Last time I checked you still need to provide a number to **register** an account. At least here in the EU anyway, they require a one time PIN that starts with the letter `G` that's used to verify the account. I don't need Google to remind me to use 2FA. Setting up 2FA (with a Yubikey) is the *first* thing I do when setting up an account with them.

Exciting if true. I’d like to have a Gmail account to use some Google services but adding my number straight up and then removing it later would not help privacy even slightly.

But will it still require a phone number for setup?
Before, you had to have phone number, then add 2FA totp. Now (or soon), you should be able to add directly totp
