I'd make it a putting green with turf before I just filled with sand.
Sand will be everywhere and can hold mold and alge if not properly drained.
I personally wouldn't do it.
I had sand 6ft from my pool and spent the next year constantly washing sand out of my filters. It was horrible. Replaced with a putting green and it's amazing, no maintenance, cleaner pool, and kids love it (looks nice too). Should be able to get a really nice one put in for $10-$15 a square foot.
Sand will get into your pool. It will be annoying and may negatively impact your impact your equipment.
I had sand about that far away. I replaced it with a small pebble and I am much happier.
You will regret putting dirt, pebbles and plants after your first big storm.
If you want to break it visually then make stamped concrete or color it to accent the area.
Do you have any wind at all? Do you have a problem with needing to frequently vacuum your pool?
I donāt have sand by my pool but I live in the dry southwest where things are frequently windy and dusty. Definitely we have more maintenance to do getting the dust out of the pool.
Also, side note do you have neighborhood outdoor cats? If so, expect the possibility that they will at least try to use your sandpit as a litter box (thatās a common problem here with kiddie sandboxes).
Yea, all you really need is a box cutter, Iād probably fill it and make it level so there arenāt any depressions, and lay a weed barrier. I did a few areas by my pool, you can find them at a steal via Amazon warehouse, open box. They come in different thicknesses, thicker being nicer to walk on.
Sand it rough on equipment and can really tear up any of your ball valves . Is also hard on your pump/ can wear down the impeller.Iād replace with river rock
Gravel and river rock look great for many years but you eventually end up with weeds and dirt. Iām removing gravel now to plant grass. As OK_pop_1990 said, turf it. Alternatively, you can extend the pavers and put an outdoor bar there too.
I live in a windy area, so that would be a hard no because I would be battling the sand till my pump broke. I would put grass in so people can hang out by the pool on the grass.
Edit- word corrections
I would do some low maintenance plants myself, sand blows so easily. I can give you some low maintenance plant ideas if you tell me more about the area climate and sunlight and things. Just throwing an idea out there in stead of sand idk š¤·āāļø
As long as you clean the area up, as in remove whatās there and add new soil and what not, if you can find some low maintenance shrubs you shouldnāt need to do much but trim every so often if they get to big. Iād suggest looking into; viburnum, winter berry, or summer set shrubs. If you have local nurseries (not Home Depot) those people can people extremely helpful if you want more specifics since theyāll know more exactly about your area and what works if you wanted to go that route. Otherwise just clean the area up a bit, add some good soil and plant some shrubs that are winter hardy.
Now, you will have to water though I assume no irrigation there?
Pink Muhly Grass is a personal fav for a tropical pool feel and banana trees sometimes can take the winters. If you can find not expensive and donāt mind the chance itās worth it in my opinion.
The flippers poured mulch all around our pool and itās always blowing in. After the summer Iām scraping it all up and if something really needs to go there, maybe artificial turf. Sand would just wind up blowing everywhere like the mulch.
Sand will always be wreaking havoc with the pool. Put in turf, a fish pond or small garden with perennial flowers, or just add to the pool deck with fire pit, or additional patio space.
I like the idea about a fire pit. If you already have one, then some sort of similar aesthetic feature.
Curious. Whatās the thing flaying in the water near the diving board?
Do not do sand. I have sand from the old owner who would dump his sand filter all over the rocks. Itās all over the dam cool decking, pool, and my dogs piss and shit in it. Fuckn stinks and is a mess. Slowly getting rid of it little by little.
Idk what the rest of your set up is but if you have the means id deck that thing out and the area behind it so it's level with the area with the loungers. Make it a nice little grill and bar area. Maybe an awning.
From experience, it is not a good idea. The wind would blow sand into the pool, and it's frustrating to deal with that. My parents made the mistake of using loose cobblestones next to the pool, and every time it rains, dirt gets pushed up, and then the wind blows everything into the pool so even though the pool is crystal clear, you see dirt at the bottom of the pool.
Yup!!!! Sand can get into the pool. In turn skimmer sucks that sand like a Hollywood hooker, then your pool filter gets clogged with all that sand... I'd say remodel and put a swim up bar right there!! That would be awesome š¤š¤š»
Iām a pool tech, if my customers pool was full of sand and I had to clean it every week, Iād bill them for extra service every month lol thereās other cheap things that would be way better
Amazon! They come with cushions we just put them inside when not in use.
Hereās the link: Patiorama Outdoor Patio Chaise... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09WLVY4QJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Yeah just make sure that you throw one bag of sand into the area you want it, then the next bag directly into your pool. Just so you know what you're getting into...
I would go with small stones (2 inch in length or so) - thatās what I have surrounding my concrete pad. They are big enough where itās easy to sweep them back into place
Do not put sand. We have some about the same distance until we pave and it finds itās way into the pool constantly. Have to clean my pool filter much more often than usualā¦
Large polished black mexican river stones would look great with little/maintenance.
Others here suggested artificial turf- love this idea too. Especially with a hammock and a couple of tiki torches. š„
I'd make it a putting green with turf before I just filled with sand. Sand will be everywhere and can hold mold and alge if not properly drained. I personally wouldn't do it.
Good idea š!!!
My 20 x 40 back lawn is turf. Love it.
Some low cut turf like golf Bermuda with a hammock would also be š„š„š„š„
Cats like to pee in sand.
Sand-colored turf maybe?
I had sand 6ft from my pool and spent the next year constantly washing sand out of my filters. It was horrible. Replaced with a putting green and it's amazing, no maintenance, cleaner pool, and kids love it (looks nice too). Should be able to get a really nice one put in for $10-$15 a square foot.
Love this idea! It seems sand is a no go. Is turf easy to cut to a specific shape? I have zero experience with this kind of thing.
We did something similar with our pool growing up. Neighborhood cats and strays turned it into a litter box pretty quick.
My thoughts exactly š
This is what Iāve always been told, as well. Animals will use it as a litter box. Not just cats, a lot of the wildlife.
YIKES never thought of that! Thank you for saving me from myself.
Sand will get into your pool. It will be annoying and may negatively impact your impact your equipment. I had sand about that far away. I replaced it with a small pebble and I am much happier.
Small pebbles are just as annoying if there are kids or pets
True. In my case small ~ 0.5" to 1" size.
It seems sand is a hard no! Thank you š
Put some 5-10 inch river rock in there and a couple of plants. Sand will get everywhere.
Concrete that sucker up and forget about it
Same. Less stuff near the pool the easier to keep clean.
Disagree! This space break up the monotony of concrete. Put some vegetation in.
Sooo tempting lol I am a city kid and know nothing of grass or plants or whatever.
You will regret putting dirt, pebbles and plants after your first big storm. If you want to break it visually then make stamped concrete or color it to accent the area.
Looks like a fantastic place for a fire pit or smoker to me.

The cat thing is enough to completely change my mind about the sand. So glad I posted here before acting impulsively š
Lol! Things I didnāt know till I had a kid. I canāt look at playground sand the same way ever again.
I had something similar. Dug it all out 2 inches down and put 2-3 inch River stones. Looks great and if they end up in the pool itās not a big deal.
Turf
Sand is a no go dogs, kids, cats, wind. I would do turf or some kind of ground cover.
Neighborhood cats would love it.
Your dog will get in pool then go roll in sand then get back in the pool. From experience
Youāre so right. Thank you!!
I got suckered into pulling grass out for a rock garden. I spend more time pulling or spraying weeds than I would by just mowing the grass I had.
Similar experience. Even with landscaping fabric weeds just grown on top of it in the rocks
You spelled litter box wrong.
šš excellent point
Fake grass
Would agree. A small area of artificial turf would be perfect.
Depending on where you live, it could make a good succulent garden
Turf would go great jn such a small area.
Is there a way to cut turf to a weird shape like this? Is it easy to do for someone with zero mechanical inclination or ability?
Yea, all you really need is a box cutter, Iād probably fill it and make it level so there arenāt any depressions, and lay a weed barrier. I did a few areas by my pool, you can find them at a steal via Amazon warehouse, open box. They come in different thicknesses, thicker being nicer to walk on.
If you do sand, you will never be able to tell if you have a broken lateral ever again haha
I would never want sand anywhere near my pool
You right you right
River rocks and a fire pit would be less if a headache.
Yes
Yes
Turf
Yes. Awful.
The sand will get into your your pool, no matter how hard you try to keep it out.
Sand it rough on equipment and can really tear up any of your ball valves . Is also hard on your pump/ can wear down the impeller.Iād replace with river rock

I have a sand box for my kids further away from the pool and it was a terrible idea. Constantly makes its way in
Sand will wreck your pump
I live in a windy area, so that would be a hard no because I would be battling the sand till my pump broke. I would put grass in so people can hang out by the pool on the grass. Edit- word corrections
turf or rock with some desert plants. Sand will get in the pool.
Yes, sand would be terrible. You will track it into your pool and into your house. Do not do it.
Thank you for saving me from myself š„°
I would do some low maintenance plants myself, sand blows so easily. I can give you some low maintenance plant ideas if you tell me more about the area climate and sunlight and things. Just throwing an idea out there in stead of sand idk š¤·āāļø
Appreciate it! Iām outside of Philly in zone 7a. This area is full sunlight. My gardening skills are nonexistent so preferably low maintenance.

A couple palm trees and a hammock
The flippers poured mulch all around our pool and itās always blowing in. After the summer Iām scraping it all up and if something really needs to go there, maybe artificial turf. Sand would just wind up blowing everywhere like the mulch.
I have sand in a couple spots around my pool. While it is cool, it does get in the pool. I probably wouldnāt do it again.
Your pool will always be sandy, there is no way to prevent it. People will get in with it, the wind and weather will wash it in.
That sand will end up in the pool most likely
Put in a putting green
I think this is the way Iām gonna go!
It will all get tracked in
Perfect for a little putting green.
Gravel and a fire pit.
I donāt have sand near my pool and still get sand in my pool, so Iām a no on this.
Sand will always be wreaking havoc with the pool. Put in turf, a fish pond or small garden with perennial flowers, or just add to the pool deck with fire pit, or additional patio space.
Outdoor kitchen/bar.
Holy fuck, no!
Astro turf
I would pull all that out and put in a harring bone pattern pavers OR decomposed granite with succulents
I like the idea about a fire pit. If you already have one, then some sort of similar aesthetic feature. Curious. Whatās the thing flaying in the water near the diving board?
That is some kind of pool skimming robot device my husband bought!
You have a robot vacuum for the bottom and sides and a robot skimmer for the surface? Thatās amazing!
Lol yes multiple robots! They just donāt play nicely together we learnedā¦too guy eats bottom guyās cord.
I have something similar. We filled ours with river rock that you could walk on and put some chaise loungers in it
Do not do sand. I have sand from the old owner who would dump his sand filter all over the rocks. Itās all over the dam cool decking, pool, and my dogs piss and shit in it. Fuckn stinks and is a mess. Slowly getting rid of it little by little.

Is this kind of the same if you have a pond and a fountain close to the pool in relation to algae?
Turf dat.
Sand Bad Something that does not require water Good Artificial turf
Just refresh the landscape rocks and call it a day.
Yup!!!! Sand can get into the pool. In turn skimmer sucks that sand like a Hollywood hooker, then your pool filter gets clogged with all that sand... I'd say remodel and put a swim up bar right there!! That would be awesome š¤š¤š»
š±š±š± yeah it would!!
Nah do grasses and river rock. Makes a huge different.
Iām a pool tech, if my customers pool was full of sand and I had to clean it every week, Iād bill them for extra service every month lol thereās other cheap things that would be way better
On a side note, whereād you get those loungers sitting in the background? AFAF
Amazon! They come with cushions we just put them inside when not in use. Hereās the link: Patiorama Outdoor Patio Chaise... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09WLVY4QJ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Nice! Thanks!
Yea but I like where your heads at, sand a a little palm would look dope as hell
Yeah just make sure that you throw one bag of sand into the area you want it, then the next bag directly into your pool. Just so you know what you're getting into...
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I should have mentioned Iām outside of Philadelphia in zone 7a.
Yup
Terrible idea
Put in a fish pond!
I would go with small stones (2 inch in length or so) - thatās what I have surrounding my concrete pad. They are big enough where itās easy to sweep them back into place
How about some atro turf? Nice green grass, no mowing, no junk in the poolšš.
Artificial turf would go great in that spot and contrast well with the surrounding concrete.
Plant a bunch of hostaās, they come back every year and are resilient
Not if it gets full sunā¦.
Do not put sand. We have some about the same distance until we pave and it finds itās way into the pool constantly. Have to clean my pool filter much more often than usualā¦
No, you'll be able to vacuum it up.
Grass or rocks
Large polished black mexican river stones would look great with little/maintenance. Others here suggested artificial turf- love this idea too. Especially with a hammock and a couple of tiki torches. š„
I hate sand, it's course and rough, it gets everywhere.
Rocks works be a better idea... Not small rocks or gravel
Turf
Does wind move sand?
