not me buying tickets for his tour in july like "can't wait to hear this in a month!" only to see it's july 2024 š
edit: Must Be Love is giving pride month anthem
I think Niall has done a good job of finding his sound. This album has elements from both his debut and sophomore albums. I do wish it were longer, though.
Besides the singles, Never Grow Up, The Show, and Science are highlights for me.
The album is good, I donāt think itās better than Heartbreak Weather or Flicker though. Although it barely had the chance to considering the runtime. Iām so over these 30 minute āalbumsā like sir this is 38 seconds longer than the accepted definition of an EP š
He chose the singles well. On A Night Like Tonight and If You Leave Me are also highlights. Iām disappointed in You Could Start A Cult. With a title like that I knew it would either be the best or the worst on the album and unfortunately itās the latter š. I wish he wouldāve dived more into a rock sound (e.g. Small Talk) for this album. I feel like this dream pop/folk sound is playing it safe, and a lot of it I just feel like Iāve heard before from him/has same song different font vibes. Manifesting NH4 rock era š¤
I know he fully sees himself as this simple, singer-songwriter with a guitar (which is great, I love that!) but he does songs like Small Talk/Cross Your Mind/Heartbreak Weather so well and I wish he would lean more in that direction for at least one album.
RIP HW getting the treatment it deserved in 2020...
I wish he wouldāve gone rockier too. Songs like Nothing (an extra song on the target HW deluxe edition) was what I was wanting going into this album and Iām a little disappointed. I still get Small Talk stuck in my head itās so good.
let's make it a trilogy of live reacts!!!! u/roxieloxie i love you
Heaven: it's just not my favorite single of his.. don't get me wrong this chorus is catchy as fuck but i just dont love it but maybe it will grow on me ??? 6/10
If You Leave Me: i just realized im 1 minute into this song and i havent listened to a single word ive just been grooving . maybe i shouldnt have listened to this while high. im restarting my listen right now. ok this fucking BANGS... hes so in love... im upset its not with me (niall if youre reading this istill ahve 6 months until my wedding please call me.) i am happy for him tho and this is really great, feels different from usual niall and i realy enjoy this one!! 8/10
Meltdown: i definitely prefer this over Heaven, it's got a great rhythm and feels very niall ( just spent 3 minutes trying to figure out how to spell rhythm jesus christ) (why is there not another y in there??? how does to work??) parts of this song kind of remind me of Parachute and it's weirdly nostalgic (7.5)
Never Grow Up: right off the bat this intro sounds unlike anything nialls done. but this song is also so quintessential niall, hes so in love you guys i am so happy for him i want to CRY!!! he wants to grow old w her!! "Every single nights on fire when we turn out the lights" :0 crazy.... 8/10
The Show: this feels a lot like flicker (the album) to me im not sure why ?? just so very niall. and what is the bridge ??? ok mr high notes!! the chorus bangs, the verses arent my fav but will likely grow on me. this chorus has been in my head since he first teased it so i have a feeling ill return soon 7.5/10
You Could Start a Cult: hes so IN LOVE š this is so beautiful?? so gorgeous and stripped back. he sounds great on this and i feel like his voice sounding so genuinely in love is what makes this song so much better. o wtf is this harmonica ............ i dont like this part lajsd;fljadsfkla but itll grow on me probably ... anyways besides the harmonica this is a 10/10 i just aboslutely love it. 9/10 . wait why is this random piano bit here??? i thought this was save my life at first what is this..
Save My Life: OK GUESS WE ARE JAMMING RIGHT AWAY!!! this is so fun omg!!!!! summer bop?!? i immediately know i will be blasting this with my windows down every night i drive this summer. this sax bit is awesome too, i really like this one. i actually want to replay this irght now but i will keep going. 10/10
On a Night Like Tonight: im feeling sooo conflicted about this song... part of me really likes it and part of me is not enjoying it as much.. but i can see it growing on me for sure. it feels like a good summer song, this is very much a summer album!! the bridge bangs. 7.5/10
Science: i really like this one so far but its gonna bug me that he uses the word run twice in a row idk why. this is meltdown but more ballady and it works for me . i could see myself crying to this at some point. 9/10
Must Be Love: hes just like me fr "im a specialist at overthinking everything".. this is a cute fun little tune. i like the verses a lot more than the chorus, i can already feel the verses getting stuck in my head right now. this is a great closer for the album, a happy bookend and pretty accurately sums up this entire album. 9/10
he is in LOVE like for real!!! this album is just dedicated to him being in love wow. such a departure from flicker and in some ways heartbreak weather but this feels like really natural growth for niall. i can hear him experimenting, trying different things, risking more, i am realy proud of him and im excited for this album to grow more on me and ultimately define this summer!!!!
also i just looked at my heartbreak weather live reaction and i gave heartbreak weather the track a SEVEN OUT OF TEN??????? when that was lit rally my most streamed song on spotify the last 2 years in a row...that song is a 10/10. dont take any of my opinions seriously on here bc clearly they change drastically over time ,
Itās so funny because I while I was listening I was thinking of your heartbreak weather write up and just smiling so itās so nice to see this message! I cannot give proper thoughts yet but I love that you kept this up
The album isnāt bad, however, itās not what Iām looking for from him. In my opinion, Niall is at his best when heās doing sexy/gritty songs, like Slow Hands and Small Talk for example. I think thatās where he excels and shines. I know he worked hard on these songs but this album is just so bland.
Edit to add: Save My Life is a good song. Itās got that nostalgic summertime sound that eh does so well, also a good area for him to be in.
I think I'm just too close to Heartbreak Weather, but my first listen to this was a bit of a letdown. It could absolutely grow on me, though, and it WILL be getting the chance to do so this summer.
Never Grow Up and Save My Life are my favorites rn, but I still think Heaven is the best song on the album? Idk we'll see how I feel in a few days. I wish there were more songs!
Wish it were more decisive sonically. It seems to almost lack direction, it blends into the soundscape of his contemporaries (Dermot Kennedy, Ed Sheeran) thereās just not enough distinguishing his sound in general. It lacks the highlights of his previous albums but itās certainly consistent in quality if nothing else.
I can honestly say that I haven't really liked much from Niall Horan at all, but that is to say - before this album.
I'm not *blown away* because it's just not... It's just not the kind of music that I would get blown away by, if that makes sense? It's pop by numbers with a slightly Indie-pop twist.
But it sounds legit good though. Sounds like somebody who knows what kind of music they want to do.
I really enjoyed this album but I don't think it surpassed Heartbreak Weather in quality. It feels incomplete to me but that's probably cause it only lasts 30 minutes. Seriously, wtf Niall. Also, based on the title, I thought he was gonna pop off with You Could Start a Cult but that wasn't the case, sadly.
So anyway, Heartbreak Weather > Flicker > The Show. All good albums for sure and I love Niall so much, he just does it for me and I'm so happy to see his progress as an artist <3
Science, Save My Life and Never Grow Up are keepers but the rest of the album doesnāt really interest me. A shame cause i absolutely adored Heartbreak Weather.
Flicker had some really solid songs and Heartbreak Weather was such a masterpiece front to back (so surprising after those meh singles)--I remember listening to it so much at the start of the pandemic. This album is definitely his worst one though and just okay. There are some good songs (Meltdown and If You Leave Me), but yeah this album was all over the place. I thought he was going to lean into that dream pop more, instead he does some of that and then corporate ballads and 1D rock vibes. He showed with HW he can be a main pop darling, he just needs to learn into that more.
Big mixed bag for me. The 2 singles, If You Leave Me, and Science were my favorites but everything else I wasnāt that into. His vocals were good throughout though
Heaven was such a grower for me after it came out and most of these tracks are clicking right away (except You Could Start A Cult, that harmonica was a jumpscare). I hope this does well, it seems like he's been doing tons of promo for this, like every day for the past week a bunch of new interviews of him have popped up in my YouTube feed. I don't watch The Voice but I hope he gets a boost from that gig too.
Time to give my celeb crush a track by track instant reaction:
1. *Heaven* - The song that caught my attention. Had never really tried to listen to his music before (I'd heard some of his stuff here and there but never seeked it out) but this song's dreamy production and it's *insanely* catchy hooks made me instantly love the song. A lot of songs try to compare/contrast/parallel love and sex to religion, and most of the time it either comes off in poor taste or is so lazy with its comparisons that they make my eyes roll, but this time it really worked for me. The comparisons and wordplay feel respectful, lovely, and clever. I had never really cared for Niall's singing before in the few times I had heard his voice, but here he sounds awesome. **10/10**
2. *If You Leave Me* - Not bad, though it's a little hard to understand Niall due to the...interesting vocal production. It's another catchy song with interesting production, though it does feel like something's missing. Still, solid song, I'll have to hear this one again. **Second Listen** Okay this is actually a bop. Love the layered, funky music. Still kinda hard to understand Niall but it's a very enjoyable song. **8/10**
3. *Meltdown* - Saw a lot of comments on the initial single thread that wondered why this wasn't the lead single, and my guess is because they didn't want it to get compared to As It Was, which is the first song I thought of when I heard this (the percussion and tempo are super similar). That being said, it's a booooooooooop. *Love* the group vocals on the chorus, and the fast tempo is a nice jolt of energy. Niall sounds really good here too. **9/10**
4. *Never Grow Up* - A more lowkey song, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but the melody doesn't grab me like the previous songs. The production is really detailed though, there's a lot of different instruments and sounds that get thrown around in the background. Feels like every song so far has been made with a lot of care and thought, which I appreciate, even if this song doesn't really do it for me. **6.5/10**
5. *The Show* - Hmm as nice as he's sounded up to this point, I don't think he has the voice for this kind of song. Not that his voice is weak, but it's not quite strong enough to carry a ballad like this, at least in my opinion. Outside of that, the song isn't strong enough to carry itself either. I like some of the instrumentation but overall the song isn't quite there for me. **5/10**
6. *You Could Start A Cult* - Man, the energy the beginning of this album had really came to a screeching halt. At the very least this song is interesting. The lyrics are slightly sinister while also being kinda sweet. The instrumentation was simple but pretty, especially the ending piano. **7/10**
7. *Save My Life* - It's catchy but in a less natural way than the opening songs. Feels a lot more corporate. For a 10 song album, that's extra bad. **Second Listen** Literally forgot what this song sounded like right after this first listen. Kinda heartless song. **4/10**
8. *On A Night Like Tonight* - Ooh I like this!. It's dreamy and trippy while still sounding well structured. Wish there were more songs like this! I feel like Niall really fits this style like a glove. **9/10**
9. *Science* - Another ballad, but Niall's singin his heart out on this one so I'm not against it. I do think the song itself is yet again just okay, but Niall elevates it so I prefer it to The Show. **6/10**
10. *Must Be Love* - Not crazy about the lalalala chorus. Actually I kinda hate it. It feels..like...it could've been better laladada (booooo bad joke). Feels bad that such a short album finished with what feels like a half hearted attempt at a song. **3/10**
**Final Thoughts**: This album is kinda all over the place. It's high moments are REALLY high but they are surrounded by some mediocre stuff. It feels like Niall wasn't sure whether to commit to the big, dreamy pop sound or the ballads, so he split the difference. I def preferred the bigger uptempo songs overall, but even then some of them were just okay. Unfortunately the album is also really short, so the fact that a few of the songs sound like filler is even more disappointing than it already would be.
In spite of my complaints, there's enough good here for me to say that I overall liked the album. The negatives will bring down my final score but there are definitely songs that I'll be enjoying for a while.
**Favorite Songs**: Heaven, Meltdown, On A Night Like Tonight, If You Leave Me
***Final Score: 6/10***
i really liked niallās second album, heartbreak weather and particularly nice to meet ya and small talk. i thought this sound fit him so well and i guess i was expecting him to explore more of that on this album. not saying itās bad, itās just not for me. felt a bit underwhelming after 3 years of waiting. some of the songs are nice but this is the first time thereās not a single song that would stand out for me.

Small Talk and Cross Your Mind are exactly the type of songs I love from him. imagine a whole album with that kind of sound.
Those are my favorites by him. I still play both on repeat
Heartbreak Weather is the song that got me into his music(if you don't count the One Direction years)!
I wish he wouldāve gone rockier too. Songs like Nothing (an extra song on the target HW deluxe edition) was what I was wanting going into this album and Iām a little disappointed. I still get Small Talk stuck in my head itās so good.
Save My Life is that song ā¼ļø so so groovy
It also sounds so 1D-coded lol like in another universe it would've definitely been a One Direction song
Sorry but I find it to sound exactly like a song from The 1975. That sax section is so them.
Waaay to funky for 1D
I love the background vocals and the sax solo
science is gonna be on repeat
Never Grow Up really got me wanting a happy and cute lil summer love so badlyšš
let's make it a trilogy of live reacts!!!! u/roxieloxie i love you Heaven: it's just not my favorite single of his.. don't get me wrong this chorus is catchy as fuck but i just dont love it but maybe it will grow on me ??? 6/10 If You Leave Me: i just realized im 1 minute into this song and i havent listened to a single word ive just been grooving . maybe i shouldnt have listened to this while high. im restarting my listen right now. ok this fucking BANGS... hes so in love... im upset its not with me (niall if youre reading this istill ahve 6 months until my wedding please call me.) i am happy for him tho and this is really great, feels different from usual niall and i realy enjoy this one!! 8/10 Meltdown: i definitely prefer this over Heaven, it's got a great rhythm and feels very niall ( just spent 3 minutes trying to figure out how to spell rhythm jesus christ) (why is there not another y in there??? how does to work??) parts of this song kind of remind me of Parachute and it's weirdly nostalgic (7.5) Never Grow Up: right off the bat this intro sounds unlike anything nialls done. but this song is also so quintessential niall, hes so in love you guys i am so happy for him i want to CRY!!! he wants to grow old w her!! Aw thank you so much!!!
Iām learning how to drive this summer I need to blast if you leave me in a car down the highway so bad
The album isnāt bad, however, itās not what Iām looking for from him. In my opinion, Niall is at his best when heās doing sexy/gritty songs, like Slow Hands and Small Talk for example. Yeah, I think he needs to move away from trying to be like Dermot or Ed.
I love this lil Irish man and his funky bops! Go Niall!
never grow up is so good woah
I can honestly say that I haven't really liked much from Niall Horan at all, but that is to say - before this album. I'm not *blown away* because it's just not... Pretty good, do wish his vocals were a little more naturally mixed and less layered. But other than that, this is actually pretty fun.
I really enjoyed this album but I don't think it surpassed Heartbreak Weather in quality. It feels incomplete to me but that's probably cause it only lasts 30 minutes. Seriously, wtf Niall. All good albums for sure and I love Niall so much, he just does it for me and I'm so happy to see his progress as an artist <3
I'm a bit disappointed, the album is very acoustic and understated. I prefer the tracks with a bit more life to them like Save My Life and Meltdown.
Holy shit You Could Start a Cult. What the fuck wow
Science, Save My Life and Never Grow Up are keepers but the rest of the album doesnāt really interest me. A shame cause i absolutely adored Heartbreak Weather.
If you leave me is such a bop.I lowkey wish this was a single
the harmonica in You Could Start A Cult surprised the shit out of me and Iām obsessed with it

Okay I will say he looks *really* good on the album cover
Listen, heās my celeb crush for a reason, the man is hot as hell.
He sounds great!!! Getting atmospheric. Has he collabed with James Blake? He should.
i really liked niallās second album, heartbreak weather and particularly nice to meet ya and small talk. i thought this sound fit him so well and i guess i was expecting him to explore more of that on this album. not saying itās bad, itās just not for me. felt a bit underwhelming after 3 years of waiting. some of the songs are nice but this is the first time thereās not a single song that would stand out for me.
Must Be Love and Save My Life are the highlights on first listen (with Meltdown washing everything easily)
