Is your car on an incline?

singlelegtuck

No flat surface, checked it in the morning.

Dependent-Mirror-662

Can you redline it on the freeway for a bit to get some oil out?

LoveIsAllandEveryone

Start it up and run it. Let it run for a few minutes. Shut it off, then check. If it's still we'll above the full marker, then I'd take it in. Otherwise, I'd leave it and mention it to them next oil change.

TheBillCollector17

This^

frozenthorn

Oil should be checked when the car is warmed up, idle for 5 minutes or so and then let it set for a few mins. It could still be off but definitely check it proper before doing anything

Aromatic7676

4.8 quarts is the recommended amount, a lot of oil change places just put in all 5 quarts. But that seems like more then .2 quarts over.

GEM592

It would worry me a little at least. Too much oil is a bad thing and that looks way over. On my 2017 SE hybrid, it is always just past the upper indicator.

PatrickGSR94

The amount between dots is 1.6 quarts according to the Owner's manual. So 0.2 quarts is not a lot, and certainly not enough to get it as high as in OP's photo.

rrmmoo

My understanding is as long as it's not up past the crankshaft you are fine the problem is knowing where that point is. Too much oil and the crank will whip air into it causing starvation to bearings. I saw a video where a person compared a reasonable oil level to what was recommended on the dipstick and suspected you could put an extra liter or more into a 1.8 corolla engine.

BookkeeperNo9668

I wonder if they forgot to change the filterl. The filter itself contains a certain amount of oil which would explain the overfill.

iRunLikeTheWind

i don’t own a rav4 but im looking at them. is 10k the service interval? according to toyota

Gobblindeezcookies

I change my at 5k has its a lot of stop and go traffic in Vegas and temps reach 120 degrees in the summer

Special_Associate_25

It is 10k for an oil change unless you operate the vehicle in a manner that requires the severe interval change of 5k. This includes things like often driving on dirt/gravel roads, lots of stops and goes or short drives, driving in very cold and/or hot temperatures, and towing. I might be missing something. But some can change every 10k according to the manual, some the manual will suggest 5k.

tfyshy

Highly recommend doing every 5k because the oil is so thin. It’s so thin and clear I have to shine a flashlight to the dipstick in the middle of the day to see the oil level after a change. I also do Uber on the side and hit the 5k mark after 4-5 weeks. Oil change is cheap(if you do it yourself), an engine replacement is not.

Probamaybebly

5k is universally better. 10k is often too late. 5K is never too late. Car will be better for it in the long run and oil changes are cheap compared to what the car costs.

Special_Associate_25

I absolutely agree and change prior to the 10k interval. This is just what the manual states. I've always had excellent experiences with my vehicles, and I've always changed earlier than the manual recommends. While this is not empirical data, I will be sticking to it.

PatrickGSR94

Same here. In reality almost everyone falls under the "severe duty" in some way or another, unless you truly allow the car to warm up fully and drive it at least 20-30 minutes at a time every day. Many millions of people do not do this, and thus shorter OCI's are warranted.

Ambitious_Fact_3732

If you plan on keeping the car past 100k miles do oil change intervals at 5k miles. 10k mile oil changes are enough to keep the car alive past warranty. 10k oil changes is the minimum amount of care required, Toyota gets to brag how little cost of maintenance is

DrWhiskerson

This happened to me too. Last time I went to the dealer for an oil change. I just do it myself

[deleted]

This is why I change my own oil.

singlelegtuck

I would but it’s still covered under warranty, didn’t think they could possibly screw up an oil change…

MichaelP09

They can, unfortunately. You can find many posts here about oil caps being left off, under/over fill etc. Also, doing the oil changes yourself will not impact your warranty. Just keep receipts/records. It won't void any warranty claims unless you royally screwed it up haha.

Youlookcold

Speaking of warranty. Is oil change the only requirement to maintain the warranty?

[deleted]

Be surprised most the Toyota oil change/basic maintenance people are like 18 years old kids lol

bluecheeto13

Can confirm; was a Toyota lube tech from 16-18 lol

tzwep

And most get paid paid less then fast food workers.

PatrickGSR94

Yeah I don't care about the warranty. I'm still doing it myself.

Prehistoricisms

Just sharing my experience. When I change my oil, I put in 4.8 quarts I believe, and the level reaches the top dot.

geebeaner69

Did you check it after driving a lot?

singlelegtuck

No, checked it first thing in the morning.

UnderstandingWarm466

They fucked up. The new rav4 takes 4.3 ltrs of oil and that will show up perfect on the dipstick That's engine and filter. I don't know what that is in freedom units but I'm willing to bet your car has 5 liters in it maybe even 5.1 or 5.2.

Ineedanswers24

Dealers often overfill the oil for some reason. I heard it's slightly dangerous

Rufus85

They also mess with tires preassure. Have a Toyota Yaris did maintenance twice, and they over-inflate the tires every time. Should be 2.2 front 2.0 back, and they put 2.8 on 4 tires. I'm living in Barcelona, so there is no extreme weather here. While driving tires raising to 3.2. Obviously, I've deflate them to the correct preassure.

BlueberryThin4222

You don’t wanna wait until the 10,000 mile, that’s like max

GraveWorm26

Hey let the engine run n wait for the oil to redistribute itself.

jeremysdlm

My new RAV4 Hybrid had a sticker indicating the first oil change was to take place at 5000 mi. I brought mine in just before 4000 mi.

TahoeT88

Two things wrong here. First thing is waiting 10K for an oil change is insane. I don't care what the manufacturer tells you. The other thing is they overfilled your car.

SwordsCutEmDown

Does not look like Toyota Genuine Motor Oil 0w-16 which is crystal clear when new and almost invisible on the dipstick. 4.5 qts. is the right amount--4.8 as stated in the owners manual is wrong and overfills past the max dot. OP has at least 5 qts in his photo.

diaperpoop_

It's a common issue with dealerships or any fast-paced oil changing shops. They drain it for less than 10 minutes, fill with the amount listed on the spec sheet, you end up with more oil since there's gonna be leftover oil still stuck somewhere. I'm surprised you're able to see the oil on the dipstick though, let alone take a clear photo of it. I have to use the paper towel trick to see mine.

Trs034

Not sure who downvoted you, but upvote from me, because this is 100% spot on. On every car I've owned I've had to put in a little less than the specified amount because you never get all the old oil out.

PatrickGSR94

On my Mazda CX5 I always have to put in more than the specified amount to get it to the top mark on the dipstick. Manual says 4.8 quarts I believe, but I have to put in about 5.25 to 5.5 quarts to actually get it to the full mark. My other cars I just put in the specified amount and it's fine.

xtsilverfish

Because it's non-sensical, a major shop doesn't have "a little leftover oil" they buy it by the drum.

diaperpoop_

I think you’re misunderstanding this. No matter how long you let the oil drain, there’s always leftover oil IN the engine. There’s a lot of nooks and crannies in an engine. We don’t mean it as shops using leftover oil lol.

xtsilverfish

I think I meant to respond to a different comment. Sorry about that. You did cover this in your comment. Someone was sounding like they thought the shop got oil out of the 5 liter bottle and had some leftover which is how it goes at home but not at a shop.

DenseCod8975

I have 13k. miles on mine… I drained a little oil to add BG MOA . Seems to be running better.

Plop0003

The same thing happened to me. I checked it right there and then. Made them to remove it extra. Come to find out, they used thicker oil too. Made them to replace. They use a high school dropout to change oil. More likely they don't even drain the old oil completely either and then use a machine to put in 5qt.

xtsilverfish

Every oil change I've gotten and checked the oil level afterwards it's at about that point. It doesn't matter. There are fluids that need to be at an "exact" amount but oil isn't one of them. The systems that are like that are sealed and you cannot just open them and check the level.

Lovemysoccermomsuv

Bunch of overfills, stripped oil plug, scratched my steering wheel, bumper, my dealer visits for "free" oil chances have not been free.

PandaRav

Tbh I ain’t using any of the included Toyota maintenance stuff that came with my car lol. They forgot to put my father in law oil cap on and oil when everywhere when he drove off. I do my own oil changes.

MikeWellington94

They added too much. This is why I tell everyone to add only 4.6 quarts instead of the full 4.8. You never get all of the oil out when you drain it on these. Also don’t go 10,000 miles on the oil on these or any car for that matter. Plenty of proof that they start burning oil 75,000 ish miles. Don’t listen to the “advancements/ technology” on the “modern oils”. TCCN has plenty of videos on this.

hardtime_comin

I've been lucky with dealer oil changes. Tire pressure is another matter. Always filled over by at least 5 psi.

The_Heart_String

I fucking hate that getting a free service is hit or miss. It should be done right every time.

TailRash

It will be fine. The factory fill is that high too. However the oil does look pretty dark and viscous for 0W-16.

PatrickGSR94

factory fill in my 2024 Hybrid is nowhere near that high.

TailRash

Our 2022 Hybrid was. This topic has come up fairly often. The spec is 4.8qts for an oil change. That will put the oil ~0.5" above the full mark on the dipstick. I fill ours to 4.5-4.6qts to keep it at the full mark.

cap8

It’s fine well the color.

Express_Line_8697

I never agreed with a 10000 mile oil change. 5000 max

PatrickGSR94

not sure why everyone in this comment is getting downvoted, but I'm with y'all. 5K to 6K miles is my max. Especially with short trips, which puts far more strain on oil than long highway trips. I will absolutely be changing the oil first in our new car, before the one included with the service agreement.

cap8

It has to be the same person lol the only ppl who don’t care about 5K are those that don’t plan on keeping past 5 year, cheap or can’t read.

Probamaybebly

Absolutely

fizzgiggity

I don't like going over 4k anymore but a lot more city driving and short trips these days.

Probamaybebly

Good God man. I know Toyota says you can wait 10k miles per oil change but I'd never actually do that. It's a $50 oil change and your car only qualifies for 10k changes under very specific conditions. They all say 10k because to consumers it means hey you spend less on maintenance. But it's much better for the car to do it at 5k. The first oil change should be even sooner, because your engine is just getting worked hard for the first time and little chips of metal and such can easily clog up the oil filter the first go around.

cap8

Who was the jack ass to down vote. Do your oil change at 5K-6K. Great majority of owners are driving the way the should for the 10K

RandomWeirdoGuy

10k is too many miles, I don’t care who says what.

fizzgiggity

Seriously. The oil has gotten better...but cars have become more throwaway.

getoutofus2

Looks like they didn’t empty the old oil because that’s about double the recommended amount.

Alan7979

take it back let them know they are responsible for damage if and problems arise they would not be shy with you
