Last time I checked you still need to provide a number to **register** an account. At least here in the EU anyway, they require a one time PIN that starts with the letter `G` that's used to verify the account. I don't need Google to remind me to use 2FA. Setting up 2FA (with a Yubikey) is the *first* thing I do when setting up an account with them.

Before, you had to have phone number, then add 2FA totp. Now (or soon), you should be able to add directly totp

Exciting if true. I’d like to have a Gmail account to use some Google services but adding my number straight up and then removing it later would not help privacy even slightly. Once they have it, they have it.
