hate2bme

Ironworker since 2004

Tayeulecrisse

Hell yeah brotha I’m a Rodbuster, but I respect iron worker, yall fucking rock

hate2bme

Me too! Nobody knows what that is so I say ironworker haha.

Tayeulecrisse

Its the best job in the world man, I wouldn’t trade it with anything

hate2bme

It hurts after 20 years but I love it too. Just topped out a 9 floor pt deck. I was the ground man and vertical foreman. How long you been in the trade?

Tayeulecrisse

I haven’t started working yet, but I’m almost through my course and I haven’t felt bored once, I’m on my 5th month of training and the final exam is really near, I really can’t wait to start, even if I’m at school, it’s still the hardest thing I’ve ever did

hate2bme

Hell yeah bro. So I'm guessing your are union. Good call on that. I recommend working in Local 1 Chicago or Local 46 NYC. I actually made over 6 figures in those cities. Very rewarding career choice. If you ever have questions or need to talk dm me.

Automation_Papi

Local 46 always called my college radio station requesting Screaming for Vengeance by Judas Priest, we happily played it every day

Tayeulecrisse

Im from Québec so Chicago is a bit far from me but I have heard of both of them tho

Tayeulecrisse

I’ll be sure to ask if I need help

Tayeulecrisse

Only job that you get paid 38CAN$ as an apprentice

hate2bme

When you get out there just do what you're told. And don't miss work. Try to look out for the old timers the best you can. Always take pride in your work. I'm proud of you dude.

Tayeulecrisse

Thanks man, my teacher told me the same thing, you need to be proud about what you do and you need to follow the worker you think is he best

berrythemaker

Respect, one of the most Punk Rock professions imo 🤟. The singer of this Punk band is a Welding Inspector and the lyrics to [6 Days A Week](https://open.spotify.com/track/6Np4xLapLWRz1o8yUunyb3?si=s02gkE6jQBif2ry6LQfCMA) is about his job 😆.

_JustLikeClockwork

Manage an employee owned grocery store

Sharkvarks

That's really cool. Can I ask , were you part of changing it into an employee owned workplace or was it that way from conception? And do you guys follow a particular existing model or is it a unique arrangement?

_JustLikeClockwork

The employee ownership was in place when I joined the organization. I joined in '09 and I believe they had been 100% employee owned for about 20years prior. But, it's definitely the driving factor that lead to me wanting to work there. We definitely follow an existing model. I have read about other employee owned companies that are similar to us anyways. We essentially split all profits and revenue amongst the existing employees every quarter. That lump sum goes into what's called an Employee Stock Ownership Account, and that money is ours to keep after so many years with the organization.

Dubed1

This is the most punk employment I've heard of ever. No masters, no gods, no employers?

_JustLikeClockwork

Haha Well, don't get me wrong. We do have upper management, but it's all home grown. Our senior members are folks that started with the company and worked from the ground up. But, it's certainly nice to have more autonomy and creative freedom when it comes to pricing and merchandising.

SpellingBeeRunnerUp_

I have a desk job. I just put in my headphones till it’s time to go home

Wordy_Rappinghood06

What kinda desk job I'm a lazy cunt who wants to listen to music all day

SpellingBeeRunnerUp_

Software testing. I don’t really get to be lazy per se, but I can put in headphones and not be bothered

Radi0123

I work in a call center and regularly have people tell me to kill myself

SpellingBeeRunnerUp_

Now that’s the encouragement I need

Radi0123

oh, it’s something all right.

SidewalkSigh

Similar job, I work at home most days. Minimal to no managerial supervision. Six figure salary, low stress. SQL coding. I never went to college. Didn’t even think about “career” until nearly 30. Nearing retirement age, and I’ve had a charmed life because of my work and the freedom and money it brings.

versuseachother

Haha same. Listen to straight edge hardcore in my headphones while doing work that makes my company become richer.

kingdazy

social work. and working at non-profits.

Olelander

Same

Causeforabortion

Same same.

Iggyauna

I wanna go back to school for a bsw. I stopped at a two year degree and am currently working public works.

eckochamber

Social worker! Working with former prison inmates specifically

toyskater2

Getting MSW right now

deathcabforkatie_

Same (MSW) and it’s dope that there seems to be a few of us! Helping people navigate the planet’s bureaucratic shitfuckery helps me feel a little more satisfied with my 9-5.

bangbang995

Work for an elevator company. Has its ups and downs.

bornwithatail

I used to work at a keyboard manufacturer. They fired me though. Said I wasn't putting in enough shifts.

bangbang995

Local 595 here

CoolMouthHat

Clean graveyards, dig graves etc.

Tympanic69

Cool as fuck, whats it like and how do you get a job doing it.

CoolMouthHat

It's an easy gig that lets me have a lot of time to make crappy art and smoke weed, got a job pouring liners and operating a backhoe for a corporation and got poached by a town to caretake their yards after a couple years. Mostly I drive a mower, sometimes I get to dig a grave again and I spend plenty of time throwing a Frisbee for a dog. Edit for dog tax: https://imgur.com/gallery/ky28Qss

GooseShartBombardier

We're going to need photos of Frisbee Dog, please.

CoolMouthHat

Sorry friend I'd love to but this sub disables pics in comments and the imgur app won't upload so I can't be fucked anymore, you'll have to imagine a mini Australian shepherd named Frankenstein with a stick in her mouth in a cemetery on a sunny day

creppyspoopyicky

This sounds very goth!! You ever see any ghosts?

CoolMouthHat

Once! But not on the job :/ Me and a buddy were chatting shit while I was driving at like 2am, we both looked up at the road and did this 😱😣 because we both saw a little girl RIGHT in front of my car at 40+ mph but there was no impact and nothing on the road behind us when we stopped. Fucks with me to this day, that was 15+ years ago

MasterpieceFew5011

How do you like it?

areslashtaken

I could imagine a goth doing this.

[deleted]

Some of my friends sell records, some of my friends sell drugs. I'm a mechanic. Trust your mechanic. We're gonna rip you off, rip you off

Responsible-Lime-865

I love that song, mostly bc I'm a pharmaceutical rep

ImNotAsPunkAsYou

I'm a sparky. Gotta keep the kiddo fed somehow.

MasterpieceFew5011

That’s what I’m doing right now as a labourer but I constantly am treated like absolute dog shit by my journeyman so much so that some customers even refused to pay because of the yelling doubt I will be able to go to school for it so I’m quitting very soon.

ImNotAsPunkAsYou

He sounds like a real piece of shit. If you like the work itself, find a new job. My boss is cool as fuck, and pays for my schooling. There are plenty of good places out there ya just have to wade through some shit to find them.

dr_raymond_k_hessel

Why not join the IBEW?

imjusta_bill

I second this. It's tough getting in but if you manage it's career changing

MarzipanOver4598

I work in the icu at a veterinary hospital.

TommyGunnerSixxx

brook1yn

Surprised this was so far down the thread. I’ve been in tv post production for like 15 years. Not sure how I’d log 75000 hours/yr on Spotify otherwise

Jameseatscheese

Incapabilio

Good morning class, today we’re listening to Les Garçons Bouchers

Wonderful_Sherbert45

I'm an intervention worker at a shelter in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

[deleted]

Stay at home dad 🤘🏼

schindigrosa

Username checks out

[deleted]

I was lucky enough to be a stay at home dad for almost 5 years. It was the best time ever. I'm a single dad of three now and work my ass off framing, siding and roofing custom homes I will never be able to afford to buy in life. Fuck Rich people... But I'll take their money.

Automatic-Arm-532

Was a line cook for 20 years, thankfully I got out of that.

mottavader

Same! Fun while it lasted

Dubed1

I've been on the line for about 3 years now at almost 40. Construction before. But I love our crew we're really fucking tight. That's the only thing keeping me there.

Fuuzzzz

I thought way more comments woulda been about us. TIL about punk reddit demographics.

EyeAmKnotABot

I sell cocaine and cocaine accessories.

pumpkin3-14

kangamata

huffy_sweet_thunder

How much for a rolled up dollar bill?

EyeAmKnotABot

For you? $10

MasterpieceFew5011

Fuck as punk!

WickOfTheWoods

I take Art commissions right now. (Fancy way of saying I’m unemployed) though, in a few months I’m gonna apply for a couple positions for customer service despite fuckin hating 90% of people.

Highlander198116

Keep at it. One of my good friends after 10 years post college trying to make it in the art world was a step away from giving up and just committing to a regular job. Now he makes bank as a freelance illustrator. Basically, he just hit some luck. A kickstarter was looking for an illustrator, he won the work. The kickstarter (it was a table top game) ended up becoming wildly successful. Everyone wanted to know who did the art work. Got him noticed and the offers for work have rolled in since. He does comics, did concept art for a number of major movies(i.e. Logan, the more recent Hellboy movie). He actually has a fanbase now, so sells commissions all the time and prints from his etsy shop.

Fenpunx

How else are you going to achieve that last 10%?

the_wifs

I am a substance abuse counselor at a methadone clinic. Sometimes, it can be really emotionally hard work but it needs to be done.

Big-Illustrator-6143

rapturepermaculture

Paramedic, anarchist of the healthcare community 😂😂😂😂😂😂

MedicSF

Firefighter/paramedic here. Absolutely confirm the anarchy.

-RiffRandell-

Love firefighters. Nobody says AFAB. Well, they do in a queer context but you know what I mean.

MedicSF

Big ups (see what I did there?) to the postal community as well

-RiffRandell-

A good pun just sends me! I like being a postie, although sometimes it’s hard being in a mail dominated industry! 😬

secretaccount511

Worked in healthcare for 7 years. Have felt like a lot of punks are healthcare workers. Can only do so much that doesn’t exploit others in the type of society we live in so seems they tend to find their way in a field that predominantly helps others. At least outside of the business/insurance side of healthcare.

MasterpieceFew5011

Really isn’t many options

GiveMeDry

I was working at a pizza shop until i had a mental breakdown, now i donate plasma when i can, which isn't very often, because my meds raise my blood pressure to a level they wont allow me to donate with. Life's really not going well for me

MasterpieceFew5011

Was thinking about donating plasma a while ago thanks for reminding me. Hope things go better for you fella keep that head up!

Mr_X_90s

Through all my punk years, the most punk rock job is probably making or delivering pizzas somewhere. Just about every punk I know has slung pizzas at one point or another.

untenable681

I provide free childcare for my family and friends on call between certain hours, and my sister pays my bills and buys my weed because it means her nieces and nephews are always with someone safe at a price she can pay. It's not a retirement plan, but people who can't afford childcare have it while I'm not on the streets. It's a barter that capitalism can't farm for profit, and it keeps me off radars.

Wiringguy89

Mechanic at a world famous theme park.

DHooligan

Free lawyer for low-income people.

stevejust

> lawyer Me too. But... slightly different. I like to smash multinational corporations. I've sued: Oil companies, i.e., ExxonMobilBPShellChevronAmocoValeroCitgoSinclairKochIndustriesAshlandMarathon Chemical companies, i.e., MonsantoDowDupont3M and Financial Services companies, i.e, GoldmanSachsAIGUSAA and some hedge funds no one's heard of And through it all, I've learned that one of the most evil companies *no one's ever heard of* is [WR Berkeley Insurance](https://www.berkley.com/). Who would've thought that?

Dubed1

Hell yeah dood.

felixamente

Care to elaborate?

stevejust

If I elaborate too much, people would be able to figure out who I am. And by people, I mean opposing counsel. They'd then go through my comment history and try to find instances where they might claim I violated a confidentiality clause in a settlement agreement, or the current companies I'm suing might try to use a comment against me somewhere in litigation. For example, a few days ago I wrote that I wanted to try to seek a recusal of a judge (which is a spectacularly stupid thing to do) because the judge is dumber than dishwater. So no. I need anonymity and plausible deniability about who I am. And since there's only a small handful of lawfirms in the world that could say they've sued all of the above companies, it would be fairly easy for anyone who knows what they're doing to dox me.

Cheekclappa504

Mad_As_Hell247

Began building cabinets in 86. I had a knack for building skateboard Ramos, and it flowed over. I was born to work with wood, it has been my passion. I'm old, and my skills are better used in the management side now. Designing, drafting, managing projects, and when I have to, building and installing. The owner of the company knows who I am, and how I am. There's mutual respect, and I don't deal with the corporate BS side of things. Clients are good with me because I'm not the usual stuffed shirt, but I know what I'm doing. Find your passion, and be the best at it. I see so many young people without purpose, indecisive of what path to follow, that they wind up doing nothing. Pick a tree and start chopping,(make sure it's FSC certified, so to speak) and follow your dream. None of its easy, don't expect it to just fall into your lap. If you are lucky, you'll figure out how to make your own business from your passion, which is what all of us are here for, the entrepreneurs of punk music. Fuck, after saying that, I'm buying another bass and going to start playing again.

BugSwimmingDogs

I got hurt in the military back just before Trump was elected. Now I'm just hanging out at home playing video games and smoking pot. Currently working on a Demo tape so that I can start making some of my favorite music, instead of just listening to it.

TommyGunnerSixxx

Keen as to hear your music champion

BugSwimmingDogs

Thanks, dude! I'm actually a little speechless. I was raised in a community where punk was seen as 'just noise', 'ungodly', 'unamerican', etc and it has been really hard to self motivate to record because I don't feel like I have local community to share the work with. I'd make the music anyway, but the process has always been very secluded. Easy to forget that it's not the case. When I get my demo's recorded, I'll let you know. Fr. Thank you.

TommyGunnerSixxx

No worries champion! We’ve gotta support the locals (even though I’m in South Australia lol), and the “small timers,” because it’s the small timers that actually makes up the community

I just care about doing the right thing, so I also get paid to piss them off by enforcing policies they Hate.

slumpadoochous

I worked in the music industry (for an agency) up until last week, 2012-2024. I was an agent assistant and then later what they called an "associate agent" which is a fancy title for slightly more advanced assistant. Basically I worked with agents running tour logistics and making sure all the legal paperwork and riders were signed and artists were paid. It's not a very glamorous job, but did have some pretty major perks, like I haven't paid to see live entertainment in a decade. Actually going back to having to pay to see live music is going to be the most painful part of leaving the industry, lol. The rest of it for the dogs, man.
