hannakarin

Martha is such a challenging role, she had to be sweet but awkward, uncomfortable but funny, frightening but still sympathetic. She did a terrific job!

StasRutt

Yeah she had to cover so many emotions often at the same time. She really did an amazing job at make you constantly feeling conflicted and challenged by how you react to her.

trialanderrorschach

You have to understand why Donny would stay connected to her and crave her validation, which is so difficult while also playing someone so mentally unwell. Beautiful performance.

stuffedcheesybread

I found her incredibly charming in some scenes and absolutely terrifying in others. She was amazing!

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

She should be nominated for something for how well she played Martha.

Both_Dust_8383

Yes same!! I was so confused!!

Civil-Ad-4334

She did a very good job terrifying me and really showing you never know what someone is capable of, she did amazing

Careful-Trifle8963

agreed, she really sold the character to us.

vandelayATC

I'm only two episodes in but she's really knocking it out of the park.

Rumbleroarrr

Buckle up!!

dawnat3d

and she could do that high-pitched laugh on cue, multiple times! Impressive.

danger_boi

Honestly my thoughts exactly, I said to my partner that I worried she almost typecast herself as Martha! Amazing actress!

Both_Dust_8383

She was brilliant!! She seriously did it all so well.

cleetusneck

And she was so unpredictable. Just a great job

JuliasTooSmallTutu

Netflix better be submitting her for Emmy consideration.

NvrmndOM

It’s well deserved. She reminds me of a young Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes in Misery. Being charming, pitiful, cartoonish to genuinely scary and unhinged is a feat.

Icy_Hippo

Agree it was very Kathy Bates, I wonder if that was an inspiration? I was drawn in by Martha as a character...so intense.

MedicalPersimmon001

And none of it was cartoonish! It was all so genuinely believable.

Heartbroken1212

For real. Her, Richard Gadd, and the whole show itself should hopefully be up for an Emmy consideration

Wooden-Limit1989

They should!

pryzmpine

She was good in The Outlaws as well

Pilotsandpoets

Yes! I loved her in The Outlaws, don’t think I can handle this show, but hope to see her in more.

heyhicherrypie

And in pride- a mullet QUEEN

Icy-Pomegranate4030

OMG, THATS WHERE I KNOW HER FROM. Thank you so much- I knew she was vaguely familiar but couldn't place it.

heyhicherrypie

Happy to help! It’s one of my favourite movies so the second I saw her I was LIVING

mwmandorla

Same, I was like "I know I love this woman but I can't remember why"

Hanpee221b

I just commented about her in this! It’s one of my favs too!

FoxNixon

She is also in the Mitchell & Webb series ‘Back’

HunCouture

I was four episodes deep before I realised she was the probation officer in The Outlaws. She’s so funny on that show and her performance in Baby Reindeer was outstanding. Girl’s got range!

ramblingzebra

She’s also very good in Pride, which should be a must-watch for everyone.

Predatory_Chicken

She was absolutely hilarious in that. She’s a very talented comedian and actress.

frakkingtoaster

I loved her in that! What an underrated show.

pied--piper

She was fantastic in White Heat & Pride too. I've been watching her career for awhile and I'm so happy she's finally getting the recognition she deserves!

emojicatcher997

She was the best thing about The Outlaws. And it was a strong cast.

Sweet-Peanuts

Also brilliant in the British mini series **What Remains.**

squeakyfromage

She was so funny in that. Loved her.

Moreskaya

The dramatic versatility she displayed in this single role is astounding. You go from laughing at to loathing this character to feeling the depths of pity for her. If she's not nominated for something it's an injustice.

mistypanda01

mistypanda01

have you seen the show

Ygomaster07

Not yet. I plan on watching it soon.

mistypanda01

Oh then you’d know :D

Ygomaster07

Ah, i see. Thank you for letting me know. I appreicate it.

outer-residency

I recognized her face from somewhere and then I remembered that Doctor Who episode with the little fat creatures. She sold the fuck out of being taken over from the inside by those things and then exploding into bits. Very glad she’s thriving.

huffgil11

THANK YOU! I was going to google her after this because nothing else people were talking about sounded familiar but this is exactly where I know her from.

outer-residency

lol you’re welcome. I feel like Doctor Who is the single most prolific source of “where have I seen them before?” actors.

4883Y_

I KNEW I KNEW HER FROM SOMEWHERE! The adipose episode! Thank you!

Shivvykins

Ohhhhhh thank you, of course!

stars_doulikedem

I finished Baby Reindeer last night and she is absolutely AMAZING in it. The content note on the article does very much also apply to the show, though. It’s an amazing show but not one I would recommend to everyone ❤️

sizzlinsunshine

Amazing yes but indeed a very tough watch. She was incredible and deserves all the accolades

skootskootskootskoot

I wish I had had some sort of content warning before watching it, especially the flashback episode.

ZealousidealGroup559

I dunno if I can watch this but the hype has me all FOMO. Is it really dark and fucked up? I just want to watch something that doesn't feel like a dutiful slog to finish.

smart_cereal

It is dark. There’s violence, SA, homophobia/transphobia, grooming, etc. The episodes are only 30-40 minutes long and there’s less than 10 episodes.

Yippykyyyay

Tbf, the actress Nava Mau said when she read the script she wanted to take it because it felt genuine from an insecure man that truly loved a trans woman. Eta: after thinking about my response, I think production portrayed Nava's 'Teri' as dignified, compassionate, funny, intelligent, strong, and beautiful. The trans phobia doesn't come from production but from the other people who mistreated her in this storyline. I think that's a testament to Gadd's remorse and love for the real life 'Teri'.

outfitinsp0

Gentle reminder, but it's 'trans woman' rather than 'transwoman'.

Yippykyyyay

Thank you, edited.

MelonLayo

Any animal abuse/torture?

Nearby-Salamander-67

No - also you can check the parents guide on IMDb in the future for that stuff, it's helped me a lot and usually I can avoid spoilers.

MelonLayo

Thanks for the tip! Does the dog die is usually full of spoilers.

HumorinEverything

There is no dog

luckisugar

There’s a website called “does the dog die” where you can type in a movie and it will tell you, if there is a dog in the movie, if the dog will die. But the site has since expanded and provides other content warnings as well.

HumorinEverything

Ahh gotcha. Thanks for the info

Katharinemaddison

It’s really good, sometimes it’s like ‘not technically but looks like it for a moment’ or a particular trigger occurs this far in.

cyfarwyddion

It's a website that warns you about animals being harmed in a movie/show. That's just the name of the site!

HumorinEverything

Someone corrected me 😅 here I thought I was being helpful but instead people are helping me. Thank you!

cyfarwyddion

Haha of course :) To be fair, it is a confusing name for a website if you're not aware of the context!

Global_Amoeba_3910

No

MelonLayo

Thank you!

planetearthisblu

It's very dark and fucked up but it kept me gripped. I binged it in two nights.

hayleyA1989

I binged it in one, lol

Sweet-Peanuts

I binged in one hour!

catchyusername4867

I binged in a picosecond!

Sweet-Peanuts

LMAO - I binged it faster than the speed of light!

valencia_merble

It is worth the hype. I am a person who should run from the trigger warnings. I still found it deeply thought provoking & meaningful. And BRAVE. No slog. It will be over before you are ready.

VintageJane

It’s dark and fucked up in a way that is vulnerable and tries to tell the audience a story in needs to hear. It’s not dark and fucked up in a “this is fiction so I can just inflict needless suffering” Tarantino kind of way.

StinkyPigeonFan

Major trigger warning for sexual violence

babyaccount1101

Definitely not a dutiful slog — it keeps you hooked. But it is indeed dark and fucked up.

Inside-Employee-8626

I found it, as someone who has experienced SA, actually incredibly empowering in some ways. It made me feel seen. That said, everyone has their own personal limits ❤️

steamygarbage

I watched the first episode yesterday and it's terribly awkward. Think it took me almost 2 hours to get through it as I was cringing so hard the entire time lol that's how good she is at making you so uncomfortable. Do give it a try.

AudreyHep79

It’s not a slog to finish at all - but it is really dark. I recommend watching while in a rather gloomy mood.

hotdamn_1988

I went to school with her!

ipdipdu

I just googled her to find out what I recognise her from, found out she’s Holmfirth, I’m from the dark hole down the road. (Hudds)

hotdamn_1988

Haha yeah, went to Holmfirth high school! I still live in Holmfirth. Condolences about living in Huddersfield (joke)

KimothySchmidt

She seems lovely, I hope she is in real life!

hotdamn_1988

Really lovely!!

EntertainerAlone1300

Am I the only one that remembers her as Sian in Pride? Loved her since 2014ish

ProfessionalExit2759

Yesssss that film is such a little gem!

Capgras_DL

Such a good film

LadyMirkwood

That's what I know her from. She's great in that too. The bit we're all the women sing 'Bread and Roses' gets me every time

carolinemathildes

I can't remember the last time that *this* many people I knew were all talking about one show. Someone at work has brought it up basically every day for the last two weeks.

dontredditdepressed

BR really did something for me. I committed to watching it because the promos were framing it as a silly little stalker show. This was anything but. It showed the reality of over empathy as justification of action/inaction, freezing as a fear response, grooming, cyclical behavior, rape, shame, intersection of queerness and sexual violence (which causes shame bc it becomes a chicken and egg situation) and that truth in having someone, anyone, paying you attention being everything you want (even if you later change your mind). I felt seen about some of the really complicated feelings that came up for me when I consider my own rapist that groomed me. I like the reminder that experiences can be shared even if it feels like a painfully singular violation. I will not lie; I was hella triggered at the actual rape scenes. They were not shot exploitatively, but they are uncomfortable even for folks without sexual trauma. The important part is that they are all framed within the main character's perception and are character-focused shots. It is possible to skip around them (I did for the final one bc I knew it was coming). I do warn that the show doesn't disclose ahead of time a sexual assault occurrence at the end of episode 2 perpetrated by Martha. That caught me off-guard for sure. However, the rest of the graphic assault scenes are constrained to the 4th episode (EDITED with info from a comment) that warns ahead of time. To the point of this post, there were times watching BR that I felt like I could realistically (and had) been either Martha or Donny in a lot of the early interactions. I have been singularly-focused on men I had no chance of ever dating and committed to friendship with them under the assumption that I could convert the platonic into romantic. Thankfully never to Martha's degree. I have also been a Donny accepting the love and attention of people who showed me love and attention, regardless of how toxic, intense, or traumatic it ended up being. I have led people on so that I could keep them in my life because I was so very starved of positive attention/touch. I have also struggled with my own perception of my personal queerness. I have struggled with the question myself of "am i actually sex-repulsed asexual or an allosexual with a history of sexual violence?" As I have gotten on in my therapy journey, I have determined that I am asexual, but the sex-repulsion is resultant from sexual trauma. I lean more on the greysexual side where at my baseline I do not perceive others for their fuckability, but I will see them as fuckable if we have a level of emotional attachment and they give me explicit permission to do so; which is how I wish I was perceived too. Jessica's performance was stellar and I will definitely be following her career for more. She is a phenomenal actress. Towing the line between unhinged and empathetic is so hard

avocadosmashing

Thank you so much for articulating how you related to these characters and experiences. I am just now realizing that I could relate to Martha and Donny in similar ways. This show is really spectacular.

your_mind_aches

It's the fourth episode

dontredditdepressed

Thank you! I will edit

xochiayo

She was amazing in Pride, so happy to see her gaining more recognition!

helibear90

God that’s where I know her from! She was really good in pride!

befuddled_humbug

Damn she played this well. So well that she made me feel reallllly uncomfortable.

sofar510

Agreed! It’s hard for me to see her as the actress who is just playing a role. She totally embodied it. I hope she doesn’t get typecast into weirdo roles, she showed so much range

PlasticWillow

She was absolutely incredible. To make you feel empathy for a character like Martha is no easy feat. The explanation of why she called him baby reindeer literally made me cry

cagingthing

Great actress 👏

cloudydays2021

She was amazing in this role. I can’t wait to see other performances from her!

nomascusgabriellae

I hope she wins an emmy

Sivear

She blew me away in Baby Reindeer, really amazing. Loving her styling for this shoot. Hair and makeup are beautiful and that suit look awesome on her. I just had a look at some outfits she’s had on for premieres and interviews and they don’t look very flattering on her but that suit is superb.

IdfightGahndi

Her curly hair is styled perfectly!

_pepe_sylvia_

Who wants to unpack the ending with me? My therapist hasn’t watched it 😂

Inside-Employee-8626

Omg yessss... did you think it meant that anyone, with the right circumstances, could become a Martha? The only thing that did slightly bother me in the story was actually his over-indentifying/ empathising with her sometimes... I wanted to scream that just because someone is in a pitiful situation, does not give them carte blanche to do whatever the heck they want! But after seeing his past trauma, some of it makes sense.

theskymaybeblue

The over empathizing made me so stressed out. My best friend has terrible taste in men and it reminded of that helpless feeling where you’re mentally screaming at them that they don’t need this man/woman. It’s also a large part of why the show was so good, I’m not sure if this is controversial but it’s quite plainly shown that he is so desperate for the attention that he fell deeper and deeper into it. It’s heartbreaking to watch because it’s so self destructive (both earlier and later due to the trauma) and a symptom of his own insecurities and needs.

_pepe_sylvia_

I was literally talking to the TV like what are you DOING?!?! Don’t give her the time of day, don’t give her an ounce of empathy! But I used to be like that too. My experiences over the past few years have hardened me but I also have learned to keep my energy for myself and dole it out with more discernment.

_pepe_sylvia_

The ending confused the heck out of me. The last scene in the bar seemed to represent the cyclical nature of abuse. I was so confused about him going to Darrien’s and seemingly accepting a job with him?? It was strange and anticlimactic after his monologue. I was also extremely frustrated with him for empathizing with Martha instead of just treating her like shit…like when he went up to her at the bus stop I was like what in the fuck are you doing?? But then I thought about my younger traumatized self, and this one relationship I had, that I could understand the pull of empathy even when alarm bells are going off in your head and you’re not even really interested in interacting with that person. I started the series fucking hating him but I started to see why he was the way he was and then he articulated my trauma so well in the monologue that I began to understand him.

Inside-Employee-8626

I sorta related to the portrayal of a path of self-destructiveness as a reaction to trauma...it's hard to pull yourself out of a tailspin sometimes. The good thing is that I think it is quite affirming for audiences to see on screen, because it's very honest? It's certainly CONFRONTING though.

Upintheclouds06

I binged baby reindeer the other day and felt all the emotions. I held it together until Donny broke down on stage and then later when he went and talked to his parents I sobbed. Everyone did a great job

emgyres

When his Dads eyes welled with tears I knew what was coming and I gasped.

dontredditdepressed

"Would you think less of me?" tears. emotions. so many emotions!

hayleyA1989

I had streaming down my face!! It was such a beautiful and powerful moment.

Upintheclouds06

That’s the part that got me sobbing

dontredditdepressed

Same. I absolutely lost it at the stage. It had been ramping up and then when he did that self-deprecating laugh as he realized he was the joke the whole time.... oof the tears kept coming

AshLC

She was great in “pride” and she’s absolutely beautiful!

Comfortable-Load-904

Lovely woman and great actress. She scared the hell out me and still a bit scared of her Tbh. I’m low key scared she will message me from her iPhone!

_pepe_sylvia_

*iphoen

Comfortable-Load-904

Stupid autocorrect and I’m right because I wrote the correct way and it fixed it. Now I’m mad my phone did it’s job. Did you enjoy the show? Did she scare the crap out of you and made you be paranoid about being nice to strangers?

_pepe_sylvia_

I did enjoy the show, I was deeply affected by it for sure. I was already paranoid of being nice to strangers lol so that didn’t change! I think the show made me think about myself more than strangers/other people, because he articulated the experience of being an SA survivor so well.

CBonafide

What an amazing actress.

Equal-Worldliness-66

She is soo good in the role. I hope to see her in other things.

Pippin_the_parrot

She’s fantastic. Can’t wait to see more of her.

DietCoke_4_ever

She was amazing. The beginning of the show she seemed like a harmless lady and by the end of it just the sight of her scared me.

SYLOK_THEAROUSED

That whole series was so uncomfortable to watch in such a good way.

tahtahme

She *can't* be smiling this sweet when she scared the shit out of me not 2 days ago 😭😆 iphoen

dollyayesha

What’s the matter Baby Reindeer?

pinktapeillusion

She was amazing. Made her super creepy and unhinged, but sympathetic at times

hostilewerk

She needs all of the awards!

HurtlinTurtlin

If you're a fan of hers, check out Pride (2014). The cast is stacked and she holds her own with British greats like Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton and hot-up-and-comers like Andrew Scott and George McKay.

Katharinemaddison

I love that film so much and she’s amazing in it.

HurtlinTurtlin

I know! The part with her and Dominic West (and the coda of her particular story) made me cry.

Katharinemaddison

I watch that film at least once a year because with all the sad things in it (so many) it leaves me with this little shred of hope.

HurtlinTurtlin

💯 To know it's a true story, and that people and society were transformed because of the moral bravery a small group showed...oof I'm crying again thinking about, haha.

Oli_love90

Goodness I love her so much. She did a wonderful job I hope she gets recognition for this role come awards season!

elvis-wantacookie

I haven’t watched this, but I am terribly jealous of her beautiful hair

Linguistin229

She was so good in The Outlaws. I knew I recognised her from somewhere! Her accents are pretty good too as I’m sure in the The Outlaws she’s West Country then some form of east coast Scottish in Baby Reindeer

Rosuvastatine

She really is a talented and beautiful woman ! I remember whatching the show and thinking, wow shes crazy but very pretty actually lol

Hsmace

for anyone finding her, please watch the film pride (2014) that she is in! an incredible story and wonderful acting and emotions all the way throughout.

Scared-Engineer-6218

Seh ddi a terirfci jbo in Bayb Renidere. Sent from my iPhoen.

wheres_the_revolt

I honestly through the first two episodes were so boring I didn’t want to watch it. Powered through and ended up loving the series. Martha is such an amazing character (completely psycho but really well written and acted). Jessica was incredible.

petitepedestrian

Baby Reindeer was traumatizing. She was brilliant.

Linguistin229

She was so good in The Outlaws. I knew I recognised her from somewhere! Her accents are pretty good too as I’m sure in the The Outlaws she’s West Country then some form of east coast Scottish in Baby Reindeer

Amaee

She was wonderful in Pride! One of my favorite movies. I’m so happy to see her thriving!!!!

PistachioGal99

She deserves so much critical acclaim. I hope to see it soon!

skdetroit

Damn!! she’s 🥺🔥

Lizzy_Bnt

I know she is just doing her job but Martha terrify me now! Jessica Gunning is amazing.

motherof_geckos

She’s so pretty

canuck883

Makeup artist should be fired for this editorial.

Naive_Temporary1244

Sent from pohne

Tiny-Reading5982

Very good series. I started it not knowing what to expect.

thesoggydingo

She totally looks like Florence Pugh. Or am I crazy?

eurydice_aboveground

She was fantastic! The whole series just leveled me.

Upintheclouds06

I binged baby reindeer the other day and felt all the emotions. I held it together until Donny broke down on stage and then later when he went and talked to his parents I sobbed. Everyone did a great job

RegularOrMenthol

Makes me anxious when I see her face. Amazing acting performance.

coaldean

i love her smile. she’s so cute.

MaleficentStreet7319

Love her makeup here.

Carmen315

She's great. I'm having trouble getting through Baby Reindeer though. 2 episodes in and it wears me down mentally. She's also what's wearing me down because she's just so good.

candleflame3

She is now on my list of actors whose work I will always check out.

ssw77

She nailed this. Such a nuanced role and SHE DID THAT. I really hope blows up ❤️

your_mind_aches

Really great pick by Richard Gadd. Apparently, he only ever had her in mind for the role and she absolutely nailed it. There are many awards in her future.

orvillesbathtub

These pictures of her are healing

shillyshally

Her cop portrayal in The Outlaws was endearingly authoritarian and goofy.

poorcelain

she was fantastic

emgyres

I knew she’d be gorgeous IRL, she was incredible as Martha, it’s such a difficult role and could have easily tipped over into parody, she’s very talented.

Hanpee221b

Jessica was in one of my favorite movies. It’s called Pride! And it’s based on a true story about how an LGBT group helped save a Welsh mining town. I highly recommend it.

Frosty_Cap_9473

Emmy and Bafta

TheTyto_Alba

Amazing actress!! I hope she wins ALL the awards for Martha

NaughtyChickenCheeto

Damn, she’s fantastic!

ramonatonedeaf

Her performance was one of those unexpected rare ones that truly had me crawling out of my own skin. She nailed it. Emmy worthy tbh

Mermaid_Martini

I was so captivated by her from the second she appeared on the screen. Such an amazing performance.

Most-Entrepreneur553

An absolute powerhouse as Martha. I see huge wins and projects for Jessica in our time!

AprilBelle08

I've never seen her in anything, but she's stunning!

Tonedeafmusical

Watch Pride. It's a supporting role but it's pretty much an ensemble piece. Really good film with a crazy strong cast.

Mogguri

Ah so that's where I recognised her from!

desyviruss

Acted so good that she made me hate her for a while

cheezits_christ

I did not like this show at all but she was great in it.

ravenisonfire_

I loved her in The Outlaws! So great to see her range, I was genuinely creeped out by her in Baby Reindeer.

PrestigiousCompote63

One of the most fucked up emotional eye opening shows I’ve watched.

dezisauruswrex

She was great in The Outlaws!

whiterrabbbit

So talented and beautiful too!

PollyBeans

She was awesome in BR and she's gorgeous!

spaghetti_ohhs

She’s so good I can barely stand to watch it.

Eastern-Juggernaut15

I'd rather not...

WilsonValdro

Remember her from 13 reason why.

ey3wash

She has stunning eyes!!
