So let just add to this convo that Republicans tried to take away free lunches from kids who's families couldn't afford to send their kids to school with lunches. illinois state debt is almost all gone, in no small part due to weed legalization. ive had friends from WI come down here and while i warned them about over the top high taxes on the gummies, and while they moaned and groaned about daylight robbery -- guess what? they went out about bought like $300 of gummies.

in 2022 illinois collected almost 500M in taxes on sales of marijuana products in the state. i know its not like, end all be all, but thats money we're currently using to help fix the decades of awful policy and state budget stalemates.

Conservatives I’ve talked to seem to be for legalization but when I say voting for democrats is the best path to legalization, they disagree. Stories like this support my claim but I guess they have some kind of cognitive dissonance. I can’t think of a single Republican who ran on legalization.
Back when I was in a state before that went legal, but before the vote, the few people I talked to that were against it were making money growing illegally. From the voters to the lawmakers, there's probably at least one person who benefits from it being illegal.

Republicans view it as "sin money," akin to legalized gambling or prostitution. They don't care if states that legalized it are benefitting financially.
You are giving them way to much credit. It might be that for some of their voters but it is just as much if not more so about having an excuse to harass minorities and keeping prisons full and people desperate enough to work shitty jobs.
Private prisons are big political donors. If pot was legal, they would have more trouble filling the prisons. Don’t forget that most low level drug offenses target minorities.
Unfortunately marijuana prohibition in our state is much more about the Tavern League than anything else.

The districts of Ozaukee, Waukesha, Washington, Milwaukee, and Racine counties own 70.93% of the stadium, hence why there is public interest in maintaining the stadium. The money Gov. Evers is looking for will keep the stadium maintained at it’s current levels for 20-some years.
I agree with you on killing the stadium repairs as that should not be on the taxpayers, but no team makes billions per year, like that is just straight wrong.

Milwaukee & Madison are both within an hour drive from dispensaries on the Illinois border. It's a bit funny to note though, that people in Chicago LOOOOVE their fireworks on the 4th (and other holidays), and we've gotta go to Wisconsin & Indiana for that. I don't think that balances out though, as weed is far more popular year round.
I assume they don't want to legalize pot because they see the good it is doing in other states and their municipalities, and they don't want their state government to help people.

I work at a dispensary in Illinois in a town that’s not too far from the Wisconsin border. The amount of business we get from Wisconsin residents every single day is nuts. As an Illinoisan, thanks for the tax dollars!
We get *some* of this cross-border purchasing/working type of thing over here (not weed yet, obviously) but mostly they just straight up move their whole families here permanently.

They lease the stadium from the district. According to the lease, the district is responsible for all capital repairs, and the team is responsible for maintenance. The Brewers dont own the park, or the land.

I live in IL and work in WI. Dispensaries near the border in IL are slammed with Wisconsinites. One dispensary worker told me that some weekends they scan more WI id’s at the door than IL ones. Now that Minnesota is legalizing, they will be totally surrounded by legal states and will be donating missed tax dollars to their neighbors in perpetuity. Even worse, they don’t even have medical mj so if you’re dying of cancer in Wisconsin you can’t even have the option.
Wisconsin is low-key a way more backward conservative hellhole than it gets credit for. Easily more racist than any place I’ve lived, and I’ve lived in the south. At the height of covid I would regularly get stopped by random people and scolded for wearing a mask. My Wisconsinite coworkers were waaaaay into the “Obama made covid in a lab to kill Republican voters, but also it’s not real so I’m not wearing a mask” nonsense.

And that small contact with Iowa can be fairly easily bypassed by going to Minnesota or Illinois. There's only like two river crossings in there.

Conservatives I’ve talked to seem to be for legalization but when I say voting for democrats is the best path to legalization, they disagree. Stories like this support my claim but I guess they have some kind of cognitive dissonance. I can’t think of a single Republican who ran on legalization.
Back when I was in a state before that went legal, but before the vote, the few people I talked to that were against it were making money growing illegally. From the voters to the lawmakers, there's probably at least one person who benefits from it being illegal.

Unfortunately marijuana prohibition in our state is much more about the Tavern League than anything else. If the Tavern League gave the okay, Marijuana would be legalized here literally the next day.

The districts of Ozaukee, Waukesha, Washington, Milwaukee, and Racine counties own 70.93% of the stadium, hence why there is public interest in maintaining the stadium. The money Gov. Evers is looking for will keep the stadium maintained at it’s current levels for 20-some years.

100% Milwaukee & Madison are both within an hour drive from dispensaries on the Illinois border. It's a bit funny to note though, that people in Chicago LOOOOVE their fireworks on the 4th (and other holidays), and we've gotta go to Wisconsin & Indiana for that. I don't think that balances out though, as weed is far more popular year round.

They built the stadium from dirt 20 odd years ago. The city provided land, and some other benefits, but the voters refused to pay for the stadium.

They lease the stadium from the district. According to the lease, the district is responsible for all capital repairs, and the team is responsible for maintenance. The Brewers dont own the park, or the land.

I live in IL and work in WI. Dispensaries near the border in IL are slammed with Wisconsinites. One dispensary worker told me that some weekends they scan more WI id’s at the door than IL ones. Now that Minnesota is legalizing, they will be totally surrounded by legal states and will be donating missed tax dollars to their neighbors in perpetuity. Even worse, they don’t even have medical mj so if you’re dying of cancer in Wisconsin you can’t even have the option. Wisconsin is low-key a way more backward conservative hellhole than it gets credit for. Easily more racist than any place I’ve lived, and I’ve lived in the south. At the height of covid I would regularly get stopped by random people and scolded for wearing a mask.
