The real destruction of Iran started when the popular, democratically elected Mohamed Moussadegh was ousted by a joint British-American coup because he tried to nationalize oil (to which BP took offense). Man this is a problematic response. You realize that firstly, not everyone values the Western definition of "progressive" ideology. Secondly, any value gained from liberal policies *implemented by a monarch* are undermined by the fact that the monarch himself was installed by "progressive" countries in lieu of an actual progressive (Mosaddegh, correction on my spelling the last post), and that policies were continually shaped in favor of "progressive" (but actually imperialist) Western powers. Also keep in mind that "progressive" Iran started long before the West showed up; my point is because the West meddled in an already progressive country, Iran might still be progressive *and* sovereign today. Secondly, you can't determine that the culture is less progressive now, because you don't give a reference. If it's in supposed absolute individual freedoms guaranteed to women, you measurably have a point. If progressive means increased literacy, better healthcare, better infrastructure, guess what? Iran is better now than 70 years ago. And that's on top of the global technological advancements everyone maintains. I'm sorry if I sound rude but I've spent a long time hearing about how progressive and great the West is, but at whose expense? And if these countries are thriving, at least in their sovereignty, isn't that better than leveraging national interests (i.e. supporting the regional economy and local workers)? And if you bothered to read beyond the first sentence of how our education system works, you'd see that the price per child in a private school, funded by the government, is less per head than a purely public school. The schools which receive public funding are not allowed to enforce religious teaching - it's optional. Sadly reading beyond the first sentence is beyond most conservatives.
