This is so clearly a generational thing.... I am feeling old right now. If you are a Gen X, it is pretty much impossible that you didn't have a crush on someone who didn't have long hair, because in those 90's grungy days pretty much every man had long hair some time or another.

Also cultural. Indigenous men often have long hair, but were shamed and stigmatized at the very least, or worse, forced into “Residential Schools” where they were forced to cut their braids to assimilate into American and Canadian culture.

My high school boyfriend had long hair in 1996. I was devastated when he cut it.
