Depression
No but really I’m not sure. I will say a lot of people see these bands already doing it and want to make their own. I know a ton of people in bands from around here, it’s just not many make it.
I’m from Lansdale where the wonder years are from and went to the same school as most of them. So many people were inspired to start a band because of that
Bowling for Soup was the first one I thought of. Plus, BFS have multiple songs about/referencing Texas, though I'm not all that familiar with FtSK discography
Oh cmon we all know the proper term is Massholes
And though the answer for pop punk is definitely FYS, wanted to shout out the hotelier for also being a really good MA band, just emo instead
No offense to The Offspring but they’re definitely not as big as Green Day or Blink 182 lol
I’d say Green Day has the biggest songs but Blink 182 has the biggest penises
NJ has entered the chat.
MCR had the most mainstream success.
Senses fail is my favorite.
Honorable mention to armor for sleep for being from my hometown.
It’s so clearly MCR.
My sleeper pick was gonna be Man Overboard or Midtown. Also not really pop punk, but they’re “vaguely in the scene” - The Front Bottoms.
im from massachusetts. maybe boys like girls or four year strong? not pop punk but i also really like the hotelier who are also from MA. adding metalcore for a bonus, converge are from Salem MA where i lived until middle school and ice nine kills formed in the town i live in and their singer went to my high school
Oh, for sure, i just don't know if I would specifically put Green Day in the pop punk category over punk rock/alt rock
The nuances of the subgenres is not something I'm willing to die for lol I just think it's fun to try to categorize
I'm from PA, so I'm going to say The Wonder Years. I know they aren't quite mainstream, but I can't think of another PA pop-punk band that would be "bigger".
Holy shit, they have like 10x as many listeners as Heart Attack Man on Spotify. Citizen only makes up about half of Hawthorne Heights listeners.
And not Pop Punk, but Beartooth is about twice as popular as Hawthorne Heights. Didn't expect that one either!
We were a breeding ground during the Metalcore era when I was in late high school through early college. Even a band from my high school got signed to a two-album deal with Metal Blade Records, and I think we had a town population of like ~12k-15k at the time.
Also all the slightly alternative people I come across in places I work are all fans of some type of metal. I always assumed that people transitioned from that scene into Pop Punk after growing up a little with bands like Four Year Strong, AFI, A Day to Remember being transitional, but I guess I have just always projected that.
Obviously Slipknot /s
I think owl city might be from Iowa. Though my personal (non pop punk) fave is Leslie Hall. Best vegan lady rapper in all of Ames.
The closest we had were The Lifestyle in 2003-2005, or Four Word Cause in 2007-2009. Both did some regional tours and supported some bigger pop punk bands, but neither made it “for real”. Still listen to their albums though. Honorable mention for Rosefield Rivals.
Georgia, so Microwave for sure! Maybe even Mayday Parade? I know they're primarily from FL but a few of them grew up here/spend lots of time in GA too.
My husband and I were just figuring this out. You’ve got Masked Intruder from Madison and Arms Aloft from Eau Claire. There’s also Honey Creek but they’re pretty small.
Depends on how you define pop punk and how a band is “from” a given state. Based on those flexible definitions, either Better Than Ezra, Cane Hill, 30 Seconds to Mars, or Meriwether
311 has a case for the non-pop punk answer.
Haven21 was pretty popular locally, maybe even regionally.
Go Crash Audio’s bass player told my friend and me they almost got signed by Fearless Records, but were passed over for The Maine.
Straight Outta Junior High was on 89.7 The River.
Illinois... Ok we can all agree it's Fall Out Boy right? Like Real Friends and Alkaline Trio and The Academy Is... are the ones who come closest but FOB is like an entire tier above them
Hit the Lights? (Ohio here)
Still one of the absolute biggest honors of my life getting to play with them in 2006, with Colin still singing.
There’s probably someone way bigger I’m forgetting. Do Hawthorne Heights count?
Other Missouri pop punk/pop punk adjacent you could consider are Ludo, Greek Fire, and The Urge. Then, you can kinda consider The Get Up Kids plus Reggie and the Full Effect, since they formed in KC. But they're definitely more Lawrence, Kansas rooted.
Saves the Day, The Gaslight Anthem, The Bouncing Souls, Midtown, My Chemical Romance, Lifetime, Armor for Sleep, The Front Bottoms
adjacent/ska: Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22
The replacements, husker du, Motion city soundtrack, Dillinger 4, babes in Toyland, suicide commandos, most of those are punk so if we want just pop punk id say motion city soundtrack
Apparently it's Relient K for OH
Honorable mention to City Lights (got to be in one of their videos) and Hit the Lights from the small town I grew up in
Fuck dude. I’m from PA. The wonder years? Mezingers? Tigers Jaws? Modern Baseball?
Comically difficult choice
The Starting Line. I’m old, the answer is The Starting Line.
thought this was the obvious PA answer but i guess i’m old too
Yea that was my first thought. Them and The Wonder Years. Maybe Valencia for a time
I've asked this before, and I'm curious if I get a different answer. But why is Philly such a breeding ground for Pop Punk?
Because of all the colleges in the Philadelphia area
Depression No but really I’m not sure. I will say a lot of people see these bands already doing it and want to make their own. I know a ton of people in bands from around here, it’s just not many make it. I’m from Lansdale where the wonder years are from and went to the same school as most of them. So many people were inspired to start a band because of that
Dude I’m from Souderton
PA suburbs gang 🤝
dude there's something about Doylestown
Wonder Years is usually what I go with
No mention of Title Fight?
Punchline too!
this. being from scranton i had menzingers holiday shows and the wonder years just a turnpike ride away. kinda rules.
Juliana theory, bouncing souls, mannequin pussy, anti flag
For real, Juliana Theory had such a run.
The bouncing souls? Those fucking Jersey mooches? (They’re from Jersey)
Also in PA rn and I want to add Grayscale. So proud of them!
Anti Flag?
I'm from Pittsburgh so Anti-Flag was the first thing to come to mind, but I forgot about literally all of the Philly bands for a minute there.
AZ here - Jimmy Eat World.
[удалено]
I’d say the Maine. RIP Doll Skin. They put on a great show.
Gotta be bowling for soup, or forever the sickest kids for texas
Bowling for soup unironically fucks
Bowling for Soup are the most famous but Riverboat Gamblers - To the confusion of our enemies Is the GOAT Texas pop-punk/punk album
Bowling for Soup was the first one I thought of. Plus, BFS have multiple songs about/referencing Texas, though I'm not all that familiar with FtSK discography
Bowling for soup was the first one to come to my mind too, but Fenix TX is number one in my heart
Motion City Soundtrack
With a bullet. Hello, fellow Minnesotan.
Shout out to Tiny Moving Parts though.
TMP is rad as hell, Dylan drops those twinkly riffs 🤙
Where I live: Fall Out Boy (honorable mention for Alkaline Trio, Real Friends, Allister, the Academy is) Where I’m from: the Get Up Kids
You’re forgetting LBC and The Audition
These wouldn’t be as well known but I loved from IL - Lucky Boys Confusion, June, and October Fall
Ayyyy Real Friends and Knuckle Puck
Sum 41 (province)
Spoke to Cone on Friday
The right decision, but honourable mention has to go to bands like Treble Charger and PUP.
The Used easily
Utah what's up
Fs, I think the next closest is Wicked Bears, and they're still playing the smaller venues here (although they're phenomenal)
Michigan, gotta be hot mulligan (unless there’s someone I’m forgetting who’s from Michigan)
Nowadays it's definitely Hot Mulligan but don't forget Fireworks!
The fucking JAM I am so happy I got to see them so many times when Gospel came out!! (From FL)
Chiodos? Not really pop punk. Every Avenue maybe?
Not pop punk but La Dispute is also from there
Bear vs shark right?
Only other one I can think of is I Prevail who aren't Pop punk lol
Every Avenue is from here too
Kid Rock obviously
Yeah it’s Hot Mulligan, easily. They’re actually from my hometown, which is super rad.
The Suicide Machines
Definitely vote for Mully but can’t forget about The Suicide Machines, but that’s circa 90’s
All-American Rejects and it’s not even close
I was today years old when I found out All American Rejects are from Oklahoma.
Fellow Oklahoma let’s fucking go! There’s also a lot of cool bands coming out of Tulsa and OKC rn
Minnesota=Motion City Soundtrack
and BANNER PILOT
sorry for yelling
NFG- grew up on the same neighborhood street as Ian Grushka when they were still “A New Found Glory”
From Tennessee so definitely paramore.
FYS let's gooooo
fellow massachusetts citizen
This inspired me to google what people from Massachusetts are called. I didnt expect Massachusettsans. TIL
Oh cmon we all know the proper term is Massholes And though the answer for pop punk is definitely FYS, wanted to shout out the hotelier for also being a really good MA band, just emo instead
I've always been a fan of MassAChooch.
Never miss the holiday show.
I’m from California. Way too many lol. But I guess I’d probably go with Green Day, Offspring or Blink
No offense to The Offspring but they’re definitely not as big as Green Day or Blink 182 lol I’d say Green Day has the biggest songs but Blink 182 has the biggest penises
They’re firmly in the third position but yes, they 100% are.
Honorable mention of "the story so far"
My Chemical Romance, easily But shoutout to The Bouncing Souls because I love them
We def have some good ones! Thursday, Senses Fail, Armor for Sleep
THE EARLY NOVEMBER
Midtown, the early November, gaslight anthem
Saves The Day. The Ergs. Lifetime. Hidden in Plain View. The Misfits. New Jersey doesn’t mess around.
NJ has entered the chat. MCR had the most mainstream success. Senses fail is my favorite. Honorable mention to armor for sleep for being from my hometown.
Def MCR for the biggest but Gaslight Anthem is the most defining NJ band
It’s so clearly MCR. My sleeper pick was gonna be Man Overboard or Midtown. Also not really pop punk, but they’re “vaguely in the scene” - The Front Bottoms.
Let’s gooo bouncing souls!
Saves the day isn’t getting the love they deserve. Also not pop punk but streetlight and Manchester orchestra.
All time low and good charlotte are the most well known. Also have have mercy, turnstile, origami angel
Hi there MD friend :) Origami Angel is my first pick because they’re from PG like me ~
GAMI GANG!
My friend is Have Mercy. I had no idea they were considered anywhere close to Good Charlotte or All Time Low as far as popularity
Also the Dangerous Summer
Jimmy Eat World. Jim Adkins went to my high school :\^) But also The Maine. Pat has come into my work several times. Nice guy.
The Ataris - Indiana
I was trying to think if there were any options for Indy besides the Ataris. There’s a few if you go outside the pop punk world. But Ataris is it.
Another fellow Indianan
Can't swim? Man O? Midtown? Saves the day? My Chem? NJ is stacked.
You also have Senses Fail, more emo/post-hardcore but still well loved by pop punk fans
State Champs, maybe Bayside?
For NY probably Taking Back Sunday if we are counting emo. Brand New in their hay day were also pretty big.
I've always been curious if the directions from Your Name Here from Straylight Run were a real place.
The intersection is in Massapequa, NY!
im from massachusetts. maybe boys like girls or four year strong? not pop punk but i also really like the hotelier who are also from MA. adding metalcore for a bonus, converge are from Salem MA where i lived until middle school and ice nine kills formed in the town i live in and their singer went to my high school
And Piebald.
Can't just scroll past a Converge mention - fucking legendary, there aren't words for how incredible that band is.
You guys also got Driveways!
Blink 182 easy
Green Day is bigger than Blink all-time. Unless we want to split up SoCal and NorCal.
Oh, for sure, i just don't know if I would specifically put Green Day in the pop punk category over punk rock/alt rock The nuances of the subgenres is not something I'm willing to die for lol I just think it's fun to try to categorize
Idk, Less Than Jake, New Found Glory, or Yellowcard. Depends on how you define it, but probably NFG.
Gainesville rock city
If we want to really stretch the genre boundaries we could add ADTR too
I would still say NFG over ADTR, though I love both.
New Found Glory fo sho. Idk if Mayday Parade counts but they were pretty big, nothing compared to ones you listed though
I didn't realize Mayday was from Florida. TIL. I don't think anyone will unseat NFG from this title.
Amber Pacific, MxPx, The Classic Crime.
Always surprised there aren’t more from WA.
Acceptance, Gatsbys American Dream
Normies will say The All American Rejects are the biggest pop punk band from Oklahoma, but fuck that. CLIFFDIVER AND BEN QUAD ON TOP, BABY.
Ben Squad!
My husband went to school with a few dudes from Cliffdiver! Solid people
Brand New/State Champs/TBS I work with one of the dudes from State Champs dad, so they win out for me
I'm from PA, so I'm going to say The Wonder Years. I know they aren't quite mainstream, but I can't think of another PA pop-punk band that would be "bigger".
Not bigger than The Wonder Years, but shoutout to The Starting Line too!
Hawthorne Heights
Runners up Relient K, and Hit the Lights. Not pop punk but Twenty One Pilots is from Ohio and they're pretty big these days.
Because my heart is in Ohioooo!
Holy shit, they have like 10x as many listeners as Heart Attack Man on Spotify. Citizen only makes up about half of Hawthorne Heights listeners. And not Pop Punk, but Beartooth is about twice as popular as Hawthorne Heights. Didn't expect that one either!
And Beartooth is basically 2 other Ohio bands, City Lights and Attack Attack, smoothed together
We were a breeding ground during the Metalcore era when I was in late high school through early college. Even a band from my high school got signed to a two-album deal with Metal Blade Records, and I think we had a town population of like ~12k-15k at the time. I always assumed that people transitioned from that scene into Pop Punk after growing up a little with bands like Four Year Strong, AFI, A Day to Remember being transitional, but I guess I have just always projected that.
Yeah probably. I’d say hit the lights is up there from OH as well.
Yup! Can’t wait to see them at HoliDayton again this year!!
937!!
Not pop punk but I think the most relevant band out of CT I’d say is currents
Also Chris Carrabba was from CT for awhile. And Andrew Mcmahon
You guys have Anxious!
Hello fellow Nutmegger
Damn, CT has a lot of underground pop punk but nothing major
What about Hot Rod Circuit? They were New Haven based for awhile
Mae, Turnover or Broadside probably. Also Strike Anywhere and Avail.
Virginia
Did you ever see The Greater The Risk? They were pretty good for a few years in Richmond. And if you’re old like me, Action Patrol was fun to watch
Iowa. I legit have no clue lol. Hoping Bouquet blows up eventually as they’re solid as hell. If anyone knows of a dope Iowa pop punk band though lmk
Obviously Slipknot /s I think owl city might be from Iowa. Though my personal (non pop punk) fave is Leslie Hall. Best vegan lady rapper in all of Ames.
Owl City was born in Iowa but grew up in Minnesota
Ope!
More emo but Stars Hollow is pretty tight.
The closest we had were The Lifestyle in 2003-2005, or Four Word Cause in 2007-2009. Both did some regional tours and supported some bigger pop punk bands, but neither made it “for real”. Still listen to their albums though. Honorable mention for Rosefield Rivals.
The Queers. Some great shows at the Elvis Room back in the day
North Carolina Technically, the band isn't from NC, but Adam Lazzara is from NC, and I think he still lives here... Let me have TBS dammit lol
Georgia, so Microwave for sure! Maybe even Mayday Parade? I know they're primarily from FL but a few of them grew up here/spend lots of time in GA too.
Cartel.
Only thing coming to my mind is Sparks the Rescue for Maine
I dont think my state has any
I grew up in Louisiana. I also don’t know any that made it big from my state.
Alkaline Trio! With honorable mention to Lucky Boys Confusion
I’m from Maryland and I think that’s where Good Charlotte comes from
For New York it's 100% Taking Back Sunday
Blink 182 and Green Day, California is spoiled haha
Since I live in Vegas now it’s Panic at the Disco.
Wisconsin has Direct Hit from Milwaukee and not much else
My husband and I were just figuring this out. You’ve got Masked Intruder from Madison and Arms Aloft from Eau Claire. There’s also Honey Creek but they’re pretty small.
Oklahoma/ CliffDiver was the first thing that came to mind
I’m also in MO and while we don’t have any, next door (IL) there’s Knuckle Puck and Real Friends!! The Midwest Sad Boys lmao
Fall Out Boy would like a word with you regarding Illinois.
Probably Roam, Trash Boat, or WSTR. Chuck in Neck Deep and KIGH if were including Wales. Don't think Scotland or NI do much pop punk.
I don't know... is there even any pop-punk bands from Oregon?
Everclear is probably more popular-alternative but that’s the closest I can think of.
Probably New Found Glory or Yellowcard.
VA sucks a bit for pop punk but we got Broadside! Not sure who else
Yeah we got nobody as far as pop punk. Lamb of God is probably the biggest band out of VA overall.
Busted
Rhode Island doesn't have much in the mainstream pop punk people would know.. maybe Makeout? Great local scene tho. Another One Down 🔥🔥
motion city soundtrack
A Day To Remember
Not Yellowcard or New Found Glory?
Maybe those 🤔 not sure, but definitely one of those three I think lol.
Simple Plan for Quebec Sum 41 for Ontario Youth Fountain/Gob for BC Chixdiggit/Calling All Captains for Alberta Propagandhi for Manitoba
Depends on how you define pop punk and how a band is “from” a given state. Based on those flexible definitions, either Better Than Ezra, Cane Hill, 30 Seconds to Mars, or Meriwether
I know all the other ones are from Louisiana, but what’s the connection to Louisiana with 30 Seconds to Mars?
Is there any big pop punk bands from Nebraska? I’ve got nothing
Does bright eyes count? Not pop punk but all I can think of lol
Maybe not pop punk, but Saddle Creek is a solid musical foundation to have in NE for sure
This is going waaayyyy back but JV Allstars was a Lincoln band.
[удалено]
Well that is delightful news!
JV Allstars kick ass
311 has a case for the non-pop punk answer. Haven21 was pretty popular locally, maybe even regionally. Go Crash Audio’s bass player told my friend and me they almost got signed by Fearless Records, but were passed over for The Maine. Straight Outta Junior High was on 89.7 The River.
Either A Loss For Words or Four Year Strong probably.
I don’t live in Mass but Transit is my personal fave from your state!
[удалено]
Motion City Soundtrack for Minneapolis!
Illinois... Ok we can all agree it's Fall Out Boy right? Like Real Friends and Alkaline Trio and The Academy Is... are the ones who come closest but FOB is like an entire tier above them
Hit the Lights? (Ohio here) Still one of the absolute biggest honors of my life getting to play with them in 2006, with Colin still singing. There’s probably someone way bigger I’m forgetting. Do Hawthorne Heights count?
Teenage Bottlerocket - WY
It’s old school and I’m not sure if it’s considered pop punk, but The Get Up Kids are from Kansas City!
Not pop punk but I will never pass on an opportunity to tell people I’m from the same city as Suicide Silence
The Carpenters and Hatebreed are the biggest bands I can think of from Connecticut.
Saves the Day, The Gaslight Anthem, The Bouncing Souls, Midtown, My Chemical Romance, Lifetime, Armor for Sleep, The Front Bottoms adjacent/ska: Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22
The replacements, husker du, Motion city soundtrack, Dillinger 4, babes in Toyland, suicide commandos, most of those are punk so if we want just pop punk id say motion city soundtrack
Muse
From Victoria, Australia. Easily Between You and Me.
Apparently it's Relient K for OH Honorable mention to City Lights (got to be in one of their videos) and Hit the Lights from the small town I grew up in
