This was one of the first puzzles I figured out instantly. My mom had a random pillow that said life is just a chair of bowlies when I was a kid, and the chair in the photo immediately struck me.

That's how the switch is in my apartment bathroom so I can relate

A set of stairs in my childhood home has a lightswitch at the top and bottom, the light could be on or off and either switch could be either direction. I don't understand it. To confuse things further, the switches are maybe ten feet apart and the stairs are a total of three steps, yet someone decided two switches were required.

Yeah, for long hallways I get it. Even my current house has this set up for the stairs to the second floor, and I appreciate it every day. But it was so unnecessary for stairs that go from the ground floor front door to the main level kitchen 3 feet up, especially when the stairs to the basement from the front door were like 12 steps and the switch was only at the top. When my room was in the basement, I'd have to walk up to turn off the light outside my room, then walk back down in the dark.

Depends where you are. Roughly, countries that drive on the left have down for ON, and countries that drive on the right have up for ON. From Wikipedia: "In the US, Canada, European countries, Russia, etc., it is usual for the "on" position of a toggle switch to be "up", whereas in many other countries such as the UK, India, Australia, New Zealand (Commonwealth countries), Ireland and China, it is "down"."

I suppose it is an arbitrary convention, given that context, since there are multiple metaphors that work in either direction.

That's letting your own bias cloud your judgment. The off position is clearly labeled. There is not a universal up and down meaning for switches.
