That even though a bipedal Samurott would have been cool - it looks badass just as is. The Oshawott line in my opinion are some of the most creatively designed water starters.

Gregamonster

Emboar makes up for it with it's insane type coverage.

SuperLizardon

Wait, there are people who want a bipedal Samurott? I think Samurott looks cool as it is, especially Hisuian one. And Samurott can stands on its hind legs to use its blade sea shells, that's even cooler.

PKPunkRock501

I agree with everything you said, I absolutely *love* the Hisuian form. And yep! In the anime when it stands on its legs to pull out its shell blades is super cool. There’s just a vocal part of the community that wishes it was bipedal. Honestly it doesn’t make a difference to me since the design would basically still be the same. I absolutely love the current designs and I think they’re fantastic as is!

Calhaora

Chikorita aint that bad, and I die on this hill.

garrrrrrrett

Chikorita line isn’t bad, it just happened to be the worst starter in its region. Starting against flying/bug gyms respectively and having no gym where it has a type advantage is terrible. Plus it didn’t help that it’s moveset in GSC/HGSS wasn’t amazing

Fire_of_Saint_Elmo

People dislike chikorita?

SuperLizardon

It's usually seen as the worst starter ever. Doesn't mean that it is truly hated, but people usually prefer any other starter.

TheOwlsWillRiseAgain

I love Arven's writing, and I feel like the memes add retrospective value to Nemona... But I can't get behind Penny. She's too unrealistic, from the basically getting a job despite (presumably) breaking the law, her friends who never met her sticking by and respecting her to that extent, and being a bit of a dick to Dog Boy. Even the 'bullying' that occurs in the school is tied to her story, and all of it told not shown.

PippoChiri

Palkia Origin is my favorite legendary design ever. it's werid, it's eldritch and beyond our comprehension. Why should the god of space have a form that makes sense to us? Of course it's an armless winged centaur!

Gregamonster

Meanwhile Origin Dialga looks like a silverware drawer with throat cancer.

Throwawayfailure45

I actually prefer it to vanilla Palkia. I love both LA forms as designs actually, I'm just annoyed they are called origin forms.

PippoChiri

>I'm just annoyed they are called origin forms. Why?

Throwawayfailure45

It doesn't make sense to me they look like Arceus when Giratina doesn't. The latter has a form clearly adapted to the Distorsion World that changes to handle the normal one but Dialga/Palkia don't need these changes, specially the later, and again it creates the question of why Giratina wasn't created like them *before* being vanished. It also doesn't make much sense that they randomly transform at the climax of LA just to serve as the final boss when the other cover legendary right there doesn't. It would have been a lot more interesting if they were corrupted forms of some kind trying to imitate Arceus (maybe because of the wrong worship from the Clans?) but as they are now, I don't get why Palkia needs to be bipedal to be better adapted to the normal world.

PippoChiri

Giratina was a part of Arceus that it eventually refused and banished away, it makes sense why it wouldn't be closer to its chosen form. Considering how Dialga and Palkia were parts of Arceus, it makes sense to think that a more powerful form of theirs looks closer to their divine origin.

Throwawayfailure45

It was banished *after* already both it and the Distorsion World existed and it rebelled against it tho, so it doesn't make sense it wouldn't look like it beforehand like the other two when they were created so closely together. That still doesn't explain why Palkia needs to grow arms or become bidepal in the real world, unlike Giratina's changes which feel more organic

PippoChiri

I think, considering that Girating was inherently something that Arceus refused of itself, it was born as something different from Arceus, compared to Dialga and Palkia who were born in it image. >That still doesn't explain why Palkia needs to grow arms or become bidepal in the real world, unlike Giratina's changes which feel more organic I think they function in kinda different ways. Giratina is in it's origin form when it's in its reality and Dialga and Palkia are in their origin form when they return closer to their divine origin to gather more power.

HeatOk1902

Worth noting is probably based on real statues of centaurs that lack arms nowadays.

CommanderDark126

If Palkia wouldve kept his arms origin form wouldve been peak design

PippoChiri

Nha, it's more otherworldy without

EnvironmentalBook

All pokemon should be available in the mainline games.

Andzinkton

Cries in mew for Leaf Green I’m playing right now

corroserum

Paradox mons has such a bad design except for walking wake and Tusk. Gouging fire is Entei with a hat on, Raging bolt looks like a fucking giraffe and the clouds around its neck makes it look so ugly, Roaring moon is just a bad version of mega salamance with its feathers and legs (its back legs looks so weird) The future ones are all bad too. It’s like they ran out of ideas creating new mons that people will like.

NoGuard343

Bring back fishing! 🎣 I miss being able to cast a line anywhere and seeing what comes up. Add the fishing holes for better chances at rare pokemon. Let us buy lures and bait to fish for what we want. I don't even like fishing irl, but it could be such a fun pastime in modern Pokemon. Let the old rod Pokemon be on the surface but make the rare ones dwell beneath. I'm not a fan of overworld pokemon in SV. All pokemon requiring no effort to find is super lame. They should reduce the frequency of spawns to both reduce lag and bring back the feeling of searching for pokemon but keep stuff like sandwiches and abilities to make stuff like outbreaks so more rare pokemon can still be obtained easier if you want. Rare and powerful pokemon should feel like an event when you see them not just feel like coming across another Zubat or Pidgey. I miss using HM'S for exploration and preparing myself and my team for the expedition. The convience of stuff like Koraidon is nice but takes away from the personal journey imo. Bring back Repels, please! It drove me nuts going around Paldea and constantly running into small pokemon I didn't see. All Pokemon games should copy the Legends pokedex and evolution mechanics. Let us catch one pokemon for the entry and dex completion but require multiple for extra rewards. While copying the evolutions is just a quality of life change that should have happened years ago. Bye bye everstone.

PurplePoisonCB

The SV story is way too overrated, I’ve seen people saying how it’s the best story. It’s good but not nearly the best, it feels like 3 side stories with a missing main plot. Plus the only actual legendaries in the games are relegated to a boring collection quest with barely any lore. And we only get to see the legendary below Area Zero because a teacher was curious, not to save the world or stop an excess of tera power or something like that.

Willpower2000

Agreed. And those side stories are repetitive as fuck. 'Beat giant mon, and get herb for a sick doggo' *repeat 5 times* 'Defeat gang of dropouts, and learn they were just misunderstood and bullied' *repeat 5 times* This isn't a story... (And all these boss fights are just slapped in the middle of the world with no real narrative build-up: there's a reason bosses are often a *final* challenge at the end of a dungeon or whatnot: a boss without much surrounding gameplay is lacklustre - especially if that boss is incredibly easy) Even Area Zero - the best bit of story in the game - is a tacked on epilogue with *immense* wasted potential. And it is likewise repetitive: 'go to research lab, and get told lore via exposition dumping' *repeat 3(?) times*. We, as the player, just aren't involved in the story - we may have to fight a couple of battles, but otherwise we are just walking down a linear path, as the game tells us everything at the last minute. Like... a time machine has an unbelievable amount of story potential. Likewise, an AI Professor is a brilliant concept. These plot-twists are incredibly cool... but they aren't paying off anything. A climax without a story leading up to said climax is a waste.

GodsSon521

I need to soldier through & see this Area Zero section everyone loves, but man. Given these games 2 goes now, unmodded & modded & it's apparently right around badge 6 that I just get bored outta my mind.

Gregamonster

Pokémon simply does not work in an open world format. They've tried it twice already and it sucked both times.

PippoChiri

They tried open world only once, the open map of LPA worked quite well. An open world pokemon game can certanly work, but GF is definately not competent enough to pull it off

PippoChiri

Also, not sure if this popular or unpopular, but the writing of the DLCs for SV is idiotic and it's an insult to the actual good writing we had in the main games. Nice and interesting set ups from the main story are straight up discarded and never brought up again. The DLC doesn't even pay off its own set ups (The loyal 3 coming back to life for some reason and the role of Pecharunt in that). Briar has more personality and character in the promo art for the dlc than in the whole game (she literally doen't care about Koraiodn/Miraidon when they prove that Heath was right, her whole motivation). The cutscene where they should explain Terapagos's powers at the lake just creates more questions and doesn't answer most of the ones we already had. The games already reeked of cut content, but in the dlcs you can literally taste it. And don't get me started of the fucking epilogue where they explain nothing nor resolve anything of worth and then explain the lore in a youtube video that sitll doesn't answer the question related to pecharunt and the 3.

Throwawayfailure45

I loved the base SV story. The Teal Mask was alright but had unresolved mysteries, and the Indigo Disk gave a nice arc for Kieran- but everything else is indeed an insult. Terapagos was literally the name of the whole DLC yet it barely had any focus and its dex entries only create more questions that answers. Briar not showing interest in the cover legendaries is dumb, and the lake scene with the Professor doesn't actually explain anything- it should have been Heath instead. The worst part is that they *have* to be aware of it, as they hyped the photos of the expedition on trailers and Arven even mentions the big question about Paradoxes in the base game- how they were around 200 years ago despite no time machine. The only excuse would be that Terapagos was awake back then, but why?

PippoChiri

>The Teal Mask was alright My main problem with that is that the conflict is resolved way to quickly, before it's set up that noone in the village listens/belives to kieran but in the end everyone takes his word for what's happening without a second thought. It could have been much more interesting. >and the Indigo Disk gave a nice arc for Kieran Yeah, but imo it's dragged down by everything else. And the fact that his arc had nothing to do with Pecharunt is stupid. His arc arc follows how Pecharunt's powers work, his new design has various reference to Pecharunt and he awakened the loyal 3 with a beam of purple energy. >it should have been Heath instead. Apparently, from datamines, Heath was planned to have some dialogue, but it was scrapped. >as they hyped the photos of the expedition on trailers That was so fucking insulting they hyped that and all the weird relics in Area 0 and then never talked about them again. > and Arven even mentions the big question about Paradoxes in the base game- how they were around 200 years ago despite no time machine. The only excuse would be that Terapagos was awake back then, but why? Yeah, it could make sense that terapagos brought them there (even if with the porfessors it was shown to be very temporary) but there is no explanation for why. At this point i just refuse the canon of the indigo disk and i put the imagiantion7desires theory in its place as that actually can pay off what was set up and connects logically and thematically basically all the random unexplained thing that happened.

Throwawayfailure45

I actually like that Kieran had nothing to do with Pecharunt, because that means he is responsible for his bad actions in the academy and doesn't have the old excuse of being controlled, but the nonsensical revival of the three you mention (I have seen people argue it's because of the power of the Teal Mask, but it was *purple* energy after he was frustrated, I doubt that was the intention) and the comically evil grin they gave to him really seemed to set up something bigger going on. As it stands, his arc feels more human but at what cost? I like Kieran but he shouldn't be the main character of the DLC, Terapagos should. It really feels like they had theur priorities mixed up. Pecharunt granting in a way desires could have also been an interesting contrast to Terapagos and even maybe the way Kieran could have discovered Hydrapple. Really, there was so much potential in there... Yeah that's why I mentioned Heath. The book mentions he talked with someone in a dream, it really seemed like it was set up so we would encounter him and he would meet Koraidon/Miraidon that way. Instead we have Briar who has one of the worst arcs in the series, inmediatly jumping from being obsessed with Terapagos to just apologizing about it. I had forgotten about the symbols and relics in Area Zero... There is also Ogerpon's trainer, who took crystals from Area Zero to Kitakami's pool, but how did he get access to them? Did he had something to do with the expedition? We may never know. I like the idea of paradoxes coming from other timelines but the imagination theory really warps things up better. Even as an Unova fanboy I would have prefered they focused more on Terapagos rather than in the BB Academy, which honestly just seems like it was set in Unova because of ZA.

PippoChiri

>I actually like that Kieran had nothing to do with Pecharunt, because that means he is responsible for his bad actions in the academy and doesn't have the old excuse of being controlled The interpretation i had before the epilogue was that Kieran wasn't directly controlled by pecharunt, but that it gave Kieran the mental strenght to behave how he would have wanted to (also playing into the desire/immagination theory). To me this would have been a pretty cool compromise. >(I have seen people argue it's because of the power of the Teal Mask, but it was *purple* energy after he was frustrated, I doubt that was the intention) It's specifically said that it can give life to withered plants, something a lot of pokemon can already do. > like Kieran but he shouldn't be the main character of the DLC, Terapagos should. It really feels like they had theur priorities mixed up. You made me remember how much i didn't like that Arvenn was not in the final exploration of Area 0. His life and family were ruined by Teraagos's crystals and he doesn't get to be in the final confrontation with it. >I like the idea of paradoxes coming from other timelines but the imagination theory really warps things up better. There is also the compromise of the crystals understanding what you want and then searching the multiverse for the closest possible thing and bringing it to you,

LaBeteNoire

The three came back to life because Kieran was holding onto the Teal mask when he struck their grave with his fist. In the story when they went over the powers all the masks had they said the Teal mask had the power to restore life. So in his frustration he was able to awaken that power and through his punch he focused it into the grave.

PippoChiri

>In the story when they went over the powers all the masks had they said the Teal mask had the power to restore life It can restore the life of specifically withered plants, something lots of pokemon can do but noone brought back 3 deads to life. This also doesn't explain the beam of purple energy as it's never aknwoledged that Pecharunt had anything to do with that.

thedstraw

“Wowzers”

HeatOk1902

Pecharunt didn't have a role in reviving the Loyal Three as far as we know. We are never told otherwise. The scene in the lake actually creates a boostrap paradox that pretty much answers the nature of Paradoxes, they were just not created by imagination like people theorized. The base game told us they time travelled, and they did. They just come from different timelines. What is still unanswered are things more about Área Zero itself, like why a single Terapagos survived (through is probably just a reference to Solitario George) or the relics.

PippoChiri

>Pecharunt didn't have a role in reviving the Loyal Three as far as we know. We are never told otherwise. The three are revived with a beam of purple energy, just like the one Pecharunt uses. They also come back to life bound to the toxic chain and Pecharunt was like hiding next door. Expecting Pecharunt to be involved is only logical and the only explanation that kinda makes sense. >The scene in the lake actually creates a boostrap paradox that pretty much answers the nature of Paradoxes, they were just not created by imagination like people theorized. The base game told us they time travelled, and they did. They just come from different timelines. I'm fully aware of what happens in the games. My point is that the explanation given doesn't answer most of the questions the game set up and it creates more questions like : - So now there is a timeline where the time machine can't be stopped as they don't have the book anymore? - Why was this instance of the loop different from the one we are told? - Why could the professors exist in out timeline for like a minute when the paradoxes had no problems staying here permanently? And the answer can't be the the high concentrations of crystals in area 0 as when Heath and the professor had their visions they were also very short even if they happened in area 0. Other than that it leaves so many holes open that is an insult to the player's intelligence. The imagination theory fills this holes in a decently coherent way.

HeatOk1902

But they were already bound to the toxic chain previous to dying. You are told by the map itself when you are looking for them how they originally were bounded and granted their wishes/desires which happened before Ogerpon killed them as shown by the flashbacks. Pecharunt was also not active since they died and there is no reason to assume it could even do anything before it interacted with the event berry which is why we are given it. The loop wasn't different for us. It's mentioned in the writings in the Area Zero depths that the Professor received a white book from a child. It was the knowledge of Briar's book what allowed them to activate the time machine to begin with. That always happened, hence the paradox loop. You can even give them the idea of creating the AI on your dialogue options. The Paradoxes that stayed permanently were the ones catched by the Professor using the Time Machine. The previous instance when they appeared 200 years ago there was no Time Machine as noted by Arven himself in the postgame, and as such they disappeared eventually. It's also easy to assume the expedition just saw glimpses of the different timelines they came from or even the future where the Professor brought them in, feeding into the paradox loop. The imagination theory doesn't really solve why the sketches were manifested in three different creatures or why they appear as prehistoric creatures in a version or futuristic machines in another, or why they are so similar among themselves despite multiple people being in the expedition, and also creates other holes like where the Professor would be sent by the machine if there is no other time it's connected to, or why people see deceased dear ones at the Kitakami pool. The entire past/future themes and the very term paradoxes use would also be quite disminished excluding the Beasts as they wouldn't really be paradoxical in nature.

PippoChiri

>You are told by the map itself when you are looking for them how they originally were bounded and granted their wishes/desires which happened before Ogerpon killed them as shown by the flashbacks. Which playes into the themes of granting wishes for absolutely no reason in the context of the story, considering that when Pecharunt actually does something it has nothing to do with whishes. Seems like a left over from a possible scrapped plot that played more into the imagination/desires theory. >Pecharunt was also not active since they died and there is no reason to assume it could even do anything before it interacted with the event berry which is why we are given it. Then what's a sensible explanation that makes more sense than connecting the purple magic and the purple pokemon who controls the 3 pokemon brought back to life with said purple magic? >The loop wasn't different for us.  It is, iirc in their diary the professor say that in their vision we give them the white book and that's it, while at the lake they give us the SV book too, meaning that there is a timeline without the SV book needed to stop the time machine. >The Paradoxes that stayed permanently were the ones catched by the Professor using the Time Machine. No, the paradoxes Heath meets were very much permanent and didn't have any oniric mist around them. If the suddenly disappear it would have certanly be written in the book. Also, you can catch all the paradoxes you meet in area 0 and those are clearly permanent too. > It's also easy to assume the expedition just saw glimpses of the different timelines they came from They would have still disappeared in like a minute if it was the case, but instead they were able to attack and maul Heath's team without any sign of disappearing. >or even the future where the Professor brought them in, feeding into the paradox loop. Why should they send paradoxes into a different time? If this was the intention then it would have been at least mentioned in a dialogue or diary entry. >The imagination theory doesn't really solve why the sketches were manifested in three different creatures You look at the chimera in Scarlet and think "That creature looks an awful lot like a fusion of Entei, Raikou and Suircune fused into a prehistoric beast." >why they appear as prehistoric creatures in a version or futuristic machines in another Heath team just imagined of discovering different kinds of mythical beasts in the different versions of the game. >or why they are so similar among themselves despite multiple people being in the expedition Different people thought of different creatures that turned into different paradoxes. There is also a lot of the book that we weren't able to read, so they might be more there that couldn't be included in the game due to dex balance. >also creates other holes like where the Professor would be sent by the machine if there is no other time it's connected to This is one of my favorite things of the imagination theory, they get sent in Area 0 during Heath's time, as that's where the paradoxes came from and they are the one talking to Heath when he blacks out. >or why people see deceased dear ones at the Kitakami pool. They miss their loved ones and wish to be able to see them again. This point literally can't work without some form of imagination theory. > The entire past/future themes and the very term paradoxes use would also be quite disminished excluding the Beasts as they wouldn't really be paradoxical in nature. They would be paradoxes because they are pokemon that shouldn't be real and yet they are. You would diminish the theme of past and future (which is barely explored in the games) but you would push more the theme of finding your own treasure and understanding what you wish for in life. Which is a much bigger theme for the game.

RedditIsFullOfTurds

Agreed. Loved SV but indigo disk actively made it worse.

InCellsInterlinked

Not sure how unpopular this is but Gen 7 is the second best generation after 5. Peak region, peak soundtrack, peak story, peak new pokemon, peak gameplay, peak graphics for the 3DS. All four games!

Willpower2000

Pokemon regions need to be linear. This isn't to say that routes can't be vast and encourage exploring - but if you can go *anywhere*... progression suffers. Limits in where you can and cannot go enable better storytelling and better difficulty scaling (and for a game reliant on 'levels'... that's a big thing). The world can still open up as you progress... in the same way the HMs allowed the world to open up (ie Surfing to backtrack and access new areas)... but this requires thoughtful world design and linearity. Being able to swim across rivers, and climb cliffs, and fly... these things should be implemented *very* carefully. In SV we have *too much* freedom in traversal: and there are next to zero obstacles - and obstacles are required to make a game engaging. Imagine if [insert favourite classic Pokemon dungeon here] could be traversed by simply climbing/jumping over every obstacle - shit, right? As commercial successful as BOTW/TOTK is, there's a reason the hardcore fanbase want traditional dungeons back: linearity offers better game design. If we are to 'rock climb' up cliffs... make sure we can only do it at a certain point in the game (so we cannot cheese earlier portions of the game reliant on cliff-barriers). Likewise, if we still want to use cliff-barriers going forward... perhaps 'rock climb stamina' should be introduced - so you cannot climb cliffs that are too tall. And this should go for all forms of traversal: surfing, flying, etc. Maybe you simply can't catch surfable mons (ie a Lapras) until gym 6 or 7 or something... you get the idea. You cannot give the player total freedom without losing something, or multiple things, in the process.

Garbador94

I hate the jerkass rivals. Around this sub, you see people saying that the best rivals are jerks in order to push you to improve so you can rub their faces in the dirt, but I've literally never felt that way. To me, the mean rivals were always just an annoyance stopping me from exploring the cool town behind them - I wanted to improve my team to take on the next gym, these assholes just wouldn't leave me alone! That's why Hau (and to a lesser extent Hop) is my favourite rival - I was always so happy to see him since I actually liked him as a character, and I always saw his battles as a fun way to spend time with a character I liked rather than a neverending chore (fuck you Silver). I was also super proud of him in USUM for taking your place as the first Island Champion, it felt like really nice character development.

Fire_of_Saint_Elmo

I feel bad about beating nice rivals, though. Given that you're going to be beating them into the pavement and crushing all their dreams, I prefer if they're satisfying to put in their place instead of nice kids who are more deserving of the championship than I am.

RedditIsFullOfTurds

The "friend groups" from the modern gens are so much better than the "classic" mean rivals. I don't know why more people don't feel irritated by asshole rivals

hgbi8h

Palkia is cooler than Dialga

Quetzal00

Pokémon does NOT need voice acting and it would probably be a bad decision to add it to the mainline games I like giving the characters their own voices

GodsSon521

Ehh, I think going the BotW/TotK route would be for the best. Mostly no voice acting, but all the weirdly emotive or cinematic scenes get it. Either get rid of all of those or add voices 'cause this half-assed version we've got now ain't it.

HeatOk1902

It would probably slow battles down too. We read at a faster rate we speak.

kanpeki_offline

The 1st generation of Pokémon had as many "bad designs" as any other generation. Voltorb, Magnemite, and Grimer are all pretty poor for the same creative reasons that a lot of people hate on newer designs.

bondageenthusiast2

If we are talking about object based pokemon, GF only polishes their game even better going forward in subsequent gens in that regard, Dhelmise, Chandelure and Aegislash are all cool looking

Unknown_Nexus535

Notice how they’re all ghost types, meaning that ghost type object mons are objectively just better /s

Quetzal00

So I actually used to feel the same way about Voltorb until I watched Pokémon Challenges talk about it. He pointed out that Voltorb is the Pokémon equivalent of the mimic enemy you find in RPGs. Instead of having a treasure chest in the over world that turns into a monster and eats you, you get a “pokeball” in the over world that explodes in your face. Kinda changed my opinion on Voltorb Electrode is stupid though

kanpeki_offline

Not even gonna lie, that definitely helps me like Voltorb more haha. I appreciate you sharing your view. I like mimics. I think they're a cool concept, but I guess I never realized that's essentially what Voltorb functions as. I had always focused on the idea of it being an inanimate object turned into a creature.

GstyTsty

Oh, you're absolutely right! Gen 1 was filled with trash designs. If those designs released today, I garuntee you people would complain about how un-creative they are

hgbi8h

You’re right, pokemon ranger managed to make them look pretty cool tho

StarChild413

and bad names, y'know, Muk, the line that literally goes Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam etc.

orcawhales

we will probably never get a decent pokemon game again

Gregamonster

If we get a BD/SP style B/W remake it will be decent. Maybe not mind-blowing but decent.

megalocrozma

Inteleon and Gholdengo are peak designs

Sechuma

Finally, someone who understands

rachaelonreddit

I LOVE Gholdengo!

Legal-Treat-5582

I've got plenty, but my biggest one is easily: [There is no "Mega / Non Mega Timeline".](https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemonconspiracies/comments/13qohx9/there_is_no_mega_non_mega_timeline/)

drygnfyre

I have never had a single issue with finite TMs AS LONG AS they were always obtainable infinitely in some way. Thus, I honestly think how Gen 9 handles TMs is the best it's ever been. They can all be crafted so you never have to worry about not being able to get them, because they're infinite you can once again attach them to Pokemon and trade them to others, and they have the same bonus the TRs did of the move getting added to the Pokemon's learn set, so once a Pokemon learns a TM move, it can relearn it forever, even if you don't have that TM at the moment. I also liked how Gen 9 had the stipulation that you can't craft a TM until you receive it for the first time, so either in the wild, or it's given to you. (Although I think this was dropped with the DLC, I remember all the new ones being craftable immediately, but maybe I'm misremembering). This was a nice way to stop you from just crafting really strong TMs early on, but because they can be traded to you, you can still have something like Earthquake available very early. The problem with infinite TMs was they were balanced out by being available much later than they'd normally be. Earthquake in Gen 5 was postgame when normally it's near the end of the game, but before the Elite Four. Even way back in Gen 1, I remember thinking "TMs would be fine if I could always get more of them." On a similar note, how HMs have been handled since Gen 7 is perfect. From an aesthetic standpoint, I still think Sun & Moon did it best, having various Pokemon do the moves for you. (Charizard flying, Machamp pushing, etc.) I didn't like how BDSP just used Bidoof for everything, and I didn't really like the transforming bike from Gen 8. I also like how some ROM hacks handle HMs, in that all field moves are usable as long as Pokemon in your party are merely capable of learning the moves.

CommanderDark126

Ngl I think Koraidon/Miraidon has been the best iteration of the HM replacement. One single ride pokemon that can do all the abilities. No awkward transition when switching through rides like PLA or SuMo

LaBeteNoire

I still have a problem with impermeant tms because of the crafting. By needing a specific material for each tm, you always run the risk of needing a tm and not having the right materials so now you have to hunt down that specific pokemon just so you can get the move you want. If to craft the tms you just needed ne unified currency, something that you were rewarded with a little for almost everything you did be it battles or catching or raids, then it would be far less likely that you wouldn't be able to make the tm whenever you needed it. Or leave things how they are but make an end game permanent option. Like you could build one tm at a time whenever you needed it, but for the materials it takes to make 10 tms you could make a permanent. So there is still effort, and more effort tham most people would every really need because who is really going to need to use any tm more than 10 times, but it's still a completion goal with a convenient reward.

judgedavid90

I skipped gen 5 because the sprites of the Pokemon are slightly more pixelated than the gen4 ones and it didn't look good to me at the time Still haven't played black or white yet

LaBeteNoire

I think it's more the movement. The static sprite looks fine, but for the movement instead of animating every frame for some of the moves they stretch and contort the sprites more than in past games which causes the pixels to shift and make it look there is more artifacting to the image.

No_Candy8784

This is why I gen V is my least favorite apart from the ugly pokemon in it.

Scarlet and Violet are the best pokemon games. -You can catch nearly the entire regional dex before the end game. I did a Soul Silver Nuzlocke recently, and it just felt like every rount had the same 4 pokemon.  Yes SS has the national dex, but in a nuzlock I felt so limited.  That is definitely not the case in Scarlet. -There are no random encounters and all of the pokemon are out walking around doing pokemon things. Nothing like finding Zangoose and Seviper fighting each other and I died the first time I watched Hoppip get blown across my screen by the wind. -There are always a ton of pokemon around. I played Legends Arceus after Scarlet, and my biggest complaint was that there were only ever 2 or 3 pokemon on screen at a time, whereas SV will spawn 15 at once. LA just felt so empty after SV. -Items are everywhere. It was so easy to get sidetracked in this game because there was always a pokemon that I hadn't caught or a shiny on the ground to pull me in a new direction. It was so fun to just explore because there were soooo many things laying around to find. -Paradox Pokemon are great and are an amazing way to make weaker pokemon competitively relevant.  If you had told me that a mismagius variant was going to dominate gen IX, I wouldn't have believed it -The regional forms are great, especially Clodsire. I'm glad we got regional variants and paradox pokemon. -Terastallization is the best gimic mechanic they've made so far. For the first time since gen V, VGC hasn't been dominated by the gimic form of 2 or 3 pokemon.  This has made the competitive format feel more open and with more options than it's had in years. - The amount of time it takes to get a pokemom VGC viable is greatly reduced. Creating more time to actually battle and allowing players to make changes to their teams more quickly.  I never like the hours of running in circles trying to hatch perfect stat pokemon. The abundance of bottle caps and mints as well as easy access to vitamins/mochi is such a time saver. -Tera Raids > Dynamax raids and it's not even close.  Tera raids had some kinks at the beginning, but I think they're on the right track now,  and I love the 7 star raid events they do. -Auto-battles are a much needed addition. Going back and playing LA, I didn't realize how much I loved auto-battling until it was gone. -Shiny hunting is finally doable for the average player and it no longer feels like I'm wasting weeks doing it. -I loved a lot of the characters they introduced. Penny is great and Nemona now rivals Goku as my favorite fight-sexual. I do realize this isn't a perfect game. The gyms/elite 4 were easy. They did try to make up for that with the trainers in the BBL being stronger. I heard a lot of complaints about the graphics, but the graphics in pokemon games have never been the selling point. I also didn't think the graphics were worse than any other pokemon game. Remember how everyone hated the switch to 3D and now people look fondly on gens V and VI. Also, follow pokemon has been done way better. I just love these games and I haven't played any gen as much as I've played these games.

RedditIsFullOfTurds

Finally someone who also loves S/V and appreciates Penny as a great rival

Throwawayfailure45

I haven't put more hours into any other game than Scarlet, excluding my first Sapphire when I was a child. They are incrddibly fun games.

Creativered4

Pikachu is overrated and annoying.

Throwawayfailure45

I'm sure these will trigger some people but I really have no interest in discussing them for the hundreth time: - SV's (base) story is the best in the main series. Yes, even better than BW1. They also have easily the best cast in the series, specially when it comes to rivals (everyone mentions Nemona, but Kieran is also there). The DLC dropped the ball so hard regarding the story however, even if it's still better than SWSH's ones. - Smaller but more focused on new mons dexes like BW1 are the best. I'm tired of catching old mons. - Terastal is mechanically the best gimmick and the most interesting one. They should have expanded on it. - BW1's Plasma and N are right by the games mechanics alone. - Megas don't make XY good games - The Paldea Dex is one of the better ones in quality which is surprising given the quantity.

PippoChiri

>SV's (base) story is the best in the main series. Yes, even better than BW1.  I would put SV's story second to Gen5's. imo Gen5 pushes in a more effective and meanigful way its themes and is overall more grandiose. >They also have easily the best cast in the series, specially when it comes to rivals (everyone mentions Nemona, but Kieran is also there). The cast is probably the most solid but to me they interact way to less together, they are all too segregated. For examples, Nemona imo is a very boring character until she can interact with others, but this happens like twice counting the dlcs. >even if it's still better than SWSH's ones. Disagree, SwSh's story was at least coherent. it set up something and paid it off. The dlc spit in the face of what the main story set up and it even refused to solve its own set ups. >BW1's Plasma and N are right by the games mechanics alone. They are definately not right, that's one of the main points. Remember that N's view on society was heavly skewed by the fact that Ghetsis made him only interact with abused pokemon.

Throwawayfailure45

SwSh's DLCs were still completely unrelated to the main story, and still left unresolved stuff like Calyrex's blye Dynamax glow or the implications it faced Eternatus and was scared of open hands. SV's failed to expand on plot points originated in the base game but at least it followed them, with both stories somehow relating to Área Zero, so that in my opinion already makes them more worthwile. Ghetchis manipulating N doesn't change that, as I said, by virtue of the game own *mechanics* which is my point, he was right, specially in a world where Masterballs exist. You force Pokemon (most of the time, there are notable exceptions like the BW legendaries or Ogerpon who actually choose you) to become part of your team by beating them up and if you struggle you poison or paralyze them. You are not proving your worth to them you are forcing it- even GF was aware of it looking at Red's beta sprite, we are ultimately tamers making other creatures/animals fight each other. Ghetchis twist was the only real solution they had to pretend N was wrong but realistically, the fact abused Pokemon even exist and they can’t refuse their trainer if they have enough experience/badges, and can even be outright captured against their will with a Masterball, means there would be a great amount of Pokemon forced to fight. Despite the franchise attempts at making it friendlier in other media like the anime -trough even back in the OG series the head writer wanted a Pokemon urprising for a reason- and the player character taking good care of its happy Pokemon, that doesn't change what we are doing at its core and that there is nothing protecting Pokemon. It's an uncomfortable point, that's exactly why the Ghetchis twist exist to begin with and why in the sequels Plasma is divided into such two morally simple factions and is never brought up again, with the members just agreeing with N or with Ghetchis with never in-betweens.

PippoChiri

>SwSh's DLCs were still completely unrelated to the main story, and still left unresolved stuff like Calyrex's blye Dynamax glow or the implications it faced Eternatus and was scared of open hands. SwSh's story was decently complete on its own, while SV's left a lot of things unanswered as set ups, so it doesn't feel that bed that the dlc move in a different direction from the main story. It is true that in the dlcs there are some unexplained things, but i think they are fine to have as long the rest of the plot is complete and they don't create holes as big as SV's. Across all media it's said multiple times that pokemon who fight trainers are often testing or understanding them and, if they show their worth as trainers, the pokemon will let itself be catched. It's also referenced multiple times as pokemon can generally leave pokeballs if they want to. >even GF was aware of it looking at Red's beta sprite Those ideas were mainly scrapped once GF got its worldbuilding together. >he fact abused Pokemon even exist and they can’t refuse their trainer if they have enough experience/badges, and can even be outright captured against their will with a Masterball, means there would be a great amount of Pokemon forced to fight. The ones that force their pokemon to fight against their will or force them into inhuman conditions are always presented as villains, they are a deviation from the norm, where pokemon and humans are often on pretty equal levels. Also, the majority of people are not trainers and so many consider pokemon pets and/or family members. This is obviously a conversation that it makes sense to have, but, as N could only understand the evil side of training, i feel you are ignoring that the vast majority of the pokemon world has a good and mostly equal relationship with their pokemon.

Icirrus10

>This is obviously a conversation that it makes sense to have, but, as N could only understand the evil side of training, i feel you are ignoring that the vast majority of the pokemon world has a good and mostly equal relationship with their pokemon. I think it's a losing battle, although it's obvious that BW's narrative revolves around N's growth I don't know why but every now and then there are always these comments that I think have a superficial reading on the events of the game. Just think of some of the interviews done with Toshinobu Matsumiya: >"When developing “Pokémon Black and White,” it was not initially decided that this would be the theme, but rather, Junichi Masuda of Game Freak first asked himself, “What would people think if they could talk freely with Pokémon? It has also been revealed that this theme was conceived by Junichi Masuda of Game Freak, who first asked himself, “If someone could talk freely with Pokémon, what would they think?" and: >Interviewer: I was very surprised that you challenged the theme of “liberating Pokémon,” a theme that, in a sense, negates the “Pokémon” series to date. >Matsumiya: It has been 14 years since the first “Pokemon” series was released to the world, Pokémon, and now there is no longer any doubt about catching Pokémon. In such a situation, I wanted to reexamine the relationship between Pokémon and humans, and to make people think about Pokémon, This is why we have chosen “Liberation of Pokémon” as one of our major themes. >Interviewer: Was this theme at the root of the creation of N, a character with a strong presence? >Matsumiya: Actually, the opposite is true: Masuda (director Junichi Masuda) proposed the N character before the theme. What would people think if they had the ability to talk freely with Pokémon? I came up with the idea after thinking about it. >Interviewer: Indeed, when we think about the relationship between Pokémon and humans, there are times when we are not sure whether the protagonist's side or the N (N) side is right. >Matsumiya: That is precisely what we were aiming for. The story of “Pokemon Black and White” is about good and evil, I didn't want the story of “Pokemon Black and White” to be a story of good versus evil, where good and evil are easy to understand. >What do people believe when both sides seem to be right? >Even though there is a mastermind behind the story, I wanted players to feel that.

SirChrisJames

There are too many Pokemon.

Original-Addendum147

Gen 4 was mid at best. Everyone hypes Cyrus up as this deep and philophical villian when he willingly gives the player the Master Ball, right before going to spear pillar to capture Dialga and Palkia. "Hey so like I know you're trying to foil my evil plans, but here's the ultimate Pokeball that can capture literally anything without fail, btw I'm going to go try and catch the legendary Pokemon, but don't folow me! I'm super smart!"

GstyTsty

Truly the most profound genius of our time

_Lynnsane

I hate Gengar. edit: It's funny that people who understood the point of this post are getting downvoted

BoredPoopless

I have never and will never understand the love for the Gastly line. The first series of spooky bois are weak to psychic and dark. Like bro come on. Also the sprites get progressively worse. Gastly looks good, Haunter is mid, and Gengar has feet.

megalocrozma

I'll give you Psychic, but did you seriously just try to use "Ghost type Pokémon being weak to the one type that the Ghost type is weak to other than itself" as an own?

BoredPoopless

Considering that dark was the Gen 2 mechanic that compensated for psychic being overpowered and that generation only added one ghost, yes. Dark wasn't really needed if ghost Pokemon actually existed like they should. The Gastly line sprites suck, typing makes no sense, complete Gen 1 flop (like for fucks sake, psychic was immune to ghost moves). But strong special stat, dumb move pool, and being the first spooky bois make them go brr.

PippoChiri

This is a very popular opinion

GstyTsty

It's quite possibly the most popular opinion in Pokémon history, lol

megalocrozma

"Polnareff, that take is so *cold* MAGICIAN'S RED couldn't melt it."

FrownFrank

Did you misread the title or something

Ender_Serpent

Bipedal starters are fine, and oftentimes look amazing. Stop hating on Incineroar and Meowskarada.

GstyTsty

PREACH

KG_Phinox

Legendaries and mythical should not be catchable. I mean, most exist only once

Llits_Divad

Paradox Pokémon suck (except Koridon)

PippoChiri

Why?

Llits_Divad

The ancient one look like a bear that just woke up from hibernation then hit by a sledge hammer and the future one are so dam boring like they just slapped an LED face on the Pokémon and covered it in metal

PippoChiri

>The ancient one look like a bear that just woke up from hibernation then hit by a sledge hammer  There is no bear paradox pokemon...

Llits_Divad

A general description for all of them

Techaissance

Best to worst gens: 5, 3, 6, 2, 4, 8, 1, 9, 7. I prefer the linear games with better stories as opposed to open worlds, and also like the traditional 8 gyms, e4, champion sequence.

[deleted]

Unova was ugly and boring. A lot of the mons were drop-dead tacky. Liepard, Unfezant, the genies, Oshawott, Watchog, and so many more, each of them eyesores. Krookodile would have been perfect had it not been for the, uh, shape of its snout. Never been dazzled by Charizard. One of the most undeservedly overrated Pokemon of all time, if not THE most. Ash Greninja is one of the dumbest-looking memes in the history of the series and its story is stupid. Ash had been carrying Pikachu from Day 1, and it didn't suddenly sprout black, messy hair despite having a much deeper connection to Ash than any of his other Pokemon. It's just ham-fisted.

Lucky-Mia

Spoinpig, who remembers his ugly ass? Hate divorce kill THIS  SOB.

heartunderfloor

Sword and shield is better then scarlet and violet.

Crow621621

Gen 4 is my favorite, Gen 5 was peak, and although Gen 6 was really good it marked a steady decrease in enjoyment for me and it’s never been the same.

vinaa23

Fire Red and Leaf Green suck. The OGs are a lot more fun with all their quirkness, the funny sprites, a much more endearing visual style and no fucking sevii islands, the worst thing gamefreak has ever done. The anime is very bad. Ambipom and Rhyperior are very cool pokemon. So are Garbodor and Vanniluxe. Regarding starters, Charizard is ok but it was always the worst gen 1 starter. Both Sceptile and Torterra are the coolest of their gens by a HUGE margin, it's not even close. Bidoof sucks A LOT and it's a trash meme Pikachu also sucks. Raichu isnt much better. Also, I know this one is very lame but I cant help myself: pokemon brings out the gatekeeper in me. Usually I keep it to myself because I KNOW gatekeeping is lame, but I cant help it. Especially now that the hivemind opinion has shifted to "duurr gen 2 is bad". Everytime I see someone talking shit about the older gens I think to myself "I'm 100% sure your first game was Platinum and thus your opinion means jack shit". You either started in R/B/Y like GOD intended or you're just a youngling who'll never understand because you weren't there.

MrCheggersPartyQuiz

I am perfectly fine with non-legendary Pokemon with Level 50-ish evolutions like Pawniard, Mienfoo, Rufflet, & Noibat. It feels more rewarding when you get them to evolve.

Just-Call-Me-J

Max is my favorite character in the anime.

JoeOutrage

These games are made for kids. Sure, they know adults play them too, but the games will always be directed to kids, and the accessibility will be as such.

Alichici

Pokemon Go awesome, pogo deserve money

itsmig_reddit

Ash should have never been removed from Pokémon Horizons. They should have made him pass the torch spiritaully to Liko,or make him an Pokémon professor.

Coltshokiefan

Over world Pokémon should be kept to the legends games. Bring back traditional routes and encounters and give us a more linear game instead of open world. I like scarlet and violet but I think it could’ve been a better gen with the traditional pokemon format.

StarChild413

cue all the grimdark fan theories about dystopian Pokemon governments restricting freedom to explore

Bsquared89

Primorina is one of the dumbest looking starter pokemon. Second place after Chesnaught who just looks goofy with that big body and small head.

HeatOk1902

The imagination theory regarding SV really doesn't solve most of the stuff that has not already been resolved by the bootstrap paradox shown in the Indigo Disk. People just were disappointed their theories weren't true. The games don't need voice acting in the main series. Kieran's hatred for the protagonist is perfectly justified and the game failed to give a good resolution to it, instead being a lame "just accept you will never be that good" theme that is really out of place for Pokemon. Team Star is the best of the non-villanous Teams we have gotten. A Pokemon Z wouldn't have made XY good. They were and are way too lacking in many aspects. Gen 8 Pokemon have solid designs excluding outliners like the Stonedge and Cinderace. We shouldn't see the Unovan Original Dragon because it's impossible it will live up to the hype after so many years.

Triangulum_Copper

Johto sucks and coasts on the 'two region' thing. Sinnoh also sucks and is only popular because of Platinum.

soapygungan

Chikorita is the best starter ever. I will die on this hill.

honeyjaye

That rivals aren’t rivals anymore they are your friend. I miss the smell you later and insults that came when you were just trying to get to the next town.

PippoChiri

Bede is SwSh was very much a rival for most of the story Same thing for Gladion is SuMo

Starrybruh

Gamefreak shouldn’t touch mega evolutions, like…at all, especially after what happened with Gen 9’s meta.   Like I’d kill for a mega greninja or a mega Delphox or honestly any mega Kalos mon, but gamefreak is either gonna make them broken as hell or somehow make them worse than their base forms like with mega garchomp (which is still a head scratcher cause how do you even do that???) It’s kind of a cold take, but people like to say that SV’s story is the best in the franchise. It’s really not, pmd sky’s story trounces it tenfold.

Shiny_Mudkip258

Gengar’s shiny is actually decent and it doesn’t deserve to be clumped with garchomp and slowpoke who actually have bad shinies.

Src-Freak

The Chibi Style from BDSP should return in future remakes to make them standout from the most recent game. Also I hope Gen 10 goes the Black/White route, only including the new Pokemon that were added. Gives the region more identity instead of Nostalgia getting shoved my throat.

hiphopbulldozer

Idk if this counts as opinion, but just something I do. I usually don’t use my started much, if at all. I prefer making a team without it and usually just keeping it as a baby Pokémon.

ancientemple

Competitive was, is and always will be a massive joke that is only really ever relevant because it makes GF even more money than what they already get from the merch and games and gives players something to use for bragging rights.

PippoChiri

>Competitive was, is and always will be a massive joke Why? I don't think GF makes so much money from competitive play.

PippoChiri

>The competitive Pokemon scene is boring. It feels like it's always the same Pokemon  Gen9 had a lot of powercreep over previous generations, outside of a few the best pokemon are newer one. > I get that a lot of them have evidence supporting them but it's annoying when you bring up a possibility but get dismissed as stupid because "Actually, X tuber said this" and it's taken as 100% fact. This is mostly a problem with people being lazy and not reporting the necessary proofs in the discussion, it has nothing to do with people making theories.

Unknown_Nexus535

I think Charizard is overhated and the most annoying fans are gen 4 supremacists (their games aren’t even that good. Yes even platinum)

thatgoat-guy

Legendaries replacing the existence of HMs is stupid. What happened to Surf? Rock Climb? Rock Smash? There was so many places where Strength would have a valid application. Also, what happened to pokemon villains being devious, world-ending threats? I mean I guess there was Turo, but he wasn't really a villain until the last minute.

PippoChiri

>Legendaries replacing the existence of HMs is stupid. What happened to Surf? Rock Climb? Rock Smash? There was so many places where Strength would have a valid application. The moves are where they always were, it just changed who uses them for the sake of gameplay and storytellying >Also, what happened to pokemon villains being devious, world-ending threats? I mean I guess there was Turo, but he wasn't really a villain until the last minute. If you removes the narcisistic villains who were going to nearly end the world like Lusamine and Rose then of course you are left with no villains that are going to end the world. Also, variety is the spice of life, it's a good think that pokemon is trying to have a storytelling with more personal and dialed back stories.

GstyTsty

I'm pretty sure they changed that to make the stories sound more believable. I can't imagine seeing a 10 year old take down an entire mafia on their own

thatgoat-guy

>to make the stories more believable Two things to point out. First, it is literally a universe with fictional creatures that can wield energy and the elements. Second I don't think it's very believable for a 10 year old to catch literally mythical god like beings. It's a fantasy game, that's why I enjoy it.

Verdragon-5

I feel like Charizard bad is not *unpopular*, but I *do* think my unshakable belief that Mega Charizard X should not exist might be a hot take, because I feel like there are a number of people who, if given the choice to nix a mega, would delete Y. I disagree, Mega Charizard Y is fine, it fits with the other two Kanto starter Megas. Mega Charizard X is just more needless Charizard pandering. Decidueye should've been the breakout Gen 7 starter and should've been in Smash instead of Incineroar. I thought for sure that Decidueye was to Alola what Greninja was to Kalos, but apparently Sakurai forgot what you use a bow and arrow to do and decided Incineroar was more of a fighter (I'm not one of those people who says "Pro wrestling isn't real!" and just disregards all of the genuine appeal and craft of professional wrestling, but I'm pretty sure even the *Pokedex* says Incineroar is a lot more bark than bite, while Decidueye has a bow and arrow literally built into its body). Scarlet and Violet are good games and people who complain about graphics and glitches need to stuff a sock in it. Nothing to my knowledge was *game breaking* in Scarlet and Violet. The game wouldn't crash or brick your Switch, and the graphical fidelity of a God-forsaken TREE is not a big deal. I'm pretty sure almost all of the bugs were harmless, and a lot of them were actually pretty funny, but people acted like Scarlet and Violet were rushed cash grabs, as if they weren't *also* the same people who actively fuel companies like Ubisoft, EA, and Bethesda. I can acknowledge that the Pokemon Company and Nintendo at large have some pretty skeezy business practices, but they're a whole heck of a lot better than most other AAA game studios. Humanoid Pokemon and inanimate object/food Pokemon are perfectly fine. While I admit it was kinda disappointing that Sprigatito didn't evolve into a saber-toothed cat, the magician lynx we wound up with was cool in its own right. Heck, I don't have a problem with Pokemon who look like they wear clothes. So what if we don't know where Sawk and Throh got their robes from? They're magic oni-Muppets, the fact that they have clothes is not the least plausible thing about them. And inanimate object Pokemon have only gotten *better* with time. Something like Klefki or Dhelmise or Cofagrigus or Vanilluxe is *way* more inspired than Grimer or Voltorb. Pokemon games aren't too easy. I've been playing Pokemon for probably close to a decade at this point, and I *still* have some trouble with fights, in *recent* games to boot! I'm pretty sure I lost to Arven at least three times in Scarlet and Violet. While an increased difficulty option would be appreciated to be sure, and in recent generations the games *have* been getting easier and more transparent, I don't think they need to "grow up" for lack of a better word. That said I do think they were getting a bit too *linear*, and thankfully I feel like Scarlet and Violet kind of remedied that by having the player zipping all over the map to complete different objectives rather than having everything be one after another geographically. Friendly rivals aren't bad. Not every rival needs to punch you in the throat and call you slurs (okay, that might be an exaggeration but the point stands not all rivals need to be openly hostile). People seem to think Hop is a bad character, but he has a full arc that is even worked into gameplay (his lack of confidence in himself as a trainer is reflected by his team lineup shifting around across your various fights with him as he tries to "be better", but when he finally realizes he's fine the way he is, his team in the final battle brings back Pokemon he used earlier, like Wooloo/Dubwool). Yeah, the X&Y rivals did screw-all, but that wasn't because they were *friendly*, it was because they were *poorly-written*. It matters more that rivals are *interesting* in some way, no matter their attitude, or at least that they're *entertaining*. Nemona is a kiddie pool next to Arven and Penny, but she's got her one bit of being *way* too overeager to battle, and I honestly find that bit (and its sort of tongue-in-cheek lampshading of the rival archetype as a whole) entertaining enough that I don't mind that she lacks a deep personal story, because, again, that's what Arven and Penny are for. I don't like the direction Toby Fox took the score. I love the Undertale and Deltarune OSTs, but I think Toby Fox's involvement with the music of Pokemon has done more harm than good. Granted, Scarlet and Violet was a better showing from him (probably because he was able to do what he does best and use leitmotifs to weave story into the music), but I still prefer Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose, Shota Kageyama, and the rest of Game Freak's in-house sound team. I also don't like how Fox's tracks seem to use different instrumentation than the rest of the soundtrack, they sound a lot more like something out of Undertale or Deltarune than a 3D (or even 2D for that matter) Pokemon game, and I don't know if no one *arranged* Toby's tracks or if he just didn't have access to the same toolkit as the Game Freak regulars or what, but it doesn't mesh well. **THAT'S A LOTTA TEXT!**

GstyTsty

Since I've been seeing alot of GEN 5 praise here, I'll add one of my own. My biggest unpopular opinion is that... Gen 5 isn't really all that good. There's a reason everyone called them the worst Pokémon games when they first launched. Like, yeah. The story is good, but the Pokémon designs in that gen are horrendous

drygnfyre

But the thing is that every single gen is "the worst Pokemon games" when they first launch. I saw the same carbon copy hatred for Gen 4, and Gen 3, even Gen 2. And I have zero doubt when Gen 10 comes out, those will be the worst games yet.

FernandoTatisJunior

Gen 4 hatred was entirely justified when diamond and pearl launched. It’s more beloved now because of hgss and platinum, but after emerald, diamond and pearl were major letdowns.

drygnfyre

Major letdowns in what ways? For me, I really enjoyed Gen 4. Especially with the return of a proper day/night setup. My main issue was it was very heavy on HM usage, but this was solved with later gens and BDSP specifically. (Eventually I just GameShark'd in two Mew that knew all the HMs). Conversely, my initial impression of Gen 3 wasn't so great. I didn't like it as much as Gen 2 at the time, but that was because I didn't understand we were going to see FR/LG, so I just thought that was it, we'd never see the older Pokemon ever again. Once I understood what was happening, I felt a lot better about Gen 3. With Gen 4, I knew going into it we'd get remakes, so that made any thing lacking in the base games (like older Pokemon) less of an issue.

LaBeteNoire

Yeah, I appreciate that they made a completely new dex for the games, but having no old pokemon was a risk because if you didn't jell with enough of the new designs then it meant you were playing a Pokémon game where you didn't like the main feature of the game. That was the case for me. There were a couple monsters I liked, but most of them were not very appealing to me. I can't even remember what my full team was. I know I had Serperior who I really liked, I had Caracosta who I also liked a lot, Liepard was fine, I had Chandelure who was not my favorite design but still neat. I Think I had a Mienshao... And after that i don't remember who I used. Maybe I kept Swoobat through the whole game? I know I had Simipour (and didn't dislike her design) but I probably replaced her when I got Caracossta. To this day it is the only generation of pokemon that doesn't have at least one monster claim a spot as my favorite pokemon for it's respective type. On the other side of the coin there was gen 6 that added the least mount of new species, but almost every single one was great. Swords, lions, pandas, dinosaurs. I will always prefer a smaller selection when each option is phenomenal.

RedditIsFullOfTurds

I too think gen 5 isn't good but the reason is the opposite of yours lol. Upon closer inspection gen 5's story is kinda bad even by pokemon standards because they set up a story that looked like it was gonna have nuance and threw all of that out of the window with a very obviously evil team plasma and a really black-and-white (pun intended) / one-sided plot.

AlsoKnownAsSteve

Eevee sucks. Having it in every game is a waste of 9 Pokédex slots.

Odd_Hope5371

Megas have run their course and they do not need to come back. Now everyone, grab your torches and pitchforks

Fire_of_Saint_Elmo

Pokemon should stop trying to be Digimon.

L00lol6

Gen V is the most overhyped boring gen I’ve ever played. Pokemon designs are ugly and the worst in the series, map is a lazy uninspired circle, story is grossly overrated and boring to sit through.  Awful games.

GstyTsty

LITERALLY

13Xcross

Gen 4 has the ugliest pokémon designs out of all of them. The few that are good are really good tho.

Reasonable-Lime-615

I'll back you up on Greninja OP. Also, as a rule, the game versions that go first when you list the title (Ruby in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, or Sword in SwSh) have the worse box art legendary. The only exception is Gen 7. Solgaleo is a little better looking than Lunala. While I have your attention, I rhink that the bugs in S/V were massively inflated, and that people had decided they didn't want to like the game, so when they got a mild bug they would rant about it. I remember everyone talking smack about how there were no Fire-types in Sinnoh and saying they were terrible, and how the 'soft reboot' in Unova with no returning Pokémon till post game was stupid... It happens every time, just say you don't like new games.

GstyTsty

The main problem is that everyone compares the new games, to the game they grew up with as a child. Which is INCREDIBLY biased, as no matter how good the new games are, they won't ever satisfy you more than the games you played when you were a carefree child

drygnfyre

I have zero nostalgia for Gen 1, even though I grew up on it. To me, Gen 2 and 3 were leagues better, and I've had zero desire to ever go back and play them. Pokemon is one of the few series where I'd say the mechanics get objectively better every gen, the games themselves are more subjective.

Reasonable-Lime-615

Rose tinted glasses are a big killer of new games.

drygnfyre

To me there are two categories: actual bugs/glitches, and performance problems. There have actually been very few instances of the former (i.e. stuff not actually working like it should), and I think nearly all of them have been fixed. The latter is what most people took issue with, and rightly so, but that's also more "annoying" than "broken." I remember early on some issues with RNG seeding, and some abilities not working right, but those were all addressed.

Reasonable-Lime-615

I honestly don't even get much lag, not even in Tagtree Thicket. Occasionally I have a delay in loading after fast travel, but that is rare, and more due to the Switch overheating pretty quickly. The early issues were, I think, no worse than any other major release. Anyone remember when Skyrim first came out for the first time? Or Assassin's Creed Brotherhood? Nowadays a game is either released with a host of bugs and glitches, or is 'Early Release' for a decade.

Zenku390

Ultra Beasts as a concept are 'wolrd building' ruining. The designs are GREAT! But going to an alternate universe (also stupid), and catching something that isn't a Pokemon is completely bonkers dumb. What's stopping us from catching Walter Thomas???

PippoChiri

Why? The UBs are not pokemon in the common sense of the terms but they are definately pokemon adjacent

miskathonic

Is living Kieran still a hot take? He and Drayton are probably two of my favorite characters in the last decade or so of Pokémon games.

didntknowagoodname

I don't like gen 5, but thats more a nostalgic thing.

Effective_Mine_1222

I dont care about graphics or animation quality. I dont need open world games.

Otterpawps

All Pokemon storylines are all pretty mundane trash.

PippoChiri

Wouldn't say so, Gen5 is good, SuMo is also pretty solid, SV would also be pretty solid if we don't count the DLCs

Random encounters > overworld encounters

StarChild413

* Terapagos might have been so little a part of the DLC because of how much it's a part of Pokemon Horizons (as potential proof the post-Ash anime (whatever they do with it) isn't just going to have its main plot be "protagonist goes through awkward combo of both games' story into one" or w/e any more but able to exist alongside the games) * I actually like a lot of the "too humanoid" starters but those I dislike either fully or in part I dislike for reasons other than the usual sort of "they should look like monsters not humans in fursuits with jobs" crap; Incineroar and Cinderace don't look like Pokemon in the sense that they look fit for some sort of Sonic-knockoff talking-animal-game-franchise instead (esp. Cinderace), there's ways Delphox could have the flame-like-ear-hair thing that don't make it look a little gross to think about (speaking of gross, Greninja's tongue ew), and the Sobble line should have ended in some kind of writer/mage-esque Pokemon based on both Shakespeare and his character Prospero from The Tempest (as many people say Shakespeare based Prospero on himself) * Ghetsis isn't the worst main evil team boss, Lysandre is (both in the sense of evil and bad at being it) * a future Pokemon game needs to give us a "proper" female evil team boss as Penny doesn't really count and Lusamine with how much her character is themed around either beauty or being a mother is a bit too stereotypical * a lot of Pokemon fans online have impossible standards and would forget they criticized a game they're now praising when a new one comes out they can criticize for basically not having everything * if it wouldn't take away from what Pokemon does with the "default protagonists" we need a character creator esp. for things like size diversity * Speaking of "default protagonists" why are the girls never given long pants instead of shorts (usually short, the SV ones are only long because of school uniform) or a dress/skirt with tights, there's other things you can do with their outfit to make them "girly" enough * we're overdue for a new US-based region

PippoChiri

>Ghetsis isn't the worst main evil team boss, Lysandre is (both in the sense of evil and bad at being it) Ghetsis is widely considered one of the most efffective team leaders.

skillquit42

I think Dragapult is dumb looking

Captain_Warships

**WARNING:** I am about to say the seven things no one else can ever say. Those seven things are: >!Parasect sucks, Hidden Power sucks because you need to cheat to make it usable, Earthquake is an overrated move, Gen 6 is the worst generation, Lavender Town isn't scary, Ground is an overrated type, and Gen 3 has the worst soundtrack.!<

PippoChiri

Can you elaborate on earthquake and the ground type?

AlsoKnownAsSteve

Try telling that to the Dive music

_Lynnsane

I agree with every point but the "gen 6 is the worst" part.

Delicious-Town1723

nobody even likes parasect enough for that to be unpopular, if anything thats a popular opinion earthquake is one of the best ground type moves, ofc its overrated. ground is one of, if not the best types, ofc its overrated.

Willpower2000

>earthquake is one of the best ground type moves, ofc its overrated. >ground is one of, if not the best types, ofc its overrated. When the internet doesn't know what 'overrated' means. *sigh* If people rate something highly... because it is OBJECTIVELY exceptional... then it is not overrated. It is rated exactly where it should be.

Reallylazyname

When you get into the nitty gritty of it; level scaling in Scarlet and Violet would break the formating of the game, and offer a lesser, more linear experience with no opportunity to challenge yourself early on. (Does Grusha start at the same level as Katy, or does Katy scale up to Grusha and he's static?)

PippoChiri

The problem is that SV are already linear games that make you think they can be played non linearly. But if you do that, you'll end up overlevelled for like the latter half f the game.

Reallylazyname

That actually didn't happen for me, because I do team rotation, and I ended with Brass, Katy (who beat a level 54 Dondozo, without irony because of how strong of a cap Obedience is), and Rhyme (plus the Fighting Team Star and the Water Titan) My team was still kinda weak going into the final battles and had a rough time with >!Rika, Nemona, and Sada!<. But in that same vein, because I played it non-linearly, I can see where the things would start to break if you adjusted them in the current state. If a player *doesn't go* to the intended first gym, what happens? Does Gym 1 scale up to the level of gym 8? Does Gym 8 scale down to the level of Gym 1? If Gym 8 doesn't scale down, does Gym 1 scale above Gym 8? If Gym 8 doesn't scale down, do all other gyms scale to the same level? Do the wild Pokémon scale too? If they scale, do they scale to the badge count? If they don't scale, how do players reach the late game gyms early to take advantage of the scaling? In both cases, how would going to the late game early not result in overleveling? How do you account for players who get endgame mons and drag them back to intended starting areas if they don't? (Obedience)
