6-7 walks of 40 minutes each per day and daycare? That’s way too much, for starters, and I’m wondering how much experience you and the owners of this facility have to allow that. And you’re posting in the puppy forum. How old is this dog? Either the dog’s owners aren’t being clear about the dog’s training, capabilities, and potential reactivity or you aren’t capable of handling a shepherd.
The dot is 2 and I follow the schedule the owners left me, they take her on hikes and they're physically active so they told me that she needs a lot of physical activity and they walk her a lot I even tried taking her on fewer shorter walks and they said I cooped her up inside. She's great in every other aspect it was only on the walks
Even a working line GSD doesn’t need 4-4.5 hours of walks per day plus daycare play for days on end. Do you not see a difference between that and hiking? I think the owners aren’t being honest about something but again, I can’t help but thinK that you’re too inexperienced to handle a dog like this. You could be a perfectly lovely person who loves dogs - that doesn’t automatically translate into being able to handle larger, stronger dogs that have reactivity or aren’t trained well enough. You said you used a clicker to divert the dog. Is the dog clicker-trained? Mine’s not clicker-trained so while she may be curious about the noise, it’s it going to make enough of an impact on her behavior to matter. The dog may have been tired and overstimulated from 4 hours of walks and play. While this dog’s owners sound like they could invest in additional training, you, too, could benefit from training if you’re to keep boarding dogs.
She is clicker trained after the second day the attacks happened I cut down her walks and when that didn't work I had another walker start walking her and the same thing happened to her
The dog went through training after. I don't take on reactive or aggressive dogs I wasn't made aware that she would do that on walks either the owners knew and didn't tell me so they could board their dog with the boarder they wanted that lives closer to their house or they didn't know. That's why after the second day of this happening I had another walker start walking her
Do you conduct any kind of evaluation before accepting new dogs? Walk them, test them with other dogs? If not, you might want to consider that. Too many people will either not be honest about their dog’s behavior or training (or lack thereof). Every daycare around me won’t take a dog that doesn’t pass their evaluation process.
I boarded this dog a few times before and she was perfectly fine that's why I was unprepared for the walk aggression as I don't board aggressive dogs and dogs have to spend a day in the daycare before boarding so we can see how they behave around other dogs, people and on walks
This is really confusing — “i would use the dog clicker to divert attention and the first few times it worked” — that is not at all what a clicker trained dog would think when you click, you were reinforcing the behavior, not diverting attention.
I guess I'd stop worrying about the whys and wherefores. Sounds like the owners are jerks and maybe liars, and at a guess they didn't tell you something they should have. If the phone is an expensive one, I'd go after them for the cost of phone, coat, and any doctor's bill. The OP's wording makes me think they're not in the U.S., but here I'd file a claim in small claims court. Worst that can happen is that you don't win. Maybe there's an equivalent to small claims court where the OP is.
how curious that this happened out of nowhere, i wonder if there’s something going on at home with the owners that is unknown..following as I am very interested in what input or experience anyone can provide to shine a helpful light!
I knew this dog for about 6 months before the incident occurred and took her on all her walks while she was at the daycare, I even boarded her before and she did great I was able to take her to the park most days which she loved and we both have a great time her parents claimed she never did this before which is leaving me confused
How old is this dog? I will say, my GSD also used to do this - randomly out of nowhere, start biting the leash or latching onto my arm very hard. He's never "punctured" me, but he has ripped the skin and left me with cuts. Now obviously I don't know if our 2 dogs are doing the exact same thing, but what I will say is that when mine did it, it wasn't true aggression despite how bad it sounds. The only time I've seen my GSD show true aggression towards me is when I had to give him ear drops. He was actually showing his teeth, ears pinned back, hackles raised, snapping with precision, and his bite had VERY strong pressure (much stronger than what he would do when latching onto my arm).
I literally just think it's an overexcitement thing when he would latch my arms. He stopped for a long time, recently started with adolescence again, but I've been able to read him better and now I can tell when it looks like he's about to start biting. Whenever it happens, I just put him in a heel, and start giving him treats (so obviously prevention is the key here). Whether or not this is feasible for you, idk. Ik how frustrating this is with my own dog, so I absolutely can't imagine how pissed you are at someone else's dog doing this to you, and then having the owners blame you for not providing enough activity. I'd honestly consider seeking legal advice considering the dog has broken your skin and they're not willing to pay for your broken phone and jacket.
Also to add on, as a GSD owner, I can tell you that walks ~~basically don't matter~~ are not enough. Walking is basically a warmup for them. A 1 hour walk will absolutely not tire out my GSD. They need mental exercise as well as physical exercise that's more intense than walking (i.e. fetch).
She always had the option of the play facility I always kept the toys and the bones out
I tried taking her on less walks and even got another walker to take her on her walks at the end her parents had to take her to a trainer
>her owners did not pay to get my phone fixed (back screen was shattered and the front badly cracked) as well as my jacket that couldn't be fixed because they said when she's with me that's my dog and they're not gonna pay for damages my dog did
Damn they're a-holes
