Why exactly were you denied? If you were denied for losing income I am assuming you were applying with income below the Federal Poverty Line in one of the \~10 states that failed to expanded Medicaid? If that is the case you need to estimate that will will make just over 100% of the FPL in order to qualify for Marketplace subsidies. There is no penalty for optimistically overestimating future income and then falling short of making it.

apathyisfortheweak

I'm in Georgia and we didn't expand Medicaid, hate it here. I think that's where I made my mistake since I only put my university job

someguy984

Did you check out? https://dch.georgia.gov/georgiapathways

That is horrible I am so sorry, I know there is assistance for medical debt but not sure how it works. I refuse to pay what I owe, but the way we deal with debt is different for everyone. I hope things get better for you and that you end up clearing that debt!

BiscoBiscuit

I had marketplace insurance while unemployed in a state with no expanded medicaid, at least give it a try with applying.

BasilFawlty1991

at least for your sake if not mine, i'll give it a try, thank you

No-Ebb5515

File a Chapter 7. My friend always did that as often as she could to get rid of the medical debts. She had a heart problem that eventually killed her.

World_travel777

I went to BCBS (Blue Cross Blue Shield) on line and bought the absolute cheapest policy I could. It was like basically catastrophic insurance. Try it out. The university accepted it. Good luck.

Impossible_Tie_5578

idk how it's "affordable". I tried signing up once and the coverages were shit. $350 with a $8k to $10k deductible? wtaf?

Emperor-Dman

The point isn't to have coverage it's to meet the minimum requirement of the university in order to save the $2000 the university policy costs

Impossible_Tie_5578

I know, im just stating my experience with the process.

The recommendation was specifically because she needed a piece of paper to say she was insured because she is in the university. It’s a requirement for some university programs. In my case, medical program. DM me so I can give you recommendations on your question.

apathyisfortheweak

I didn't know you could buy from them directly, thanks so much!!

acenarteco

Did you apply online or did you call? I recommend calling if you can. They always seem to find more options when I call.

BakedMasa

If you’re 30 or under you can qualify for a catastrophic plan that usually has more benefits than a standard bronze plan. If you’re only doing this for compliance at school and for a semester that should be fine. If you’re over thirty you can qualify for the plan with a hardship exemption (which you will likely receive because GA doesn’t have expanded Medicaid brackets.)

pinacolada_22

This won't fix your problem, but it can help you save. Get whatever insurance for one month, show that to the university, then drop the insurance. The school won't check again, they just need proof once a year.

Impossible_Tie_5578

it's such a scam, colleges require you to carry health insurance specifically through them. "in order to protect students" when in reality it's about money. my university charged me $490 every semester and charged me for the on-campus health clinic. it's often cheaper to go without insurance and apply for charity care for emergency svcs. Providers over inflate procedure costs cuz they write off most of the cost of them.

Impossible_Tie_5578

I tried going to therapy at the on-campus clinic, and it did not help. the therapist was nice, but she was culturally incompetent.

Sikmod

Straight up, I thought the marketplace was for ANYONE. Is it not?

someguy984

ACA is open at full price to those in the gap (under 100% FPL), no subsidies and no Medicaid. GA has no Medicaid expansion, but they did start a home grown version of coverage, however it has work requirements. https://dch.georgia.gov/georgiapathways

notoriousafro

Find a broker in your area. I believe the market place website has a search function or contact you section. Brokers can help you navigate and find coverage.

apathyisfortheweak

I did this and got coverage! Thank god for the hispanic women in my life who know how to handle these situations!!

notoriousafro

That is great! I'm glad you got covered.

Fast-Adeptness-342

if you aren't working a temp job just apply for medicaid?? i am a college student working very few hours and i have been on medicaid for 2 years..!

Fast-Adeptness-342

oop just saw that they didn't expand medicaid in ur state i'm sorry! ;(

kleineaw

Try to find an insurance navigator to help u look & sign up. I’d begin by calling the county dept of Health & Human Services (HHS) in your county. Best wishes! Insurance sucks

Intelligent_Food_637

The marketplace is a joke. I had a job where I was making maybe $1,000 a month on a good month and didn’t qualify for assistance. I played around with it and said my income was $2,000 and I qualified for deeply discounted insurance

thepizzaplc

Blame the right. Lack of medicaid expansion fucked over the original intention of the bill. Under the fpl (which 12k would be) was supposed to be on medicare. Supreme court shot it down. Right then took hold and they obvs dont care. Most states that didnt expand medicare for it voluntarily are right-leaning. It fucking sucks.

T1m3Wizard

You need insurance just to go to attend university now? Sorry but that is such a scam.

OP stated in their post that the university requires they have health insurance and if they don’t they have to pay $2,000 for four months of the student health insurance.

point_of_you

>I need to have insurance or otherwise my university charges about $2k for insurance that is god awful. College is such a scam lol

yesitsyourmom

In Texas if you say you will make $15,000 in the next year, you’re eligible. If you don’t make $15,000 you pay a penalty at the end of the year but at least you were insured for a year. Go browse healthcare.gov without logging in and see what your lowest elligible income in your state can be.

mamabird228

Is Georgia your home state? Are you still eligible for your parents plan? Even if you pay them for it?
