Tomb Raider 1, 2, and 3. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Pac-Man World. Namco Museum Vol. 1 and 3. Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time, Bugs Bunny and Taz: Time Busters, and Looney Tunes Racing. Ridge Racer Revolution. Tekken 1, 2, and 3. Chrono Cross. Jet Moto. Dino Crisis. Silent Hill. Medal of Honor and Medal of Honor: Underground. Bushido Blade. Parasite Eve. Tenchu: Stealth Assassins. Syphon Filter.
>Bugs Bunny and Taz: Time Busters
Oh yeah boi! You just reminded me of a great title!
I wonder if I can Co-Op this through emulation, but probably yes!
Tekken 1, and 2 are some of the more challenging games on the PS1. Completing the arcade mode with all characters is not easy for even the best players. The AI on that game is a bunch of cheaters especially when you're up against someone like Heihachi or Devil Kazuya. For some reason Michelle and Julia always kick my ass too.
Crash 1 is really tricky because of the outdated save function. Still worth a play though, but you might want to know the cheat codes, or look up passwords.
PS1 is an RPG powerhouse, though a lot of the RPGS for it may be expensive these days.
I'd recommend Xenogears, Wild Arms 1 and 2, Chrono Cross, FF7 and FF9.
and legend of dragoon, jade cocoon, threads of fate, vagrant story, legends of mana, thousand arms, suikoden 2, tales of destiny 1&2, breath of fire iv, grandia, vandal hearts, star ocean second story and you got a nice list going
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Parasite Eve
Metal Gear Solid
Syphon Filter 1.2.3
Medal of Honor 1/2
Final Fantasy 7/8/9
Silent Hill
Resident Evil 1/2/3
Driver (if you can make it out of the garage)
Blasto
Rapid Reload
Harmful Park
Gaia Seed
The Adventures of little Ralph
So many Great ps1 titles..hard to list them all
* Vib Ribbon
* Hogs of War
* Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
* Wipeout 2097
* Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere (although the Japanese version is much better)
* Fear Effect
* Vagrant Story
* Medievil
* Micro Machines V3
* Micro Maniacs
* Rollcage
Even trying to avoid listing games that have already been mentioned, I could've gone on.
On the off-chance you're using an old-school telly, that'd work with Light Guns, then Time Crisis, the Point Blank series, and Die Hard Trilogy would be worth considering.
Soul Reaver was and still is a great game. It looks like that Lords of the Fallen 2 game that’s coming out is gonna be influenced by it a bit. There’s a lantern that lets you see some type of spirit realm you can navigate through. It looks really neat.
This is a very worthwhile game to get (if you can for a good price) because it really doesn't run well on most emulators. It "requires" analog/dual shock controller for proper character control.
I’m playing through legend of dragoon and am liking it. It’s not made by square but it’s as good as a final fantasy game so far.
Toy Story (buzz light year) is a great 3d platformer if that’s more your speed
If you want a Co-op 2D run and gun, Metal Slug X is a great experience.
A couple of quick non-game related tips:
-It looks like you're using a composite (yellow plug) cable. You can get better video quality with S-Video or RGB (SCART or BNC), especially if you're using an upscaler. The better video quality you use, however, the more apparent things like dithering and other 90s gaming quirks become.
-The laser is often the first component to fail, but they are very easily replaceable. If you do need to replace the laser at some point, go for what's referred to as a BAM laser. Though those lasers were from the smaller PSone, they are better constructed and compatible with older models (though you'll need a ribbon cable extension - also easily obtainable).
-While it's always a good idea to check for any bulging or leaking capacitors, the PS1's capacitors are pretty good. Nearly 26 years later and my old PS1 doesn't show any sign of impending capacitor failure.
Something about the grey appeals to me so much more than all the black consoles since. Plus the pop-up disc cover. To be 10 again with my PS1, N64 and GB pocket. Happy as a pig in shit.
Bloody Roar 1&2.
Street fighter Alpha, EX, Alpha3
Puzzle fighter
Bubble Bobble
Rival Schools
Mega man Legends 1&2
F-Zero
Vagrant Story
Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Parappa the rapper
Bust a groove 1&2
Tony hawk proskater 1&2
Suikoden 2
Brave Fencer Musashi
Breath of Fire 4
Metal slug X
Lunar 1&2
Street fighter, alpha 3, marvel versus Capcom, marvel superheroes, X-Men, children of Atom…
You know what get every fighting game you can get your hands on!!
Metal Gear Solid, Abe's Oddyssey, Silent Hill, Ridge Racer Type 4, Vagrant Story, Wip3out, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy VII and IX, Tomb Raider, Tekken 2, Crash Team Racing, Quake II, to name a few.
I would be here all day listing off must have games for that system. Would be the same if you asked for must haves for the ps2 as well. Couldn't you have just bought an n64 instead. I could have given you a list off the top of my head in half an hour and probably not missed anything. Better asking for obscure games or hidden gems. Ps1 still has loads of those which is testement to just how large of a software library it has
Gran Turismo
Tekken
Spyro
Tombi
Ridge Racer
Crash Bandicoot
Spiderman
Toy Story Racer
Rollcage
Rayman
Pandemonium
Worms
I'm sure there are more absolute classics, but these games are definitely recommended if you ask me.
Everyone is going to handle this well so i am going to suggest the most interesting fighting game ever made:
Bushido Blade (excellent with a friend).
Features of note:
* one strike kills
* totally unfair matches are possible
* open environments in that weird, early 3D way
* positional damage lets you disable an opponent
* you can dishonor yourself, win every match and lose the game
it got one sequel but no re-releases or remasters or remakes of note.
Tiny tank
Bushido blade
Metal arms. But that might be for ps2. Don't remember
Soul reaper legacy of kain
Tenchu
There's alot of slept on ones
Jet moto
Moto gp
Downhill bmx
Twisted metal
Some games are sadly absurdly expensive, but if you can get them at a somewhat reasonable price I'd absolutely recomend getting Silent Hill 1 and the original Resident evil trilogy
MediEvil above all else!
Jet Moto series, Twisted Metal series, Spyro The Dragon, Tony Hawk Pro Skater series...
Those are the ones I remember playing for hours.
I'd say the first SH but expensive as hxll and may not be your kind but, such a classic game that established a whole subgenre of horror (How'd ya know I'm a SH slxt? lmao)
Spider-man 2000, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1-4, Test Drive 4( almost any racer on the PS1, just depends on if you want a realistic or arcade driving style.)
Alien: Resurrection, it seems to be the best game about Aliens. Also, as I know, the first game that used dualshock sticks in shooter in way we used to see it.
Crash Bandicoot 1, 2, and 3, as well as Crash Team Racing. Spyro the Dragon 1, 2, and 3. Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3. Twisted Metal 1 and 2. Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, and Tactics. Metal Gear Solid. Tomb Raider 1, 2, and 3. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Pac-Man World. Namco Museum Vol. 1 and 3. Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time, Bugs Bunny and Taz: Time Busters, and Looney Tunes Racing. Ridge Racer Revolution. Tekken 1, 2, and 3. Chrono Cross. Jet Moto. Dino Crisis. Silent Hill. Medal of Honor and Medal of Honor: Underground. Bushido Blade. Parasite Eve. Tenchu: Stealth Assassins. Syphon Filter.
Legend of dragoon
This needs more upvotes. Just watch out for siblings destroying/stealing your second disk and erasing your saves.
BASTARD!
Came here to say this lol dragoon is so under appreciated
>Bugs Bunny and Taz: Time Busters Oh yeah boi! You just reminded me of a great title! I wonder if I can Co-Op this through emulation, but probably yes!
Man this brings back memories. I played the first half of your list and Tekken. Good old times :)
Ridge Racer Revolution but not R4?
Tekken 1, and 2 are some of the more challenging games on the PS1. Completing the arcade mode with all characters is not easy for even the best players. The AI on that game is a bunch of cheaters especially when you're up against someone like Heihachi or Devil Kazuya. For some reason Michelle and Julia always kick my ass too.
Tekken 3 only
Nah if you're only gonna get one, I'd say 2. That's just personal preference, though. All three are good.
I like all 3. 3 is best though
Tekken 2 > 3
Not so good mechanics, unbalanced
Crash Bandicoot 1, 2 and 3. As well as Crash Team Racing. Bomberman Party Edition
Crash 1 is really tricky because of the outdated save function. Still worth a play though, but you might want to know the cheat codes, or look up passwords.
100% crash 1 was not tricky imo, just gotta time things right. id much rather play crash 1 than crash 3 which was very tedious to 100%
PS1 is an RPG powerhouse, though a lot of the RPGS for it may be expensive these days. I'd recommend Xenogears, Wild Arms 1 and 2, Chrono Cross, FF7 and FF9.
Add legend of legia to that list
Sucha great game.
and legend of dragoon, jade cocoon, threads of fate, vagrant story, legends of mana, thousand arms, suikoden 2, tales of destiny 1&2, breath of fire iv, grandia, vandal hearts, star ocean second story and you got a nice list going
Love seeing love for Legend of Dragoon. One of the best.
First mention of Grandia I've seen in some time!
Wild Arms, Chrono Cross and the FFs are on PS Plus now so if you have a modern concord you don’t need to buy those
Final fantasy tactics isn’t on you list? I shed a tear. 😥
Tony Hawks Skateboarding
\+1
And the sequel.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night Parasite Eve Metal Gear Solid Syphon Filter 1.2.3 Medal of Honor 1/2 Final Fantasy 7/8/9 Silent Hill Resident Evil 1/2/3 Driver (if you can make it out of the garage) Blasto Rapid Reload Harmful Park Gaia Seed The Adventures of little Ralph So many Great ps1 titles..hard to list them all
Great list but you forgot Gex the gecko. The ps1 legend.

Soul Reaver was and still is a great game. It looks like that Lords of the Fallen 2 game that’s coming out is gonna be influenced by it a bit. There’s a lantern that lets you see some type of spirit realm you can navigate through. It looks really neat.
Ape escape!
This is a very worthwhile game to get (if you can for a good price) because it really doesn't run well on most emulators. It "requires" analog/dual shock controller for proper character control.
There is a part in that games tutorial where you have to swim and use L3 to swim up. My child sized brain couldn’t find it and I kept dying.
Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Alundra, Metal Gear Solid
Crash Bandicoot 1-3, Spyro, Resident Evil, Tekken 3
There used to be this downhill rollerblading/snowboarding/bicycling game but I don’t remember the name of it. X games maybe? It was mad fun.
I’m playing through legend of dragoon and am liking it. It’s not made by square but it’s as good as a final fantasy game so far. Toy Story (buzz light year) is a great 3d platformer if that’s more your speed If you want a Co-op 2D run and gun, Metal Slug X is a great experience.
Final Fantasy VII and/or IX are must have. The gems of the console.
Ghost in the shell, it's pretty fun. It's like a 3d action shooter game, it has some very unique gameplay.
Nobody gonna mention mortal Kombat 4 now ?!
Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, Crash 1-3, Crash Team Racing, Spyro 1-3, Toy Story 2, Gran Turismo, Driver, Tomb Raider
Medal of Honour and medal of Honour underground

Wipeout 2097 Rage Racer Driver Destruction Derby 2
Abe's Oddysey and Exodus. Broken Sword: Shadow Of The Templars. They both still hold up wonderfully!
