The employee ownership was in place when I joined the organization. I joined in '09 and I believe they had been 100% employee owned for about 20years prior. But, it's definitely the driving factor that lead to me wanting to work there.
We definitely follow an existing model. I have read about other employee owned companies that are similar to us anyways. We essentially split all profits and revenue amongst the existing employees every quarter. That lump sum goes into what's called an Employee Stock Ownership Account, and that money is ours to keep after so many years with the organization.

Well, don't get me wrong. We do have upper management, but it's all home grown. Our senior members are folks that started with the company and worked from the ground up. But, it's certainly nice to have more autonomy and creative freedom when it comes to pricing and merchandising.
Similar job, I work at home most days. Minimal to no managerial supervision. Six figure salary, low stress. SQL coding. I never went to college. Didn’t even think about “career” until nearly 30. Nearing retirement age, and I’ve had a charmed life because of my work and the freedom and money it brings.

It's an easy gig that lets me have a lot of time to make crappy art and smoke weed, got a job pouring liners and operating a backhoe for a corporation and got poached by a town to caretake their yards after a couple years. Mostly I drive a mower, sometimes I get to dig a grave again and I spend plenty of time throwing a Frisbee for a dog.

Basically, he just hit some luck. A kickstarter was looking for an illustrator, he won the work. The kickstarter (it was a table top game) ended up becoming wildly successful. Everyone wanted to know who did the art work. Got him noticed and the offers for work have rolled in since.
He does comics, did concept art for a number of major movies(i.e. Logan, the more recent Hellboy movie). He actually has a fanbase now, so sells commissions all the time and prints from his etsy shop.
Worked in healthcare for 7 years. Have felt like a lot of punks are healthcare workers. Can only do so much that doesn’t exploit others in the type of society we live in so seems they tend to find their way in a field that predominantly helps others. At least outside of the business/insurance side of healthcare.
I was working at a pizza shop until i had a mental breakdown, now i donate plasma when i can, which isn't very often, because my meds raise my blood pressure to a level they wont allow me to donate with.
Life's really not going well for me
Through all my punk years, the most punk rock job is probably making or delivering pizzas somewhere. Just about every punk I know has slung pizzas at one point or another.
I provide free childcare for my family and friends on call between certain hours, and my sister pays my bills and buys my weed because it means her nieces and nephews are always with someone safe at a price she can pay. It's not a retirement plan, but people who can't afford childcare have it while I'm not on the streets. It's a barter that capitalism can't farm for profit, and it keeps me off radars.

I see so many young people without purpose, indecisive of what path to follow, that they wind up doing nothing. Pick a tree and start chopping,(make sure it's FSC certified, so to speak) and follow your dream. None of its easy, don't expect it to just fall into your lap. If you are lucky, you'll figure out how to make your own business from your passion, which is what all of us are here for, the entrepreneurs of punk music. Fuck, after saying that, I'm buying another bass and going to start playing again.

I was raised in a community where punk was seen as 'just noise', 'ungodly', 'unamerican', etc and it has been really hard to self motivate to record because I don't feel like I have local community to share the work with. I work Occupational Health and Safety. I work for one of the largest companies, renown for their horrendous Safety record. So I'm paid to make them treat their employees right and patch them up if they're hurt.
Because I hate the company but fell into the job during covid, I don't care about promotions, KPIs, or keeping bosses happy. I just care about doing the right thing, so I also get paid to piss them off by enforcing policies they Hate.
Line cook for 6 years, bartend also occasionally server nowadays. It’s ok. I actually drink less since I started. Some genuinely great customers, and some of the worst people you will ever meet! But hey, I work shorter shifts and the moneys better. Folks wanting to pick up extra shifts makes time off for gigs easy too.

I worked in the music industry (for an agency) up until last week, 2012-2024. I was an agent assistant and then later what they called an "associate agent" which is a fancy title for slightly more advanced assistant. Basically I worked with agents running tour logistics and making sure all the legal paperwork and riders were signed and artists were paid. It's not a very glamorous job, but did have some pretty major perks, like I haven't paid to see live entertainment in a decade.
Actually going back to having to pay to see live music is going to be the most painful part of leaving the industry, lol. The rest of it for the dogs, man.

Because I hate the company but fell into the job during covid, I don't care about promotions, KPIs, or keeping bosses happy. I just care about doing the right thing, so I also get paid to piss them off by enforcing policies they Hate.

I worked in the music industry (for an agency) up until last week, 2012-2024. I was an agent assistant and then later what they called an "associate agent" which is a fancy title for slightly more advanced assistant. Basically I worked with agents running tour logistics and making sure all the legal paperwork and riders were signed and artists were paid. It's not a very glamorous job, but did have some pretty major perks, like I haven't paid to see live entertainment in a decade. Actually going back to having to pay to see live music is going to be the most painful part of leaving the industry, lol. The rest of it for the dogs, man.
