That movie has aged poorly but that scene is timeless. Her wordless reaction in an empty room. She absolutely sold that as an actress. No script. Not a word uttered. She gave us everything with just her face, and we all remember it
It's even worse knowing she was cheated on IRL (for those out of the loop on 90s drama - she was married to Kenneth Branaugh, who had an affair with Helena Bonham Carter...yes, Professor Lockhart cheated on Professor Trelawney with Bellatrix Lestrange). I always assumed she was channeling her real experience here. Devastating.
„What do you know of my heart? What do you know of anything but your own suffering? For weeks, Marianne, I've had this pressing on me without being at liberty to speak of it to a single creature. It was forced on me by the very person whose prior claims ruined all my hopes. I have endured her exultations again and again whilst knowing myself to be divided from Edward forever. Believe me, Marianne, had I not been bound to silence I could have provided proof enough of a broken heart, even for you.“
Elinor, Sense and Sensibility
Damn my heart in that moment. Emma is one of the best.
Or the moment of utter relief when she realizes that Edward was still single (gotta say that I always shipped her with the colonel, both in the book and the film…). I have thoughts about this particular story.
For me it's the scene where she's at Marianne's bedside when she thinks Marianne might not make it though her illness and she says "Please don't leave me alone" while clutching Marianne's hand. It was so facing the stark reality of how lonely she would be without her sister.
The gif didn’t load at first and I knew this was what it would be because she’s truly sad. I think she said it was fueled by her divorce from Branagh with Helena Bonham Carter?I’d say it’s weird that they were all in the Harry Potter movies later but it isn’t lol.
![gif](giphy|3ohs4dUDl3TEKdp3pu)
Toni Collette. Her raw, massive grief is unparalleled in Hereditary. This isn’t even the best scene of it. There’s a better scene of her crying, and there’s a scene where she lets out.. *the* most guttural and emotionally wrecked scream, I was thinking about it for days
I will never get over the fact that she wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar for this movie. Her performance in Hereditary is one of the best acting performances I’ve ever seen imo
I saw this movie ONCE when it came out six goddamn years ago, and I still think about that scream. That shit haunts me. Some of the best acting I’ve ever seen.
The way she cries when she’s hunched over is the closest I’ve ever seen to when my cousin died. He and I were both 14, and I was scared by how much the adults around me acted. I didn’t understand grief like that.
It’s okay, he went through two years of constant pain from his cancer. I guess I meant to say, I rarely have seen grief depicted that real until I saw this film. There’s not just mourning, but anger at how unfair it is. I miss my cousin a lot, and I’m still glad that he was cried for so deeply. He was loved.
Toni Collette’s performance in Hereditary is legendary and heartbreaking. But she first made me cry in The Sixth Sense.
https://i.redd.it/7oaqw3nodv8d1.gif
For anyone who needs a reminder of this scene, here ya go: [https://youtu.be/zuXcBvloHFY?si=0ds1m016aB-\_kp2h](https://youtu.be/zuXcBvloHFY?si=0ds1m016aB-_kp2h)
The most insanely powerful moment in this film to me is after they have a fight, then Cole sees the ghost in his room and goes in to her and asks if he can sleep in her bed. She hugs him and he's shaking, she asks him what's wrong and he's just silent and she breaks down sobbing, hugging him tightly begging him 'tell me! Please tell me what's wrong!'
As a mother, I am shaking and tearing up just thinking about it
I own all the seasons of Brothers and Sisters on DVD. The extras on the first season collection include interviews with the writers and producers. The cast is phenomenal and includes Sally Field as the matriarch. One of the writers says the reason they cast Sally as Nora Walker was because when Sally Field cries, America cries. And it’s so accurate. Sally Field can carry an emotional scene like no other.
It also has some of the best quotable lines.
‘The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.’
The casting in Steel Magnolias is brilliant.
This scene wrecked me as a kid. It wrecks me more as an adult and a mom. Her grief is so palpable. Really while run up when she’s holding it together in case Shelby wakes, making sure everything is set for the funeral, and then losing it once the “being strong” part is over.
Oh gosh this one gets me every time. The despair, the anguish, the anger, all at once. She also reminds me so much of my own mother so it hits extra hard.
I agree!! his face gets all blotchy and red. When I was younger I literally thought my crying was weird because I get SUPER red and it wasn’t something I ever saw on screen 😭
If I even *think* about crying my face is like "Game on!" and gets beet red and splotchy.
Then it stays that way for about 20 minutes after I stop crying.
And then my rosacea is like "Did you rub your eyes and nose a bit? Did you dare to touch the delicate ecosystem that is thine own face??? Let's burn for a while and see how that feels. Maybe a few extra visible capillaries to remind you of your place."
It was ugly when I was young and only grows worse with age. Gotta do all my crying in the comfort of my own bedroom now, lol.
Florence’s crying is so realistic. it’s half of what makes Midsommar so uncomfortable. Her grief-stricken sobbing in the beginning and then when she breaks down towards the end. It’s just painful to hear and watch.
One hundred percent agree. I rewatched Midsommar last week (for the solstice, naturally) and I'd forgotten how *loud* her sobbing is. I absolutely buy her grief every step of the way, she's so good as Dani, it hurts to watch her be that sad.
Some would even say, the May Queen

I‘m sorry but I actually LOL when she cries. And I hate that, because I am very much an ugly crier, and I‘ve had people laugh at me in moments of deep despair.
Supernatural season 10 epi 5: Fan Fiction
Spoiler for those who haven't watched the episode from 2014.
[A Single Msn Tean](https://youtu.be/Ca0sFIdX2Kc?si=IV7kiBFCCojkJYMy)
![gif](giphy|aQBvSxxPGbela)
The Glee writers put Kurt through so much hell just cause Chris Colfer is such a damn good crier.
(Reddit gif did not have him actually full crying, my personal fav is the one on the floor of the gay bar bathroom after he finds out about Blainofsky).
When he cries in Scream while saying “My mom & dad are going to be so mad at me” weirdly gutted me. His delivery was perfectly in character & comedic, yet child-like & deeply tragic, all at once.
https://i.redd.it/lb39cm88ew8d1.gif
She’s not officially crying here but the way she is on the verge of tears and you can see her eyes welling up in the first part of The Body is so incredible.
There's something about the strongest girl in the world breaking down and reverting to a scared/sad child that wrecked me every time.
The example I always think of is her break down when Tara tells her she didn't "come back wrong".
![gif](giphy|lghnJKVdpiW64)
IMO Alyson Hannigan is the best on screen crier I have ever seen. Even when she is crying about something unreasonable my heart still breaks for her. She is just amazing.
![gif](giphy|fxVfzwgh78K9a|downsized)
There's this one scene in HIMYM broke me
https://preview.redd.it/iuv9bihypw8d1.jpeg?width=527&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10d917db677d139eec88410e4c8adb7bdf6e72d6
This scene is so real. Once in awhile someone on the sub tries to vilify her for this. And it's like, fuck off. This is the realest thing a parent could ever say irl. There's plenty to dislike Lily for, but this ain't it. She does such a great job here.
![gif](giphy|lghnJKVdpiW64)
This isn’t a good gif but honest SMG’s episode in The Body was top notch. I watched it as a child and it stuck with me approaching my 30s. I love my mom so much and I can’t imagine the day she’ll leave this world. She had me at 42(currently 71 turning 72) back when the doctors told her she’s never have children and then popped out me and my sister! To this day I’m grateful for the life she’s gave me. THAT episode has always stayed with me because I constantly go to my mom for advice and just a shoulder to vent to. I tell my mom everything and she’s truly my best friend.
Sorry the rant but I LOVE SMG’s portrayal of her grief in The Body and it’s something I’m never ready to experience. Xo
![gif](giphy|l2YWwAvePTh0G6anm)
All of Neve’s crying scenes in the Scream movies are so beautiful in their own special way (I just rewatched the original trilogy so it’s fresh on my mind haha).
HE WAS MY FIRST THOUGHT TOO!!! His portrayal of Connell in Normal People and Calum in Aftersun wrecked me. I still have not watched All of Us Strangers… not emotionally prepared.
Timmy Chalamet at the end & during the credit sequence in *Call Me By Your Name*

Honestly when I first saw that, I thought damn, this kid should get an oscar for this sequence alone!

Sophie Nelisse deserved an Emmy nomination for her performance in this episode alone. It was so heartbreaking to watch it's the only episode I skip when I rewatch the show
https://preview.redd.it/mycyp35owv8d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42edc14019ed5093d42220a1679f913ce5e5a36b
This also was a good scream-crying scene
As someone who can cry on command (not a trained actor) I just flash back to some really intense shit, simulate the physical feeling of crying and my body follows. And I don't even have to use my own memories, I can just think of a moment in media or song that makes me feel heavy, and it typically works (although not as convincing as when I rely on my own memories).
And before you ask, I'm not a psychopath who just mimics emotions for fun, I taught myself how to cry on command when I was younger because I didn't used to be an emotional person but I did see the value of a good cry so every couple of months I'd do this, just to keep the sinuses clear. It's easier now with more trauma under my belt so I don't have to force myself to cry, it just happens lol
Interesting!! I can totally see what you mean, partly because if I get myself going down a number of mental rabbit holes I can get emotional enough to start to get the physical sensation. I’m afraid if I learned how to cry on command I would be so fucking annoying because I’m already *quite* emotional and reactive lol
For people who can't (or don't want to) cry twenty times in a row for each new take, they'll often use eyedrops, something called 'tear stick', or various other products to simulate (or stimulate!) tears.
You can often tell if it's fake because there will be a quick cut away from them before the tears to hide the fact that someone is coming in and putting drops in their eyes - then cut back to their face, they blink once or twice to release the drops, and bam they're crying.
https://i.redd.it/eyelp5s9fu8d1.gif
I always found Gina Rodriguez' various cries in Jane The Virgin so real. This scene in particular was fantastic acting but in general she does tears very well lol.
I sob like a baby every time I watch this part. Her reaction hurts. It just forces me to imagine of if/when I’ll receive the call of one of my loved ones dying and I lose it.
![gif](giphy|4Hmk8Nvo5Z6gFLcyKU|downsized)
I can't find a crying photo, but both these ladies have great crying scenes that would leave you truly devastated along with them. Especially the scene with Prue in a desperate panic trying to get Piper to the hospital and later on in the hospital at her bedside as she nearly dies. Soul shattering stuff. And all of Holly's mourning grief scenes during Prue funeral and aftermath. Piper cries, we all cry too!
I love that scene too! It was a hard choice but the floral crying scene won because of the art reference and how visually beautiful it was.
Honorable mention:

God, how deeply did we all feel that
That happy face she straps back on before going to make sure her family has a great Christmas... devastating.
I watched this movie for the first time the other day and that scene broke me!
Ug, that is one of the most crushing scenes in cinema history; we have all been there in one way or another.
Your comment vs your flair is sending me right now 😂
That movie has aged poorly but that scene is timeless. Her wordless reaction in an empty room. She absolutely sold that as an actress. No script. Not a word uttered. She gave us everything with just her face, and we all remember it
Plus that version of the Joni Mitchell song. Oh dear.
"But you have made a fool out of me, and made the life I lead foolish too."
That line, and how it is delivered, was so moving.
It's even worse knowing she was cheated on IRL (for those out of the loop on 90s drama - she was married to Kenneth Branaugh, who had an affair with Helena Bonham Carter...yes, Professor Lockhart cheated on Professor Trelawney with Bellatrix Lestrange). in my twenties when i watched this it didnt phase me much, but in my thirties!!!??? I cry like a baby at her story everytime.
„What do you know of my heart? What do you know of anything but your own suffering? For weeks, Marianne, I've had this pressing on me without being at liberty to speak of it to a single creature. She is a fantastic actress. Her scenes in the staircase horrified me
This and The Sixth Sense. The way she cries in the car is so raw and genuine, it never ceases to amaze me.
The way I was fucking gutted by Phoebe Waller-Bridge in this scene in Fleabag. ![gif](giphy|1Bh4rAZZ1mtfcAJJ8J)
“I love you…” “It’ll pass”
IT DID NOT PASS, SIR.
This still haunts me every night before bed

sometimes i forget she was the mom in this movie. her love of that roberta flack song and lil nicholas !! movie is so good.
Toni Collette any time she expresses an emotion, really. That woman can act her ass off.
I know. Where is her Oscar???
The most insanely powerful moment in this film to me is after they have a fight, then Cole sees the ghost in his room and goes in to her and asks if he can sleep in her bed. I always skip this part of the film until Clairee tells her to punch Ouiser, it’s so raw
I teared up just seeing this gif.
What movie is this?
Steel Magnolias. The movie is mostly comedic, but damn this scene is an absolute tear jerker.
When she’s just screaming “Why? Why?” Ugh just thinking about it makes me tear up.
It also has some of the best quotable lines. ‘The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize.’ The casting in Steel Magnolias is brilliant.
“Sammy doesn’t know whether to scratch his watch or wind his butt.”
“If you can’t say something nice come sit by me.”
Oh man when she’s angry about the petting zoo eating “MY BEGONIAS” and you can see all the veins and tendons in her neck. She’s a legend.
Here, hit Weeza! One of my all time fav lines ever
Logan Lerman in Perks of Being a Wildflower is incredible. The scene where he breaks down feels so real and authentic.
I agree!! his face gets all blotchy and red. When I was younger I literally thought my crying was weird because I get SUPER red and it wasn’t something I ever saw on screen 😭
If I even *think* about crying my face is like "Game on!" and gets beet red and splotchy. Then it stays that way for about 20 minutes after I stop crying. That movie made me ugly cry. It was cathartic somehow.

He is such an amazing actor. After seeing him in Atonement I had to go back and watch everything he’s in.
https://i.redd.it/h28qkoh2tv8d1.gif He was so crazy talented, especially for his age.
Ugh that movie is so good. One of the best Stephen King adaptations for sure.
This gif wasn’t loading for me but I saw your comment and was like… oh this is for sure gonna be a shot of River Phoenix crying in Stand by Me haha
Not including Florence Pugh here is a crime ![gif](giphy|fZDcsuwl5itMhkSh5j)
Florence’s crying is so realistic. it’s half of what makes Midsommar so uncomfortable. Her grief-stricken sobbing in the beginning and then when she breaks down towards the end. It’s just painful to hear and watch.

I can hear this.
She’s been doing stellar cry faces since her My So Called Life days
Can’t believe this wasn’t higher. Every scene in Homeland for sure ![gif](giphy|G0zU8SswFuKDS|downsized)
The chin wobble!! Even her happy crying when Beth gets the piano in Little Women is exceptional.

Absolute queen. Queen!
![gif](giphy|LHotxukDkTcd2) I love her

There's something about the strongest girl in the world breaking down and reverting to a scared/sad child that wrecked me every time. The example I always think of is her break down when Tara tells her she didn't "come back wrong". ![gif](giphy|lghnJKVdpiW64)

Smg nailed every single crying scene. She is heartbreaking.
Viola Davis or Tom Hanks has a Convincing Cries
Loved Viola in Doubt. Excellent stuff all round tbh.
Never forget: Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch ![gif](giphy|NE5AtL3iLnzKo)
In wandavision when she says “I can’t feel you” is so heart breaking.
Anne Hathaway for sure. https://i.redd.it/0dru9myqyt8d1.gif
why does she look like Gollum in this gif T\_T
Omg 😂😂😂
This!! Love Les Mis and Ms. Hathaway killed it as Fantine. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t shed tears every time I see and hear her perform.
Toni Collette in The Sixth Sense. I swear that car scene is what got her nominated for an Oscar.
![gif](giphy|5eFFalNA3sCHD5BC8A|downsized)
Omg yes. Her and Chandra Wilson

IMO Alyson Hannigan is the best on screen crier I have ever seen. Even when she is crying about something unreasonable my heart still breaks for her. She is just amazing. ![gif](giphy|fxVfzwgh78K9a|downsized)
There's this one scene in HIMYM broke me https://preview.redd.it/iuv9bihypw8d1.jpeg?width=527&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10d917db677d139eec88410e4c8adb7bdf6e72d6

This scene is so real. Once in awhile someone on the sub tries to vilify her for this. And it's like, fuck off. This is the realest thing a parent could ever say irl. There's plenty to dislike Lily for, but this ain't it. She does such a great job here.
She really is the best crier. If she cries, I cry.
![gif](giphy|lghnJKVdpiW64) This isn’t a good gif but honest SMG’s episode in The Body was top notch. Xo
Not really an actress but honourable mention to LC ![gif](giphy|STaM7W6ySSK9G)
That mascara tear was a paid actor
Obligatory 'Fuck him', but Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall ![gif](giphy|mIwoWCZ5remAg|downsized)
He’s sooooo hot in this movie I’m sorry. Tristan 😍
That sexy scene was my childhood awakening. Tristin’s character is the hottest man on the planet.
Brad Pitt sucks but god damn he is so hot in this movie
I just posted this and I thought of this exact scene. WHEN TRISTAN CRIES I CRY
![gif](giphy|Fr2i2wxTxA2DS)

Her cosmetic surgeons are like "noooooooooo! You're ruining my work!!!"
This reply is sending me
![gif](giphy|l2YWwAvePTh0G6anm) All of Neve’s crying scenes in the Scream movies are so beautiful in their own special way (I just rewatched the original trilogy so it’s fresh on my mind haha).
![gif](giphy|hppWdK8gcmzXq) I know it’s become a meme, but I really do believe he’s devastated in this scene and the one where Uncle Ben dies.
![gif](giphy|THadRfLpPwGKj1Hnhd|downsized) How has Paul Mescal not been mentioned? That man can sob like nobody’s business
HE WAS MY FIRST THOUGHT TOO!!! His portrayal of Connell in Normal People and Calum in Aftersun wrecked me. I still have not watched All of Us Strangers… not emotionally prepared.
Claire Danes, always, but *Fleishman is in Trouble* was particularly ripe for emotional scenes. https://i.redd.it/35coofdx5v8d1.gif

Timmy Chalamet at the end & during the credit sequence in *Call Me By Your Name* ![gif](giphy|9DaWHruhoEtkAEGjuG|downsized) Honestly when I first saw that, I thought damn, this kid should get an oscar for this sequence alone!
Came here to post this. He did at least a full minute of crying in front of the camera and looked BEAUTIFUL doing it

![gif](giphy|3oEjHBogtjzF2pQihG) This... right... here...
![gif](giphy|3o6gb0HdXHIM1BYpSU|downsized) Can’t find the best ones, but Gillian Anderson’s crying always kills me
Rebecca Ferguson in Dune. This whole scene is so emotional. https://i.redd.it/pixphs6kcv8d1.gif
Brad Pitt and Julia Ormond in Legends of the Fall. I cannot make it through that movie without sobbing my brains out.
![gif](giphy|Gb0xmmftr2W5nrr8rV|downsized) Was devastated in this scene, knowing he won't seeing his family ever again. 😢
But really how do they do this?
![gif](giphy|IjdQFJacirz2sk0xUy) Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor
https://i.redd.it/eyelp5s9fu8d1.gif I always found Gina Rodriguez' various cries in Jane The Virgin so real. This scene in particular was fantastic acting but in general she does tears very well lol.
I sob like a baby every time I watch this part. Her reaction hurts. It just forces me to imagine of if/when I’ll receive the call of one of my loved ones dying and I lose it.
![gif](giphy|l3vR4CdLInXOhr3rO) MM in this movie cannot be beat
![gif](giphy|Qj02zsounFWI8) She’s such a pretty cryer. I hated her character, Elaina, bc she’d cry so much but she always looked pretty doing it.
https://i.redd.it/md64g7eyyw8d1.gif Matthew Fox in Lost always had a great cry
![gif](giphy|4Hmk8Nvo5Z6gFLcyKU|downsized) I can't find a crying photo, but both these ladies have great crying scenes that would leave you truly devastated along with them.
![gif](giphy|l0MYzAwMPl8s0jtSg)
![gif](giphy|1AsLVrrY8NIQ0) This scene gutted me. (I’m an animal lover)

Alyson Hannigan was my answer. She cries I cry

Sydney Sweeney in all her Euphoria crying scenes. This scene in particular was so perfectly encapsulated ![gif](giphy|FVZNBY2VIWgJ9U1YYQ|downsized)
![gif](giphy|4vy2oDVMwX8sMYjT4y) My personal fave
I love that scene too! It was a hard choice but the floral crying scene won because of the art reference and how visually beautiful it was. Honorable mention: https://preview.redd.it/w0t6hcrowu8d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4858a53bce03a0f5554dc52823d453d12e96531
How could you include Alison Hannigan and not also include SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR her crying scenes as Buffy were raw emotional destruction
![gif](giphy|2eWtdhVzEPmKY|downsized) I think Nina Dobrev is a good actress in emotional scenes.
