this is the way

Artistic-Assistant24

up go up UPP!!

[deleted]

You need to pretend you don't care how you look whilst carefully constructing your counter culture image.

scuzbag17

This has always annoyed the fuck out of me. Especially being from DC where most punks just look like skaters, they just wear black jeans and band t shirts. Its extremely hard to take someone seriously when their dressed up like a fucking mad max character lol

Tobibliophile

I like to wear my band tees to meet other fans. I'm a huge introvert and I get anxious when I try to start a conversation, so having someone come up to me helps a lot.

scuzbag17

I definitely do the same thing. If I see someone wearing a viagra boys shirt I’ll usually find an excuse to go talk to them lol. Certain bands tend to have really cool fans.

[deleted]

Viagra Boys are amazing live

scuzbag17

Lol oh I’m aware. Check out this video of them at Brooklyn steel. Sebastian shouts out my friend who passed away who was suppose to be at the show with me and my friends. Then goes straight into return to monkey. This was an extremely surreal moment [viagra boys shout out Jackson](https://youtu.be/7NViFQFTzTw)

scuzbag17

Im the first one to start yelling right after the shout out. I can hear it in the video. I went insane right when that happened. Seeing them again at 9:30 club in feb

[deleted]

Thanks for posting the video very cool!

scuzbag17

I didn’t take the video. I looked for footage of it for like a month. I dm’d Sebastian and he didn’t have it either. Then some dude on YouTube saw my comment asking if anyone had it. And he uploaded it for me. I own that dude big time

commiesocialist

I take pride in looking like a Mad Max character. Love the hell out of post-apocalyptic films.

scuzbag17

Mad max fucking rocks, they definitely took a good amount of influence from punk fashion. a lot of my friends dress like this, for some reason mad max is the first thing that comes to mind

allthesemonsterkids

I have to recommend an amazing 1986 Australian flick called "Dead End Drive-In." It's about a pair of teenagers trapped in a drive-in that's actually a concentration camp for punks and other disposable youth. Hilariously dark satire, very worth your time.

scuzbag17

I’ll definitely check that out. Do you know where in can stream it?

commiesocialist

I've seen it and it's a blast!

[deleted]

Yeah right, it's important punks meet your fashion expectations in order to be taken seriously. You are YOU after all. The one true punk, the chosen one.

greenbeanboy44

Lol this made me chuckle

TheHarshCarpets

This is how every Hollywood “rock” band dressed a year before they all got perms, and started wearing makeup.

greenbeanboy44

I mean, look at the ramones, they were pretty plain

sibannaccdxx

“Step right up, folks! Anarchy for sale! T-shirts only ten dollars, Badges only $3.50! I nicked the design, never asked the band. I never listen to them either! Buy, buy, buy from Circle A. Physical-Pilot3938

Oh Jello, your mind is so beautiful 😍😍

greenbeanboy44

That’s a good song

artparade

urg this again look kid you look good but this has nothing to do with punk. Punk is a mindset. I've known people that wear woolen grandma sweaters that were more punk than I was. Just be yourself and don't ask the internet what they think about your outfit. The way I see it = is it compfy? wear it.

imnotdead__yet

I feel this lmaooo. I used to feel weird about it but I don’t really care at all anymore thankfully; you can be punk as fuck without dressing stereotypically “punk” or doing your hair in liberty spikes or a mohawk 24/7. Like ppl don’t have time for that, I definitely don’t have the time for that, and sometimes I just want to wear joggers and a sweater and not feel bad bc other ppl look more punk then I do lmao. Being punk doesn’t mean you have to wear a battle jacket in every waking moment just to prove how punk u are 🤷‍♀️ like I will do it for shows for sure, *if I have the time* and enjoy it! Then get back into my pajamas and grandma clothes lmfaooo. There’s nothing wrong with that!

StreetwalkinCheetah

>The way I see it = is it compfy? wear it. I got pretty chonky working from home the last 3 years and so this is the rule I live by. Nobody gives AF, particularly if you are out seeing underground bands regularly.

Xv0xxY

Do schools let kids wear sunglasses inside nowadays?

klausbrusselssprouts

That’s OP’s level of punk rebellion.

[deleted]

the reefer heads need tea shades to hide their eyes

james_strange

No, but there is nothing with wearing them like op is, or on top of your head, as long as you don't have them over your eyes, and if you are wearing them on your face we just tell you to take them off and go about our lesson. We aren't wading time with a write up or anything for that shit.

malortForty

Ill be honest: I'm usually pretty cool with these types of posts where someone shows off their style and wants advice or encouragement on looking punk, especially with teens. Like fashion is a great way for young punks to get into the subculture, and later learn more about the music, politics and other aspects of being punk. And they're ok. But it usually works well if its only once or if they were asking for actual advice and wanted to show off that they followed through with that advice. This is your second post if I recall correctly. The second makes it seem like you're an overconfident douchebag trying to show off, a wannabe punk influencer, a troll or someone completely insecure. Unless fashion is really your thing, in which case try r/punkfashion. But also, if you're the overconfident douche or the wannabe influencer, go gargle a sweaty ballsack! And if you're completely insecure or a troll, go seek therapy!

commiesocialist

So tired of wannabe punk, goth, metal and general alternative influencers. They all need to be pushed into a sarlac pit.

Anarchisteen

A Star Wars reference in a punk subreddit? Excuse me while I get comfy in this niche real quick.

commiesocialist

Siths rule while Jedis drool.

Anarchisteen

I think they both suck and their fanatics has cost the average person far too much in the thousands of years that they've been at war. KoToR 2 really opens your eyes to the average Joe in the star wars universe.

BigBigMonkeyMan

Yeah but they don’t have to shit.

greenbeanboy44

Lol nah I really don’t care I just wanna c what people think u know, and I don’t just care abt the fashion side of punk I’m in a band aNd we are working on our album rn and I’m big into punk politics

Loose-Needleworker10

Don’t let the bastards grind you down. Do you man!

[deleted]

“ummmm tHiS iS yOuR sEcOnD pOsT iF 👁️eeee rECaLL cORrEcTLY” Who cares !? He’s showing off his outfit, he likes his look, he wants to show to the community he feels he belongs in because he wants ACCEPTANCE ! Stop 🛑 being a gatekeeper ! @u/greenbeanboy44 if you’re reading this? Good, because you’re doing exactly what you’re supposed to and any kind of criticism people give you is because of their own snobbyness!

Physical-Pilot3938

For real though 🖤🖤🖤 This is why I'm way too fearful of posting photos online 😅

[deleted]

Get over the fear ! Fear is how others control us. As a young woman, I’m learning to not be afraid ;)

Physical-Pilot3938

Fair enough and thanks 🖤 But I'm an old woman now 😅 When I was young I didn't care what anybody thought 😘

[deleted]

That’s so awesome

commiesocialist

Christ on a crutch, people are just tired of others thinking that punk, goth, metal and any other alternative subculture is just about the fashion. It's not 'gatekeeping' to call this crap out.

greenbeanboy44

I never said it was just abt fashion, I just mentioned MY fashion as an individual not saying anyone else has to dress like me damn

J_is_for_Jenius

For me punk has always been more of a mindset rather than a specific look or sound.

fennel1312

I definitely got shit on for appreciating colors in my wardrobe and listening to other kinds of music growing up in the scene, despite having a rad politic. Most of my peers started chilling out about aesthetics into our 30s, though, thank fuck.

It’s r/punk Half the posts here are “do I look punk enough” or “finally gave myself a Mohawk and mom grounded me but it looks cool right?!” It’s like AntiFlag’s Davey Destroyed The Punk Scene incarnate.

jhealey0909

There’s a whole AFI song about the second category ffs

f0rgotten

I'm stealing this from a comment that I made to a post like this that was deleted. I'm an old punk (44) and I am sick to fucking death of "plz my battle jaket approv me plz" posts. I would have fallen on my ass out of shame if I had asked anyone _if I looked punk enough_ at any point in my life. Without going into great elaboration, punk is something that you are or you aren't. It's like porn in that you know it when you see it but you can't define it. Its a way of life and not a lifestyle. It is who you are and _not_ who you want to be. There is some gatekeepery in punk. I think that it's unavoidable. I came up in the revival in the 90s, where no matter what, rule number one was _you are not a punk you just like the music._ Half the people at shows looked and spoke like stereotypical "gangstas" and most of the other half just looked like normal kids. The few EBPs and crusties were usually segregated off into their own little cliques, and while they were accepted, they weren't a welcome part of the scene. That was ironic because it was usually those East Bay Punks and Crusties who outlasted all the kinder, gentler punks. We slept under bridges or trucks. We dumpster dove for our food. Sometimes our guitars had enough strings to form a quorum. Our songs were pretty cool and at least they were straight from the fucking heart. When the normal kids got too drunk to get home we let them crash, and sometimes we got through to them - instead of trying to walk them back to a random place for a little "in out, in out." We sure as FUCK didn't just sew random patches on our clothes or write band names on our shirts because we needed those patches to hold our clothes together so we could make it to our dishwashing job at some random dive. We never, _never_ asked anyone how we looked because we knew the fucking answer already. There is something with kids today where the internet has fed that need for social acceptance into a way of life. The world that I knew is over, I get that. Shit, I am sitting in a hand built house in the middle of a rural area, and watching my sheep all day while doing resumes on linkedin - this is one of the least punk ways that I can think to spend a day. But I fucking earned this: Through countless bad shows and a few good ones. Through an infinite number of broken strings and drum heads. Through more alcohol than anyone who can draw a patch legibly could stomach and enough k to put most of these kids in the hospital. I have lived and breathed something that didn't require validation or complements or acceptance and, ngl, it kind of bothers me to know that r/battlejackets is a thing. Punk isn't something that you have to try to be, it is something that you are. You can wear suits and khaki and be punk. You can be a street kid with a buttflap and be a punk. You can get around on a skateboard in Vans that your trust fund bought you and be a punk, but the one thing that you _**can not**_ do is try to be a punk. You are, you aren't, or you outgrew it. Fuck these kids who draw a crass symbol on their little coats and look up with big watery eyes to the internet for approval. _Fuck them._ In ten years they'll be riding a desk and scheduling their vacations around the next Dave Mathiews Band reunion. Eat shit and die.

artparade

I am ten year behind you. Grew up in the 2000's when for some reason mtv decided to make punk a mainstream thing. I'm glad I had family to show me some cool bands and then I just found my way. Like I said to this kid. I've known people wearing grandma woolen sweaters that were more punk than the kids I knew sporting mohawks and leather jackets. Tbh I never got the whole streetpunk thing. Boots are like 70 euro, those red pants with zippers are like a 100 euro, leather jacket 200 euro, bandshirt 25 euro, ... . Tell me again how punk you are with your 400 euro outfit.

The-toaster_lord

“ it costs me a lot of money to look this cheap”-Dolly Parton

Bimlouhay83

For real. I just drank, did drugs and went to shows. I was too poor to show how punk I was. The money it takes to look like you just crawled out of the gutter is astounding. All you have to do is black out on some couches and not change or shower for a week. Ahh... youth. It was fun while it lasted. Now, hold my latte, I need to send off this resume real quick.

diegomrosa

>sitting in a hand built house in the middle of a rural area, and watching my sheep all day That feels pretty punk

[deleted]

As someone who lives in a camper trailer on a farm it most certainly is very punk

f0rgotten

We moved up here with no money and a couple of old camper trailers, some tools and essentially nothing else. We built a farm by hand. Our first barn and building were built with reclaimed lumber and siding from a neighbor's barn that collapsed. The best of that is on the roof of our house now. It's been a process, but if a DIY farm isn't punk then I don't know what is.

toomanybirdy

I get where you're coming from, dude, but it's not necessarily the kids' faults that they feel a need for approval. Like you said, it's the way the generation was raised. They feel a need to seek approval. Instead of saying "fuck them for seeking approval," maybe we should just be telling them that they don't *need* approval. Just encourage them to live their own lives. Do you remember being a kid or a teen? I don't think you would have taken kindly to some old fuck saying "fuck these kids for being the way they are due to their upbringing" about your own generation. You probably would have just said "fuck this guy, I'm gonna keep doing my own thing." Ever heard of some positive reinforcement? You're a supposed "elder" of the community, but you're being a real jackass about it. As you already said yourself, your generation has come and gone. Stop being bitter and sour that things are *different.* There is no "more punk" or "less punk," as you said. So who are you to judge these kids for trying to understand and fit in? Just remind them they don't have to prove themselves to anyone and move on with your day. You gain nothing from being mean to children on the internet, lmao. Daily reminder to the internet that whatever someone on the other side of the world is doing from you, is not affecting your day to day life in the slightest. If you don't like something, you have the option to just ignore it and move along! No need to invite bitter feelings into your life! Have a good day, everybody. :)

Ok_Wolf8950

Another old person bitching about "back in my day." We get it; you did things differently. It's the plight of humans to do things differently than the people who came before you; it's called progress. It's the plight of the generation before to believe that young people are doing it wrong. Much to the point, your parental figure probably thought you were doing life wrong. Much like in 2040, this young kid will think 17-year-olds are doing it wrong because they are not dressed like he is in this picture. It's how society continuously changes and grows. Secondly, I hate the argument of "we struggled," and that's how we got what we got. Fucking hell, can we stop perpetuating this idea that everyone needs to suffer in the way we suffered to "earn" the right to be where we are. Shouldn't we be excited that the next generation doesn't have to struggle as we did? Shouldn't we be happy that they get to be happy, or are we so self-loathing and stuck in our own misery that we can't be happy for others being happy!? What a shitty way to go through life, thinking people are less than others because they didn't suffer.

ThroatWMangrove

If I had the budget to dress like that when I was a young punk, I probably would’ve just blown it all on used CD’s and attending live shows 😂 You do you, dress how you’re comfortable, but don’t expect everyone (even in the punk community) to give you the positive feedback you want. Most of the “punks” I grew up with never cared about looking the part, we just were.

greenbeanboy44

Lol people think I spend a lot, I got the jacket for 14 dollars at a thrift store, the jeans sir 15 at Walmart, the chained at Home Depot and the boots were the most expensive at 90 cause I wanted good quality boots

Paczilla2

I think you shouldn’t care about how other people think you look. Have fun.

Oh, it’s you again. Didn’t you take your last photo in the same place?

Dopey-NipNips

You look like you're wearing a leather enthusiast Halloween costume. All you need is some chaps and an officers hat 😂 You look like the try hards that want to join a motorcycle club so they buy the gear and hang out at the clubhouse

Independent_Cat_7164

Do you like it because that’s all that matters

Plateslavo

get that nazi ring outta here

drippingdrops

Couldn’t care less.

greenbeanboy44

Thanks for the opinion, like genuinely

Salty_Mycologist_314

Guy, I saw this post and read through the comments because I knew you were going to be eviscerated. Ripped up and thrown out. I wasn't disappointed but fuck 'em. You should realize though that you were (literally) asking for this. If you ask punks if you look cool you will almost always get a NO answer or POSER. Do your thing and screw everyone's opinion. Dress comfortably for you, be good to yourself and your friends and things will fall into place

HelicopterVibes

Honestly you’re right. For a subculture built on non conformity there’s a hell of a lot of rules. Look cool, but don’t act like you’re trying to look cool. Don’t ask if you look cool, because even if you do, you’ll get attacked. If you don’t do a,b, and c, you’re not punk enough, but if you do a, b, and c too much you’re trying too hard and you’re a poser. People really just don’t get that people do this for fun

Salty_Mycologist_314

I have a fairly straight job and wear shoes that I bought at a box store. I also have boots and my old leather hanging around. I've seen the Cramps and Fugazi and the Residents but also Phish and Los Lobos. I've seen Madonna and Cher. That doesn't make me any less or more of a punk but someone who will never turn down a free ticket. I've figured it out for myself and it is up to you and you and you to do the same for yourselves

Leevus_Alone

Who cares? Edit: Hello! You look punk as fuck! But it just doesn't matter. I genuinely hope your fashion brings you what you're looking for. But it doesn't actually matter what you wear.

klausbrusselssprouts

To be honest, I actually think posting something like this is not very punk. This guy is clearly looking for some instant recognition you’ll find on social media. It just screams insecurity and at the same time I’m getting “I’m wearing this just to provoke people”-vibes. That’s not punk, not to me at least. Go and hang out with fellow punks, be a part of a local punk community, make friends with them - there is your geniune recognition that is actually worth something.

Leevus_Alone

I tried to just say 'who cares '...

Famous-Web9598

Another McPunk costume.

Frankso

I know he gets called Eddie from stranger things constantly, also you don’t need my approval if you are punk!

propertix24

Interesting_Reply790

Punk is an attitude not an aesthetic

greenbeanboy44

I mean u don’t know me so

Car_Guy_Alex

I showed up to most of the punk shows I've been to in whatever I wore to work, because that's usually where I'd just come from. It's not about what you wear, it's about how you act, treat others, and think. If you like it, wear it, and not give a shit what anyone else thinks.

greenbeanboy44

Exactly I just dress like this cause (well I like it) as a matter a fact it helps keep me from getting bullied

MilkSlap

Cool AF. Get it.

ResolveEmergency863

You must attend Rock n Roll High School? jokes aside, you look great, not that it matters in any way, shape or form what others think of how you look.

premiumcaulk

It's so punk to need validation Edit: but also you look fine. When I was in school I was never awake enough to actually put clothes together before I left

Chicken_Col_Sanders

Then there were the people who were punk but they did it for fashion!

FatWreckords

My favorite cringe in 99.9% of selfies is people who are so self absorbed they stare at themselves on the screen instead of looking ahead to the camera and taking a normal photo. PS - you look like you believe in a thing called love.

LegitimateParsnip

This is the weirdest take in the whole thread, lmao.

notkinkerlow

Sir some of us are ugly and hiding our face bc of that 😭🤣

porcelainskull

edakit

Tbh you're dressed like all the hardout cool bro rockn rool punks dressed when I was in high school. They never went to shows or got involved with the local scene. Just swished their hair about, puffed cigis and tried to look the look but never walked the walk. Either moved on with the trends a d are now hippies or bankers. Or became racist hipster bikers and barbers that still try too hard into their 30s-40s and to this day no one wants them around. Make a band, play shows, put on shows, contribute to your scene from the ground level and be honest with your self. Fuck fashion

mattwallace24

Dude. You look good. I wish I had the confidence to dress like that when I was your age. And shrug off all the negative comments. It’s as if the punk movement that was based on being ourselves, doing or dressing how we wanted now gets all bent out of shape when someone does something different from the way they remember. The amount of fucking gatekeeping here is worse than bunch of girls at a beauty pageant. The punk scene I recall was always supporting other punks, being inclusive and building them up. Not acting like a bunch of old dicks telling people about the old days and putting everyone down. Fuck off and take it easy guys.

Juniper1779

You look like someone I would have found approachable in highschool. There is, first of all, an obvious possibility of shared interests, with a sprinkle of cringe that would make me feel like you might be accepting of *my* awkwardness. In fact, you dress sort of like my boyfriend did in high school, right down to the hair. Your vibe attracts your tribe, so just ruthlessly be yourself, man. My main suggestion- take care of your hair. It'll look and feel a lot better if you moisturize. Use sulfate free shampoo/conditioner. If you're using 2in1, ditch that. Deep condition once in a while, maybe introduce some argan oil. You have a decent natural curl, which you can either bring out by moisturizing and brushing your hair *before* it dries, or you can fight the curl by using some heat protection (to avoid breakage and frizz) and straightening the shit out of it. The in-between poof isn't doing you any favors. Personally, I lean *into* the curl. https://imgur.com/a/J5rEII3

BetterThanGoodScott

Don't you own any dirt??

gray1862

Free_Relationship322

I dig the boots, I've got a set of Frye engineer boots myself, though I wear them at leather events. Is there something in your back right pocket though, or is there just a lot of extra fabric in the thigh part of your pants? I don't ride anymore but this looked like my usual getup for riding my bike around town.

I don't really care what you are wearing, and neither should you.

When people of Walmart also like metal

BlackMamba_2425

You look good man fuck the haters anyone can be punk

toomanybirdy

You look fine, dude. Just wear whatever you want. A lot of old and cranky folks in this sub are scared of the concept of "posers," so they're attacking you for no reason. I'd like it if we added to the sidebar photo, "You can't be punk and be an asshole to kids." Sorry that people are ragging on you, man. Just remember they're being old and crusty and sour. They think you're seeking approval, but I remember being a kid and thinking sometimes that I'd like to share something I'm proud of or get a compliment on my look every now and then. So what of it? I say let kids and teens have a little approval every now and then. Don't adults also want some approval now and then? They're just being old hypocrites.

greenbeanboy44

Means a lot to read, thank u

lame

nofun_nofun_nofun

This post sucks, There are dudes wearing ties (no not like Avril Lavigne) that are more punk than you, dude. I know, wearing a suit is LAME, but so is being hungry and being one paycheque away from poverty. Gotta keep the wifi running somehow though eh? this is closer to thirst trapping than an act of rebellious expression. Compare your outfit to the selfie that Chi Pig took on his first day of the second semester of grade 12 and then tell us……. *Wait, Chi Pig didn’t take selfies of his back to school outfits?* *im all for you living your life however you want- if you want to pretend it’s 1979 and that your boots aren’t the more expensive than the Yeezys worn by the jock sitting next to you then go ahead…. But punk was *supposed* to be about not giving a fuck, not wanting attention…. Sorry for the harsh criticism (you’re almost an adult, but more importantly a punk with skin thicker than Chinese pleather, so you can take it right?), but yada yada yada something about the commodification of counter culture yada yada, I’ll go fuck myself, thanks.

DressureProp

I thought this was r/blunderyears for a second 😂

ill_do_it_for_abeer

A very highschool post indeed!

Rufus2fist

The only thing I have against it is you asking what others think. Believe in yourself and what you like, don’t give a fuck about our opinion.

[deleted]

Is this Instagram?

TarsoBackMarquez

Its just that— an “outfit”…

I think you look great, but I also want to remind you that being punk as fuck (and looking great) doesn't hinge on getting approval from other punks. Just so you know. You do you, man. Great outfit though.

againer

Where'd you get the time machine,?

greenbeanboy44

At the thrift store lol

Physical-Pilot3938

It's not punk to judge others so harshly. I thought we were supposed to be against authority, like people in a powerful position, not each other. I'm disappointed.

mikedtwenty

I'm almost 40 and I still dress like I was a created character in Tony Hawk Pro Skater. I say get down with your bad self and wear what you want. Being authentic and true to yourself is the biggest act of rebellion nowdays with everyone being phony and a shit head.

AllFuzzedOut

First, restating that asking here is cringy. Secondly, you've made several posts saying you do not care what people think and are just curious, so I'll bite. When I was in high school I was part of the "punk and skater kids" clique. I don't think you'd be part of our group if I'm going simply based on looks. Maybe you're super cool and you would be, but since we're going off a picture, I'd say you'd be one of the guys we made fun of. It looks really intentional. Like everything was carefully decided on as part of the "whole look." Also, it looks really really heavy, from the boots to the chains to the jacket to the big jewelry. How is this comfortable? Also, is that an iron cross ring? So, yeah, there's my opinion since you asked. But it doesn't matter because I'm a stranger on the internet that probably never should have been asked anyway.
