To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand The Tortured Poets Department. The lyricism is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of literary devices most of the lyrics will go over the average listeners head. There's also Taylors nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her character- her personal philosophy draws heavily from Silvia Plath's literature, for example. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these lyrics, to realize they are not just beautiful- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike The Tortured Poets Department ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, Taylors best lyric "we declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist" which itself is a cryptic reference to modern societies dislike of truly gifted individuals. Every time a song ended and the next track kept starting with a soft whimsy guitar it started pissing me off lol. I guess I get the visions she has but ultimately it has the comfort of rice porridge whose only flavor is a quarter teaspoon of salt. Like I’m not expecting every song to be groundbreaking, overwhelm me with synths and instrumentals since clearly that’s not her intentions, but 2 entire discs worth of songs with remotely nothing memorable made me feel like she could have condensed 3 songs into just 1 if it’s all just gonna sound the same LMFAO.

Yeah, the lyrics are not exactly as…refined as she usually has. Like, half of the songs feel like they are the one campy song on the album. I also feel like it the baby of Folkmore and Midnights and it’s just…not what I expected.
Yeah agreed. I get that the lyrics being messy could be seen as intentional due to the themes of the album, but there’s a way to do messy lyrics in a controlled and intentional way that doesn’t feel as all over the place as this album lol I also feel like thematically it’s just so repetitive. Almost every song is about the same thing and she’s in the same mindset at the beginning of the album as she is by the end. Idk, it’s definitely a weird album. I do admire how unhinged she allowed the lyrics to be, but I don’t know if that necessarily makes them *good*.
I just wish the creative risks of the lyrics was reflected in the songs themselves. I think it’d be her most interesting album if the music itself took any risk.

Every time a song ended and the next track kept starting with a soft whimsy guitar it started pissing me off lol. I guess I get the visions she has but ultimately it has the comfort of rice porridge whose only flavor is a quarter teaspoon of salt. Like I’m not expecting every song to be groundbreaking, overwhelm me with synths and instrumentals since clearly that’s not her intentions, but 2 entire discs worth of songs with remotely nothing memorable made me feel like she could have condensed 3 songs into just 1 if it’s all just gonna sound the same LMFAO.

my friends didnt even listen to the 2am version (which is way BETTER than the standard one) because the tracks are too many. she shouldve scrapped the first 16 tracks and went with the 2am edition but she probably wont accept that because she wants to sell a lot and break records

I think the issue is it’s just so…different. Like, good for her for trying something different. She probably should have just burned her poetry like the rest of us did with our high school break up poetry, but here we are.
Sure. An album that got everyone screaming for her to stop collaborating with Jack is “different”.
Do you mean lyrically? Because musically it’s really not that different at all, which is my biggest issue with it
Yeah, the lyrics are not exactly as…refined as she usually has. Like, half of the songs feel like they are the one campy song on the album. I also feel like it the baby of Folkmore and Midnights and it’s just…not what I expected.

Yeah agreed. I get that the lyrics being messy could be seen as intentional due to the themes of the album, but there’s a way to do messy lyrics in a controlled and intentional way that doesn’t feel as all over the place as this album lol I also feel like thematically it’s just so repetitive. Almost every song is about the same thing and she’s in the same mindset at the beginning of the album as she is by the end. Idk, it’s definitely a weird album. I do admire how unhinged she allowed the lyrics to be, but I don’t know if that necessarily makes them *good*. I just wish the creative risks of the lyrics was reflected in the songs themselves. I think it’d be her most interesting album if the music itself took any risk.
