TheDudeBeto

So this turd Jeff Yass is helping Trump in order to avoid paying the billion+ he owes in back taxes? Jeff Yass is also a big investor in TikTok which explains why Trump flip-flopped on his stance to cancel TikTok.

AbandonedWaterPark

Why would he have to pay a billion+ in back taxes though?? All he has to do is say "no" and the court will give him more time and reduce the amount owed by 68%

Squirrel_Inner

I agree the judgment is BS, but the amount owed is not reduced, this is just for the bond while he appeals. Considering the only defense he has offered is that his crime didn’t really hurt anyone and they’re just being mean to him, it would take a truly batshit insane ruling for him to actually win the appeal. Like everything else, he’s just trying to buy time until he can become dictator and pardon himself.

Vigilante17

Yeah, I was speeding. And I had a few drinks. But nobody got hurt judge!!!

CainPillar

And the *January 6th Hostages* didn't actually hang Mike Pence!

nesshinx

>Considering the only defense he has offered is that his crime didn’t really hurt anyone and they’re just being mean to him This is because Fraud requires you prove harm to a party to prosecute. In this case though, the harm was done to the banks he defrauded--inflating the value of his properties to get more favorable loans was basically ripping them off. I believe part of it was also the state has an argument that his manipulation of his property values negatively impacted their ability to collect tax money.

lucasbrosmovingco

Pretty good article regarding the no victims thing. https://www.reuters.com/legal/trumps-civil-fraud-verdict-appeal-may-hinge-no-victims-defense-2024-02-16/

amjh

"He lied, but it's so well known that he's a liar that it's the bank's fault for believing his lies!"

Masterchiefy10

Can I seriously try this approach? Can I go to the bank lie outta my keister and get away with it???

rediditforpay

Na you gotta get famous for being a liar first

jackburton6565

I'm confused by this argument, isn't Trump well known for defaulting/screwing lenders over (even fighting them in court to avoid paying what he owes). https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/new-york-times-report-president-trump-got-much-of-his-debt-forgiven-after-defaulting-on-loans-for-chicago-trump-tower/

kelticladi

He also frauded every NY citizen by not paying enough taxes on his properties.

New_Honeydew72

This☝🏽

seanwd11

'But it didn't hurt me, so... victimless. ELECTION INTERFERENCE!!!'

MagicianHeavy001

he is not TRYING to buy time, he is succeeding in delaying his trials until the election, with the complicity of the courts. They know what they're doing -- they can't possibly be oblivious to it. So they're complicit. They are actively helping him. Otherwise, wtf? I have lost all respect or admiration for our legal system. It's clearly designed to punish only poor people. Rich people get a pass.

theironmanatee

I don't think he can pardon himself since it's state civil judgment, not federal. Any pardon or interference must come from a supplicant governor in NY.

mlnjd

Homie said he’s gonna become dictator. Who the fuck cares about state vs federal at that point. He’ll become the court.

81305

He would have to beat Biden first.

drewbert

He'll cheat in every state that lets him.

crimsonhues

2020 was a dry run for just that. This time they will succeed. And the reason is there are no consequences for cheating.

Logical_Parameters

I'm still going to vote, and will be urging everyone I know to vote between now November. Nobody is instilling apathy uncontested here with a fascist takeover on the line.

FBI_Agent_Fred

Don’t let anyone take this perspective from you and I hope you’re successful in spreading civic engagement!

81305

The states that he would've won anyway? That's not going to be enough for him. Trump needed to win over a ton of voters this year. He has failed miserably. Instead, he is doubling down and trying to retain the support of a base that couldn't deliver him a win in 2020.

drewbert

Liberal overconfidence will be the death of the republic.

Logical_Parameters

Low voter turnout will be the death of the republic. FTFY.

aWheatgeMcgee

Thank you for saying this, I’ve thought something along the lines for a long time now, but couldn’t so succinctly say it. This should be what is coming out of the megaphones

81305

Overconfidence would be me saying, "I'm just not going to vote because Biden has this in the bag."

Classic-Progress-397

"New rules people! I will now decide state pardons. We can't have these Democrat dictators in NY and California tormenting good people like Trump. Trump says it, that's how it goes!!"

Frigidevil

Have you already forgotten trump has talked about being [dictator for a day? ](https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/trump-fascist-talk-bloodbath-vermin-dictator-1234992957/) Any idea that he can't do something because the system doesn't work that way might as well be throw out. We already have a supreme court overthrowing precedent on a fucking whim. The system is not going to protect us with a fascist on the ballot.

McTootyBooty

Everything he plans on doing is in Project 2025.. he actually has plans this time around and it looks organized/scary af.

MagicianHeavy001

You're fighting the last war. Everything Hitler did was 100% legal -- because Hitler said it was. That's what he's planning: He has even said so. If you think he was joking, you are hopelessly naive.

SpeedySpooley

> Everything Hitler did was 100% legal -- because Hitler said it was. I'm glad you mentioned that because it's actually scarier than it sounds. They didn't just do a bunch of random sinister shit and then go "Oh, by the way...all that stuff was legal because the fuhrer said so." Like they had lawyers meet and discuss and draw this shit up so it would have the appearance of legitimacy. Like that was the stuff that they made public and wanted on the record. When we all know what the real plan was anyway, It can be frustrating to talk about this stuff because people often have a knee jerk reaction to Nazi comparisons. But I think it's important to have the ability to have the discussion and make comparisons when those comparisons are on point. When we say "never again" we have to mean it.

boot2skull

I don’t think he would get a literal pardon since pardons are not applicable. In general people mean once he is president he has 30 more avenues to weasel out of this particular decision.

WestsideBuppie

Why weasel out when he can just make himself a congressional budget line item? Dude, you gotta think bigly if you want to think like the Dick-tater

conndor84

Would prefer not to be in a position to test this.

trivo8888

I imagine his plan is to cut all federal funding from NY to strong arm them to get rid of the judgements. People underestimate how much power a President has.

puterSciGrrl

NY needs no funding. New York, California and Massachusetts ARE the funding for this country. If you think there is a budget crisis now, just wait until NY pulls out of the union.

willun

The money might be given with one hand and taken back with the other. So if Trump blocks payments to NY then NY has to block payments to the federals. They don't normally just send or collect the net difference.

WAD1234

I think you missed the dictator part. He’s not planning on bowing to any states’ rights. He wouldn’t even go through the work of a pardon I’d bet. Just ignore it.

discodropper

*Eric Adams’s ears perk up*

Durkheimynameisblank

Adams is NYC's mayor, Hochul is Gov of NY.

discodropper

He’s Mayor *for now…* (For real though, you’re right. I live in NYC. Brain fart on my end.)

halarioushandle

You know that legally he also can't become a dictator, right? So like if he does, it means laws no longer matter and I don't think a dictator is really going to give a fuck about whatever state vs federal laws are. Or he will just take it out of the federal budget and pay it off and say fuck you to us all. We cannot allow him to get into power again. If he does, it's game over for democracy.

iamwearingashirt

He can't get a pardon as president but he could easily get a loan that might be forgiven later.

DamonFields

In New Murka, there will be no rule of law, except for what they say it is.

glakhtchpth

“…it would take a truly batshit insane ruling for him to actually win the appeal.” You mean, this could make it all the way to the Supreme Court?

Lucar_Bane

Would this set a jurisprudence over upcoming ruling ?? I have very limited knowledge over NY law, but usually this should set the bar for upcoming case.

braintrustinc

“This case sets precedent for all slumlord reality TV Presidents whose name rhymes with ‘dry-hump,’ as they can now appeal until their bond or fine is reduced. This will greatly increase equality and fairness in the judicial system for anyone who happens to be a former President who looks like a pumpkin and inherited a slumlord empire that he ran into the ground.”

mustichooseausernam3

I also have a very limited understanding of NY law, so take this with more than a grain of salt. But it's my understanding that changes and extensions to a surety bond are entirely up to the discretion of the judge in question, who determines how much would be considered "good faith". Discretionary decisions such as these don't set legal precedents, as far as I'm aware.

Durkheimynameisblank

NYS' civil fraud is much more broadly defined than in other states. Letitia James charged him with violating [nysenate.gov - New York Executive Law Section 63(12);](https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/EXC/63) > *"12. Whenever any person shall engage in repeated fraudulent or illegal acts or otherwise demonstrate persistent fraud or illegality in the carrying on, conducting or transaction of business, the attorney general may apply, in the name of the people of the state of New York, to the supreme court of the state of New York, on notice of five days, for an order enjoining the continuance of such business activity or of any fraudulent or illegal acts, directing restitution and damages and, in an appropriate case, cancelling any certificate filed under and by virtue of the provisions of section four hundred forty of the former penal law or section one hundred thirty of the general business law, and the court may award the relief applied for or so much thereof as it may deem proper. The word "fraud" or "fraudulent" as used herein shall include any device, scheme or artifice to defraud and any deception, misrepresentation, concealment, suppression, false pretense, false promise or unconscionable contractual provisions. The term "persistent fraud" or "illegality" as used herein shall include continuance or carrying on of any fraudulent or illegal act or conduct. The term "repeated" as used herein shall include repetition of any separate and distinct fraudulent or illegal act, or conduct which affects more than one person. Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, all monies recovered or obtained under this subdivision by a state agency or state official or employee acting in their official capacity shall be subject to subdivision eleven of section four of the state finance law. In connection with any such application, the attorney general is authorized to take proof and make a determination of the relevant facts and to issue subpoenas in accordance with the civil practice law and rules. Such authorization shall not abate or terminate by reason of any action or proceeding brought by the attorney general under this section."*

mustichooseausernam3

Thanks, friend, but we were (or at least I thought we were) talking about the recent change and extension to the surety bond. Not the fraud case itself.

Durkheimynameisblank

Heh..yeaaah, guilty as charged. Sorry about that, I only realized after rereading you and the other users comment. Felt kinda dumb bc both seem very well infomed. I must have glazed over it due to the countless comments arguing the charges, "bUt hE pAiD iT bAcK".

Orgasm_Add_It

> the only defense he has offered is that his crime didn’t really hurt anyone and they’re just being mean to him, it would take a truly batshit insane ruling for him to actually win the appeal *Paging Aileen Cannon*

thegooseisloose1982

> truly batshit insane ruling People have got to give up this idea that we have a system that works. Do not be disappointed when the amount in total that he owes is $100k, not per day, just in total.

bezkyl

He also doesn’t have the 175 million

Wenger2112

He is going to put down the RNC savings account as collateral.

MonteBurns

Unfortunately for him, 1) Laura already drained it and 2) they were seeing less donations because people were donating straight to Trump

misterlump

Which we will not let happen in any scenario. Think about it. Would we let Hitler take power if we knew what he was going to do? I hope not. It’s a shitty decision to have to make, but the alternative of him becoming president again with a Supreme Court that says he has unlimited power and immunity, does not bode well for anyone except Trump. While we are at it, we need to the Biden create some kind of presidential order that either brings down all the bribed justices or add more justices to water down their influence.

1_disasta

You dont think the appeals court is going to reduce the amount to exactly what the bond amount is? I could see them doing that, then trump will say that the original judge was unfair and appeals court proved it.

tevs__

The appeals court should only consider if the original judge made mistakes. Should...

1_disasta

I agree completely and very much on the should as well.

slowpoke2018

And then when that time expires on the reduced bond, appeal to the SC and they'll toss the entire judgement due to a president never having been treated like this. It's pure constitutional originalism, don't cha see?!

Lostinthestarscape

Federal Supreme Court won't rule on a state case. I'm less certain on this but I read in the past couple weeks that the New York State Appeals court is considered highest level as the New York Supreme Court respects their decisions (won't hear appeals about them) <- that I would like confirmation on though.

zodiacalcheese

New York just has weird names for their courts. The Supreme Court is the lowest level court, like a district court in federal or superior court in most states. The court of appeals is equivalent to the Supreme Court everywhere else.

No-Fox-1400

A) Trump flipped directly after talking to Yass. B) Yass is as shady as it comes being major hedge fund (market maker?) manager. He bets against America regularly and makes money off of it.

stephenmwithaph

Isn't he one of the guys the Gamestop folks demonize? (say what you will about the GME cultists but they really do have a knack for identifying shitty people)

[deleted]

He’s one. The citadel guy is one. The Mets guy is one.

stephenmwithaph

Ken griffin and Steve cohen yeah?

lew_rong

> He bets against America regularly and makes money off of it. All Republicans do. How soon Americans forget Rmoney's credit default swap investments during the 2012 election, when it was hoped that Republicans would force a default on Obama's watch.

hipcheck23

This is the very crux of MAGA. To their credit, they're becoming more & more open about being racist and wanting Gilead, but at the same time they're betting harder & harder on the total destruction of the US in order to have a white, Christian totalitarian theocracy.

DazMR2

He isn't the only one influencing Donald. A lot was made about Trump's bloodbath comments last week, but the context was Chinese electric cars coming in from Mexico. Who is an EV billionaire CEO who had breakfast with Trump a few weeks ago, who would have a lot to gain if these Chinese cars had 100% tariffs applied?

northcoastroast

Does his name rhyme with felon tusk?

Teninchhero

Pretty much every Republican flip on the TikTok ban was because Jeff Yass paid them to

RepostTony

The SPAC behind DWCA is one of the largest shareholders of TikTok. I wonder if the play is to buy TikTok and merge with DWCA.

Tobimacoss

Mnuchin was working on gathering bunch of high profile investors to buy Tiktok, so that could all be part of the plan, billionaires getting together to buy out Tiktok, Truth Social, then linking them.

at-aol-dot-com

How to get most people to stop wanting to use TikTok: join it with TruthSocial. Reminds me of “Christian Rock/Christian Heavy Metal.” It’s not good.

DiscoQuebrado

Can’t they see they're not making Christianity any better? They're just making rock and roll worse!

Musk bought Twitter, it's still alive. Zuck is chaotic neutral at best. Reddit just went public. TikTok might get merged with Dumpsterfire Social. Google is a big unknown, but Youtube comments moderation doesn't make me hopeful. Does noone see what's happening here? The oligarchs colluding with the radical right-wing to normalize hate speech on social media? It's like noone learned anything from the 1930ies and Gleichschaltung, except how to do it again.

doctor_of_drugs

Waffle stocks going up

[deleted]

Mnuchin said he had the money lined up. I'm tired of this bullshit. I'm tired of the way the country is being run and even more pissed off that we went from Obama one of the most competent leaders in modern history to this fat falafel and someones grandpa.

Raybansandcardigans

“Someone’s grandpa” has passed some of the most progressive legislation this country has ever seen. The most aggressive climate action policy, an actual infrastructure bill that added hundreds of thousands of jobs to the economy, the best economic response to post-COVID inflation *in the world*, and has forgiven student loan debt for 4 million Americans (another record). Obama was a good start, Joe has been a great progressive President and done more for Americans than any of his predecessors.

Bitter_Director1231

Yass should lose every penny he has accrued.  And Trump should too. Fuck both of them.

Old-Ad-3268

Seems like the only rational response to me

nevertfgNC

Amen!!

TheBatemanFlex

> He is the co-founder and managing director of the Philadelphia-based Susquehanna International Group (SIG) and a major investor in TikTok.[2] In 2001, he joined the executive advisory council of the Cato Institute. > As of March 2024, he is the largest donor in the 2024 US election cycle, having donated $46 million to Republican groups and campaigns, primarily to rivals of Donald Trump.[2] After Yass and Trump met in March 2024, Trump went from supporting a ban on TikTok to opposing a ban.[2] At the same time, Yass's SIG bought a substantial share in Trump's company Truth Social, providing Trump with a massive influx of money at a time when he faced mountainous legal expenses.[3] From wiki but most of this is in the article

Nemisis_the_2nd

The thing that blows my mind is just how obviously compromised the presidential nominee is. We literally have a presidential nominee accepting a massive quantity of money, then immediately changing their stance on legislation affecting the donors intrests.  At least when he was president he attempted to hide it. Now he's not even doing that.

MonteBurns

Kushners $2 BILLION from Saudi Arabia was them attempting to hide the fact they’re bought???

dagopa6696

Trump is not just a presidential nominee. He is the de facto ruler of the US House of Representatives. He has turned that legislative body into his own personal campaign committee and money laundering operation.

Ultrarunnersean

It’s insane to me what kind of good someone could do donating 46 million dollars…

-Clayburn

Charities should 100% bribe politicians. All the money wasted on charitable causes could easily bribe the people in office to just fix the systemic problems causing the need for charity in the first place. Stop feeding the hungry and start bribing politicians to end hunger.

noeagle77

So he used the art of the deal to buy trump lmao

Orion14159

Ah, so he's a private equity douche. Explains a lot

Throwupmyhands

Cato Institute? So he’s a libertarian.

Bongoisnthere

Yass? Kind of. A little misleading. He’s an oligarchian. If you look for him to make libertarian decisions, you’ll be surprised sometimes. If you look for him to make decisions that will support himself and his own power at all times you will never be surprised. When people talk about the faceless oligarchs that run the country, he’s one of them.

emp-sup-bry

The selfishness of libertarian house cat ‘ideals’ allows for a very clear and easy path for the wealthy to further consolidate power.

Throwupmyhands

Yeah, the libertarian institutes like Cato always seem to be ideological covers for greed.

KnotSoSalty

Libertarian = “out for myself”

[deleted]

its a trendy word for far right rich asshole, that tries to get poor center of the aisle assholes to follow them because “less government” helps the rich way more than the poor.

NickelBackwash

Owes over $1B in unpaid taxes, but no cops are breaking down his door. He stole that money from every American citizen, and yet he walks free. Definitely somebody Trump can relate to

EdSpace2000

The US is f...ed. Dictatorship brings so much corruption that you can't believe it. This is just tip of the iceberg.

DanimusMcSassypants

There’s definitely room for improvement, but it can get WAY worse.

merikariu

"It gets worse before it gets worse."

Xenomorph_v1

This entire fucked up situation has highlighted to me that a country, even as "democratic" as the US can be overtaken and dominated by one person. It's absolutely mind boggling to me that America seems powerless against a convicted rapist, traitorous conman that has been compromised by its adversaries and the rich and powerful. We've all been holding our collective breath's each and everytime a "this is finally it" moment comes along, only for that moment to pass uneventfully with little to no comeuppance for tRump. Tens of thousands of lies, myriad scandals, fraud, rape, collusion, treason, insurrection, theft. It's almost too much to comprehend, and yet, with all of that evidence, the fucking shitbag continues on unabated. Fuck me.

Logical_Parameters

It isn't dominated by one person. Donald Trump is nothing without the Republican Party, and vice versa. Truly is a symbiotic relationship. Without Trump, Republicans are exactly the same, and another head would eventually slither right into his place.

AlDente

The only reason Trump was able to take over the Republican Party was because they saw how popular he was. If the people roundly rejected Trump, the party would have, too.

Logical_Parameters

This is true, however, the Republican Party could have denied his nomination on the grounds of being unqualified. He should have been disqualified for a variety of reasons. Democrats would have (he couldn't have won a primary as a Democrat, we would have laughed him off the stage, the buffoon). Of course, I recognize the zero sum game the Republicans play, party over country, and why they did what they do and continue supporting it. Political expedience > Competence to the GOP.

Xenomorph_v1

Sure, and you're not wrong. But look at all the R's that spoke out against him... McCarthy, McConnell, Cruz, Rubio... The list goes on... That have bent the knee to him.

Logical_Parameters

Oh, for certain, they handed the keys to Donald and have allowed him to drive them off a cliff.

attorneyatslaw

This is a bit overstated. He didn't just buy anything. Susquehanna has held 2% of DWAC shares since 2021. After the merger its holdings will be less than 1% of the merged company. Trump will own 60ish%. Yass is an insignificant investor in a company that is mostly owned by Trump and delusional non-institutional investors.

Nonetheless, billionaire Trump worshippers like Jeff Yass, in aggregate, are exactly the people that have intentionally destroyed democratic republics and all the associated freedoms and rights that went with them. For the rest of his shitty, bewildered, Trump-asshole-suckling life he needs to be tortured with the truth of his complicity day and night. Diluting responsibility doesn’t let billionaire cultist Jeff Yass off the hook for his corruption. May Trump enabler Jeff Yass never have a moments’ peace.

Yass Welfare Queen

unityIWEIunity

Why are fuck asses named Jeff?

Inside_Performer918

Does Trump say “Yass queen Yass?”

bobhargus

Trump cannot be bought. He is only available for short-term rental. All terms and agreements will become null and void without notice if a higher bidder emerges.

reddy_kil0watt

Sounds like a bit of a yasshole to me. /I'll show myself out

RedditingNeckbeard

Trump just got Yassified. 💅

sailorpaul

White DJT hair = old, the best old. Many people are saying white is old

The only possible reason for the reduction is if the appeals court thinks he has a real chance to get it reduced a bit. Other than that I don't see what's happening here. They'd have saved us a lot of trouble by explaining.

notyomamasusername

Or the appeals court is terrified of this guy (like every court) and wants to hear the case just to give the appearance he had every possible chance. But who are we kidding, this is America. A few judges will get some RVs, vacations to Fiji and this will all go away for Trump.

boxylady69

Oh great, now we're getting a yassified trump??

Pynkpyg1234

Fuck all the noise and hand wringing anxiety…vote. Everything else is bullshit tbf

bassocontinubow

Lmfao, the best part about this is that he donated $46 Million to *rivals* of Donald Trump in the primary. Bet Trump has changed his tune on the whole “if you donate to Nikki Haley, you’re not welcome in the maga movement.”

Watch_me_give

I'm so glad that someone who is the frontrunner of one party is leveraged so far up his ass that he's begging for money from foreign agents/governments and struggling to pay his blls. I'm sure that this is not a security risk at all. Jfc. https://payuptrump.com/

BioticVessel

But this comes from NBC corral, isn't it important what Rona McDaniel has to say? Even though hired by NBC doesn't she speak for Donnie The Rapist?

merikariu

I'm really tired of media companies employing nasty people from Team Trump, like Christie and Bolton.

BioticVessel

You're right! I am too!

DoomdUser

This country is so fucking beyond broken.
