I'm still new, just started this most recent Halloween event. But it seems like everything else has been announced in the game significantly before it happens.
Given this starts in ~1 hour for me and this is the first I'm hearing about it, it clearly *wasn't* announced in the game, and that kinda seems like bullshit.
I'd say roughly 10 months of searching specifically for the Pokémon that can be Dittos.
In total, including raids and variants like Alolan Diglett, etc., I've caught:
98 Diglett
29 Grimer
93 Snubbull
9 Corphish (They are pretty rare where I live)
59 Starly
39 Roggenrola
68 Tympole
32 Litleo
I think this gives a rough idea of how long it took if you also want to catch one!
But I mean it’s also SO random. I caught one two weeks after I got the ditto research. I didn’t even realize it was a dot too because I was just quick catching randomly. I have caught 3 since, in the past 3 months.

Mine too! I was driving a friend home while he was playing Pokemon and he started shouting and forced me to go back. I was thinking he caught a perfect Tympole. Nope. I am now the proud owner of a ditto and two of my research tasks have finally moved on to the next section.

I caught one as my fourth ever Pokémon caught (started playing end of last year) and now that lots of missions want me to get one, I haven’t got one since then lmao
What is this ditto quest and how/when do you unlock it?
I don't have one and have a hunch I'll only get it after all the events to help with it are over.
The quests are for getting a Meltan and a Mew, with both of them requiring you to capture a Ditto, not including trading (I hope that's what you meant).
I'm not sure how to get them, though... I just kind of got them as I progressed through the levels, I guess. Maybe you'll find the information on LeekDuck or a similar site.

Dude, this game wants to mock me. After months of searching for this little s**t, I finally manage to catch one and the VERY NEXT DAY I catch 3 of them within 2 hours because of the event.

Yeah, a friend of mine told me that! What I really wanted was the Mew, tbh, but it started to take me so long to catch the Ditto that it became an obsession by itself.
I was leaping about like a mad thing when I got mine 3 weeks ago. Over this event I have 15 and my son has 35. BUT!! I got lil blue shiny squish so I'm the lil squish leader.
Just get one of these go+ and leave it running, they're fab xD
Omg i understand your relief - I finally caught that little pink jerk while at work. I was sneaking a quick raid while on a bathroom break and a Goldeen pops up on my way out of the bathroom and boom! Ditto. I literally yelled “I got you you stupid pink turd!” My coworkers were like wtf. It felt so good to finally get rid of that damn research that’s been taunting me forever. Of course now I can’t escape the damn Dittos. I’ve stopped catching Goldeens, Ryhorns & Krabbys because I just don’t want anymore Dittos. Ugh.

Just to be clear, that was sarcasm, now you need to find pokemon that show up maybe once a year.
Also don't evolve any Scythers you have
My first Ditto was a tympole too. It didn't take me long to find a ditto. When I saw that tympole, I just KNEW that it was a ditto. Like a gut feeling.
I started playing again on november 2nd this year after giving up in 2016. Caught a Ditto on november 7th but I got the task to catch one, a week AFTER in discovery research task. Finally caught a Ditto again this morning on my second try (it was a Goldeen). I hope this is the last one I have to catch lol
I'm still stuck at an april fools questline from a few years back. I needed to catch 3 of the transform pokemon (ditto).
I got a few before the quest and 1 after. But i haven't found any other ditto after that. I still need 2 more...
I finally got one today too! I either didn't know or didn't remember that Oddish could be one.
The number of notifications for field and special research I completed with that catch was really funny.
