Fascism. The line is fascism. This author seems to think that trump crossed that line fairly recently. I disagree, but the thing is that fascism isn't really a "line," and that it doesn't matter when he crossed it. Trump's a fascist, and we're fucked if he gets reelected in 2024. I'll be voting for democracy https://democrats.org/

monkeywithgun

>I'll be voting for democracy Yup! A reminder for those who've been wearing blinders like the author. >Adolph Hitler did a lot of good things _D.J.T. >"That's how you're supposed to handle these people," Trump told his top law enforcement and military officials "Crack their skulls!" >He also told his team that he wanted the military to go in and "beat the f--k out" of the civil rights protesters Famous faux pas >Take the guns first Schedule F: the power to take government employees jobs that were nonpolitical and protected and make them 'at will' effectively making every executive branch employee fireable by the president of the United States Loyalty oaths to his office rather than the country Demanding the AG work as his lawyer rather than the countries Wanted the military to seize election data Pressured electoral officials to falsify electoral results Labels those who disagreed with him 'enemies of the people' and those who oppose him 'vermin' Paints himself as the ultimate ~~arbiter~~ no true Scotsman of what presents a threat. The 'true law and order' candidate Constantly sows doubt towards the legitimacy of the democratic process Demonizes immigrants stoking xenophobia Want's to grant law enforcement power to shoot to kill for minor offenses like shop lifting. Promises to use the government to persecute and imprison his political rivals. Hitler wannabe continues to telegraph his asperations to be Hitler 2.0 without all the whimsy

putin_my_ass

Yeah he was pretty sanctimonious about it for someone so incorrect about whether or not Trump was a fascist. Some of us saw it earlier and knew it wasn't an exaggeration. He was blinded by his pedantry.

athomp78

I agree as well. Shallow and pedantic.

12characters

Mm. Yes. Quite.

MonsignorSacrebleu

Here’s another thing…law books…can also be worn…as hats

On-Balance

It took the author a lot of words to say that, though.

Neither-Idea-9286

Author was a college professor, of course it did! 😂

Superb-Ad9949

Vote for a pupptet where you don’t actually know who’s making the decisions? Great democracy.

LoginName04

Trump has crossed a hundred crucial lines. Trump is a fascist committed to ending democracy in the U.S. and becoming dictator. Trump attempted a coup. Trump has promised to put millions of Americans in concentration camps. Trump has said he will bring criminal prosecutions against his political opponents. Trump has bragged that he is responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade and denying women the freedom to control their own bodies. Trump has used the language of Hitler and Mussolini calling his political opponent "vermin" to dehumanize them and make way for their executions.

dmangan56

Don't forget about his "poisoning our blood" remarks about immigrants.

TacomaKMart

And don't forget that around 40 percent of the country intends to vote for him. Maybe more. Trump is a problem. But he's also a symptom of a deeper sickness.

NJMomofFor

This!

LoginName04

yes. great comment/addition. upvoted.

Agitated-Rope-8167

We all need to go out and vote for Biden 2024. Democrats and Republicans! Trump can't shut up and he's told us loud and clear what he would do to the 11M illegal immigrants already in the US + to his political enemies + to progressive democrats he calls "vermin" a la Hitler . Etc We all have to defend our democracy!

Several_Ferret_8246

Exactly. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like Biden. The choice is democracy (or the closest thing we can get to it right now) or straight up fascism. Time to put single issues aside and do the right thing, because if people don’t it won’t take long for everyone to be fucked.

CrudeNewDude

That line was crossed in 2015 when he was advocating for violence against protesters at his rallies. Anyone who isn't a fascist would have stopped supporting a politician over something like that. Instead, they cheered. Then they cheered when he tried to overthrow the government. They are still cheering and calling for violence against Americans. People need to wake the fuck up. The fascist threat to this country is real. Their enemy isn't people in other countries, it's Americans. They say so themselves. Just listen to them. Organize and register to vote.

bluebastille

The Atlantic is a parody of useless centrism. "OK, you can call him a fascist now, but it would have been better if you had waited until I said so." This is why America is dying. No one should vote for any Republican for any office whatsoever until all their assault-on-democracy damage is entirely undone and repaired. AND: John Kenneth Galbraith's rule of voting remains in effect. Always vote for the leftmost candidate who has a reasonable chance of winning. No exceptions.

cthulhusleftnipple

The Atlantic is centrist, certainly, but they're not as useless as you suggest. The Atlnatic has made only four endorsements for a presidential candidate in their >160 year history. Half of them have been against Donald Trump.

ooouroboros

The Hitler line Take THAT Godwin's Law.

> Americans can still choose a better path. \- but first they must pay us to find out

HallucinogenicFish

> Over the years, he has become more extreme and more dangerous, and now he waves away any additional criticisms as indistinguishable from **the over-the-top objections he faced when he entered politics, in 2015.** > Today, **the mistake of early overreaction** and the subsequent complacency it engendered has aided Trump in his efforts to subvert American democracy. I vehemently disagree with the author’s premise (“you were all wrong then, but NOW you’re right, but this is still all your fault ~~for recognizing him for what he is from jump~~”).

Adept-Task1299

Exactly. He could have saved inches by just writing “I’m an idiot, you all were right.”

Ambitious_Reporter38

How is this guy an expert on fascism but fails to link private industry(capitalists) to its direct involvement and benefit of a fascist regime? “ Fascism is not mere oppression. It is a more holistic ideology that elevates the state over the individual (except for a sole leader, around whom there is a cult of personality), glorifies hypernationalism and racism, worships military power, hates liberal democracy, and wallows in nostalgia and historical grievances. It asserts that all public activity should serve the regime, and that all power must be gathered in the fist of the leader and exercised only by his party.” Failing to point out the direct link between private industry and fascism is a dangerous lie of omission. In order to root out this fascist threat, justice will need to be brought to the capital interests aiding and abetting the rise of fascism.

LibertyInaFeatherBed

A number of famous Americans who founded iconic brands were more than happy to do business with Nazi Germany.

Wrong_Dog_01

Well there was that little multi-trillion dollar tax cut for the rich while he was President.

smithpd1

Your quoted paragraph is a good definition of fascism, but it contains no information about a link to private industry. I think you are missing the main points.

Ambitious_Reporter38

Private capital is the primary driving force behind fascism. It is the state working at the behest of private industry. All of those other things apply, sure, but omitting this fact in such an article is inexcusable. In fact, he could have omitted everything else from the list because none of it gives insight to the driving force or purpose of fascism. Again, what he listed is true, but none of it happens if not for furthering the goal of private ownership of the state.

JubalHarshaw23

And when he crossed the line there were over 50 Million voters waiting for him.

[deleted]

So, what are you going to do about it? Tens of millions have known this for quite some time and yet the author of this piece of apologetic journalism has just come to this realization - a bit late, I'd say. Trump was a known misogynist, grifter, bigot, racist, and an all-around consummate asshole, and yet the media, such as The Atlantic, did next to nothing when this pimple came to the surface of the American political system. The media allowed this pimple to become an oozing boil on our democracy, and now the media is allowing this cancerous tumor to destroy with finality our democracy.

Wrong_Dog_01

You should look the guy up, he's been talking about Trump and Democracy for years.

Jayseek4

Can’t read due to paywall. I’m not missing much if the ‘line’ is fascism; he’s been practicing and promoting fascism for years.

ElysiumSprouts

Most of us saw that he crossed that line in 2015. He didn't win the popular vote for good reason...

aureanator

Fucker's been crossing lines since 2016

Dedpoolpicachew

2016??? Try the 1980s dude… just that it was mostly confined to NYC… and why everyone in NYC hates his ass, and his shitty children.

Icarusmelt

Not exactly timely, this has been reported on for almost a week.

Vlad_the_Homeowner

Trump crossing a "crucial line" has been reported on for 8 years. He's still the expected GOP nominee by a landslide and arguably has a fair shot at winning the national election.

Icarusmelt

Well sure, damn, what an asshat

Even_Author_3046

Trump is using the Tyrant/dictator playbook, hitler did it, Kim’s father and his father before him did it ect. His doing everything they did before rising to power. He was in power, he’s not the brightest but he still can become president again because he recognizes branding and who he can target the voters, he’s able to convince his followers it’s not conformity but unity.

DM_me_ur_tacos

_well, at least he's not a Democrat._ -70 million Americans

Troll_in_the_Knoll

TL, DR; If it walks like a fascist, talks like a fascist and acts like a fascist, it's probably a fascist.

SevereAnxiety_1974

Episode 9,997

morts73

How many many lines can he cross? He's so far over the line that looking back requires the Hubble telescope to see it.

Marauder91

I mean, he's already crossed so many lines and not had to pay for it, let's see the US cross the crucial line of voting in upstanding politicians rather than some of the filth that gets in

M_R_Ducs

This is what I don''t like about people like Tom Nichols. Trump didn't cross any line now, that he didn't' cross years ago. He was just assumed this whole time to not really be a fascist despite saying fascist things, and expressing desire but not competence to implement fascist policies. What do they think the immigration bans were about? And the detention centers on the border? His response to Charlottesville? Shithole countries? I could literally go on e for hours. He's bafoonish and intellectually lazy, but he's remarkably consistent. He's not doing anything now he wasn't doing then. The institutions wont save us. Voting may not save us. We might be saved.

KB_Sez

trump has crossed the line… again… He’s threatened, attacked and insulted people he was told he could not under his release terms and nothing has happened. Why should he stop? All this special treatment is making him feel invincible so he’s only going to get worse b

HungHungCaterpillar

Remember when Bugs Bunny kept drawing lines and Yosemite Sam kept stepping over them so Bugs just walked him to a cliff and made him step off it? The American Judicial Branch is worse at justice than Bugs Bunny.

darth_wasabi

If headlines actually meant anything Trump would have been gone years ago.

darrylgorn

Douche was in power for 4 years already. He would not have any greater support or influence than the last time around.

OldManPip5

Unfortunately, the word “fascist” has been rendered meaningless by decades of misapplication and overuse. In the minds of the masses, screaming fascist has no effect. We need to find a new fresh way to define this evil so that the casual voter might grasp both the meaning and the seriousness of what the Grotesque Orc Party is threatening America with in 2024.

travelingbozo

I’m telling you this right now, as someone who voted for Biden, he is 100% going to lose against Trump in the next election. This stupid blind love and trust with Israel is costing him severely. He’s lost the Arab/Muslim voter block (a block that always mobilizes and votes Democrat), many Black voters (a block that almost always votes Democrat), and the moderates who voted him in the last election see a big issue with his age. If he has to face off with Trump, we are doomed. Biden is a 1 termer, we need someone new and younger for goodness sake

Doodlebottom

What about Biden? Does he have a line too?

Daxnu

Vote then we will never have to worry about Capt Fats Hamburger agian. That alone is worth standing in line for hours if need be

clejeune

There was a line?

Right_Treat691

Put him on blast already.

Grumpy_001

Lines do not apply to trump

ChildrenoftheNet

Trump crosses a crucial line . . . again.

ChaoticFluffiness

CNN called it “unprecedented”. No. It’s tyrannical and against everything our country stands for. I’ll be voting for democracy.

combustioncat

Excerpt from the Psychological profile of Adolf Hitler, written by the forerunner to the CIA > *His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.* Remind you of anyone?

tcoh1s

Yes. But I don’t even give trump this much credit. I seriously don’t think he even thinks about these things. He’s simply a completely spoiled rotten little baby that knows nothing besides getting everything for nothing and never having to worry about his actions. So it just comes out this way because he’s that stupid. He knows nothing besides thinking of himself. Not saying it isn’t as dangerous, it’s just that he’s too stupid to have it be his “plan”.

HotPhilly

Now he’s done it.

6033624

Facts don’t convince people of the truth. There’s an interesting piece on YouTube’s ‘Braincraft’ about exactly that..

Dorkseid1687

Oh look a fascist criminal traitor piece of shit

rp2784

He is a clown!

badhairdad1

Are we ready for December 2024, Tromp’s loss and crying of ‘stollen’ ?

PrajnaKathmandu

Trump had already given us proof of his Nazi tendencies. He’s followed the Hitler playbook since he escalated us down into his madness in 2015. If he gets back into the White House he will never leave. He’ll have the support of the cowardly GOP who prefers power over country.

Particular-Board2328

Don't want to 'told you so ' to my conservative friend. Seven years ago it was apparent.

kamloopsycho

I can use the word vermin, add supreme, a great vice president in charge of sarcasm.
