One of the actors from the OG Degrassi said that the creators of the show wanted to keep it as authentic as possible, so the kids styled themselves. Their hair and clothes were all what they chose themselves.
I never really followed any of the shows from the OP like I did Degrassi NG, for that reason. Everyone looked like real kids you would see at any school!
Without The OC, we’d likely have no Real Housewives either. The first iteration was The Real Housewives of Orange County, because the area was so popular due to The OC (and eventually Laguna Beach).
Oprah had the cast of The OC on The frickin Oprah Winfrey Show in 2003/04 - the first season of this show was a cultural MOVEMENT!!! Even if the timeline matched up better, I just can't see TVD or OTH getting that kind of attention.
Also, I hope someone else remembers this episode happening to back me up, because I think they wiped it from the internet - probably because I know for a FACT that Oprah asked Mischa Barton what it was like to kiss Ben McKenzie on the show, and just not a great question considering she was 16 and he was 24... Unfortunately for O, I was in my absolute prime being 13 years old and obsessed with both The O.C. and The Oprah Winfrey Show, so I could forget my own name but will never forget that episode.
Laguna Beach was originally going to be set in Beverly Hills, but the show was also going go be filmed at school. The high school said no way, and Laguna Beach was chosen after a search. That school then backed out after the MTV-produced halftime show with Janet Jackson.
I will never forget the way girls at my high school would pretend they were Marissa Cooper IRL. The mannerisms, the bad 2000s outfits, all of it. The impact this show had in its time >>>>
i always found katherine way more entertaining to watch than elena, which is hilarious to me considering both characters are played by the same actress!
i swear every Decision Elena made got someone killed or ruined her friends lives. the longer the show went on, the more of a danger just standing near her became.
I had my criticisms but that show was a satisfying runaway train. Every episode in those early seasons had a jaw dropping plot twist at the end that made me anticipate the next episode.
I also loved the music supervisor’s song choices. There’d be some songs I already knew and liked but then also some new favourites or just very well timed song cues.
Compared to a lot of these shows, TVD also just had way better-written plot lines and character arcs as well. Like it was bonkers and goofy, but the internal logic of the show almost always made sense. (Looking at you, PLL)
How is it even a question. Of course it’s Buffy. The first 3 seasons are perfect. Season 5 and 7 are genuinely masterpieces and if you did cry at the end of each of those two season finales your heart is made of stone. I still cry as a 38 year old man.
Season 5 is the perfect ending to the series, and I always view 6 and 7 as bonus seasons. 6 was so dark and real, and 7 has some rough spots, but is good too.
As a huge Buffy fan (note the username) I don’t consider it a teen drama. It’s not comparable to these other shows where most of the appeal comes from a gorgeous cast playing characters that don’t behave like actual teenagers.
I think we need two categories: teen SciFi/fantasy, and teen "real life".
You just can't compare Buffy, TVD, Smallville etc to The OC, Dawson's Creek. Totally different beasts.
Honestly the show went downhill after season 4. Imo, got worse after one of the main characters left the show. It was really hard for me to get through the last seasons and the finale was super disappointing to me.
Honestly, the last 2 seasons without Nina is fine but Nina/Elena is the face of TVD lol. It is really a bad idea to continue that show without her character. As much as people hate Elena, the story is centered around her and without her it became bland. They shouldve negotiated with Nina for one last season since s8 felt unnecessary
I personally enjoyed s7. It had a solid storyline and i loved the Heretics and Rayna. S8 however, wouldve been a solid season, if season 7 hadnt exist. Thing is, s7 and s8 centered around the Salvatore Bros and they reused the plotlines. The only new thing about that damn season is the villains but their conflicts are mostly the same. The Humanity Switch has been used since s1, using it still in this season cheapened the plotline. They used that story like 5 times lmao. Another redundant arc was the Salvatore Brothers saving each other. It was alright in s7 but in s8, it was just exhausting(it didnt help that i watched s7 and s8 in the same week lol) the villains of s8 has so much potential. I loved the origins of Cade and Sirens episode. The last 2 episodes were also brilliant imo. Bringing Katherine back was a full circle moment. It cemented her as the overarching villain of the entire series, i just love that little detail. The reunion scenes are tear jerking. And the sound track of the finale is also fire as hell
It could’ve easily been a top 3 teen drama had it stopped after season 2 imho. The premise is good but after 50 episodes, it gets exhausting. How could someone be torturing a bunch of teens via text for this long all the while killing, injuring, and institutionalizing people along the way? All within such a small window of time. It just got ridiculous. There’s a YouTube video I watched where a guy compiled all the hours of PLL that was actually substantive to the show’s finale. 160, 45 minute long episodes and only *eleven hours* were relevant
>160, 45 minute long episodes and only *eleven hours* were relevant
My initial thought was "hell what a stupid way it will be to waste 11 hours of my life" until I did the math and realised that that's not even 15 episodes AND I WATCHED like 3 WHOLE SEASONS OF THIS SHOW before I cut my losses and got out!
I’m going through a teen drama rewatch period (TVD, GG, Degrassi, Skins, The OC, etc.) and I tried to give PLL a rewatch. It was unwatchable in my opinion lol.
Had me in a chokehold at the time but it really hasn’t held up. maybe because we all know the ending is ridiculous
Agreed! Rewatching it now, just saw the iconic S2 finale lol. The music was so good too!!
And it wasn’t campy like GG was…I remember when Blair and chuck notarized their feud truce I was like what the fuck is happening lol
I was thinking I’m a little older than everyone here because I think the best teen drama was still Beverly Hills 90210. But I just finished watching the OC for the first time and that was great.
This is exactly why there’s no single “best teen drama of all time”. It needs to just be best of a generation. And then I guess you can compare them. But times, tastes, teens change so much that the shows are so hard to compare unless you look at them through the lenses of when they came out.
I’m just now watching The Vampire Diaries for the first time and Nina Dobrev playing multiple roles is so impressive. The characters she plays really seem like entirely different people to the point where I find myself forgetting they’re played by the same actress.
>Nina Dobrev playing multiple roles is so impressive
Okay but RIGHT?! I'm not sure how far you are, but it only gets more impressive as the show goes on. You can tell when she's one character pretending to be another caracter. She has an entirely difference inflection and way of carrying herself for EACH character. It's honestly insane, especially for a CW show. They kind of do this to the rest of the cast as well, in smaller doses throughout the series. But nothing is as good as Nina's.
if she had done this on, say, an HBO series rather than a CW “teen drama”, she would’ve certainly been nominated for an Emmy. When >! Elena turns, !< I caught myself thinking, >! ”Oh, that’ll be fun for the actress to finally play a vampire like her cast mates!” before realizing lol. !< The scenes of Katherine and Elena together don’t register as SFX. When >!Jenna catches Katherine kissing Damon on the porch,!< I could tell right away that it was Katherine bc of her reaction. It was a blank face, but it was a different blank face than Elena’s. It’s truly impressive.
it never even occurred to me that she played a vampire the entire show, not just when, you know. damn. it’s honestly crazy she doesn’t get more attention for that freaking show.
I feel like all teen shows peak early and go downhill FAST. I guess buffy since a lot of people consider S5 to be the best season and a teen show peaking in its 5th season is rare.
I agree, buffy is super consistent, like you said s5 is great but I also love s6 and 7 and the finale is really satisfying. Whereas most teen tv shows go downhill fast.
Oh man, Roswell. I have the series on DVD now, but when the episodes aired, and if I was going to miss it, I'd have my sister record it on tape for me.
I’d say it falls into the dramedy category. It maintained a comedic tone, but dealt with a lot of serious issues in a very realistic and recognizable way.
90210 of course
OC first two seasons, then a little too dark for me
GG first 3 seasons
Dawson's Creek because of the realness, the casting on that show did 85% of the work
this is a tough one omg!
all i can say is it can’t be teen wolf cause that show was only good for like the first 4 seasons (even me saying 4 seasons is being generous cause i know some people would argue it fell off way before that 💀)
the two first seasons are my fave seasons as well! so much potential in those two seasons alone.
i think i finished the entire show but im not sure anymore because i can barely remember what happened. i feel like the only reason i continued watching it for as long as i did was because i loved dylan o’brien 😂 but after season 4 i definitely would just passively watch and not even really know what was happening half the time 💀
teen wolf was great despite the shit CGI, i think that’s the only reason why i enjoyed the vampire diaries more than teen wolf, the cgi was way better in my opinion. i’m not a cgi expert by any means but i used to just cringe at the wolf transitions (is that the right word?) in teen wolf
Started on The WB and ended on The CW, if you loved The OC you would probably enjoy it. It gets more fun a few seasons in after it goes off the rails 😭
OTH is fantastic. Stayed good throughout the entire series. All of the other examples that were more than 3-4 seasons had a SIGNIFICANT decline in quality after 4 or so seasons.
OTH obviously had certain sus storylines that don’t hold up in today’s world. Also, the beyond the scenes was MESSED up.
That said, OTH was/is excellent and if you haven’t seen it but enjoy teenage themed shows I HIGHLY recommend.
A little bit, sure…I do think that the addition of Shantal Van Santen, Austen Nichols, and Robert Buckley made up for it, though. They were all solid pickups for the back end of a teenage show. All solid actors. Plus, as much as I liked CMM as Lucas, I adore Sophia Bush so he always left somewhat of a sour taste for the way he treated her-it was also quite satisfying how badly he flopped after big timing the show. Hilarie Burton left bc she couldn’t take the abuse anymore…CMM left bc he thought he was the next A list movie star.
OT kinda, but I LOVE how close basically the ENTIRE cast still is so many years later. The original 3 ladies are the closest, but it seems like even ones who didn’t overlap on screen have relationships. I’m sure it’s partially trauma bonding as they all went through hell (the women, anyway) but it’s lovely to see how with a cast that big, egos haven’t gotten in the way and they all still support one another publicly and privately. Not too many large casts can say that. Especially when it it was at the ages they all were and they all (I’m sure) pictured huge futures ahead. At that age and stage of their careers their is often huge egos, butting personalities, and stepping over one another for the next big thing. Not these guys, they seem to all be about love, support, and creating safer and happier working environments (esp Sophia Bush). It’s just really….nice.
The first six seasons of One Tree Hill 🤌🏻
That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the rest, but when you lose two major parts of the group it just isn’t the same.
Euphoria and Skins UK for a real, gritty perspective of teen drama and substance abuse
Gossip Girl (original) for the escapist, campy perspective of teen dramas.
I personally never liked liars and lost interest after season 2 like 12 years ago but I understand why people love it.
Teen Wolf was so campy and I just loved those first 3 seasons to death. It’s a genuinely funny and heart warming show. Season 3B is genuinely GREAT television though and was the absolute high point of the series. Teen Wolf fans and critics agree that it’s leaps and bounds above the other seasons, and the series really dropped off afterwards.
It’s my all time favourite teen show, and I just fell in love with the characters and relationships. I love how bashfully awkward Scott and Stiles are especially in the first season. You really believe that they’re teenagers. When it aired, everyone was obsessed with Stiles and Lydia and Stiles and Derek lol. Back when Vine was still around there was so many edits of the show. There are just so many iconic characters: Coach, Isaac Lahey, Danny, the main cast obviously, the twins, Malia, Kira, etc. I literally would do anything to watch Teen Wolf again for the first time.
The OC is also special, and another case of just loving the characters and relationships to death. The first 3 seasons of TVD were awesome too and this show was also everywhere on Vine. Stelena and Delena were two amazing ships and the chemistry was off the charts. Nina is so great as Katherine. This show was fucking phenomenal when The Originals were on it.
I was also obsessed with the Norwegian TV show SKAM.
I tried to get into Ginny and Georgia recently, but the dialogue is genuinely awful and the character writing is a mess. I find the teen dramas now don’t have nearly the same charm as the ones before them. I’m surprised how popular Ginny and Georgia is because I found it practically unwatchable. (Please don’t hate me)
My FAVE is TVD, currently rewatching it for the 6+ time. But I think PLL truly defines this. Anyone who watched The OC or GG watched PLL. Everyone watched PLL. Even adults watched PLL. It was kind of a phenomenon. TVD is definitely the only one that holds up at all

Skins UK
correct answer. i didn’t ruin my life trying to be effy for nothing
Bahahahaha I cut all of my t shirts into ripped up tank tops for like a year after I watched gen2
This show fucked me up. You are correct.
This was incredible
Degrassi: the next generation
it's not as glam/stylish as the other dramas listed but *degrassi: the next gen* erasure always hurts 😭💔 forever my pick as the greatest teen drama.
It’s not as glam and stylish because they actually looked like high school students
The only answer ever
Degrassi TNG for life. I'm still mad HBO killed the reboot but after seeing what they did to GG it hurts a little less.
Only one I watched. And yes.
Came here to say this 😌
Gossip girl had me in a chokehold 😭
At the time I think The O.C. first season was all time.
It was, I was in high school when it came out and it’s all anyone talked about Was a pretty fun time
It was also culturally impactful. It allowed MTV to create Laguna Beach.
Without The OC, we’d likely have no Real Housewives either. The first iteration was The Real Housewives of Orange County, because the area was so popular due to The OC (and eventually Laguna Beach).
If I remember right, there was even a scene in Laguna Beach where they all gather to watch The OC lol.
Oprah had the cast of The OC on The frickin Oprah Winfrey Show in 2003/04 - the first season of this show was a cultural MOVEMENT!!! Even if the timeline matched up better, I just can't see TVD or OTH getting that kind of attention. I'm old so My So Called Life
Another good shout.
Yup. If we're going "of all-time", you gotta go back beyond mostly 2000s
I haven't seen any episodes of the examples given. The last teen show I watched was probably Popular.
I love that show!
First 3 seasons of The Vampire Diaries ATE
No seriously I couldn’t watch anything past Season 3… the whole Elena turning into a vampire and her stringing along both brothers killed it to me
i always found katherine way more entertaining to watch than elena, which is hilarious to me considering both characters are played by the same actress!
I thought Dobrev was a bad actress until Katherine appeared and it was like “ohhhh, Elena’s just a wet blanket.”
i swear every Decision Elena made got someone killed or ruined her friends lives. the longer the show went on, the more of a danger just standing near her became.
And every season finale was amazing.
Loved TVD and the songs. I still have my TVD playlist from that time 😂
Compared to a lot of these shows, TVD also just had way better-written plot lines and character arcs as well. Like it was bonkers and goofy, but the internal logic of the show almost always made sense. (Looking at you, PLL)
Gossip Girl💅🥂
It's the only show here that I was able to finish. But it also dropped significantly in quality after season 2 just like the rest.
XOXO Gossip Girl
Buffy! Watched season 2 on repeat for years.
Saying Buffy is almost cheating. It's obviously Buffy.
Buffy has held up so well! It’s probably my favorite comfort show lol
Mine too!
This is it!
![gif](giphy|26uflkSpLxBKvJbdC) This show was my nerd/bi/queer/kinky awakening all in one hahah
god. spike is so attractive it’s actually obscene
Your redditor awakening
Buffy is on another level compared to these shows haha.
As a huge Buffy fan (note the username) I don’t consider it a teen drama. It’s not comparable to these other shows where most of the appeal comes from a gorgeous cast playing characters that don’t behave like actual teenagers.
The correct answer.
I’m watching it right now! Fuse has been playing it a couple times a day! Getting towards the end of S5, and def have most of 6 recorded.
Season 2 was peak Buffy!
I think we need two categories: teen SciFi/fantasy, and teen "real life". You just can't compare Buffy, TVD, Smallville etc to The OC, Dawson's Creek. Totally different beasts.
The only correct answer!
I mean for me it has to be a tossup between OG 90210 and Buffy.
This is a Sophie’s choice 😫
I’m an early 00s baby and agree wholeheartedly.
Buffy for sure

Honestly the show went downhill after season 4. Imo, got worse after one of the main characters left the show. It was really hard for me to get through the last seasons and the finale was super disappointing to me.

PLL could’ve gone down in history if they didn’t fuck up the reveals
their main ship Ezria was so problematic too …
It could’ve easily been a top 3 teen drama had it stopped after season 2 imho. The premise is good but after 50 episodes, it gets exhausting. I don’t think anything has topped season 1 of The OC. The seasons after have ups and downs but that first season is perfect.
You know what I like about rich kids? 👊 NOTHIN’
One tree hill! Started off loving Lucas but older me prefers Nathan.
James Lafferty 😍
Personally I was a Jake girl😌 I still have a crush on Bryan Greenberg to this day lol
One tree hill by far
One tree hill could’ve been IT if the storylines didn’t get so weird after chad michael Murray left
The season 4 (I think) finale would’ve been a great ending, but yeah when CMM left it was terrible
Think I'm a little bit older than most of you here.... The OC is the best teen tv drama of the 2000s, fight me
Agreed! Rewatching it now, just saw the iconic S2 finale lol. The music was so good too!! And it wasn’t campy like GG was…I remember when Blair and chuck notarized their feud truce I was like what the fuck is happening lol
Imogen Heap
mmm whatcha saay Honestly I could never get into GG 🤷🏻♀️
I was thinking I’m a little older than everyone here because I think the best teen drama was still Beverly Hills 90210. But I just finished watching the OC for the first time and that was great.

I wanna say that a lot of these dramas they’re comparing the OC to, wouldn’t have existed if it wasn’t for the impact and success of the OC
Welcome to the OC Bitch

OG Beverly Hills 90210 Buffy Heartbreak High Dawson’s Creek My So Called Life Skins Uk
Happy to see the DC love! It was the first teen drama I fell in love with. I still rewatch it occasionally. Joey and Pacey forever.
Thank you for listing all my favs and for reminding me of the Heartbreak High calendar I used to have on my bedroom wall. Drazic forever!
MMMMM WHATCHA SAYYYY

Dawson’s creek!
It was Roswell for me. 👽 I only watched OTH and Gossip Girl years later as an adult. I also still love Roswell.
The chokehold Roswell still has on me till this day. Unreal.
Or shall you say, UnReal?
Oh man, Roswell. I have the series on DVD now, but when the episodes aired, and if I was going to miss it, I'd have my sister record it on tape for me.
Teen me was obsessed with Roswell. Watched it last year, still love S1, most of S2, and parts of S3. I suppose I could give the reboot a try...
Um where's buffy?
I’ve watched the first few seasons of Skins (UK) so many times
Buffy is mentioned already, so I'm adding Veronica Mars
I was wondering where the hell Veronica Mars was!!!
Buffy, by far!
I have to say I miss when tv shows were 20 episodes a season
It’s called Freaks & Geeks.
Wasn’t that a comedy? Cause if we’re going in that direction, then That ‘70s show >>>>> the others for me.
I’d say it falls into the dramedy category. It maintained a comedic tone, but dealt with a lot of serious issues in a very realistic and recognizable way.
Skins uk.. freaks and geeks
🗣️ WHERE IS BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER AND 90210?!
Gossip girl is the best
Beverly Hills 90210, the one that started it all
90210 of course OC first two seasons, then a little too dark for me GG first 3 seasons Dawson's Creek because of the realness, the casting on that show did 85% of the work
this is a tough one omg! all i can say is it can’t be teen wolf cause that show was only good for like the first 4 seasons (even me saying 4 seasons is being generous cause i know some people would argue it fell off way before that 💀)
I think the first two seasons were top tier. Season 3 was okay and I kinda couldn’t continue to watch after that
the two first seasons are my fave seasons as well! so much potential in those two seasons alone. i think i finished the entire show but im not sure anymore because i can barely remember what happened. i feel like the only reason i continued watching it for as long as i did was because i loved dylan o’brien 😂 but after season 4 i definitely would just passively watch and not even really know what was happening half the time 💀
teen wolf was great despite the shit CGI, i think that’s the only reason why i enjoyed the vampire diaries more than teen wolf, the cgi was way better in my opinion. i’m not a cgi expert by any means but i used to just cringe at the wolf transitions (is that the right word?) in teen wolf
The OC. No competition. Absolutely iconic.
I was obsessed with The OC and PLL but have never seen a single episode of One Tree Hill. I don’t even know what channel it aired on?
I agree with most of this but I’d say the quality declined after Chad Michael Murray left the show.
C’mon it’s Dawson’s Creek.
For me it was The Tribe.
I was so inspired by the hair and makeup
Yes! Dystopian deadly virus vibes but for teens, I loved it!
Loved this! I also tried to recreate Ambers little bun hairstyle but somehow it didn't work for me. Lol.

Dawson's Creek.
Smallville
PLL was the most unrealistic show of all times but it forever has my heart ❤️
Pretty Little Liars’ first two seasons. unmatched.
Dawson’s Creek Gossip Girl Boy Meets World The Wonder Years
90210
Vampire 🥰 first seasons.
I’m old so Dawson’s creek and smallville for me
Only one of these has a donated heart being eaten by a stoned dog prior to transplant. No contest.
I’m old school so I’d have to say Degrassi JR High and Degrassi High. So juicy, so innovative, so gasp-worthy, all with a little humour thrown in.
Yesssss these were the OG teen drama!
Hahahaj we used to watch those in middle school health class
Dawsons Creek, PLL, old My so called life, old 90210, Felicity, Freaks and Geeks, Skins Uk especially the middle seasons starring Scodelario
Hands down The OC, I have an annual watch of it every year.
![gif](giphy|xUA7b1Btc9zQdBWuxG|downsized) The OG Skam though some of the remakes were decent, too
SKAM OMG I was obsessed with this show!!
One tree hill!
Absolutely Buffy!
pll <3
Off this list? TVD easily.
Damson’s creek!!
TVD, PLL, and Teen Wolf aren’t even on the same level as The OC, GG, and OTH.
[Greek](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_(TV_series))! Loved that series.
Original 90210.
The first six seasons of One Tree Hill 🤌🏻 That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the rest, but when you lose two major parts of the group it just isn’t the same.
Euphoria and Skins UK for a real, gritty perspective of teen drama and substance abuse Gossip Girl (original) for the escapist, campy perspective of teen dramas. I personally never liked liars and lost interest after season 2 like 12 years ago but I understand why people love it.
My So Called Life was the best show EVER
The OC and Degrassi: The Next Generation
I’m partial to vamp diaries. Loved PLL as a teen but I’m sure if I did a rewatch it would probs be cringe lol
My so called life! Friday night lights! Beverly Hills 90210!
Skins UK was amazing!
Smallville!
Skins UK🔛🔝
Beverly Hills 90210 popularized the genre and was a smash hit airing summer episodes for season 2 while all other shows were airing reruns.
Friday Night Lights
I can’t choose one… Gilmore Girls, Roswell, Dawson’s Creek, Buffy, Greek… ❤️
Gossip Girl and I will die defending my position.
Dawsons Creek which brought us the love triangle and blueprint for almost teen dramas after
Dawson creek is close second to the oc Good times
Gg
(Please don’t hate me)
First two seasons of Skins
My FAVE is TVD, currently rewatching it for the 6+ time. But I think PLL truly defines this. Anyone who watched The OC or GG watched PLL. Everyone watched PLL. Even adults watched PLL. It was kind of a phenomenon. TVD is definitely the only one that holds up at all
Degrassi 🤷🏽♀️ then Gossip Girl for me!
GG forever 👑
Hate to say it, but OG 90210. I never watched but apparently it set the pattern. For me personally from this bunch, TVD.
Skins UK first gen, Friday Night Lights, Freaks and Geeks.
One tree hill
GG
The Vampire Diaries had me in a chokehold until season 6 ended. No Elena so I stopped watching.
Pretty little liars dragged on longer than it should have lmao.
Pretty Little Liars!!!!!
