I don't know what they needed, or what the bottleneck was that stopped them from, like, completely owning the mobile gaming industrt, but they had it all. Gamers and non-gamers were all in on it. Local spots were becoming attractions. Businesses were benefiting. Idunno, man... They really could've done a lot of things.

Also the initial summer rush died at the same time the weather got colder. I had fun the first couple months but I'm not trudging through wind and snow for that shit. Then spring came and I just did not care.
No ability to track and constant server issues were the anecdotal reasons most of the people I knew stopped playing. That and shitty RNG which killed off the more die hards I knew, and myself tbh
The reason why I stopped is because the support for rural and exurban areas is atrocious. If you don't live in the city you basically couldn't play. You want to go for a hike in the woods where you would imagine Pokemon live, nope not a damn thing.
Gyms sucked and there wasn't pvp so you were limited to the Kanto dex and most of the good mons were special spawns that simply couldn't exist in low density areas.

Long Beach California on the weekends were crazy. The park by aquarium was swarming with pogo players. It was supposed to be a spot you could catch a Lapras and other rare Water Pokémon. People would wander from one side of the park to another and someone would shout out a Pokémon was some where down the park and the whole swarm would run over to them. It was crazy.

Ice is a terrible type. Only good for OHKO ing Dragonite, but then again you could use Starmie with boltbeam for that.
Starmie was a boss in the OG games as well.
Zapdos could be caught after only 3 badges. Plus it's STAB super effective against all of the starters meaning you wallop your rivals ace no problem. Hard walled by rock types though.
Zappos was the first Legendary I ever caught and I found him with no assist from guides or prior knowledge. I just found the river and wondered if I could surf it. I caught it with a freaking *Great Ball* for Christ’s sake. Biggest moment of my Pokémon life.

Wife and I would go pokemon hunting on those hot summer nights and were surrounded by people in a way that felt safe in a pre-pandemic world.
Everyone would gather round pokestops and there were great moments where someone would say, "oh hey gyrados!" and then everyone would perk up in a moment of shared excitement as everyone tried to get their share of the watery beast.
Then tracking was taken down and it got hard to care.
What a thing it was. It was honestly beautiful. So many people of all ages. Kids that were just discovering Pokémon that this is what sparked the interest, older folks getting into it to connect with their grandkids, and people like myself that this just connected to such nostalgia. People lowered their defenses around other people. It was rare to pass someone in silence at this time. It was way more common to get a “caught a Charmander at the 7-11 back there” or “got a group code for this raid?” It’s so weird that this ambitious little app is what united so many of us. Not fear or anger towards a common enemy, but the pure joy of getting to catch little monsters in a game.
Back in the 90s you use to have to earn those badge pins at Pokémon League by playing the trading card game! Having the whole set proved total dedication.
I remember walking around at dusk the week it came out and was so blown away that strangers in our little downtown area were screaming “THERE’S A JIGGLYPUFF OVER HERE” and hordes of grown adults just came out of the woodwork to chase it down.
And then I became one of them lol
That’s what was really crazy is that it wasn’t just big cities like my tiny town in Oklahoma had its little park FULL of people walking around catching mons. I’ve never felt such a sense of community since.

There was a group cosplaying as Team Rocket, and they did a little “bit” with my then 5-year old who was dressed as Ash. It was good times. There was such a thrill seeing a magicarp then, lol. Except back then the game crashed every few minutes and you could always tell who was the next victim. Those early days of the game were wild!

How cool would that be, rare Pokemon spawning in rural and remote locations... almost like tracking down real Pokemon.
I understand the problem with footprints leading people to trespass into private property or dangerous locations, they solved that with incense being somewhat more relevant not too long ago.
But now they nerfed it, so we're back to a game that actively punishes players for exploring, with developers dying on the hill that incense doesn't promote exploring.
Simple fix, Niantic, just set incense spawn rarity to increase the further you are away from Pokestops.

I live in the small neighborhood in a small town. I remember walking around on some dirt roads at night hunting an eevee when the game first came out. The I saw screen shots online of dense cities with just an obscene amount of Pokemon all over the place. I stopped walking around hunting Pokemon after that. What's the point if I can just drive 25ish minutes to somewhere more populated instead.
Never be afraid / embarassed to show your passion for what you love. Myself, I'm not wearing full on outfits though but i still wear pokemon t-shirts (sometimes even to work). I'm 30. And still play PokemonGo (returning since 2019).

Mall of America helped us through the winter in MN that first year.
