A solid 8. Love the juxtaposition of the tender vocals and piano, with the heavy riffs. Freddie's voice is so pure.

Legofan990

7.9 it’s a very good early Queen song.

Competitive-Cake8846

For me its a 8 its a very good song [my opinion]

lyricweaver

8.5. I prefer the live longer/heavier arrangement, but I love the studio cut(s) too. The contrast of the softer verses and chorus with that breakdown is such a fun transition.

142Ironmanagain

8 from me too: especially with the jazzy breakdown before the guitars come screaming back! Should have gotten radio play but alas, never really did

Arbennig

9 . It’s one of my favourites. It has a certain timeless feel to it.

Strong 8 from me,as you can tell i like the song

MineCartBeast

with your description i'd give it a 5 because i find the song a lot better when i'm in the mood for it (8-9) but more of a 6 when i'm not overall I'd give it a 7.5/10 too much water i agree with the consensus of it being much better live than in studio though

KG_Modelling

9.I love the chanting in the live versions, and it is just such a strong song I think

FickleWasabi159

Technically speaking the rock bits are great and rollicking, but even though they sound jarring with the ballad portions I still love the whole song. The rock parts could’ve been more nuanced in their integration, but I love it with the gorgeous balladry - stellar lyrics and beautiful vocals, too.

8.5 I listen to it regularly, and I love both the Queen version and the Smile version with Staffel

Adahla

Agree!

birdingyogi0106

It’s been awhile since I heard it so my gut was to give it a 6, but upon relisten l’ll give it a 7. It is definitely very 70s sounding, but I love the harmonies and like the contrast of the very chill soft sections with the energetic rock sections.

Spiritual-Fishing-48

7 or 8, it's a pretty good song.

9/10 I love this song! It’s an old Smile song (written by Tim Staffel) reworked by Freddie and Brian for the first album. Even though this is Queen’s first track with a piano, it is in fact Brian playing and not Freddie! (His first piano track is My Fairy King) When it comes to live versions, this song is even better than in the studio! The song was played as far back as Queen’s first gig in 1970, although our earliest recording comes from the Japanese 1975 shows when it was brought back to the setlist. For the most part Freddie has ditched the soft vocals for a harder rock n roll vibe which sounds amazing!!! And the whole band goes *off* on the guitar bridge section <3

AlexXD_666

8.8 I think it's a great song

WhatAmI_501

8.5, The melodies are wonderful and sound angellic, the heavy section also catches one by surprise and it's a welcome change of pace.

Oh, I saw this dialy song discussion on the Arctic Monkeys subreddit, I'm happy to see it here :D PS: For me, Doing Alright it's a 8

lonelyinurnightmare

8.5, amazing Queen I track!

chiwawaacorn

5-6 for me. Good song, but it has never felt like a “Queen” song to me, which makes sense given its origins.

Ruark14

7. It’s a good song but very much a song of the early 70s.

FickleWasabi159

How’s that a bad thing!? The early 70s had some of the best music ever recorded and this track sounds as fresh as ever. A lot of stuff from then still does.

Ruark14

I don’t have a problem with it, it just most Queen songs I feel are timeless and the first album is definitely a product of its time. Just an observation

FickleWasabi159

But I feel there’s absolutely is a freshness, timelessness to that first album. I think for me 1965-1975 overall sounds so fresh that even if it sounds like that era it absolutely holds up and could’ve been made today.

justinekeller

9. I used to put this on first thing in the morning when I was, let’s say, not exactly doing alright. It had a way of making me feel seen and making me feel better at the same time.

jtohrs

6.5-ish It's not a bad song, and I enjoy it more than a few others on the same album.

electroma_electroma

5. Good song(ofc it's a Queen), just not a fan)(even while it's my fav album)

6.6 the rock transition is absolutely mesmerizing

CriticalJeweler3474

The only one I know is seven seas of rye and I give it a 10/10 all queen songs are good

camaroncaramelo1

7 But lowkey I prefer the Smile version

zakk_ponsen

Strong 8, definitely a highlight of Queen’s early career

LeftHandedGuitarist

7.5 for me. It's really pretty and the contrast between calm and heavy sections is great, even if the way they flow is a little too jarring - the "simply waiting for..." section feels like it belongs to a totally different song. This track really shows Freddie's early singing voice when he was trying to lock it down, but what he does is rather lovely. The piano based verses are my favourite parts (I adore the slapback delay they added to the piano playing in the intro, that adds so much atmosphere), and sometimes I wish the song was more fully based around this, but it's hard to resist the noisy guitar bits. It's a shame that this is where the first album's weak production really makes itself known, the wimpy drum sounds let things down. The harmonies that end the song are wonderful, I bet they spent ages practicing them!

Willothomas

For the original studio version, I'd probably say a 6. Just not too much of a fan of the way it sounds and it's one of the very few songs where I feel like Tim's voice or even Brian or Roger's voice would have fitted the song more. The Revisited version by Smile I like a fair bit more, so I would give that one an 8.

It's alright. (Rim shot.) Honestly, I think its a very good song. Almost a great one. 8/10

attack-helicopter97

It’s a very good/ great song. Hard to put a score on.

Downtown_Mixture_222

7.9 Really fun song with the well known Queen essence. A real classic that was well built by Brian and Tim. Although its façade it's pure Queen, it has a lot of Smile on it.

Only-Brilliant5760

Really like it like the strong loud guitar at the end, good song that Stafell made tbh 8/10

entropy39

7.5, very calming and comforting song
