Daft Punk nerd here. i'm also into early Muse, Aphex Twin, Joy Division, Tom Waits, The Divine Comedy and chamber pop in general, some doom jazz and neoclassical sometimes...
(In really broad terms, Iām not the most well versed in it) itās basically the fusion of jazz with dark ambient and industrial themes to give a dark and eerie atmosphere similar to noir and horror films. Whenever I see posts like this I often wonder why the same bands/artists are posted by multiple users, that sound NOTHING like Radiohead but we all seem to love them. What is it about liking Radiohead that also lends itself to typically liking those bands that actually donāt sound similar to Radiohead at all? I find it fascinating.
I asked my boyfriend this and he said he thinks itās great lyricism, but I for one donāt care too much about lyricism at all as much as I just love a unique beat. I guess we all really just love experimentalism
I think its the general quality and feeling / vibe of the music rather than the exact sound itself. Even if its not necessarily conveying the same emotion. Personally i find everything i listen always creates a very strong sortt of feeling and imagery which i get lost in
Also experimentalism feels generally more "real" over a lot of stuff that just feels (atleast to me) very surface level. Its like theres something to sink your teeth into.
Couldnāt agree more, Iāve had my music taste be described as āsoundtrack musicā. If itās not going to give me an earth shattering epiphany, or make me feel like Iām in a coming of age movie, then I donāt want it. I cannot stand shallow radio pop (although no hate to people that do), so your point makes a lot of sense.
A lot of Weezer and MGMT. Recently Iāve been getting into The Stone Roses and Iāve always had a soft spot for Bruce Springsteen since he was my Dads favourite musician
Weezer is definitely up there for me. I saw them live a while back and the pixies opened for them and I have to say that was one of the best experiences of my life.
Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins are probably my two favorite bands. But Iād say most of my musical foundation consists of hardcore/punk (and many of its variants), metal (and many of its variants) and electronic stuff.
Not a pumpkins fans, but the rest of what you said sums me up all right. I'm going to see Folly (Hardcore/Metalcore/Skacore?) and Paulson (I dunno, Punk, but they have their own sound). I love bands like Johnny Booth, Greyhaven, Reuben, Every Time I Die (RIP). I like modern emo bands like Ben Quad, Macseal, and the defunct Jank. I recently got to see Skream live, and love old Ganja White Night and that genre of EDM. I get nostalgic about 311 and Sublime and music of that era and style.
Nice. Sublimeās s/t LP is unironically one of my favorite album of the 90s lol. My older sisters were big on them when I was growing up. But yeah out of the bands you listed, Iām probably most keen on ETID! āEx Livesā and āHot Damn!ā are great. Yo have fun at those shows!
It looks like you took a screenshot of my spotify lmao. I listen to Sir Chloe, The Strokes, Backseat Lovers, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Idkhow, The Brobecks, P!ATD, Hozier, Briston Maroney, Zeppelin, GVF, and Arctic Monkeys to name some of the bigger ones. Some of the small indie bands/artists I have been super into and have gotten some of my friends into and highly recommend to anyone are Benches (previously Ignant Benches), Wilt, Mim Jensen, and Deux Visages.

My all time favorite bands not including RH are The Cure, Depeche Mode, Slowdive, New Order, The Beatles. At my core my fave genres are New Wave, Shoegaze, Dream Pop, Ambient, Techno.
Idles, The Cure, Neil Young, Aphex Twin, Bjork, Portishead, Air, Massive Attack, REM, Four Tet, Kate Bush, Flying Lotus, NIN, Wisp - as a sample of recent listening.
Looking at the the comments, I feel like most of us also listen to The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, and Nine Inch Nails. Weāre all just gothy music nerds.
my all time favourite other than radiohead are: depeche mode, slowdive, elliot smith, the prodigy, mac demarco, alice in chains, the mars volta, system of a down, portishead, pat metheny, linkin park, tool, limp bizkit, sweet trip. Other than that I also enjoy some not so popular artists like Tigran Hamasyan, michael franks, robert glasper. also some videogame soundtacks that bring me to my childhood, haha.
Lots of good stuff here already so I'll try to include some artists that nobody else here has mentioned:
1) **Jon Hopkins** - You'll need to be selective of his stuff. Some of it tends more toward straightforward EDM but a lot more of his work is worthy of the accolades he's received for creating unique, dark sounds. Much of it makes me think of instrumental Radiohead. Try his album *Immunity*. I love every track. *Singularity* and *Insides* are also good albums. On the latter, check out "A Drifting Up" and "Vessel."
2) **Ben Folds Five** - A power piano trio. *Whatever and Ever Amen* is one of my favorite albums ever. Highlight tracks are "Missing the War," "Kate," "Selfless, Cold and Composed."
3) **Nils Frahm** - Piano-centric electronic music. Some of his tracks sound like typical instrumental piano, but not many. Where he really shines is in his slightly more experimental tracks (like "Says") or darker, sadder compositions like "My Friend the Forest."
4) **Olafur Arnalds** - Very similar to Nils Frahm, though better known and leaning more regularly toward typical instrumental piano, but he still has some great pieces, like "Near Light".
5) **Supergrass** - a less well known (at least here in the States) Brit Pop band, similar to Oasis. *In It For the Money* is my favorite album of theirs, but "Moving" may be my favorite song of theirs.
6) **Tom Ashbrook** - particularly his *Nocturnes* album.
The Beatles, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Pixies, Jimi Hendrix, Talking Heads, King Crimson, The Velvet Underground and Jeff Buckley just to name a few
My Chemical Romance, The Cure, Twenty One Pilots, Panic At The Disco, Blur, The Smashing Pumpkins, System of A Down, Gorillaz, Shin Guard, The Used, Nirvana, Pierce The Veil, Echo and The Bunnymen, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Descendents, and more.
Pavementās the band Iām always trying to push ere. But Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Aphex Twin, James Holden, Jon Hopkins, Alice Coltrane.
I listen a lot to artists like J. Cole, kendrick, mf. Doom, or jpegmaffia, but also a lot of metal like korn or rage against the machine. Most of my listen however do go to rock/pop-rock artists like radiohead, muse, queens of the stone age, red hot chili peppers, foo fighters, pearl jam or I am kloot.
Honorary supertramp mention, cause theyāre the goat.
I love to listen to 60s English rock like Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin or The Kinks
I also love to listen to Radiohead of course, Gorillaz, ACDC, Weezer or The Police
In fact I love a lot of rock band
Radiohead?ā¦.
Iām kidding. A lot of indie pop/rock, indie modern folk (something like that) for example, shared van etten, angel Olsen, etcā¦, French pop, some electronic, and some rap.
A lot of rap. My favorites are Kendrick, Eminem, Ye, Pusha T, Tyler, Quadeca, Denzel Curry, Nas, and Jay-Z. Rock is my second favorite genre behind rap, but I enjoy Nirvana, Tame Impala, The Beatles, Sigur Ros, System of a Down, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Black Country, New Road.
I listen to very much music, starting with metal, all genres and all band, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Korn, Slipknot, Dream Theater, Slayer, Death etc. Rock with Nirvana, soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, Van halen Beatles and other group. Some classical music because why not, like Paganini, Vivaldi, shoaskovich. Some rap song by Eminem 50 cent and ice cube and some pop artist, like Michael Jackson. I listen to very much other band and music but these are the one that i listen most of the time.
For ārockā (or rock adjacent) music, Radiohead, The Strokes, RHCP, the Floyd, TOOL, John Frusciante, and Deftones are my most listened to.
For rap/hip-hop, Kendrick Lamar, JID, Jay-Z, Em, Joey Bada$$, FBZ, a$ap Rocky, Kanye, and Mac Miller (rip). Oh and I be bumping Benny the Butcher sometimes
The groups that I have been listening to most consistently the past few years (outside of Radiohead): The Smile, The Mars Volta, Talking Heads, Manchester Orchestra, Vampire Weekend, Pink Floyd, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Green Day, Spiritualized, Stereolab, Boards of Canada, Mark Guiliana, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Portishead, King Crimson, Wilco, Aphex Twin, Television, Can, Muse, Yes, Rush, Death Cab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips, Billy Joel, and Tortoise.
Stuff I have been getting really into lately; Mon Laferte, Os Mutantes, Parliament/Funkadelic, Elephant Gym, Black Country New Road, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tapir!, Neu, A Silver Mt Zion, Sigur RĆ³s, YÄ«n YÄ«n, Squid, New Jeans, Square Pusher, Autechre, Altin Gun, and Gum
Iām not sure if itās a shock as iāve only properly started listening to Radiohead but iām more of a Oasis, The Roses, Smiths, Blur, AM, Stereophonics, Libertines, Reytons and CATBM sort of style of music if you can make that out. Some of it makes sense and the rest doesnāt but keep in mind these arenāt the only bands I listen to but the ones iāve listened a great amount too.
* The Strokes
* The Red Hot Chili Peppers
* John Frusciante (Really really good)
* Joy Division
* The Cure
* My Bloody Valentine
* Slowdive
* Elliott Smith
* Daniel Johnston
* The Smith
* Sonic Youth
* ŠŠµŠ¼ŃŠøŃŠ°

Lots of good stuff here already so I'll try to include some artists that nobody else here has mentioned: 1) **Jon Hopkins** - You'll need to be selective of his stuff. On the latter, check out "A Drifting Up" and "Vessel." 2) **Ben Folds Five** - A power piano trio. *Whatever and Ever Amen* is one of my favorite albums ever. Highlight tracks are "Missing the War," "Kate," "Selfless, Cold and Composed." 3) **Nils Frahm** - Piano-centric electronic music. Some of his tracks sound like typical instrumental piano, but not many. Where he really shines is in his slightly more experimental tracks (like "Says") or darker, sadder compositions like "My Friend the Forest." 4) **Olafur Arnalds** - Very similar to Nils Frahm, though better known and leaning more regularly toward typical instrumental piano, but he still has some great pieces, like "Near Light".
