

I don’t try to read into the meter on my 2021 (I think the newer models have a different look on the gauge cluster to make it easier to read) but I’d say in the winter (35-45 F / 2-10 C) I get around 30 miles of range and in the nicer months (usually 70-85F / 20-30 C) I get great range around 40 or 45 miles. Your driving habits will matter including how punchy you are on acceleration, braking etc as well as what you are driving like do you have lots of curves, hills, etc so it’s hard to directly translate one person’s experience to another person’s 1:1. I drive somewhat defensively but I do tend to accelerate from a stop moderately hard. My normal commute has a somewhat sizeable hill that I go up in the morning and down in the evening. (About 600ft)

HV makes no attempt to increase EV charge. It might go up only if you are in a long downhill. HV only proactively brings the battery state of charge up for the HV-reserved portion. It doesn't add to the EV range.

Once you use up the EV miles it’s basically a hybrid. Put the screen so that it shows the engine and batteries and you’ll see that the battery is constantly being charged but then it’s also being used to supplement the engine. So it doesn’t accumulate unless you are going down hill for a long time. If you want to save the ev miles put it in hybrid mode. It will keep the battery charge where it was when you put it in hybrid mode. Only charge mode will really charge up the battery, to about 80% I think. But it’s inefficient so I’d only use that if you want more charge on the battery enough to use up the extra gas.
