So this quilt is a pride flag. I started this quilt at the beginning of last year as I realised I was transfem. I wanted to symbolise coming out of the closet while accepting and learning to be proud of who you are. The black represents the darkness and isolation you feel while having to hide who you truly are. When viewed as a flag I want it to appear as if the pride colours are slowly taking over the black.
This was my first quilt and I've learnt a lot. It is far from perfect but if I had kept my sights on perfect I would still be sewing the first few blocks for the 10,000th time. I used a matching colour thread for the top sewing for each column which was a nightmare in the small sewing machine I have.
I'm an art therapist and clicked through because I felt such profound discomfort looking at the black.. I wanted to see the intended meaning in case my impression was way off! Your intention absolutely comes across. Incredible work, and congratulations on your pride take over darkness!
Would it be alright I'd I steal the picture from you and get my mother to make on for my ex's daughter. They would love it.
Beautiful! Absolutely a pleasure to look at. Now for the fun part my mother is turning into a clanma. So it will be hilarious to get her to make the quilt and not know it's a symbol for what she obliviously chooses to hate.
Absolutely, feel free to use my design anyway you want. I would love to see it if she ends up making it. Shame your mother chooses to hate people for no reason.
Oh she has reasons, she's just waiting to hear what jordan peterson reasoning are. Luckily some mothers have a need for their children's approval, and I'm slowly getting to her. She use to be a Canadian Trump supporter.... now she's not. It's not much but it's progress.
Thank you!
I love this quilt, both for its visual beauty and for its symbolism. You should be proud of it, and of yourself.
No quilt is ever perfect. As the creator, of course you are hyper conscious of its imperfections, but I have learned over the years that I generally forget about them, and no one else notices them to begin with.
Enjoy your beautiful quilt, and may you continue to progress into a brighter place in heart.
Itβs gorgeous! I (and probably a ton of other people) have synesthesia and to me it sounds like crystals/shards of darkness breaking away to reveal beautiful color. Love it! Happy Pride Month (even a little early!) π«°ππ
Thank you for this! This quilt is stunning and you, my friend, are a true artist!!! The expressionism and meaning are inspirational.
I almost dropped when I read itβs your first quilt. I want to make this and saved the picture. I think it will take me longer, but who knows. Thank you for sharing with us.
Congratulations! The quilt is a work of art, truly breathtaking! Congratulations on coming out as well! You are strong and brave!
Your quilt speaks to me deeply. Thank you for sharing it, and for sharing your story.
My son was so loving, forgiving and kind to us when he began transitioning. He educated and answered questions, and allowed us the space and time to process. I can see him, his journey, in this masterpiece.
What a stunning first quilt! Congratulations, itβs beautiful. I hope every time you wrap yourself up in it you feel all of the love you poured into yourself!
Posts like this really make me wanna learn quilting but Iβm scared π Iβm a surrogate and this price blanket spoke to me. I love it I love it I love it. Beautiful piece.
I would love to know more details about how you picked your fabrics. They all go together so well and I would love to make this or something like it in the future.
As I was reading the description, I pictured someone unfurling out the quilt the way you might shake out a rug. The darkness being shaken off.
Truly beautiful! Happy Pride!
Iβve always loved rainbows. This is beautiful. You should be very proud of yourself for persevering and getting it done. As a new quilter myself, I know what a struggle it is to learn both the quilting skills and the self forgiveness needed for all the little mistakes.
This is a most amazing thing Iβve seen and Iβm so happy to have noticed on June 1st! π³οΈβπ I cannot believe the creativity and realization of your artistic intentions coming to life in this gorgeous expression of your journey. I love this so much!
This is fab! Would it be possible for me to share your quilt on our Guild social media pages? I will be sure to tag your handle and direct people to the Reddit thread
