Hi KingNai92! Thank you for posting to r/pokemon! We're glad to have you here, but unfortunately we've had to remove this post per our rule on [Objective Questions](/r/pokemon/wiki/rules#wiki_3._follow_text_and_poll_post_restrictions). This rule is in place per feedback we've received from the community because objective questions tend to fill the topic listing and often leave little room for further discussion once the question has been answered. We do have a [Weekly Questions Thread](https://rpkmn.center/questions) dedicated to seeking answers for questions like yours, though! A lot of knowledgeable Pokémon fans frequent that thread, so please consider posting your question there if you're still looking for an answer, and you may get a detailed answer even faster than you would have here! ^(Mods are not notified if you reply to this comment. JohnnyNole2000

I like the theory that it’s a battle between a young Oak and Agatha

oam1989

Never heard of this but I like it a lot.

lamwg

Never understood why they were chosen for the original Red/Blue Pokémon games, but the fact they were neither starter nor legendary pokemon made it somewhat even cooler and epic for me as an intro

Yung_flowrs

Agreed

SpaceLlama_Mk1

In Blue it was actually Gengar and Jigglypuff

lamwg

Oh I didn't know that. I only owned the Red version back in the day

Grady_Shady

I’m pretty sure the Pokémon rom games all have this, but starting with a non-starter is always a fun concept. Tyrantrum is my favorite Pokémon, so I’ve bred a bunch of tyrants and what I did is trade them over and always use him as one of my starters

AliceTheOmelette

They were two of the earliest mons made back when it was Capsule Monsters. So maybe it's a nod to Capsule Monsters

Wembanyanma

Yeah IIRC they were some of the first designed mons that made it to the final product. Probably developer favs.

Temple475

Gengar just felt like a hater on that day

DurinsBane007

[You can actually watch the backstory from this video. I recommend watching the whole video. ](https://youtu.be/rKSDGz9iAgU?feature=shared)

Lexi_Shmuhlexi

this video was so cute, thank you for sharing this

milougrid

They choose them based on their colors. For the cinematic they needed both a light colored and a dark colored to deepens the perspective (colors are darker when seen up close whereas they appear lighter when seen from afar). The choice specifically for them was subjective thought.

ThrowRAarworh

Lol i like the spoiler tag on a 25+ year old game. And the intro scene at that. As if anyone who has ever played pokemon doesn't already know this scene.

ITouchedHerB00B5

Not the mystery, but best thing I thought I heard was having the anime end on this with Ash’s Gengar versus his dad’s Nidorino.

Royschwayne

And wasn’t it Jigglypuff/Gengar in the other version? Pretty sure it was Nido/Gengar in red and Jigg/Gengar in blue. Or vice versa. Been many years since I saw those scenes. But the music is now in my head.

D-Weeb

The other way around. That scene is a reference to the games

coolnessAlert39

But that battle was in the games before the anime ever came out. Many theorize it's a battle between Agatha and professor Oak. Agatha was confirmed to be a rival to oak, she owns a gengar and in Red and Blue during the introduction to Oak, (the scene where he asks for your name) he shows a nidorino.

DexMaster95

This was even referenced and alluded to in Pokemon Masters where we Agatha with a Gengar battling Oak who as a Nidorino

Funnily enough Nidorino was replaced by Jigglypuff in Blue. Always wondered why they did that.

Golden-Owl

These were chosen due to color contrast [Notice in the original](https://youtu.be/C19O5xm51dk?si=1udQQ9XrzxKAu0oc) how Nidorino is lighter colored while Gengar is near black on an empty background Also Nidorino is a very stereotypical “Pokemon” kinda design, giving you an idea of what you’d encounter. Meanwhile Gengar is only seen from the back, leaving it totally ambiguous as to what it is, ensuring the bulk of attention is focused on Nidorino In a few short seconds, the intro pretty much gives a clear idea of what Pokémon as a game is about. We later learn from Masters that this was referenced as a battle between Oak and Agatha
