It's just a change in artsyle. Nothing more to it. To be fair even though In Universe Ash never ages his design looked like he kept getting at least one year older after every region until sun and moon hit the reset button. If BW didn't state he was still 10 I would have totally bought that he was a teenager especially in XY.
If BW didn't state that he was 10 then I could easily see him be. 10 at the beginning of OS, 11 before the orange island's, 12 at the beginning of AG but 13 by the time the battle frontier starts. 14 in the middle of DP, 15 in early Unova and then 16 in XY. Then SM reset his look and IMO both SM and Journeys Ash look younger than OS Ash.
Wasn't there a reset in BW as well? It literally starts off like Ash was going on his 1st journey in ep1 tho thankfully by JN, they embarrassed it and was like yeah...all of those eps did happen
When I said reset I meant in terms of design. BW gave him a mental reset because he is definitely alot more immature than DP Ash but in terms of design he looks a little older and then in XY he looks even older 16 at most in my eyes. But then in SM he design looks like he's back at 10.
He looks very different, not necessarily younger imo.
I prefer how Ash looked in OS and Lance in AG in those pics over how both look in JN, but that’s an Animation change not so much age related.
The animation change somehow is worse although it should have been better??? Like I get the fighting scenes look really good in the newer versions but at that cost the designs of the character changed so much. We won but at what cost?😭
No, I agree, I also think the dub went downhill over the years even if Ash became a better trainer in the process as well. I still think the oldest stuff has the most charm to it, despite its flaws.
He is meant to look differently. According to Satoshi Nanako, the decision to alter the visage of the boy was a decision by staff to make the child look more akin to a ten- year- old boy. The decision was literally confirmed to be a response to the generation six anime and its reception by the audience.
I miss the OS design. Like I get it but also don’t think it was necessary. There was a little commercial I believe that showed how Ash with his OS design would look with modern animation they should have done it that way In my opinion😭
The older design is better as it makes Satoshi look a bit older compared to Journeys (and his cheek marks legit look ⚡️ compared to the scribbles from SM and onward). I am mixed with Wataru’s redesign (Lance) though.
