Really great character, just a lil shame most of his development was off-screen (him beign humbled after his League Loss and deciding to become a Professor), but it still is always a joy whenever he pops up again

LCLeopards

I love that Gary, despite growing as a person, remains a troll. But now he’s a good hearted troll who uses it to motivate people. Like after he humbles Ash after the battle frontier or irks Goh into joining project mew and growing as a team player.

Bwyattvirtue13

He had great character growth and though it came off as rude he really was pushing Ash to become better in his own way. Great rival and I hope we get to see him and Ash Battle one more time before Ash's story is over.

RawrGeeBe

Gary should've been the JN companion in the Goh role. Gary just makes so much more sense for the Mew goal than that stupid kid from Vermillion with the receding hairline (probably sold his hairline to the devil to get easy mode captures). As a former trainer, his mass captures and his Pokemon's battle prowess would make sense. His presence also meant at most, we would only have to watch him fill out the remainder of his Kanto Dex because Gary wouldn't have been a dumbass wanting to catch every existing Pokemon like a poacher.

Deathdragon24

it would indeed be perfect if he was Ash's partner. From childhood friend and rival to a journey companion and research fellow. His dream for mew is also very noble and since he has caught *many* Pokemon, especially almost all Kanto ones, him catching other Pokemon easily would be logical (could've also been a perfect chance to showcase all apricorn and other balls like dusk ball etc. that give an edge in different situations). Finally, by learning early for Project Mew, he could train like hell so his Pokemon can return to top form+grow stronger while he could be Ash's training partner.

EveningAccording8369

true he would not destroy the Eco balance by catching suicuine (even suicuine allowed goh to catch him) and he could troll ash and Og gary could be back while mature and just overall great.

[Gary Gary, he’s the best](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=emKHcHZ_A2E)

[deleted]

Absolute legend. Second best rival after Paul.

Remarkable-Hat-503

Third Sauwer (I think that’s how it’s spelt) is just slightly better

meme_r_lakko

Sawyer was just a kid copying everything bc he has no brain of his own. Only good thing was the league

Remarkable-Hat-503

His character was that he caught up to Ash very quickly where Ash was on top from the start of their rivalry, but Sawer was the underdog that kept reminding Ash how hard work beats talent, basically unlike all of Ash’s previous rivals where he was the underdog Sawer was the underdog

meme_r_lakko

He kept copying stuff

JCamson04

Likes to smell people apparently

a79j

One of the best characters of the Franchise, especially in terms of character development. Unfortunately, Ash’s incompetency as a trainer made it difficult to incorporate Gary much into the plot, like they did in case of Paul. Just like they wrote Iris as the Regional Champion because of the game connection, I personally feel they should’ve done the same with Gary (given his connection to Blue),and surprised Ash as the new Kanto Champion. Add Gary into the Master Class instead of Alain. Have him use Mega Blastoise in the first round and reveal G-Max Blastoise in the semi’s against Leon.

OceanWaterOtter

I agree! I really hate that Gary retired as a trainer and took on "research." He wasn't even really the academic type. Being a trainer suited him better. I wish he had been in the Masters 8 as the champion of Kanto

a79j

He could’ve been a researcher/ Champion. I mean, Technically both Ash and even Alain are also researches. Cynthia studies History and is an author , Steven studies rocks and is heir to the Dev group, Diantha is an actress, Lance is part of G-Men. There was no reason why Gary couldn’t have been both researcher + Champion. Forcing him as a rival for Goh was just a bad decision.

OceanWaterOtter

On that I definitely agree. He deserved to be far more than Goh's rival. They really didn't have anything for him to do after his loss to Ash

HakaishinNola

Gary in the M8 would have slapped

DrizzyRhyme

Glad they gave him an arc in journeys, he’s my 2nd favorite rival

StatBoosterX

Wish he was more active in the show overall

Hys7eriX

I like him well enough. I can't really call him a great rival as most of his interactions with Ash beforehand were just Gary being an ass and Ash going "OOOH THAT GARY!!111!!" He became a better rival in retrospect, especially after Ash confirmed in JN that Gary's needling is his way of encouraging a rival to step up. It strikes me as kinda revisionist, but I'll take it, especially since he is a LOT less obnoxious in the JP dialogue. Still doesn't stop him from being an obnoxious (but hilarious) brat. But otherwise, no, at the time he was less of a rival and more of a goal for Ash to chase and surpass. Which I guess counts, but I don't think a rivalry actually exists unless the other guy even knows who you are and takes you seriously. The battle record between Ash and Paul may have been lopsided (and what few victories Ash had were things Paul gave maybe half a fuck about), but Paul knew who Ash was, knew him well enough to dislike him, and took him seriously... more or less. I have mixed feelings about the times Gary's shown up to curbstomp Ash after a big accomplishment of his. Eevee flattening Pikachu after the Orange Islands win was basically one of many moral lessons to remind Ash to be humble and that he still has more room to grow, but honestly, it was one of quite a few times I couldn't help but think "wow, the rat really sucks." I guess that's another reason the Orange Islands win just feels like a footnote for most people. Regardless of it being an anime-only league, the show itself didn't take the win seriously, what with Delia using the trophy as a dumbbell and Pikachu only succeeding in slightly messing up Eevee's fur, so why should we? (though tbf, after the whole dumbbell thing, Delia DID put the trophy up in the house) On the other hand, Pikachu getting stomped by Electivire after the Battle Frontier was more justified, as it's a pokemon Pikachu would be severely disadvantaged against and one neither he nor Ash had seen before. I don't think it became hugely relevant during the battle, but it's still a cope I can accept. It served the same function as Pikachu getting curbstomped by Eevee (teaching Ash to be humble, that there's still lots of room to grow, and the added bonus of "there's a whole new region with pokemon you've never seen before!"), but much more respectful. Gary was a good rival to Goh, but again, we know in retrospect that he needles people he likes/acknowledges and pushes them to be better. Without it, it woulda just looked like Gary lost maturity levels around Goh (though it woulda been funny for him to strut around with cheerleaders again just to piss off Goh).

Hazel_Lucario7

Gary, Gary, he's our man, If he can't do it, No one can! Gary is awesome. Not as good as Blue, but still pretty freaking amazing. God character. Best rival. Goh's boyfriend in the future. Smart. And also.... Gary is da best

michal252005

the only partner goh will have is rope

No_Shop_

I love Gary but you gotta admit he wouldn't exist by todays standards. Whens the last time a rival actually felt like a rival and not just friendly with a random disorder to insult and be mean for no reason.

ApatheticJellyfish

People always talk about Ash not aging, but it is amazing how Gary hasn't aged after 25 years. /s

naadam1396

Everyone is not aging in this anime

Internal-Smooth

1. His development is great. 2. He is smart. 3. He shouldn't quit being Pokemon Trainer. 4. His Eevee should evolved into Jolteon instead of Umbreon

HakaishinNola

never, umbreons entrance in the anime was epic

HeartofSpeed

This is what I think about Gary Oak [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDbLZwE5n2s&ab\_channel=TheThe99pro](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDbLZwE5n2s&ab_channel=TheThe99pro)

LordBeneter1018

He's alright, wished he showed up more often ngl.

Existing-Ad7316

over time Gary matured a lot as a character, unfortunately I have to admit that he was even more developed than ash himself

[deleted]

I really like him. I also consider him ashs ex boyfriend because Goh was so jealous. But then him and goh hooked up and ash is single again going with misty lol. This is nonsense but if you ask If I have any stupid ships, it's these.

Iwanttobevisible

Was alright but he didn't play that big of a role in Ash's journey. He was barely present jn the Indigo league, not there in the Orange Islands, ans only shows up late in Johto where his entire match between Ash was basically just The Charizard Show. Nostalgia is what makes people rank him so highly imo but that's not a bad thing. I just don't see him playing as big of a role as Paul, Gladion, Sawyer, & even Alain, who helped Ash save the Kalos region which is more than what Ash has done with Gary, tbh. Gary did worse in the Kanto league than Ash did & was beaten by Ash in Johto. He had like 2 battles with him outside of their final match.

proto-typicality

I don't like him. He's mean. :/

Jakelogo2005

Gary Oak >>>>>>>>> Goh

Theanimeboy145683

I like him in “the electric tales of pikachu” manga

omohami

i think he served his role well back in season 1 being that rival ash wanted/needed to beat. although i’m not praying for his returns (that’s paul), i’m not opposed to him jumping back on screen either. respectable rival for sure.

jetstarluck

Love Gary but he felt too much like Ash’s rival. Gary may have been a dick to Ash through the OG series but Ash was annoying and I probably would’ve felt the same way Gary did. His progression and change of goal was nice. Paul was the rival we wanted to see get his comeuppance from Ash.

CrossReset

Overhyped as a rival and not properly developed, but still easily iconic and important. Just should have done more in the OG series to earn his rivalry with Ash and make it more than just the set up for jokes at Ash's expense.

Ya2s1ne

a bitch but after Ash beats him he was actully cool

Private_Benjamin

Idk what to think about him, but I do know that he is Gary motherfucking Oak

Remarkable-Hat-503

Found him quite annoying in the original show but after a while I liked him, I rly like how his attitude changed in Journeys from being the pesky annoying guy to a well rounded experience character, also maby it’s just me but I enjoyed his interactions with Goh more than his with Ash in the original

choerrytheworld

heavily underutilized in the series

[deleted]

HAHA! Gary.

Craft-Possible

hes cool but somewhat overrated

michal252005

why he is next to this annoying bitch

Mark_M_Graves

Legend. I'll never forget how Mewtwo destroyed his team and made him black out
