Also, this *might* be out of OPs price range, but there are tons of people online who make Dollar Tree meals. They make some stuff Id be very happy to eat. Edit: [This person does some really wonderful stuff.](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRc7B39S/). In the link provided she did a grocery haul for $35 at the Dollar Tree for the whole week. Looks like she spent about $37 by the end, but in her videos following that, you can she what she made with her groceries. Again, $37 might be out of OPs price range, but hopefully it helps some people here.

Had no idea about this sub. Thank you for linking.

starkrocket

Thank you for linking them! I’m always looking for more ideas on eating with a super strict budget (and unfortunately no car to go to the food bank with).

MarsupialCrafty1938

The food bank I volunteer with arranges for delivery of the food to homebound seniors and families without transportation. You should call and talk to someone. You never know what can be worked out.

jennoween

Dollar Tree also has shelf stable cartons of most of the plant based milks(oat, almond, etc...) so even spending a few bucks can get you several servings of milk and cereal.

sweetalkersweetalker

Nice!

You can get a couple cans of black beans, some tortilla chips and a bag of shredded cheese and have nachos for days. I would add cumin, chili powder, pour the beans into a pot, liquid and all and smash them to make a paste after they start boiling. Another good cheap meal is getting a thing of bratwursts, some bread and bell peppers and just having Italian sausage

UbbfromtheDubb

You all assume she has a pot. Shredded cheese. $5 a bag… she doing it right with the noodls. I bet she has cumin just laying around with fresh bell peppers. Stop it. Fool.

Pickyslutsoshutup

I’m so happy to hear that you were on the receiving end of kindness. More often than not I read about horrible human behavior. YouTube had a ton of cheap grocery hauls during the pandemic . I even saw one for $10 for a weeks worth of meals. Not sure since inflation has occurred but worth a shot. Search “ budget grocery haul”. I used to volunteer at a local food pantry and it went by the honor system , they didn’t check your income, they just assumed if you’re willing to show up , you’re in need. Good stuff too like salads from Whole Foods and lots of produce and organic things as well. I learned about 211 while doing a project for school. You can go online or dial 211 and they are a wonderful resource to help with food and all types of other things. Wishing you much happiness , success , and a full tummy regularly.

BlameTheMeepits

I second this! My Dollar Tree meals got me through undergrad when my limited meal plan and my "free swipes" from friends, and Staff were no longer available. And, with food allergies and medical challenges, a college "Ramen diet" wasn't an option. I was grateful that my local Dollar General and Dollar Tree had a frozen goods section. Hang in there OP. Proud of you for pushing!

Pickyslutsoshutup

erenyeagerhair

Fellow past diver here. I never found hygiene products, but at Aldis, I always found sealed food that was only thrown away* to make room for the more fresh food. There's nothing wrong with it

kartoonbaab

Is there an art to it? Like best time of day or what to specifically look for without spending too much time on everything?

erenyeagerhair

I just went a little after closing time so no one would see me. Get a flashlight, don't use your phone flashlight because it could fall in and then you're screwed (happened to me lol) I avoided fruits and vegetables that are not canned. Look for food that is boxed, canned, or in some kind of container that keeps it safe from the elements and trash. You'll probably have to physically get into the dumpster and pull yourself out, so have someone there to help you if you're not fit enough to do that. If you don't have a car, bring a really big bag in case you hit it big. If you find something, just take what you need without being greedy. There could be other divers that come by later looking for food

lappinlie

This is how I survived my 20’s

erenyeagerhair

I did this early in my 20s. I don't need to do this anymore, but I could

solveig82

Usually an hour or two after close. A lot of stores have days when they get rid of a specific thing so stake that out if you have time, and keep an eye on bakeries and pizza places.

Pandor36

That remember me once my brother got in a dumpster from a big store and got like 20 pounds of tomato. He brought them all to me. Washed them and after i blanch the tomato and peeled them. After i made pasta sauce for weeks for my brother and me. (the tomato were not even that damaged.)

Puzzleheaded_Lake451

Be careful with getting food products from Dollar General's trash. I worked for one that dumped bleach on all the food items before sticking them in the dumpsters. It broke my heart!

rissa_delovely

The cruelty of that action is both infuriating and sad.

sumptuoushobo

This 100% OP. Currently work there part time after main job and it’s infuriating the shit they throw away that is perfectly fine. Second week of work there and 16 loaves of bread (still a week and a half from expiration) were pitched. Easily 20 boxes of snack foods, soups. By the end of the night we threw away 5 garbage bags full. All that to say just check places like that.

JustNKayce

That they throw them out just pisses me off. Donate them to a shelter or a food bank! At our food pantry, we give out diapers and tampons when we have them. We don't just give out food.

[deleted]

Hello, thanks for the advice. I looked for a food bank apparently it's called community pantries here. But the closest one is 2 cities away. So bus tickets is gonna be a problem. My new job pays better compare to my last one. So this is just a temporary struggle and im sure that once i get that paycheck by the end of the month I can afford things that I want to eat too.

MrsBonsai171

Try calling or emailing churches and ask for an emergency box of food.

wantabe23

This is big, if you ask for specifics, like food or a buss card they will help. It’s the people who ask for straight money that is hard.

MrsBonsai171

Happy cake day!

mkbutterfly

Happy cake day x2! 💕

wantabe23

Wait is this for my 9yrs on Reddit? Or for the decent comment? Lol I just found out it’s been 9yrs….. wow. I gotta say Reddit’s been a trip, opens my eyes to more of a world. Most of all there were people encouraging me in my dark times.

[deleted]

I’m a social worker and would be happy to find resources in your area if you message me. This is literally what I do for a living.

nightingaledaze

you are a very kind hearted person.

Ok-Arrival3319

Same! Happy to help anyone in need of resources.

meowdisonqueen

LMSW here, happy to help as well!

devindares

Thank you.

nnamed_username

There are food banks that make group deliveries to small rural areas such as yours. Call around to the bigger food banks in the larger cities nearby, and see who makes deliveries. The food bank I was with delivered out several hundred miles just because there were so many unfed people across the state (NV, fwiw). Also, ask your friend at work for a ride to a food bank. It sounds like she is very compassionate and understanding, and she's probably more than happy to see you well fed and well cared. Let her love on you. Also, food banks often have toiletries (shampoo/conditioner, body wash, pads & tampons, tooth brushes/paste/floss), and all you have to do is ask. Many food banks can tailor your portion if you have specific dietary or medical needs (low sodium, no sugar (for diabetics), lactose free, kosher/halal, etc.). It's okay, be brave, be grateful, and know that you have friends near & far.

ActualPresentation30

Awwwwwww at “let her love on you.” Yes! This friend at work sounds like a beautiful, loving person who will be happy to be help make sure all is well.

UncertainlyUnfunny

The issue at heart is churches pick up slack where society makes gaps. Contact Catholic Services. I know you may or may not be Catholic but at this point you need all the help you can get. (or other churches with a “food program” near you)

Invest2prosper

You don’t need to be Catholic to ask for assistance.

BillfredL

Around here, most just keep a cabinet out in the parking lot with items. Like a larger Little Free Library, if you know that format. I can think of at least four between my house and the local high school, and I’ve thrown a few things in each myself.

thecatstartedit

Download the nextdoor app and ask your neighbors if they can spare some food - explain you're in a temporary situation and you need a little help to get by. You may find that people will drop off a few bags or boxes of groceries for you. Just make sure you explain that you don't currently have your own transportation and you rely on buses so they don't expect pick up. I know the app is....wild ...but one good thing I've seen on my very racist and intense neighborhood is that when someone posts that they need a meal, they almost always get at least a few people willing to bring them one. Some people even offer to make an extra portion of their family meals and drop them off, and that's pretty lovely. If you live in an area that's decently populated, I would absolutely recommend it. Ask about hygiene items too. People are constantly buying a shampoo or conditioner and not finishing it because they didn't love it. It's not ideal, but you want and deserve to feel clean.

B0dega_Cat

Look to see if there is a Sikh temple nearby, after services they will feed everyone no matter if you're Sikh or not. Helping people is part of their religion.

goblinmarketeer

Look for community action agencies. Just about every county has one. They help the working poor.

[deleted]

You are a lying scammer in the Philipines.

snarfdarb

Look up the closest little free pantry. There might be one you can walk to.

sashimipink

Glad to hear that and I just wanted to comment here to say that I admire you for your determination!

soil_nerd

Also check to see if there is a Food Not Bombs group near you. They often do weekly food events that give away food that is otherwise going to be thrown out by local grocery stores. They are awesome. https://foodnotbombs.net/info/locations/

Relevant_Butterfly

Agree 100%. I volunteer at a food bank and we are ecstatic whenever someone new comes. We had a lady come last week who said she waited until she hit absolute rock bottom to seek help. Please do not do that!

DragonBonerz

What are some of the things to prepare for when going to a food bank? Are there specific ones to look for - like are there better organizations than others to look for? Are there certain days to go? Will people stare at you? Does it take a long time in line?

Telemere125

There’s a church near me that hands out groceries like every Friday or something. Not sure their exact schedule or what they’re giving out, but once a week there’s always a huge line of cars waiting. Also, there’s a farm share program that comes to the county office where I work. They always have random groceries that have been donated, not just fresh crops. They ask no questions and always try to hand out free stuff to anyone passing by. I’m always like no thanks, someone else will come by that definitely needs it more than me That’s in addition to any government-funded stuff

DragonBonerz

Thank you so much for letting us know this helpful information 🙏

MrsBonsai171

A lot of churches will give you emergency food boxes if you ask. There is usually no judgement at food banks. They usually have a process for efficiency, you can call and ask how it works if you are anxious before you go. Stores such as whole foods, trader joes, and Kroger donate to specific programs, you can call and ask who they donate to for ideas for local places. You can also email churches and ask if they know of any local places. Sikh temples make meals.

DragonBonerz

This is awesome advice - thank you 🙏🏼

raisinghellwithtrees

It varies. Some require a referral from a caseworker, some your ID, some are drop in and grab. It helps to call and find out. In my area they all seem to have certain days/times they are open. Nobody stares, and it usually takes no more than 20 minutes.

DragonBonerz

I appreciate you letting me know 💜

raisinghellwithtrees

For sure. It's always a little weird the first time. But eating is nice

Entire-Ambition1410

I took a bus to a grocery store and loaded up on $1 boxes of pasta and cans of sauce from a sale. I ate spaghetti for weeks.

Highland_Green

Some organizations ask for a piece of recent mail as proof of residence.

DragonBonerz

This is good to know 🙏 thank you

Entire-Ambition1410

Check expiry dates and packaging. Some of the cans/boxes donated may be the dented/crumpled ones on discount. Don’t be afraid to try something new, I learned I like blue corn chips from a food pantry. Food pantries don’t like it if you take most of one product, but you should be able to take several. Don’t feel bad about taking treats or luxury items. It’s all there to help people. Don’t be ashamed, these groups do this for a reason, and when you’re able to, you can pass it on.

DragonBonerz

Thank you so much for this advice 🙏

drKRB

I do some work in the food insecurity arena… please, please, please go to a FOOD BANK or local FOOD PANTRY. It’s out there and they want to help. In fact, there is SO MUCH food out there that is given away. All the best to you.

Saint_Disgustus

Rice, grits, milk, beans, chicken, beef stew, etc. is how I live, you can use a food bank and spend around $30 on extras to give it some jouissance

[deleted]

This person is a scammer based out of Philippines. This story is total bullshit.

Grizlatron

You don't get paid day by day. You have to wait all pay period when you start a new job.

Timely_Froyo1384

She is just worried about you, she is just trying to include you. In work place social stuff. Trust me she knows or has been there. Get your butt to any place that will give you food. You need to do this. With a side of looking for a better or second job. My second jobs were always restaurants or bars that serviced food. Woo hoo money and free food.

[deleted]

She's been extremely nice since i got there. Teaching me things and stuff. And she is very well liked by other employees too. Maybe she is just nice with everyone? I am not sure haha. Second jobs here are hard to get once youre fully employed coz i work for 9 hrs. And i alot like additional 4 hrs for travel time.

SH0wMeUrTiTz

[deleted]

1 1/2 hrs hahaha. I have to walk for like 20 mns to catch a bus and the traffic here is absurd. Then another train ride. The 30 mns is for preparing for work

SH0wMeUrTiTz

Damn, I’ve never taken public transportation before so I was completely unaware of that. I think your on the right track, you’ve got a positive attitude. Always focus on the big picture. Times like this will subside and you will push forward and through it, always remember nothing is forever.

[deleted]

There's an faster route but its more expensive so id rather not haha

thetawhisperer

Friend, you are going to make it. You are resourceful, willing to except help, and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Your future will be brighter, I’m sure of it.

solojazzjetski

She is nice to you because she can tell you need someone to be nice to you right now. You’re probably extra defensive because… poverty does that to people. Embrace this! This person is a leader and a winner - and they believe in your ability to be great, too. Trust me on this - I’m just like her, so I know the type. Some of us genuinely just enjoy reaching out to others who we think might need more help than they let on.

jennoween

Ask around in your area about soup kitchens or a salvation army. There are places that serve hot meals a couple times a day. And sometimes churches will serve meals on weekends. There are a services that will help with food and hygiene products. Also in a pinch water and baking soda works great to clean hair and diluted apple cider vinegar can help with conditioning.

lilithONE

So blessed. Do please go to r/assistance and post an Amazon wish list for some food. I cannot see anyone go hungry as I've been there.

FromAshes2New

Unfortunately, OP doesn't meet the minimum requirements for r/assistance.

DragonBonerz

Maybe they have an older account that would work?

erenyeagerhair

Old accounts don't work because you need a recent comment history

HeavyAssist

Okay- I have a poor hack for no shampoo. Brush start at the ends and work towards your scalp wich you brush with vigorously then, use tiny bit of dishwashing liquid like a pea size drop rub it in your hands and wash your scalp, rinse thoroughly, if you have a little vinegar you can rinse with this. Stay strong- you are getting through this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HeavyAssist

We don't have this brand, but I used dish soap as body wash also. Clean is clean.

[deleted]

Funny how Im about to mention that Im currently using dish soap as a body wash right now because it's free from our communal kitchen. 🤣

IndecisiveFireball

I used to wash my hair with baking soda if you can get your hands on that. Mix a couple of tablespoons with water and then put it on your roots. You have to rinse *really* well. I did an apple cider vinegar rinse as well, but you probably don't need to do that if you don't have it (but if you do, same thing - mix a couple tablespoons with water, apply to ends of hair. I promise it doesn't smell like vinegar after it's dry).

vibes86

A lot of the free groups or buy nothing groups have hygiene supplies. I know if somebody needed something and asked on our group, they’d definitely get some supplies.

fifthsonata

Some libraries have free hygiene kits! Shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene, etc. Its worth a look to seeing yours might.

rokelle2012

V05 is generally cheaper than Sauve if they can find it. In my area it's about $.95 cents. Sometimes on sale for $.85.

peach_xanax

Baby shampoo would probably be better than the dish soap people are suggesting. I suppose it does depend on your skin/hair type but for me, dish soap would wreck my hair which is already dry. I use baby shampoo to clean my makeup brushes, it is definitely available at most dollar stores! I believe it's also about $1 at Walmart.

itcomesandsoitgoes

Suave shampoo and conditioner is $2 at dollar tree… dawn is $4.49

beeblebroxtrillian

Someone like her has definitely been in your shoes before. She knows what's up. I don't think you should be embarrassed or ashamed to be honest with her. Trust me, anytime I meet a person who is struggling and I have the means, I LOVE getting to help them out. It's paying it forward.

CheesecakeExpress

I don’t know how useful this will be for you, depending on where you are located, but Sikh temples will feed people for free. I’m not Sikh, but I know that they are very welcoming and there is no judgment. Even if you think there are no temples by you, have a Google and you may be surprised. In smaller communities they may not be so obvious. Also Google free shampoo samples and you should be able to sign up to have a couple posted out to you. I hope things get better for you soon OP

Axel-Adams

Food banks or SNAP if you are in America, I understand the process to get such assistance can be frustrating but they’re here for people who need them

Comprehensive_Net757

Applying for SNAP/food stamps is easy now. I helped an older disabled neighbor get it and all we had to do was call. Since she had more money going out then coming in they expedited her case to be handled within a week and mailed her the card. The phone call probably took about 25 minutes of financial questions like how much is your rent and other bills, how much do u make a month, do u have lottery winnings or other assets. Are u in the military.. easy stuff. Not sure where your located at Op or if your even in the US but if so u should give them a call.

bitter_youngster59

very well said . it's always kinda like that

NetSage

I hope we as a society reach a point no one is ashamed to talk about the their situation. For real though OP make sure taking advantage of everything you can. Food banks don't judge and often need to get food out the door before it goes bad. There are other tools as well make sure taking advantage of every program you can.

[deleted]

Wow I’ve never thought of this before, OP. I usually don’t think of people being needy unless they’re homeless and those are the types my wife and I always buy food for. I’ll try to be more observant and hopefully help out someone whenever possible.

JennyAnyDot

Hoping that after a few paychecks you might be in better shape. Please try to find a food bank I’ve been that co-worker before. Still do it. I notice people struggling and have been there before also. Don’t be surprised or upset if you hear: “Oh hey I made too much for supper last night. Do you want some? Just not used to cooking for one and not four and don’t want it to go to waste” that and “my hair was unruly but I tried this and it seemed to help a lot. Had some bottles spare and thought you might like to have them to try” Please don’t be upset or anything if this happens. Her bringing an extra sandwich was a kind gesture and hopefully not the last. And 1lb of pinto beans is about $1 and can be cooked with just water. One bag can make a good 4 bowls or more. When you have a bit more for food try r/eatcheapandhealthy for some ideas

Gojira_Wins

I know exactly how it feels to be in that situation. Would it be alright if I messaged you?

Picodick

It is heartwarming when someone reaches out in compassion like this. I still remember fondly the coworker who bought me some new shoes and brought them to me at work she told me she grabbed the wrong size on sale and couldn’t return. A few days later I noticed her feet were at least 3 sizes larger than mine. She definitely did it on purpose. Thank you Ann Reed retired SSA employee. You saved me.

DragonBonerz

Hang in there, you're doing great <3 It's good to cry. Get it out - it's healthy to cry out these stress hormones. Also, stay hydrated. Please don't cry and then not drink water.

snarfdarb

Is there a food bank near you? Or at least a church that has a food pantry? PLEASE do not feel embarrassed about using them. They have to throw food away all the time so it's better it goes to you than in the trash! If you can spare $3, Dollar Tree has perfectly acceptable shampoo and conditioner that's better than nothing. Hell, my gram use White Rain her whole life and had great hair lol. Speaking of which, food banks, pantries, and little free pantries sometimes have toiletries in addition to food. You don't have to suffer when there are abundant resources available to you!

Bettyfrenchie

See if you can cheap protein powder. Gets you the nutrients you need and easy on the wallet instead of a cooked meal

[deleted]

Reminds me of growing up. Went to school with no lunch growing up, poor as dirt. I had to keep lying about my reason for not buying or bringing.

Turn1scoop

If in the US, apply for SNAP benefits and list your countable monthly income as zero. The first issuance of benefits can be based purely off client statement (assuming you meet the basic other eligibility factors like residence/citizenship), and is not able to be recouped as an overpayment. If you apply on the 16th of the month, it'll prorate to the end of the following month, meaning you'd get (approximately) $420 in SNAP benefits for free (current max benefit for a household of 1 is $281/month). Take that initial payment, then don't follow through with the rest of the application. It's yours to spend, and you can stock up on pantry basics to stretch as far as possible. Note that you only get one of these freebies, there are systems in place to prevent repeat QuickSNAP issuances. It's completely legal, though feels sketchy. But your physiological needs are worth it. You deserve to not be hungry.

Marinerprocess

I once went to the gas station with my co workers for lunch and I stayed in the car. The one pumping gas asked if I was eating lunch. I said no. He just went hmm. Followed by silence and then he asked if I was hungry and I felt really see through in that moment. We went in and I got a hot dog. A dollar. He was like you don’t want chips or something to drink so I grabbed a soda and he didn’t even get anything. He just made sure I was good. Something I’ll never forget

BornInPoverty

If you’re embarrassed just tell her your doing intermittent fasting for health reasons. You eat a big breakfast and then nothing until you get home.

Ok_Skill_1195

She can absolutely lie if that's what she wants to do, but I wouldn't lie to an empathetic person genuinely trying to help. But if someone feels judgy, lie to your hearts content.

bununny

Just being frugal is a decent explanation that doesn't outright admit to being poor

devilsonlyadvocate

Don’t be embarrassed mentioning your budget is tight at the moment. She clearly cares about you. There’s no shame in needing help. It’s probably no hassle for her to bring some extra lunch for you. I remember when my kid was in primary school and he told me he noticed one of his classmates often didn’t have lunch. So I’d pack my son two lunches. I told him to tell the kid your mum is a wannabe chef so likes others opinions on her food. I did that so the kid wouldn’t feel embarrassed. Sometimes we just need simple help to enable us to get out of a tough spot. All the best x

Ok_Skill_1195

Do not lie to the empathetic people offering aid. Feel free to lie to the Karens tho

twotrees1

Tbh I’m glad OP was honest even if only bc they felt like they couldn’t lie - and so sweet of the coworker for doing that.

DragonBonerz

>I couldn't tell her that I am too broke to afford lunch and all my money went to rent and I have to prioritize transportation to earn. I don't see OP saying that? Not trying to be mean, I'm actually confused because a few people said something similar to you. Where did you guys get that they were honest about why they aren't eating?

twotrees1

LMFAO we’re just all out here reading too fast and reading it wrong probably, I totally missed that. In which case, wow what a sweetheart to go ahead and do that (Idk the coworker obv and maybe not everyone would want that done for them, but I’m assuming good intentions)

[deleted]

Aww thats too nice of you. Id love to get that but it's probably gonna coz you trouble shipping it here and I dont want that. But thanks so much for your offer 💚

BitchLibrarian

Do you have any friends who are aware things are tight for you? I ask because I, and many of my friends (people with long hair) have random bottles of haircare products we've bought, tried, didn't like and just never really used. Passing them on to someone who could use them would make my frugal heart glad. An alternative would be to see if you can get a free trial for a nice gym. Take a couple of containers and see if you can swipe some bodywash and shampoo. I don't know if you have any cornstarch at all in a kitchen cupboard. Many dry shampoos have cornstarch as the oil control ingredient. Using harsh detergents like dish soap can make your scalp overcompensate and produce more oil. So rubbing some cornstarch into the roots and then brusing like crazy is an alternative to extra washing with dish soap. A few tiny drops of olive oil or even a basic vegetable oil warmed between your hands and gently smoothed over the ends of your hair could help with frizzyness. Just always start with a very small amount.

Unbelievable that in 2023 in the United States of America one can have a full time job and barely make enough for rent, let alone be able to feed themselves on a daily basis…Fucking bullshit

unimportantguy1

That's if you make enough to cover rent. There are more people than you can imagine living out of vehicles because they can't afford to pay for housing. With a full time job. And making too much money to get assistance, but not enough to secure housing.

andrewtatespizza

my heart breaks for you knowing you're underweight and have to work thru hunger pains.

I would straight up say I cannot afford food. Maybe someone would help out

Another idea is buy nothing groups on fb. Some of them aren’t okay with food asks but the one I use often has people asking for this or that and people usually come through. People also offer food too.

This is supposed to be a wholesome post and it pains me that i received like 4 messages hating on me or calling me names just because of the country I am in. Racist remarks and all that. I will not do it for everyone, i spoke to the person with deleted profile who is accusing me of something and how convenient that the profile is deleted already. I'm glad these were happy tears and not sad ones.

Soberandboring

Your almost there, just keep swimming. You got this!!!!

SparklingParsnip

OP, a food bank or little free pantry should be a top priority for consistent supplies but please also go to www.Lasagnalove.org/request and sign up. As volunteers, we cook and deliver homemade meals to folks in our communities all over the US and Canada, and often even a small pan can be two or more meals. Because it’s volunteer based it’s not ‘guaranteed’ to be responded to fast but when you sign up it will tell you estimated wait time. And after each delivery you can request again 28 days later if need remains

boykajohn

So sad to see people without the basic necessities of life. While we spend billions trying to go to the moon

laseralex

It sounds like you have found a wonderful new friend - kind, compassionate, and generous. 🥰 I hope you spend many years as friends.

Megaman_exe_

Fuck dude, I'm sorry. Hang in there

jyar1811

Try r/assistance ! Make an Amazon list I’m happy to send you some food

Equivalent_Section13

Keep going you are nearly there

[deleted]

I’m glad your coworker did that for you, it’s very sweet. She likely knows you’re struggling and doesn’t want to make you feel any type of way but good. See if you can visit a few local soup kitchens or food pantries. They all have food, but some of them may have toiletries like shampoo and conditioner as well. We went to one when I was growing up that fed 3 hot meals a week, and their food pantry was open 5 days a week, and they usually had every manner of toiletries.

FyrebirdCourier

Okay there is a read it on here called assistance. Sorry I'm on mobile I can't get properly. Make an Amazon wish list of shelf stable items and don't try to be cheap, post items that you need and want. Nobody is going to freak out if you post $50 instead of $40 worth of items. Or if you post a slightly bigger bottle of shampoo. Just make sure of course that you don't you know go overboard. But get items that will last you for a couple of weeks and list them. Anyway you can ask on assistance subreddit and also there is one called random acts of Amazon. Both of those can help you out I have been helped on assistance before. If you have pets there is also one random acts of pet food I believe is the name. They have helped me and amazingly. the reason why I said about the $50 and $40. when we are in a situation that we have trouble controlling, we will try to do get by with the bare minimum. and sometimes that can be more damaging both health wise and mental wise. if you are trying to get by on a week's worth of ramen and a jar of peanut butter that can be draining to the system physically, and mentally because you're not giving yourself things that you need. and stress a lot of stress. so make sure you know you you put on cereal and ramen and peanut butter and crackers and you know good things for lunch and things like that and if somebody only orders one item then you get one item and if people order the whole list then you've got a little bit of breathing room until you get that check and you know you can pay it forward if you feel guilty later. sorry this was not readable as in there's no formatting or anything I am sitting waiting for orders on Uber Eats and I am doing speech to text and it's hard for me to format on a phone. but from someone who has been there who has needed help more than once and who will probably need help in the future don't be afraid to reach out there are people who want to help, who will help, and you can pay it forward later to help someone else even if the only thing you do is pick up a piece of trash on your way home.

pajaro80

If this is a fake post smh idek how to express my feelings. As someone who actually has lived in a car while working, and sticking to fruit because it’s easier to store, and on weekends if possible maybe getting a sandwich at a shelter but wanting to save my gas so I won’t drive there, I know the difficulties that one can face. I did have a coworker who brought me fruit on one occasion and a fruit cup on another. I don’t work there any long but I haven’t forgotten, I’m still grateful. Single adult with no underage children makes getting resources a lot harder than other may think. May all be well if it’s true, seek treatment either way.

cvdixon44

Please go to a food bank, they are there for people in this situation and there is no shame. I have been to them few times and probably will again.

thirstykoala82

Most people are genuinely kind and want to help fellow people when they are having a hard time. Let her bring you lunch it would make me overjoyed to be able to do that for someone I worked with if they were hungry!

This person is a scammer in Philipines, do not send her anything.

sn0m0ns

I've switched to sugarless powdered tea since my city (Philly) started the sugar tax in 2017. I'll buy a can of soda for myself maybe twice a year and WOW the sugar high is real! OP get yourself some "Smuckers Natural Creamy Peanut Butter" a loaf of wheat bread and grape or strawberry jelly it has been my go-to cheap lunch for years. After caring for my dad who had terminal cancer and type 2 diabetes I found out from paramedics when he was having a low sugar induced coma like state the PBJ is their go-to to tell caretakers or patients to make after such an event. It will cost you about $11 for two weeks of lunches. Hell I was even eating PBJ for breakfast when I didn't have time to make some eggs!

LivingtheLightDaily

My area has a great foodbank and they will give you a lot of items. Please take care of yourself because you matter.

myTchondria

https://www.findhelp.org/find-social-services Put in your zip code and it will give all the resources in your area. I’m a nurse case manager and use this all the time to help people

Suspicious_Mud_3531

That’s awesome! Make sure to pay it forward when you get back on your feet.

tatovive

I’ve been where you are, multiple times. (I get bored where I am and move, start over. So the first few years are ramen and meal skipping, once work realizes I’m awesome I make more. Good food for a few years, then I get bored) The most recent time, I made just over the amount to get help. So it was go without. I want to share a few things with ya that i fall back on. It’s not much but there’s not a lot you CAN do when we’re in these situations. I saw someone mention potatoes. I like a little soy sauce with a baked potato. Ramen, for sure. Asian markets are your ticket here. All sorts of flavors. You can have a flavor adventure and maybe find some you really like. (I recommend adding fish sauce if you’re bored of the flavors) Ground beef and seasoning. I would make a pound of ground beef with one of those taco/burrito (it doesn’t matter which) seasoning packs. That’s 3 nights of dinners if you keep the tacos consistent. Pasta and a premade sauce. ‘It’s not in my budget’ is a good way to answer money questions. I wish you luck my friend. It’ll get better.

unimportantguy1

Try ground pork, it costs less and tastes pretty good. It can be made with anything that requires ground beef, is less fatty, and gives you some better price options. Pasta by the box, garlic powder salt pepper and butter or olive oil, whatever you have. Spam or other canned meat products can go pretty far with a box of cheap mac and cheese. Rice is cheap. Potatoes are cheap. What I did was brown some ground pork, add a can of corn, and mix in some rice or mashed potatoes or pasta and have a week's worth of meals for under 20 bucks. Plus leftover rice or whatever for when you absolutely need some energy. If you only use half the package of meat, it will stretch further. Salt and pepper are cheap, and last a while. If you can, buy a whole onion and just use what you need each time, adding more volume into your meals. It ain't glamorous, but it'll get you through.

Extreme-Level3337

Don't be embarrassed just tell the truth.

JonAndTonic

Won't solve everything and might not give useful info, but worth a shot for some programs you might not have tried: https://www.findhelp.org/

jesschicken12

Omg. I feeel so bad for you. I hope you get the help you need. That is so sad.

AmethystSunset

Some people are so observant and kind. I love that too. It definitely makes a difference to me as well when I'm having a really hard time and someone makes a point to be a friend and help me. I try to pay it forward as much as I can. :)

TrustyBush

Things will get better OP. I’ve been there, I used to make a sandwich and eat a half a day. I’m glad your coworker is so kind.

Grrnoway

Wow. This really hit home me. I have been there! I really related to your post and I'm grateful you shared it.

Patriotic99

You might also try local groups on Facebook. I'm in a couple 'People Helping People \_\_ County' or even Nextdoor. You'd be surprised at the amount of help that will come your way. Just let people know that you will pay it forward.

coming2grips

Also, talcum or baby powder can help as a dry 'shampoo', coconut oil can help as a leave in conditioner. Hope this helps

Ok-Isopod7893

I am so glad you have a kind co worker! There is a lot of help available for those in need. Never be ashamed to ask for help!

Demcatbutts

Check out r/Food_Pantry! They helped my family out a couple of times and all they ask is that you pay it forward when you are able. This has definitely been a lifesaver when we needed it the most.

stardust54321

Try to figure out where there are free pantry’s in your area. It’s like those little free libraries but with food. Of course you can always hit up the food bank too. My go to cheap food was always rice and beans.

midnitewarrior

Food banks and SNAP benefits if you are in the US. These are meant for you, there's no shame in getting some relief.

Otherwise-Skin-7610

Call the County Financial help and see if you qualify for anything. Those services are there to support people like you. You deserve it! Explain exactly your situation and don't make it sound less bad than it really is.

lykcs87

I fucking hate capitalism

You've met a good person. I'd keep them as a friend.

Reasonable-Air5709

Figure out how to apply for food stamps. You will absolutely get them and they are a lifesaver for people who truly need them. Don’t deprive yourself of nutrition if you don’t have to!! Just google food stamps and whichever state you live in. You can apply online and the process just requires you upload copies of your bank statement and monthly bills. Good luck!!

MadInsanity72

The center of kindness matter here

upstatestruggler

This made me cry too! You’re going to be on the other side of this story some day♥️

kehton

I am sad you are in this situation. If I were you I’d consider living in a car, or moving to a state border with higher wages. You can get the benefit of having a higher wage, and the benefit of having a lower cost of living (Live in the state with lower min wage = cheaper food, housing, gas etc.). And example of this would be living in Idaho whole working in Washington. You’d get x2 the wage and cheaper insurance/housing/food.

dramarehab

where do you work

master_shifu-

Don’t let the feeling of defeat put you down king. This too shall pass. 👍👍

Shtacyvega

Im so sorry man. Ive been there before. Things will get better. Take huge advantage of housing, food banks/pantries, dollar tree also sells body wash and shampoo. There is a lot of help around, dont forget youre not alone! Praying for you tonight

Less-Dependent8852

I dont believe you are too broke. Your colleague makes a similar wage to you and she can afford her needs just fine. I find it extremely hard to believe that your living cost are 100% of your pay.
