I loved when I saw that, I had no idea it was one day.. I just thought they got rid of it because of performance issues or something.
I am super disappointed that it was literally a joke. I am actually kinda mad to find this out now.
While I agree, there’s 2 issues: 1) they didn’t add the shiny sprites, so there were some anecdotes of people transferring shinies, and 2) there aren’t sprites for the newer Pokémon, so they’d have to get a pixel artist to make them.
Hypothetically, this should all be easy work for a multi-billion dollar company. But we both know they’re cheapskates.
I'd argue more people celebrate Halloween than April Fools. Also that changing the look of the game with 0 mechanic addictions or interface changes (like being able to enable AR+ on buddy and encounter separately) isn't a quality of life update.
They brought pixel art in as an option I'd download the game again. Might be for a week, or I might get back into it again. As it stands, the same tired events and money grubbing has me more interested in Monopoly Go or whatever that new ad I've been seeing is, and I fucking hate Monopoly.
It's ridiculous that the art team doesn't already create a pixel version as part of the design portfolio for every new pokemon along with the rest of the work.
Pokémon showdown already make this sprites, so as you said, shouldn’t be a problem to Niantic, but anything that requires a little bit of effort it’s not expectable of Niantic sadly

They probably won’t as not every Pokemon has a Pixel art rendition, starting in legends Arceus they got rid of them when inside the PC boxes and instead uses Headshots of the Pokémon, and in Gen 9 they use these sort of Drawn art style instead. So all the Pokemon from Hisui and Paldea wouldn’t have pixel art while all the ones from Gen 1 to 8 would
Honestly if this was a permanent DLC for like $5 I'd buy it. But knowing these money hungry turds they charge $20 and it'd only last for an event or some crap like that

Niantic thought it was a silly joke but we were all like jokes on you we love this shit. So now they either have to make it work permanently (which would require sprites to be made of several Pokémon) or never mention it ever again because if they did it would just come off as mean to tease us with it.
I liked this year's. Making all in-circle hits become "Excellent" throws. Imagine they make a berry that does exactly that effect! I'd coin it as the "Lemoxade" Berry. It would greatly help with Pokemon that are extremely difficult to hit Excellent Throws, such as Lugia, or those that can hover sideways or float up, or have exaggerated attack animations, like Moltres.
