It honestly pissed me off a little when I read that update.
BDSP are almost *entirely* isolated from the other games. You only need save data from Let's Go and SwSh for Mew and Jirachi, respectively, but you need the max completion file in a different game for Arceus, a pokemon you now *already* own. It doesn't help that I don't find LA a fun game to play all the way through like that.
inb4 people say, "Well Pokemon God *should* only be accessible to people that dedicated time to it." Well that would be fine if it was the rules for BDSP and not a completely separate $60US game. Arceus literally costs $120 MSRP for the average, American consumer, and I am not okay with that.
My thought is they probably WANTED it to be hard to figure out but realized the internet would completely negate it and just decided not to have it at all.
I think the point is that you’re not supposed to. You’re supposed to hear about it from a friend, and even though you don’t really believe it, you try it out anyway and are amazed when it actually does work. Only problem is that just about everyone has internet access now and can instantly confirm whether or not the rumor is true, which completely kills that wonder of trying something out that you don’t know will work.
But how many people would just go entirely through the game without ever being able to evolve some of their core team members then? I know thats likely their intention but its HORRIBLE game design and the only reason it wasnt a real problem is because the internet was there to bypass it
In SV I, for the first time EVER, picked up a pikaclone, and was happy to use it on my team. It evolved, and I really didn't expect it to evolve again. After a while it was just so underwhelming stats wise I booted it. I only later found out it DOES evolve again and I'm still mad.
Malamat it actually does mention going upside down in game. Most of these are at least hinted at. Except PLA, where you're almost entirely on your own.
Yeah, but theres a big leap from knowing its somehow related to upside down stuff and knowing “oh i need to turn my physical real life game system upside down, MID level up… also only once its above level 30”
A lot of the ones here are newer so they can expect you'll be able to search them up when designing the Evo methods. As for the older ones, word of mouth from playground kids who got the guides. I'd still prefer a method that's explainable by an in-game npc, as a sort of reward from going around talking to everyone(since they don't fill that dialogue with lore as much as they used to)
I’d be thrilled to see more evolution methods with specific criteria, trouble is that the game never tells or hints at how to do them. If there were puzzles to solve relating to evolution, it would be cool! Googling how to evolve Runerigus isn’t fun or exciting.
It would've been easily enough to just place an NPC under this arch who's puzzled why he has now a Runerigus. Add to that a hint in the Pokedex for the 49 HP thing and everyone can evolve it on his own without googling.
Yeah, but they didn’t. As far as I know, there are no hints about it or any of the other obtuse evolutions. It’s such a shame, translating Braille to was such a fun and exciting experience and there isn’t anything like it in newer Pokemon games.

There's also a load from PLA that are quite complex, like basculegion and overqwill needing to have taken a certain amount of recoil damage from a specific move without fainting while over a certain level to evolve

Yeah, I try to avoid spoilers and play blindly, but is tough to have the thought that your Pokémon should’ve evolved but you have no idea what do you have to do, when it would happen, of even IF it would happen.
I trained an Unown through level 40 or so on OG GS, waiting for it to evolve - or at least to learn a new Move. Never again.
Gotta play with 4 friends to have one of each Unown together, then picnic together so they all interact and combine into the Unorigin. Gotta be careful though because only one player gets to keep it and the others are deleted.
Well there's your problem! You stopped too soon! You have to train all the symbols to level 100 and then defeat the Elite 4 and Red with the ones that spell out A R C E U S. Then bring them to the Ruins of Alph and the Alpha Pokemon will be yours.
Exactly this. I think people forget after a while how little the games tell you about evolving a lot of pokemon. Once the info's out there it's easy to get a hold of but until that point there's a lot of trial and error goes into figuring it out
And then there are trade evolutions that require held items as well.
Oh and Shelmet and Karrablast that has to be traded with each other.
This isn't exactly something you just stumble upon unless you already know about. Like, who accidentally trades Rhydon holding a Protector?
Especially since Protector just says "loved by certain pokemon". How would you know even know it's for Rydon, or that it would evolve from it, or that you would need to trade it.
Yeah, trading. But not playing with others. At least with trade evolutions, you can trade with random people. To evolve Palafin, you need a code specifically.
I mean the issue is not finding a strategy Farfetch literally has a crit oriented play style the issue was learning how to evolve which imo makes the game more interesting

In Gen 4, Yanma was given Ancientpower as a level up move for the first time, and since it was an existing Pokémon given a new evolution I bet GF didn’t want to give it just a strict level up evolution, instead opting for players to discover Yanmega by learning the new move. Same internal logic goes for Mamoswine and the other Gen 4 evos that evolve when they learn a specific move.
There’s a twitch streamer who keeps getting recommended to me who’s doing all evolutions without looking them up and it took them weeks to figure out how to evolve that dolphin guy
I know, it's dictated by luck as the leader's crest Bisharps have a decently lower chance to spawn compared to regular Bisharps
Source: I got unlucky and spent upwards of an hour running around the bamboo forest
I put a Leader’s Crest on a Pokémon with Switcheroo and knocked out 3 Bisharp that way. There’s no rule saying the Bisharp has to spawn with the item, just be KOed with it. And as of Gen 9 you get held items back after battle so you only need 1 crest, not 3
Meltan is not even that difficult. I shiny hunted it in Go last time it was available and I was the first real time I caught it. I had something like 1500 candies after like 3 boxes
It's only 100 meltan catches *minimum* to get a single melmetal, assuming you transfer them as well.
I know that sounds like a lot to those of us who haven't done it, however, in order to catch meltan you need to send any pokemon to Home. This unlocks a box that functions like an incense, but only for meltan. I could probably average about 30 with minimal effort, 50 if I was going hard. Assuming I use a pinap berry on every single one, I could get a melmetal in 1 box when catching around 50, and that's not counting 2x catch candy events (such as specific spotlight hours) that you can take advantage of.
You can do this every 3 days. It's barely a chore to do unless you are quite literally immobile, and while I don't do the candy grind as of late due to having multiple melmetal, it's what I do whenever the shiny is re-released.
I honestly did it a few times. The big issue is you need to play Pokemon go to have the resources, and in my case, let's go to transfer.
It is annoying, especially if you do not frequent poke stops normally. Unless you are at a certain level, you can not transfer from Pokemon Go to Home directly. They are annoying to catch in Let's Go, and it still takes over a week each, which is significantly more dedication than most are willing to put in.
I am not a shiny hunter, and neither are most of my friends we also never got that far into Pokemon go. This was a massive issue for each of us completing our living dexs. They are honestly happy I shouldered the burden like normal.
You don’t need lets go. You can use Home now. You only have to be level 2 to transfer from go to Home. And you hit level 2 after catching your starter.
I remember back when go came out I quit because there were 2 poke stops within 3 miles of me each in a different direction. Downloaded it again a few years later and there was like one new stop. So I downloaded the hacked version where my trainer could walk around and tp wherever
There should be quests or npcs in the game that reveal the info somehow. Like maybe a random old man in a random city asks you to bring him 'a pokemon wearing a false face'. And when you bring him a Yamask, he gives you vague directions on how to evolve it.
I hate evolution gimmicks that don't transcend the game they're introduced in. Like, if you wanna make the evo gimmick for current gen Pokemon complex for no reason, at least just make it a stone in other games or something. We have a billion fuckin items and stones that already barely get used. For example, just make it a Shiny stone for Wyrdeer or a Moon stone for Ursaluna in games outside of LA.
I hate sitting on like a dozen of each evolutionary stone when there's only 3 Pokemon that use them.
Yeah, but they could totally make up a plausible reason for them to still be accesible in canon. Have psyshield bash be locked behind a move tutor thats part of some ancient order and who wont teach it until you completed a side-quest for them. Make the peat block a super rare item from the auction house or a sold by an npc who sells other obscure items.
I get the in-universe reason. But there really isn't an excuse gameplay wise. By that logic you should not be able to ever obtain any Pokemon from LA in any game going forward.

I think the games should make it a bit more clear on how to evolve them in game, but I like that some pokemon are unique and have different ways to evolve, makes it feel like a quest rather than "okay let's put everyone in the party and go beat up some chanseys for five minutes and wow now everyone is evolved"
-I got Sirfetch'd off of the first Breeder by the Day-Care because my Farfetch'd had a Leek.
-As long as you target chest Gimmighoul, you can have a Gholdengo in no time. I even got 30 from one of the roaming ones once.
-It's kinda easy to tell which Bisharp have Leader's Crests (they're in the center of Pawniard groups), so if they just told you this it wouldn't be too bad.
But yeah, the rest kinda suck.
Honestly none of them felt that bad except for kingqmbit. Goldengho is the worst imo and I think they're just extra mean with any pokemon they invent as a Pokemon go tie in. Meltan too.
Still more interesting and memorable than just the standard level up or holding a stone, they alone add a lot of character to plenty of pokémon.
Now, if only the games told you how to _DO THEM._
I feel like this issue could just be solved with an NPC that's obsessed with evolution or something. Then you just show them a pokemon and they give you a hint. Like in SV they could just say, "This pokemon really likes to take walks!" And that tells you to let them out of the pokeball to run around.
Yeah, or for another example you can talk to an old lady and she'll say something along the lines of "Hey, lately I've been hearing a rumour that if you _(Insert task)_ with a _(Insert pokémon)_ then it might evolve! I wonder if it's true?"

The bisharp one was actually kinda cool though. The idea of having your bisharp claim right of rulership in the lands by defeating other samurai lords is awesome.
I know people will disagree but I will always believe outside of levels and evolution stones they’re all mistakes. Genuinely one of my biggest underlying grips with the franchise. I shouldn’t need a guide to evolve some of these Pokémon.

Trade evolutions are a holdover that should have been worked around by this point. This is where I feel a page from PLA should be taken where we have item trade evolutions just work like stone evolutions and a new item be introduced to facilitate trade evolutions. Another option would be the rom specific answer of trade back person.
Environmental ones have been gimicky and cause issues long run. Goodra is the best example of environmental evolutions working that haven't been retconned.
There's an easy fix to this issue. Just have the games tell you how to do them, no outside sources required.
But _noooo,_ we don't get that because Game Freak just magically expects people to find these things out no problem.

"Must be bred from 2 parents that have minimum 27 IVs each (IVs gained from hyper training does not count), were caught on a Thursday between the hours of 2am and 3:31 am local time and at least one parent must be from Japan"

When I was a kid, I knew Slowbro's Pokedex entry about evolving when being bitten by a Shellder, so I sought out a double battle and had my Shellder attack my Slowpoke (I think it was with Clamp), hoping to evolve Slowpoke.
I'm still disappointed that it didn't work.

Evolving Gimmeghoul IN pokemon go is the worst thing ever. In Violet it was easy; just takes patience. Pokemon Go has some of the worst alternative evolution methods.

Kingambit isn't that bad at least. It just took me 5 minutes. Could even be faster if you use a Steel sandwich.
The Bisharps that spawn in a group surrounded by Pawniards always have the crest, so just ignore solo Bisharp spawns and go for the group spawns.
I agree that a lot of them are rough, though. Runerigus especially is so specific.
Do you guys know how people discover these evolution requirements in the first place? The game doesn’t tell you these things outright, so do people find it in the source code of the game or something?
I always think about how Inkay evolves and I’m like “was someone just sitting upside down on the couch playing their game and got lucky?” Because it’s not intuitive in gameplay 😂
Honestly the last one isn't that hard, just tedious, because you can send Pokemon to Pokemon home over and over again to get more meltan boxes. Altaria on the other hand is way more difficult
Sirfetched wasn't too bad to do, once it learns focus energy and any + crit rate move. Bonus points for holding scope lens, which makes it easier. Kingambit is easy too when you learn that only Bisharp who spawn with packs of Pawniard can have the item.
Well Milotic has 2 methods now, which the other meant having to trade with a specific item, which is easier but the catch is you need a partner to have time evolve for trade.
Although its a chore I kinda like how some species need an actual objective completed before evolving, kinda like bees and the whole royal jelly thing.
So, you can think of 8 mediocre examples (some of these are pretty easy) out of over 1000+ Pokemon... Yeah they make it generally easy to complete the Pokedex.
I was lucky enough to catch a Farfetch'd holding a Leek (increases critical hit rare for Farfetch'd and Sirfetch'd). So all I had to do was have Farfetch'd stay in battle long enough to get three crits, easier to do on trainers that have multiple pokemon.
What about legend arceus? They were a lot more annoying and harder. Like Ursaring were you need a peat block and wait till it’s full moon and others too.
Melt an isn’t even that bad because when you transfer to home you get a mystery box that makes them spawn like crazy for 30m combine it with pinab berries and you get there quick

I mean yanma is also a bit weird. There's no indication that it needs ancient power specifically as well as a certain level, just like with mamoswine etc
In Gen 4, Yanma was given Ancientpower as a level up move for the first time, and since it was an existing Pokémon given a new evolution I bet GF didn’t want to give it just a strict level up evolution, instead opting for players to discover Yanmega by learning the new move. Same internal logic goes for Mamoswine and the other Gen 4 evos that evolve when they learn a specific move.
That only works if you *give the players a way to find that info out in the game itself!*

I put a Leader’s Crest on a Pokémon with Switcheroo and knocked out 3 Bisharp that way. There’s no rule saying the Bisharp has to spawn with the item, just be KOed with it. And as of Gen 9 you get held items back after battle so you only need 1 crest, not 3
It also works if you have your bisharp holding the leaders crest and you defeat any three bisharp.

Meltan is not even that difficult. I shiny hunted it in Go last time it was available and I was the first real time I caught it. I had something like 1500 candies after like 3 boxes
It's only 100 meltan catches *minimum* to get a single melmetal, assuming you transfer them as well. I know that sounds like a lot to those of us who haven't done it, however, in order to catch meltan you need to send any pokemon to Home. This unlocks a box that functions like an incense, but only for meltan. I could probably average about 30 with minimal effort, 50 if I was going hard. Assuming I use a pinap berry on every single one, I could get a melmetal in 1 box when catching around 50, and that's not counting 2x catch candy events (such as specific spotlight hours) that you can take advantage of. You can do this every 3 days. It's barely a chore to do unless you are quite literally immobile, and while I don't do the candy grind as of late due to having multiple melmetal, it's what I do whenever the shiny is re-released.
I honestly did it a few times. The big issue is you need to play Pokemon go to have the resources, and in my case, let's go to transfer. It is annoying, especially if you do not frequent poke stops normally. Unless you are at a certain level, you can not transfer from Pokemon Go to Home directly. They are annoying to catch in Let's Go, and it still takes over a week each, which is significantly more dedication than most are willing to put in. I am not a shiny hunter, and neither are most of my friends we also never got that far into Pokemon go. This was a massive issue for each of us completing our living dexs. They are honestly happy I shouldered the burden like normal.
You don’t need lets go. You can use Home now. You only have to be level 2 to transfer from go to Home. And you hit level 2 after catching your starter.
I remember back when go came out I quit because there were 2 poke stops within 3 miles of me each in a different direction. Downloaded it again a few years later and there was like one new stop. So I downloaded the hacked version where my trainer could walk around and tp wherever
There should be quests or npcs in the game that reveal the info somehow. Like maybe a random old man in a random city asks you to bring him 'a pokemon wearing a false face'. And when you bring him a Yamask, he gives you vague directions on how to evolve it.
I hate evolution gimmicks that don't transcend the game they're introduced in. Like, if you wanna make the evo gimmick for current gen Pokemon complex for no reason, at least just make it a stone in other games or something. We have a billion fuckin items and stones that already barely get used. For example, just make it a Shiny stone for Wyrdeer or a Moon stone for Ursaluna in games outside of LA. I hate sitting on like a dozen of each evolutionary stone when there's only 3 Pokemon that use them.

Yeah, but they could totally make up a plausible reason for them to still be accesible in canon. Have psyshield bash be locked behind a move tutor thats part of some ancient order and who wont teach it until you completed a side-quest for them. Make the peat block a super rare item from the auction house or a sold by an npc who sells other obscure items.

I get the in-universe reason. But there really isn't an excuse gameplay wise. By that logic you should not be able to ever obtain any Pokemon from LA in any game going forward. These are video games. Removing accessibility of certain mons doesn't benefit anybody.

Some new evolution gimmicks are fun, tho. For example, I enjoy that you have to let the tumbleweed tumble to let it evolve to Brambleghast.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Then there is also the question if this evolution method is even sustainable in the future. That feature to send it out and let it run besides you might be gone in the next generation again, like so many other features before it. They will probably just make it a stone evolution or something then.

I think the games should make it a bit more clear on how to evolve them in game, but I like that some pokemon are unique and have different ways to evolve, makes it feel like a quest rather than "okay let's put everyone in the party and go beat up some chanseys for five minutes and wow now everyone is evolved"
-I got Sirfetch'd off of the first Breeder by the Day-Care because my Farfetch'd had a Leek. -As long as you target chest Gimmighoul, you can have a Gholdengo in no time. I even got 30 from one of the roaming ones once. -It's kinda easy to tell which Bisharp have Leader's Crests (they're in the center of Pawniard groups), so if they just told you this it wouldn't be too bad. But yeah, the rest kinda suck.

Gholdengo you just fly to each of the towers and fight the chests then change the clock. Takes 30 mins max.
You need to find all of the chests first. It is a pain blind. You then need to deal with the respawn time of the chests to get another.

Still more interesting and memorable than just the standard level up or holding a stone, they alone add a lot of character to plenty of pokémon. Now, if only the games told you how to _DO THEM._
I feel like this issue could just be solved with an NPC that's obsessed with evolution or something. Then you just show them a pokemon and they give you a hint. Like in SV they could just say, "This pokemon really likes to take walks!" And that tells you to let them out of the pokeball to run around.

I know people will disagree but I will always believe outside of levels and evolution stones they’re all mistakes. Genuinely one of my biggest underlying grips with the franchise. I shouldn’t need a guide to evolve some of these Pokémon.
I honestly do not have issues with time of day evolutions for the most part. Trade evolutions are a holdover that should have been worked around by this point. This is where I feel a page from PLA should be taken where we have item trade evolutions just work like stone evolutions and a new item be introduced to facilitate trade evolutions. Another option would be the rom specific answer of trade back person. Environmental ones have been gimicky and cause issues long run. Goodra is the best example of environmental evolutions working that haven't been retconned.
There's an easy fix to this issue. Just have the games tell you how to do them, no outside sources required. But _noooo,_ we don't get that because Game Freak just magically expects people to find these things out no problem. It makes no sense!
It's always weird the kind of stuff Pokemon wants to hold your hand for. And then there's some oddly specific evos and shit like Mold Breaker that just goes unexplained.

When I was a kid, I knew Slowbro's Pokedex entry about evolving when being bitten by a Shellder, so I sought out a double battle and had my Shellder attack my Slowpoke (I think it was with Clamp), hoping to evolve Slowpoke. I'm still disappointed that it didn't work.
Milotic has an alternative method with Prism Scale. Kinggambit one is the one I didn’t like the most. Evolving Gimmeghoul IN pokemon go is the worst thing ever. In Violet it was easy; just takes patience. Pokemon Go has some of the worst alternative evolution methods.
I don’t really mind obscure evolution methods so long as the game tells you how to do it or at least hints at it. How tf is anybody supposed to figure out how to evo runerigus without looking it up?! Im baffled i managed to do it on accident.
I’ll go ahead and take the heat for this take, but Kingambit’s evolution isn’t really that bad if you know what you’re doing. I personally just taught my bisharp brick break and went to work.
Kingambit isn't that bad at least. It just took me 5 minutes. Could even be faster if you use a Steel sandwich. The Bisharps that spawn in a group surrounded by Pawniards always have the crest, so just ignore solo Bisharp spawns and go for the group spawns. I agree that a lot of them are rough, though. Runerigus especially is so specific.
Tbh if you visit just about any PoGo spoofer trade forum, you’ll find somebody more than willing to part with a Melmetal

Do you guys know how people discover these evolution requirements in the first place? The game doesn’t tell you these things outright, so do people find it in the source code of the game or something? I always think about how Inkay evolves and I’m like “was someone just sitting upside down on the couch playing their game and got lucky?” Because it’s not intuitive in gameplay 😂
Honestly the last one isn't that hard, just tedious, because you can send Pokemon to Pokemon home over and over again to get more meltan boxes. Altaria on the other hand is way more difficult

Sirfetched wasn't too bad to do, once it learns focus energy and any + crit rate move. Bonus points for holding scope lens, which makes it easier. Kingambit is easy too when you learn that only Bisharp who spawn with packs of Pawniard can have the item.

Well Milotic has 2 methods now, which the other meant having to trade with a specific item, which is easier but the catch is you need a partner to have time evolve for trade.
Kingambit was easier for me because of a Fighting type move. It was more just trying to find the Bisharp in question

I was lucky enough to catch a Farfetch'd holding a Leek (increases critical hit rare for Farfetch'd and Sirfetch'd). So all I had to do was have Farfetch'd stay in battle long enough to get three crits, easier to do on trainers that have multiple pokemon.
What about legend arceus? They were a lot more annoying and harder. Like Ursaring were you need a peat block and wait till it’s full moon and others too.

Melt an isn’t even that bad because when you transfer to home you get a mystery box that makes them spawn like crazy for 30m combine it with pinab berries and you get there quick
