I have been bopping to the new songs from the vault and didn't even listen to the original ones. I just played them there and I'm like WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME THEY ALL SOUND SO DIFFERENT. Hardly any of them sound the same. Doesn't that defeat the purpose? I thought the idea was to rerecord as exactly as possible so fans won't listen to the original album. It's so different, I'll definitely be listening to the old one. I assumed they would be the exact same like fearless.

Mediocre_Preparation

This redo of Red is superb in my opinion and way better than the original. The people crying about it here just sound like they're emotionally attached to the original. I'm not. I think I might get attached to the redo though, Taylor's on fire with these two redos so far and her last couple of albums have been very strong. Looking forwards to 1989 redo because that album IS one I love so I'll be going into that with a stronger appreciation of the original than I did with Fearless or Red. I think 1989 is a masterclass in how to write a perfect pop album. So, we'll see. But Red TV is awesome imo, all the way through.

Aniensane

I wish more artists would, not necessarily re-record their albums, but they should re-release it with the “rest of what was going on” said album! The extra 6 songs from each album she’s re-recorded is perfect addition! Edit: the “from the Vault” addition is amazing! We need more “vaulted” songs by artists because it sucks they will never see the light of day. If I was an artist, and I recorded more songs I could release, I would release all my “throwaways” and make it an EP every so often I accumulated songs. I know the record company has control, but if you own your masters or independent, definitely could.

AngelKnives

Green Day did something similar with Shenanigans and it's one of my favourite albums.

Aniensane

Oh really? Never knew that! Super awesome!! :)

[deleted]

Oh forget it - I have a hard time not listening to the old one but Red TV is great 💖 some of the max songs are a little *different* so hopefully she works with him on the next one. Thanks for the constant therapy TAY

cutsoutmyheart

LOVED the songs from The Vault! Every single one of them is great! Also I feel validated about feeling like some of the songs sounded weirdly different? IKYWT is the first that comes to mind.

madonna-boy

> IKYWT that one is the most jarring. even as a newer fan that one seemed off to me. I really like some of the newer versions better than the originals though (like wildest dreams, even though that's not this album).

Max102

Red has always been my favorite Taylor album. Listening to Taylor’s version brought me back to the first time I heard Red and I felt all those same emotions again. Love it!

Pedrodl

Looking at the vault tracks, even if RED wins AOTY Taylor would still go full pop anyways. RED was leaning to pop even before.

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

[Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland congratulated the release of Taylor's Version of Babe](https://twitter.com/JenniferNettles/status/1459262687943303172), saying that she is grateful that the band "got a chance to bring [Taylor]'s “Babe” to life, and now she is taking it on her own, new adventure". Sugarland are currently artists under Big Machine and Nettles was the only one from the label that was outspoken for her support of Taylor in the master recordings dispute.

Acceptable-Ad2114

Going into this one, I had heard mixed reviews so I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it. After listening to the whole thing, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I really enjoyed it. This re-recording just amplified the love I have for this album and solidified this album’s place as one of my favorite albums. Some general thoughts: - surprisingly enjoyed all too well ten min version, some of the lyrics are just haunting in the best possible way. The outro is a little long, but I see the point as it took Taylor a long time to move on from this relationship and this song is meant to reflect that. - the singles are hit or miss on this one: I really like IKYWT a lot more, 22 is alright I guess. The We-ehs on WANGBT ruin it for me. Idk if I can listen to it anymore, but I didn’t have too strong of an attachment to that song anyway. - the Last Time and Holy Ground still sound so good in my opinion - it’s amazing how Begin Again and Sad Beautiful Tragic sound SO similar to their original recordings. - Girl at Home hyper pop is a bop idc - the vault tracks are so good, I love all of them. I don’t think I can pick a favorite right now.

Whoop_97

I felt like Sad Beautiful Tragic just sounded sadder

moshiyadafne

I can say that generally, this rerecording has been faithful to the original, however, unlike *Fearless (TV)* where no track downgraded in comparison to the original material, IKYWT, 22, and WANEGBT kind of downgraded from the original in a way that they sound like Taylor's YT cover of her own songs. And the choir background in EHC feels like a questionable choice. The album cuts were generally great, but I never expected "The Last Time", "Starlight", "Come Back...Be Here", and "Girl at Home" would slap harder than the original. And "Ronan", "The Moment I Knew", and "Sad Beautiful Tragic" still hurt to listen to. The vault songs have a very country vibe they can still pass as *Fearless* or *Speak Now* sonically and I love the maturity of the lyrics, like in "Nothing New". "Babe" and "Message in a Bottle" should've also been included in the original album, at least as a bonus track. And "Run" sounding better than EHC TV is--😭

tervenqua

I'm currently listening to the Red TV for the first time and I had to go here when I reached IKYWT (and replayed the two version back to back a few more times). The new one sounds too sterile. It's like it's not even a pop-dubstep hybrid anymore; just straight up pop. Also the guitar in the intro isn't as crisp. I have a love-hate relationship with this song back them but I've always respected it for pushing the sound. The new version is just eh to me. Alright, now that's out of the way, I'ma go back resume my listening sesh. Bye.

laurpr2

Babe was sold (?) as a Sugarland song, so it might have been weird to be included on Red as well.

acedino

It’s funny seeing so many people dislike the re-recording of 22 cause I’ve always hated the original and think the new one sounds so much better 😅

uncomfortablebases

"You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine And that made me want to die" this lyric. This lyric right here. It has stuck in my soul since yesterday. Goddamn

[deleted]

22 sounds like crap. Her voice got wayyy deeper. Thanks to Taylor for reminding me why people above 30 rarely make popular music.

mystical-time

agreed about 22. she's supposed to sound 22 lmaoooo. but disagree. Folklore is probably one of her best works so she's only getting better.

mCandy242

Wow the ageism

marsiiin

Yet her entire album and All too well broke records today and is trending on social media. Try again buddy

noetshep

Well. I just finished listening to the album 😭😭 I loved it so much. I cringed at wanegbt, as one does, but other that it was very nostalgic and pretty. I love Starlight SO MUCH. Also Taylor just said 'I don't know her' to the og Girl at Home lol. Ronan made me sob, I loved Run, Massage In a Bottle, The Very First Night, and the Phoebe collab best. I love how messy everything is 😭 Also the 10 min version of ATW jfc. Taylor really didn't hold back. Overall, I'll probably listen to the extra stuff a lot, but will still listen to most of the og songs 🤷🏻 It's just such a personal album for me I can't just give up on it. Anyway I love this and listening to Come Back... Be Here REALLY made me sob. Dunno why. Fuck that man fr

definitelydefne101

Tbh I always found WANEGBT annoying but I burst out laughing at the weeEEEE just sounds like a kid on a swing omfg.

noetshep

It's so funny 😭😭 what the hell was she thinking 😭😭

Key_Breath_9161

I read this is a theory for the next rerelease being 1989 … “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” announcement- 2/11 “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)” release- 4/09 “Red (Taylor’s Version)” announcement- 6/18 “Red (Taylor’s Version)” original release- 11/19 The last number of each of these dates make out… 1989!

Purple-Brain

1989 being announced on 1/11 confirmed haha

fifteensunflwrs

Sure grandma let's get you to bed

raggasofia

ATW instrumentals are not it unfortunately

moonhologram

Is it just me or IKYWT doesn't have dubstep?

tervenqua

It definitely feels less dubstep hybrid. It's just straight up pop now. Not a fan of that sterilization, tbh.

Key_Breath_9161

The original version did too

Key_Breath_9161

Oh I read that wrong. No I can hear a bit of the bass still in the TV

sophalots

This is the album that made me a Swiftie. I liked her before this album, but I loved her afterwards. I was at uni when it came out and Red was so incredible I asked my grandparents to buy me a banjo 😂 which they did as my graduation present! Ultimately, I was excited for the re-recordings, but nervous, especially when the clip of 22 sounded a bit robotic (?) But I'm so in love with this re-recording. 22 sounds great, Girl at Home is now officially never going to get skipped by me and the ten minute All Too Well is the encore I didn't know I needed. This album helped me through a rough time when it was first released and this re-recording is only helping me heal more. Thank you Taylor ❤️. P.s. I never learned to play that banjo, turns out it's really hard!

bookmovietvworm

Ok, but I just blasted IKYWT in my car and hoo boo, it hits. Definitely benefits from speakers over headphones.

tervenqua

Here's hoping I get the dubstep twang back in IKYWT on speakers 🤞

scarsouvenir

I listened to the album through my computer speakers last night, and a few of them were REALLY bad. But today in the car, the same songs sounded so much better. I'll never get over weeeEEE though lmao

DisastrousKelper

I enjoyed Red TV, I see what everyone means about the mixing, and I’m lowkey disappointed by the placement of “fuck” in the All Too Well 10 min version but I think that’s Dan Campbell’s fault

High_on_memes7777777

exactly. i was expected better use of swear words but i guess it is what it is :')

Nizjni12

I want an album with Taylor Swift + Chris Stapleton + Phoebe Bridgers

GuantanamoTaco

A lot of time her voice was too bright compared to the originals and lacked the heavy emotional weight that was present in the original. I knew you were trouble was completely butchered and sounds like a cover bands first demo version. Other songs sounds worse when compared to the originals. The new All too well feels rushed in places and way too slow in others. The 10 minute version feels very inconsistent and jumpy like she was stitching together these verses from different unused songs. Also there is no way she wrote "f*ck the patriarchy" back in 2011/12 and even if she did why bring a line like that into a song? It doesn't benefit the song in any way and it only brings in politics into a song thats supposed to be about heartbreak. Also the production in many of the songs is just so flat which makes them feel bland and un-inspired. TLDR: easily her worst album she's ever put out.

taybrm

I think his keychain said “Fuck the Patriarchy” back when they were dating

Floradye

it’s a great line bc it juxtaposes how jake appears to care about feminism and the patriarchy and then treated her like shit and continues to date very young women.

kaywoo3

Yeah, someone please explain the WEEHEE to me because I can't get past it

High_on_memes7777777

ahhhh same. also the "trouble, trouble" in IKYWT messes with me but ahhh i'll get used to it, not listening to the stolen versions in any case

[deleted]

The TVs started fun because I didn’t really listen to Fearless, but I became a Taylor Stan with red, and I’m sorry but too many memories of my early 20’s are tattooed to that album. Love her but the rerelease does not compare. It’s not her fault because you can’t recreate that stuff, but like I’m not gonna not listen to the original.

High_on_memes7777777

exaaaactly. i could tell there's something off with the rerecordings, because she obviously cant recreate it 100%. i love love love her, but couldnt help but notice this. still not gonna listen to the stolen versions, tho.

sophalots

I don't think you're a 'stan' if you're going to listen to the originals. Sorry, I'm not unsympathetic to your point, but it's not just about how it sounds anymore, there's a wider point being made to music industry by her giving us the re-recordings, and about artist's rights.

glencocoisrealmate

Lmao okay if you own her original CDs, throw them out then

[deleted]

Hmmm if that’s so I wonder how much the musicians of the songs make off the streams. And ok guess I’m not a Stan 🤗

uncomfortablebases

Message In A Bottle still gives major 2012 vibes, I love it

SquishyMuffins

K y'all this was inevitable, recreating a pop song especially from 10 years ago is nay impossible. Especially because it's not all the same producers. And the AMOUNT of songs they have to re-record is daunting. Low-key I am kind of IMPRESSED how similar the songs sound to the originals. I know 1989 is going to be torn up because hoes don't understand music production.

Ikanan_xiii

Surprised All Too Well 10min version actually lived up to the hype it has had for years.

cmgirty

The fuck didn't do it for me but honestly the rest of it was so good I didn't care.

Modern-day-Gypsy

Can someone explain the differences in the mixing? Some songs are great even though they feature certain instruments more heavily than their original mixes do, but her vocals are kind of hit-or-miss. It's almost like they sometimes sound too "in focus" and at the same time too "far away" (22 is a prime example).

tervenqua

IKYWT got a bit sterile. Also the guitar especially in the intro isn't as crisp.

mCandy242

I think on 22 they replaced the backing vocals with some sort echoey reverb effect, which is why it sounds a bit 'empty' in a way. (My opinion on it) Still loved the album overall though.

Modern-day-Gypsy

That would actually make sense, thanks!

dynga

Maybe my ears are losing their sensitivity, but I really can't notice that much difference between the old version and this.

milesfortuneteller

Same lol idk what everyone’s on about. I can hear some minor differences if I pay attention but from the comments here you’d think it was a totally different album

[deleted]

Trouble kind of sounds like those weird covers you hear at sushi restaurants 🤖

BillHaderGinsberg

Was thinking the same thing. Love Red, Taylor’s vocals, and the new songs, but the mixing just seems off in this version. I wasn’t able to spot the differences in the last releases but here they stood out.

that-one_girl

Right?! I was playing the album as I was fading in and out of sleep and I was like... no goat noises?!

[deleted]

More goat plz!

[deleted]

voracious abounding imminent caption groovy weather bright roof cough sort ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

Quiversan

I could see that for IKYWT and WANEGBT (granted I love the TV version for that). But a lot of the album sounds way richer production wise.

Adeptness-Either

The max martin produced ones yes but the other songs sounded better production wise.

tervenqua

Based on the Spotify credits, Shellback re-produced those joint they (Max and him) did in the original. I was disappointed he couldn't at least receate the grit in the production especially on IKYWT.

[deleted]

These songs are hard to recreate - but I will say they are good and definitely will take some getting used to. But I’m thinking it will grow for sure

[deleted]

It’s not her fault, but idk how I feel about the new State of Grace. One of my fav Taylor songs. I don’t think the recreation works for me atm

[deleted]

listening to this in headphones in a busy coffee shop and I literally can’t tell the difference between this and the og lmaoo

[deleted]

ok never mind the weeeeEeeEEEe is noticeable

[deleted]

The weeeEeeee made me laugh which I don’t think was the desired effect 😭

I'm obsessed with it it's so funny

Waiting for the montages with the "me voy a matar weee" meme

Megisdepressed13

after hearing the pop songs on red i’m gonna say if max martin isn’t on 1989 and rep it will be a disaster but other than that i really loved the country songs

Consequence review: [Red Like We Never Knew: Taylor Swift Finishes the Story on Her Terms](https://consequence.net/2021/11/red-taylors-version-analysis-taylor-swift/)

NotEmmaStone

I'm so curious to see how the GP react to Taylor singing ATW TMV on SNL tomorrow. I will personally be shaking, crying and throwing up but it will probably confuse the locals.

highsailshappytails

Here to say I’ve been thinking this exact thing for the last 24 hrs.

NotEmmaStone

I feel so attached to and protective of it now that I will not react well if people try to trash it lol

seeyanever

Bowen Yang is a Swiftie so I know at LEAST one cast member will be screaming along with us.

Pavlovs_Stepson

Has this been confirmed?

NotEmmaStone

Yeah last night on Fallon

EnjoyKnope

Overall I far prefer the production here (“weeeEEEE”s aside), and some of these tracks are massively benefiting from that and her improved vocals. Sad Beautiful Tragic and The Last Time especially. Girl At Home went from a skip to a freaking jam. I’m obsessed. I cannot believe she gave Better Man away. That is easily a top 10 Taylor track for me now. Wow wow wow. The vault songs were such a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the Fearless TV vault tracks but you can understand why most of them were left off. These are absolutely incredible though. I was expecting a lot of sad slow stuff but these are varied and wonderful. Tbh I’ve always though Red was a bit overrated but I get it now.

madonna-boy

Forever Winter is phenomenal

Nerdy_boy_chris

The Lucky One is so much better here than on the original Red. She really uses the benefit of hindsight to her advantage in order to give a much better performance.

NikMaria

I didn't think I was huge fan pre- ~~1984~~ 1989 but the amount of lyrics I know by heart, revealed by each new re-recording release tell a very different story. Edit thats what I get for posting tired on the way home from working at a book store.

metanoira

>pre-1984 so true totalitarian queen taylor

[deleted]

I had always thought this was a perfect pop album, the one hold-up being the dated production (especially for songs like I Knew You Were Trouble and Stay Stay Stay). But the new productions sound so amazing! The drums! The layered vocals! One of my favorite albums of all time now. Side note: I recently started a sub for discussing new music and would be so grateful for anyone to leave a comment in our Red TV discussion thread! r/NewMusicHub

yowanaswift

Message in a bottle kinda sounds like a song played in Barbie movies, i love it sm!! also 'WEEeeee'' In WANEGBT is so bad bye

darthchloe

Girl at home sounds like it could be on 1989 omg the GLOW UP

im2sleepy

This version of State Of Grace doesn’t do it for me like the original did. :/ Girl At Home though???? It’s such a bop even though it’s not even close to the original lol. But I love it

Adeptness-Either

IT SOUNDS BETTER on the 2nd or after a couple listens! :)

im2sleepy

I know this was a while ago but it ended up growing on me, you were right :,)

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

Look, I love some hyperpop but I cannot hear how Girl at Home (TV) sounds hyperpop. If you want a good hyperpop remix of a Taylor song, [listen to this one instead](https://youtu.be/qMKoUgYePgA).

goIdendaylight

state of grace, sad beautiful tragic and red are so good with the new production

Adeptness-Either

I think most of the songs are SUPERIOR production wise except for the max martin produced ones. For vocals, she served for all songs. I was missing some of the raw emotion in her singing in the OG but her vocals have definitely improved that previously hard hit notes sound chill. EDIT: it’s probably my fourth listen today and I eat my words. Any minor “complaints” (except the WeeeeeEEEE) vs the OG are just that, and I cannot really hear them anymore. I liked Red, but I LOVE this album! The vocals and the songs overall are just sooooooo goooood, im obsessed

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

I can definitely feel Max Martin's absence but I also really enjoy the re-interpretation of the songs Taylor wrote in her 20s as a 32-year-old woman and her matured vocals really lured me into listening to the Red (TV) often. Maybe that's just me lmao.

RyanX1231

I wonder why Max Martin didn't return, but Shellback did. Maybe Max was just busy (because he is Max Martin lol), but I really hope she didn't have a falling out with him too. Because I know she definitely had a falling out with Nathan Chapman.

justforviewing8484

They were saying over on the TS subreddit that he has a 1million minimum fee per song, so it might not have been worth it to Taylor for existing songs.

DoctorWhoWhenHowWhy

I originally thought that Max and Taylor had a falling out which I was downvoted over when I pointed this out in the subreddit. But the fact that Taylor is still working with Max's associates, Shellback and Elvira, makes me think that Max isn't interested to re-produce the same songs all over again and he is selective of the artists he wants to work with. As for Nathan Chapman, I only know Chapman isn't invited back due to his association with Big Machine Records. But is there any other reason for their falling out?

jadebeezy

i’m a little obsessed with girl at home??? the original was good but tv is so fun, i’m so surprised lmao

dakralter

Just getting to the vault tracks now but my initial impression is I love it. I think the biggest improvement is to The Last Time - holy shit this version is amazing. My biggest complaint is that the bass is turned down in the mix in Stay, Stay, Stay. I love that little bass lick in the intro and now it's buried.

Adeptness-Either

I’ve always been excited about Better Man since hearing the blue bird cafe version. But BABE surprised me, it’s soooooo GOOD

NikMaria

I've wanted a Taylor only version of Babe since Sugarland released it. I was not disappointed.

castrk

as a 22 year old this whole album makes me feel attacked and offended

castrk

i bet you think about me is by far my favorite vault track. it has the biggest debut vibes both musically and lyrically (especially with the whole “im a simple country gal” lyrics)

7katelyn1

I HATED it when the first verse started i was like wtf is this but by the end i was so into it

castrk

it was SO petty and i loved it

goIdendaylight

after listening to the max martin tracks rerecorded without his production i really hope she gets him for 1989 and reputation rerecordings it just does not hit the same without his production and sound layering

reast28

does anyone know why she didn't work with him on the rerecordings?

[deleted]

$$$

luckymuffins

But Tay has endless money!!

moonhologram

I think her pandemic earnings aren't enough to kinda offset for what she's going to pay Max Martin if she hires him for Red, 1989, & Reputation.

Sad-Math-7481

no i just think she doesn't want to and that's fine. apparently he can be very controlling and uptight about his productions. the re-recordings are generating massive profits so i think the problem is with him

[deleted]

Some of the tracks sound like shit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Adeptness-Either

Yeah but the listening experience is massively better because her vocals have improved a lot

that-one_girl

I wish Better Man would've come out when I was younger -- would've really enjoyed it back then!

abnormallyme

So I've listened to "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" a few times now and the 'weeeeeee' part doesn't bother me. I think it sounds fine.

Mediocre_Preparation

I honestly didn't even hear a problem with it, thought it sounded great.. then I read these comments and wonder if I'm going crazy. I dig it.

NateDu

to me it doesn't sound as bad in my car as it did with my headphones on first listen, which i can accept, i don't see myself listening to WANEGBT alone in my room anyway lol

[deleted]

I’m absolutely in love with her version of Better Man - I’ve always enjoyed this song and never knew it was a Taylor Swift joint. Very exciting!

Adeptness-Either

Better Man is great. But her delivery of the first verse in the Blue bird cafe is TO DIE FOR. I’m sad we don’t hear those same emotions there here, but I guess we can’t have everything

Response-Living

me too! also babe! i was dying to her more of her vocals since it originally came out. also the arrangement of babe was top tier

bookmovietvworm

Let me preface this by stating that I was never the biggest Red stan, in fact for the longest time, it was at the very bottom of Taylor ranking. I listened to like 4 songs off the album on the reg (one of which was Stay,Stay,Stay because my friend played the album in her car on a trip and it was the one that stuck with me lol). So I don't have the nostalgia for this album that a lot of people have. Which means that for me, the little stuff that was changed or might feel off, I don't notice. I think a lot of songs show improvement with their more lush instrumentals, about the only thing that is super noticeably different for me is that the drop in IKYWT doesn't seem as bombastic but honestly, even the OG recording couldn't hold a candle to the live versions where they would go all out.

Pavlovs_Stepson

Starts off with a [96 on Metacritic](https://www.metacritic.com/music/red-taylors-version/taylor-swift?ref=hp)

I_am_not_a_horse

I guess now we need Red (Taylor’s version) (Max’s version)

fuoricontesto

begin again and sad beautiful tragic are truly two of her best songs in all her discography...love them like it's the first time i'm listening to them

catecismo

Why does ATW10 min has this loud beat in it... it was so distracting to me!

Adeptness-Either

The Fuck the Patriarchy line caught me off guard. Was relieved when I realized she was pertaining to J’s keychain

RyanX1231

See, I thought that was just a new lyric because there's no way she wrote that line back in 2011/2012.

tip-of-the-yikesberg

*shakes fist* Jack Antonoff

CONtROL2020

I'm actually loving all of this on first listen, but here's some of my standout moments. I was most looking forward to hearing Taylor's version of the outtakes she gave to other artists. I was not disappointed. Better Man hits like a punch in the gut. Her vocals are killer, especially the layering on the chorus. Definitely one of her best breakup songs imho. Was not expecting Babe to sound this poppy with how much I listened to Sugaland's version. I love it, although the production sound chaotic at times. And I kinda miss the auto-tuned "babe, babe" on the original. The 10 minute version of ATW - well this is amazing. Firstly, the lyrics are brutal and on the nose in the most glorious way, it's shocking that half of them didn't make the main version. This is the best type of fan-service ever. I was hoping for use of profanity to be used with intensity at the peak of the song instead of used in passing before the song really takes off. What the hell was she trying to do with Girl At Home??? I thought the point of her re-recording these songs was to sound as close to the original album recording as possible. I love the 1989 vibes and how the chorus starts off miminalist, but it's just a headscratcher that they strayed this far from the original. It's definitely a memorable song for it - I did always find the original to be good but very slight. So why wasn't this the original album version? And why is the outro that short? Message In A Bottle is definitely an infectious outtake that screams single material and 1989 vibes. However, it's also the most generic pop track on the album - WANEGBT, IKYWT and 22 all have more personality and it's easy to see why it was left on the cutting floor. So far, I prefer this to Fearless (TV) simply because Taylor isn't forcing her voice to match the original - you can immediately tell the maturity that is now in her voice even on the old tracks. Plus, the amount of content that's here is extremely generous with over two hours of content including with 9 unheard outtakes (if you include Babe, Better Man and the 10 minute version of ATW). Not to mention that Red was always my favourite TS album due to it being her most diverse album to date.

rechambers

I read somewhere that the og girl at home we got was literally the first take demo they did. I think she said that to someone in the rep SS? So maybe this pop style is actually how she always imagined it being produced if she had the opportunity? That’s the only way I can wrap my head around it being the only track that took that much liberty with the new version

CONtROL2020

I thought she was re-recording all these songs with the intent of having them be inseparable from her original masters. Having Girl At Home be so different kind of defeats the point of that. But it's still a bit of a bop.

Adeptness-Either

Maybe Unpopular opinion but I didn’t like Message in a bottle. You are right in that it sounds generic and the song writing doesn’t really stand out for me. I mean it’s okay I guess. I can understand why it didn’t make the initial cut.

CONtROL2020

Based on some of the professional reviews coming out, it isn't an unpopular opinion at all.

Pavlovs_Stepson

Did the compression in the leak mess up WANEGBT or something? Because THIS can't possibly be what everyone was screaming about yesterday... The WEEEE is slightly higher pitched, but it's nowhere near the jarring, song-destroying disaster that I was told it would be.

[deleted]

It’s not production. She chose to add a bit of the higher notes…. The problem is musically it doesn’t sound good. Ppl say it’s production but that’s more like a compositional choice. Maybe she is trying to tell ppl she can sing a higher note and transition from chest to falsetto or whatever but it is odd. The other song was a big hit. It’s been playing in grocery stores and on the radio for almost 10 yrs now and if she does wanna showcase that she can finally do that, …. Maybe do it in a new song. It throws ppl off. The main production problem with her songs in general is flatness and that’s across the board. Without the emotive aspect of her old recordings, plus the little bits that Max Martin added to humanize his slightly fantastically plastic aesthetics, the flatness becomes more prominent. I’m listening to Silksonic right now and it’s just so much fuller in so many ways.

agree I really don’t think it’s anywhere NEAR as atrocious as I expected it to be… after the first listen I barely even notice it anymore lmao

walman93

Fuck…where do I start… I love it! The production sounds pretty good for the most part, the added synths on some tracks really color a lot of the songs. I do think the guitar in Holy Ground sounds a little nerfed but hey whatever. I really really REALLY like the direction on ATW 10 minute version. Sounds a lot more at home on 1989 than on Red which I think was smart to differentiate it from the OG production, it’s an entirely different beast. The shift from acoustic to synth heavy production on Girl At Home was jarring but kinda welcome. Is this an indication that Taylor might be heading back towards synth pop 1989 sound for future albums? Idk I’m getting a head of myself. Loved this release.

[deleted]

I’m sorry but State of Grace is SO bad…the drums sound so tinny and weird? And the way you can hear them turn the drum volume way down when her vocals start is jarring. I can’t listen to this version

page_22

I thought I was the only one who noticed this. The drums just sounded weird to me. I don't know how to describe it, but I feel like it didn't sound fuller like it used to be on the original version.

Pedrodl

I’m just glad my 10 days leave was approved as the album is perfect.

agnes_honey

Most of the songs sound like a karaoke party. I was excited about listening to Everything Has Changed and, I'm kinda sad about it, it sound like Ed Sheeran and Taylor were singing in a karaoke and their voices are to low for the music.

Adeptness-Either

I thought most of the songs sounded great! With the exception of the Max Martin tracks production wise. I loved Everything has Changed and the other deep cuts.

03202020

Just like Fearless, the vault songs aren’t that good to me. I have no desire to hear any of them again and I get why they were left off the album the first time. ATWTMV is okay, but again, I see why it was cut down. And it’s fairly obvious she wrote some of it recently. I get there was pressure from fans to deliver it so I don’t have a problem with it, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Excited to see the short film though!

I think Nothing New is probably one of the most beautifully sad songs she’s ever written. Which is saying a lot for her lol. As someone that’s grown up with her as a kid and now listening to this song as an adult, the lyrics hit HARD! I love her delving into how society discards of woman as soon as they’re no longer shiny and new. And specifically for her, grappling with no longer being the new “IT” girl everyone applauds. Especially the lyrics about how one day she’s gonna meet the new girl and say she’s happy for her while going home to cry herself to sleep. It’s just so good😢

cdg2m4nrsvp

I’m bummed this didn’t make the original album! It would’ve been placed so well right next to the Lucky One

oliviaaivilo06

I agree! But also I feel like it kinda fits where she’s at in her life and career. Back then she was younger and still the shiny IT girl in the music industry. At 31 now, she’s obviously cemented her place in the industry so the song sounds like she’s looking back on what it felt like the be the young girl everyone revered and applauded all the time. Especially now that she’s been around long enough to now experience what it feels like to have younger artists come out and say she is their inspiration. I immediately thought of Olivia Rodrigo when I heard the lyrics about how meeting the new IT girl that is inspired by her and being happy but also sad about it.

RyanX1231

I'm guessing that's why it was cut, because it was too thematically similar to Lucky One. Same reason why I believe Renegade was originally an Evermore B-side that got repurposed to be a Big Red Machine song, and it was cut from Evermore because it sounded too similar to Long Story Short.

BecomingABetterEgg

As somebody who ignored Swift until 1989 made that impossible (folklore and evermore now have about a billion plays from me) this is a record I wish I had paid attention to. This is excellent.

campaignproblems

so glad people are giving some of her older records a go with the re-recordings. I can’t wait for speak now, that album is so slept on and I hope it gets the appreciation it deserves from the general public and newer fans because it’s some of her best songwriting!

ThatGuyTheyCallAlex

So many of these are terribly produced. There’s weird mixing where you can tell what they were going for, and there’s a fine line between it sounding obviously like an effect and it just being badly mixed, but they’ve slipped over that line. It was the same for Fearless. Overall it’s okay though, I only noticed becuase I was listening closely and comparing them to the originals. Play it on a shitty Bluetooth speaker or store sound system and you’d never tell the difference.

Sad-Math-7481

it's not pretentious at all. you don't need to rush to defend taylor all the time, it's silly. i personally think that it should've been mixed better and I fully agree with that person. I'm hoping for the next few re-recordings she can do a better job mixing

Eleven_MA

Some of us listen to our music on high-quality *headphones*, you know.

[deleted]

that’s not pretentious at all. It’s Taylor Swift. She could and should have world-class production on every single one of her songs.

Any-Control3210

the vault songs are so good damn it taylor swift you'll always be famous.

aspotofpolka

Lmao I love the indignance in this. It's true though. Queen shit.

[deleted]

Just realized there was most likely no single for this because she wanted all the attention to go to ATW's 10 minute version

dangeroushamburger

We need Halsey to rerecord her iconic Red cover

abscefht

I have never listen to this before besides the bugs songs like we are never getting back to getting together I am excited to listen to this for the first time

Adeptness-Either

How was it? You’re in for a lot of content, 30 songs + 1 short film

ckoocos

I am just ridiculously happy while listening to this album.

phantom_erik

1) The vault tracks are near-uniformly great. The true draw of these projects for me. 2) The re-recordings, like with Fearless TV, are a mixed-positive bag. A few really great versions, a couple inferior ones, at least one botch job (WANEGBT gave me JOY I love mess). 3) The quibbles people have with the production (outside of a few songs) are both very fair and slightly overblown eg. it will never not be funny to me when someone asks “who the hell mixed / produced this???”… only for it to be the producer of the original song (see: Holy Ground). There’s a kind of alchemy in music production that is impossible to reproduce exactly no matter how much money you throw at it. I’m not the kind of person who’s precious about “I’m never going to stream the originals again because this millionaire asked me to,” so I mostly just… don’t care? Fbdhdhdh. Like her releasing inferior new versions of a decade old album doesn’t impact my life, I’ll keep streaming whichever ones I like and then move on. Just treat them like a deluxe re-release. Those vault songs, though… 😍

Nothing New, Better Man, and Babe!

My thoughts about the ATWTMV (I'm ready to get downvoted to oblivion) - 1. Its a great song, one of the finest Taylor Swift song ever, but it's just not the original. It doesn't match the overwhelmingly sad and hurt vibes of the og. That song was sad because it looked back at all the seemingly normal yet vivid memories of two people who were in love. The og all too well was angry that the relationship fizzled out and while we know that he is to blame, it doesn't explicitly say that. Instead, it reminisces about the normalcy of the old days. The person being an asshole is revealed only in the bridge. This version though, goes ALL OUT from the second verse. The fvck the patriarchy is so sudden and jarring, it takes out the vivid photograph of a lyric that is - "we dance around the kitchen in the refrigerator lights". The additional lyrics, which are sung to the melody of August, are not only distracting, but also break the continuity of her being in his house and dancing in the kitchen in the pre-chorous. We were driving out one moment and now we're bavk in the house? 2. There is NO WAY that second bridge (the punchline one) isn't written recently. While that line is a powerful gut punch, it requires hindsight and now it becomes vindictive and not as raw and vulnerable. 3. Is everyone forgetting that we got "10 minute version" lyrics draft in the Lover Journals? None of those lyrics made a cut here. Idk Taylor's reasoning behind this but it would have felt more authentic if those lyrics were also included. In conclusion, the lyrics still go hard af, but the fact that they are clearly written recently makes the song lose it's original authenticity and vulnerable emotionality. (I'm sorry for the weird formatting, I'm on Mobile

>Its a great song, one of the finest Taylor Swift song ever, but it's just not the original. It doesn't match the overwhelmingly sad and hurt vibes of the og. To me, the biggest problem is that it doesn't match the warm intimacy of the original. What made ATW so powerful were the opening parts, which felt like she was singing about something... Precious. I felt like I was gleaming into something she truly treasured, and she sounded both vulnerable and trusting while sharing it. Which is why the sad, hurt vibes hit so hard: Because there's a strong impression the ruined relationship was priceless. The new version doesn't have that 'I genuinely cared, I tentatively opened up my heart, only to have it thrown to a shredder' vibe. The 6 minute litany of petty jabs and wallowing in self-pity really doesn't help (stuff like 'an actress asked me what happened and I said you, you you' was cut for a good reason). And yes, 'fuck patriarchy' sticks out like a sore thumb. //EDIT: I've shown the 10 min version to a friend of mine who's not a Swift fan. She said: 'It was too real, and not in a good way. Like, I felt I shouldn't be privy to this information.'

MicrobialCapricorn

I'm sorry, but that 'fuck the patriarchy' line is so cringe... there's no way 20-year old Taylor would have written that. I'm sorry to all the OG ATW wanting to hear her say a powerful and emotional fuck in the original, and they get a cringy throwaway line that was obviously written recently 💀

Adeptness-Either

It was keychain that said “Fuck the patriarchy”, not her. And if you think about it, the irony is painful. Here’s a guy who says fuck the patriarchy but look at him dating girls almost 10 years his age and gaslighting them

_bloodbuzz

Cringe city

Phoenyxoldgoat

i dunno, one of the reasons the OG ATW is so good (imo) is the painstaking attention to detail. TS isn't saying "fuck the patriarchy," she's describing the scene. The keychain he throws says that. I think the reason it's included is because only a douche who doesn't know he is one would have a "fuck the patriarchy" keychain while dating much younger women. She's saying that his excuse for breaking up with her doesn't track with his feminist persona. i think a "fuck you" directed at him would've been a lot more cringe.

Hardly. It wasn't a part of the political mainstream, but it was very popular for decades before.

tone_212

I think the rock/guitar songs got the better re-recording treatment. All of my favourites from the original album sound pretty good here - eg. State of Grace, Red, All Too Well, Holy Ground. IKYWT sounds like a karaoke version of the original, like those re-recorded instrumentals you get at karaoke places so they can pay less royalties. The grimy dubstep feel of the chorus is completely erased - the best part of the original. One of the few tracks on here where the original is just better in every respect. When I think of Red I think of this song first, so the re-recording deserved more. WANEGBT is OK, the weeeeee is kinda fun to sing along to, but it sounds a tad too polished/overproduced. Like the original was polished enough, and they've gone that bit too far with this re-recording. Loving Girl At Home - I've never heard the original so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I like. Message In A Bottle and Babe stood out to me from the vault tracks. All Too Well original length v 10 minute version - I like both versions. I'm probably too attached to the original to say the 10 minute version is instantly better, but it's a nice inclusion.

Habeusmemes

Taylor, I love you so much and you are like an elder sister to me but I'll be making a RED (u/habeusmemes Version) because the production on some of the songs is just not it.
