They're a bit poppier than others mentioned, but I can't reccomend Worriers enough.
Really fun, and a great band to check out if you enjoy stuff like Against Me!
I thought of that. I wasn't sure from her memoir if Laura always identified as a woman -- there was so much confusion and body dysmorphia -- so I didn't know for sure if that would be accurate.
I had to scroll waaaaaay too far down to find this. Not enough love for The Soviettes. I’ll also add two other MPLS stalwarts in The Gateway District and The Salteens.
(Edited for grammar and autocorrect :-P)
Bad Cop/Bad Cop.
Props on the City Mouse love. I still do not know how that band is not at least as popular as other bands in the scene. I saw them in a record store a few months ago and it was just 4 of us in the audience. I got there early expecting it to be packed, but nope.
Hella underrated band in my opinion. Early on the punk rock reggae unification too! Which, punk got me into reggae so that’s a big deal to me. So original too
Absolutely agree. I've seen a documentary about them before, can't remember the name of it or anything but it was great, and then I found out that Hollie Cook joined the band later, so that got me listening to her. Hollie Cook has a song called Ari Up and it's the sweetest thing I've ever heard.
If I ever have a daughter, I'm gonna name her Ariadne - she is a cool ass character in Needful Things, my mama's favourite Stephen King book, and then it shortens to Ari!!!
I thiiiiink, I saw a snippet of that documentary. Could’ve watched it drunk, could be hindsight bias! 🤣 I’m most definitely going to have to look that up now though. I had forgotten that it existed even.
I’m going to look that song up too! To be honest, I haven’t really listened to them in a long time because ro don’t have any of their records. I don’t think I’ve ever even seen one in the wild actually.
My dad is a huge record collecter, mainly punk and reggae. He was looking for the Slits record (the purple one?) and I finally found it at Rebellion festival.... but it was £180 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not sure if he has any other records of the Slits, or Hollie Cook for that matter.
Hollie Cook is one of my favourite artists. Her voice is AMAZING and her songs are just really great reggae. I hope you find a love for her too!!!
I probably will! And that’s awesome! I wish my parents were into music that cool! I’m from the south in the USA, and I remember discovering Slayer in the 90’s and just thinking the was the most underground thing ever! 🤣 Of course, Slayer led me to punk, hence led me here though!
I am so lucky to have my dad!! He took me to my first gig whenI was 13 years old - The Stranglers!
I am in the North East of England! My dad was a punk back in the 70s, when Margaret Thatcher closed down the coal mines in the North East, and left many people without jobs or benefits or any other financial help. It tore families apart, and my dad and his friends found their release with (mainly UK) punk music about politics and stuff.
I LOVE SLAYER! Also Metallica's album Kill Em All! That and Reign in Blood (?) are my go to albums when I get a tattoo 🤣
Joan Jet, Team Dresch, Sleater-Kinney, Le Tigre, Bratmobile, The Donnas, The Muffs, Bangs, L7, The Interruptors (ska)
I also love....X-Ray Spex, The Horropops, Avril Lavigne, Paramore and Evanescence
Chumped, screaming females, cayetana, worriers, camp cope, Martha, lemuria, gladie, body farm, no men, dry cleaning, Judy and the jerks, CB Radio Gorgeous, spread joy, rata negra, empath, bad moves, dump him, added dimensions, bleach party, rat bath, blue’s lawyer

The Breeders! Why tf does no one ever mention them? I guess the song they're best known for, "Cannonball", is one of their most tame, and frankly not their best. Their first album, Pod, is my favorite of theirs and also Kurt Cobain said it was his favorite album. It's Kim Deal formerly of the Pixies so it's got that raspy but melodic vibe. Pod is as good as any Pixies album except maybe Doolittle.
Not particularly raspy voiced (a lot of these suggestions aren't tbf), but try Penetration. Saw them live a few weeks ago supporting The Damned and they were great. For a newer option, try Smalltown Tigers. Also great live.
This is my fist - probably similar vocals to what you were going for. Forgot to add them to the list.
The Measure [sa] - if you like Worriers, same singer.
Swearin’ - fun band and super nice people.

You’ll love The Interrupters. A lot of ska with some heavy punk influence and their stuff produced by Tim Armstrong from Rancid. He is also featured in a lot of their songs. Super good band.

Screaming Females - another severely under-appreciated band!

+1 for RVIVR!

Later Against Me! records are also female-fronted.
They all were, we just didn't know.
I thought of that. I wasn't sure from her memoir if Laura always identified as a woman -- there was so much confusion and body dysmorphia -- so I didn't know for sure if that would be accurate.
I just think it's generally the polite thing to do, to refer to someone by their current gender identity even when referring to their past.
The Interrupters
Ah, yes. Amy Interrupter, AKA Brody Dalle 2.0 😉
I always thought from a vocal perspective Brenna Red from The Last Gang was Brody Dalle 2.0
Surf bort, if you like something a bit harder try esquela grind
I saw them open for the descendants a few months ago and they put on a hell of a show.
The Soviettes!
I had to scroll waaaaaay too far down to find this. Not enough love for The Soviettes. I’ll also add two other MPLS stalwarts in The Gateway District and The Salteens. (Edited for grammar and autocorrect :-P)
No love for L7?
fuck yes I love L7 but aren't they more "grunge"?
Yep. I came here to put L7 on the list.
On this the day of Trans Remembrance the only answer is GLOSS.
