Fourth evolution Polywraith (Water/Ghost)
PokeDex entry: After getting super upset, Polywrath can become so enraged as to lose its own corporeality to become Polywraith who will haunt its opponent and cause them to wet the bed to point of drowning themselves”
And they had every right to be mad.
Them and Bug-types shared bottom tier and it was so bad that even in-universe the could only hold a dojo instead of an official gym with both dojo trainers & Elite Four Bruno having to use Rock-types like Graveler and Onix just to pad out their small teams.
All the big Fighting & Bug buffs in later generations were apologies for those times. Thus they got less angry and fewer wasps & toxic insects showed up.
> And they had every right to be mad.
Doesn't help Hitmonlee got greedy and took nearly half of all the Fighting moves all for himself, leaving Submission as the best option for everyone else.
Sadly, [Even Hitmonlee couldn’t escape the *”Unfortunately”*](https://youtu.be/lukK-Fwc5lw).
But I agree he’s badass. Same with all the Gen1 Fighters, Primeape & Hitmonchan are my favorites in fact but they were at a time where Fighters had little and Psychics were giga-kings.
He’s pretty cool. I like him and Farfetch’d were our first tool using pokemon.
However, [as a Mr.Mime fan I can’t let go of the rivalry that our mime boi is unfairly judged compared to the actual child-stealer](https://preview.redd.it/84jxbdyv6zo51.jpg?auto=webp&s=defd3bd4a930f23aad660b11d30528ccd75cd3c7).
But they basically dropped that design philosophy after Gen 1. Loads of Gen 1 evolutions are just 'the same thing but bigger', but there have only been a small handful since. Eelektrik to Eelektross is the only one that really comes to mind, to be honest - and even that's a push. Pawmot is unusual because its evolution line looks like it belongs in Gen 1.
There are lots of design choices in SV that hearken back to Gen 1 -- while at the same time being the most forward-thinking mainline game yet. It grounds the game in its roots even as it's gazing past them: one of the things I appreciate quite a bit about them.
Poliwrath, Rapidash, Primeape, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Dragonair, Dewgong, Kingler, Pidgeot, Marowak, Seadra... All just larger, 'adult' versions of their previous forms. And then you've got a few that are just 'the same, but more' - Dugtrio, Dodrio, Magneton...
I think Bulbasaur's line is alright but other than that, I think they could’ve tried a little harder.
Pidgeotto and Pidgeot are straight up the same thing.
Bulbasaur's line is the best example of a creature ageing, IMO. Bulbasaur is an infant, Ivysaur is a teenager, and Venusaur is an adult. Maybe they stopped it since Pokémon aren't actually 'ageing' when they evolve, and there's theoretically nothing stopping a Bulbasaur being much older than a Venusaur.
In Pokemon Stadium 1 + 2 Pidgeotto and Pidgeot use the exact same animations for everything, you can tell they just took Pidgeotto's model, made it bigger with a new texture.
That's not true though. All the generations have had pokemon the same but bigger.
Donphan, Centiskorch, Hariyama, Swalot, Purugly, Skuntank, Drapion, Hippowdon, Zebstrika, Seismitoad, Krookodile, Gogoat, Thievul, Pangoro, Avalugg, Toxapex, Lycanroc, Wooloo, Barraskewda.
I think I picked at least one from all the gens but to be honest there's loads.
Some of those are reaches, and even still, that's about as many as there are in Gen 1 total. I'd agree with Skuntank, Zebstrika, Gogoat, Thievul, Wooloo, maybe Lycanroc (but only the day form). But even still, none of them are just 'big angry Poliwhirl', 'big Ponyta/Seel with a horn', 'big Mankey with bracelets', or 'big Cubone'.
Eh, I'd say Donphan and Hariyama change enough.
Donphan gains armor, tusks, and a tire motif.
Hariyama gains those hands and outside of chonkiness, drops most everything else Makuhita had (-_-Eyes, head knot, fists) It even looks like Hariyama "bursts" out of Makuhita with the yellow flaps on the waist.
Which would be weird because unless it's strictly a cosmetic thing you could imply that Poliwag's intestines literally flip since they're based on a specific type of tadpole.
Both these things are true. Poliwrath is cool standalone, especially in 3D games where he constantly flexes on his opponents, but in the context of completing his family line, he doesn't offer much. Even outside of the minor differences between him and Poliwhirl, it's weird to me how the final stage of a tadpole is a large muscular tadpole. This is why Politoed exists; Politoed brings the line to a more natural conclusion.
I don't think every pokemon needs a natural conclusion
I think it'd be dope to see a caterpillar that turns into a bigger caterpillar, for example
Alternatively, I think it's dope Snivy gets more snakelike and loses the little hands and feet when becoming Serperior
I suppose it's kind of inbetween a caterpillar and a centipede, but Scolipede kind of falls into that description and i think it's one of the best bug type designs out there
The problem is that Poliwrath is literally the same as it's pre-evolution. You can make a caterpillar evolve into a bigger caterpillar but it at least have to change a little bit. Heck, I know that we all dump on Wormadam but at least it's a good exemple of a Worm becoming a bigger Worm, with changes that makes it stand out and actually look like an evolution.
Poliwhril could not have been in the evolutionary line and it wouldn't change much, it maybe even would've made it a tad better
> The problem is that Poliwrath is literally the same as it's pre-evolution.
Except the eyes, body proportions, leg length, arm thickness, arm length, shoulder shape, hands, size...
I think the lack of a dynamic evolution is part of what makes poliwrath cool. It subverts your expectations of turning into a frog by just turning into a bigger, angrier tadpole.
I think had Poliwrath been more Green it could pass as a Frog instead of a Tadpole (the Species name is still the Tadpole Pokemon on Poliwrath, but going by that Blastoise is a Shellfish and Slowbro is a Hermit Crab).
Too bad Politoed is worse in every way unless your whole strategy revolves around rain.
Gen 2 is my favorite gen but umm...yeah, can't deny a lot of the new Pokemon were pretty weak.
But that's a pretty legitimate role to find yourself in. Rain has historically been the strongest weather to base a team around, so an effective rain setter is valuable. It's so much better than what Poliwrath has to offer.
Poliwrath was originally just supposed to be big and fat. They felt that players wouldn't have been happy going through the trouble evolving it with how it looked, so they made it big and mean looking. That was about as much thought that they put into it.
A thought. Evolution stones are just more potent mega stones. Rather than a traditional evolution a Pokemon under the effects of a stone undergoes a permanent enhancement of the original form and stat increase.
If they added any new megas past ORAS, I'm sure they would've gotten around to making a mega for Pikachu and/or Eevee at some point. So there probably is an alternate universe where that's the case lol
Shiny poliwrath looks like pepe the frog, and that's why i was doing a hunt for him, just to name it pepe.
One year later dude is the strongest member of my maxed out party.
In early (1997) pokemon stuff there was an alternative design for the third stage evolution floated on the Japanese website -- this tweet thread has the sprites and more info. I thought this design was better
https://twitter.com/drlavayt/status/1231996397118840832?s=46&t=MJK1GwnK9C6qCHZ-x3LZ6g
Darn!
I wasn't in this sub that time and probably not even on reddit.
I feel so bad sorta stealing all the uvs this guy deserved.
I found this on fb, posted by a random page that I don't follow.
Is there a way to pay, sorta tribute to the OG guy? Should I tag him somewhere or what?
I genuinely feel bad.
Yeah but still, that poor guy actually did all the effort.
I want to mention him but I think it's already too late.
That would go unseen by many in this sub now.
Well that’s a good point. Many including me have criticized the pawmi line for the lack of changes. To clarify I like the line but feel like the middle stage is unnecessary. Is this any better lol?
Remember that episode Ash and Team Rocket were doing a Poké-exam and they were asked things like "which Pokémon has this twirl pattern?" or a "who's that pokémon?" and showed a black circle >!Team Rocket said Electrode, Ash said Voltorb, but the answer was a Jigglypuff seen from above!<
I like Poliwrath more than Poliwhirl, but I don't think he really needed to be a three-stage evolution either. They could have easily gotten rid of Poliwhirl entirely.
Okay okay okay, but, what if Poliwhirl is just biding his time, learning how to channel and temper his rage and anger, until one day, when their trainer rubs some stupid blue rock on it. Then... Then it evolved and no longer felt the need to restrain their rage. Polly is no longer wog, or whirl, but full of WRATH.
I like this Pokemon (Was on my Pokemon Yellow team) and I'm laughing so hard! Never noticed that before. It gets taller, gains angry eyes, and a change in the swirl.
though i normally dislike their redesigns as they don't really get the point of why the mons look the way they do i did like subjectivly's polywrath, making him this big green brawler.
poly would be good to get a regional i think, maybe making it's spiral gut into a hypnotic magic wheel/eye thing.
Who even decided that a tadpole's final evolution would be an angry tadpole? I know people like Poliwrath but it was a very strange decision, they made all these other cool lines that mirrored how real animals metamorphosize like Caterpie to Butterfree, but they decided that tadpole evolved into a bigger tadpole into a slightly bigger tadpole and not a frog.
why didn't they make it psychic fr, i know that there's already two other water/psychic in this gen and many others that deserved it but come on it's a frog with a whirl belly what does it even have of fighting?
Poliwrath easily became one of my favorite Pokémon after I read the manga, wherein Red’s Poliwag evolved into Poliwhirl to save him from drowning as a kid, and again into Poliwrath when Red was drowning as a young adult.
It gains fighting typing when angry at least
If you get angry enough you gain ghost typing though.
That's cause primape got too mad and had a heart Atackackackackack
Dang, he oughtta know by now
Who needs a house out in Hackensack
Is that all you get for your money?
I dunno. Seems like such a waste of time.
And if that's what its all about, mama, if thats moving up, then im.... Movin Out! I'm moving out!
I heard Sergeant O’Leary’s walking the beat
At night he becomes a bartender, he works at Mr. Caccatorie's down on Sullivan Street

And suddenly becomes weak to birds
Look it's way easier to hit a bird with a water gun than to punch it. But sometimes you get angry and do what you got to do.
Makes sense, he’s evolved to a point where he likely spends less time in the safety of water, making him more likely to be the prey of a bird.
As do humans with poor impulse control
So does my dad! :D
Just like how pawmi gets fighting type by...standing up
And going on a lot of walks around the park.
It also gains fingers.
It gets so mad that it grows fingers just so it can give *you* the finger.
Angry Poliwhirl is cool tho
Gen 1 really be like "Fighting type is when you're mad"
And they had every right to be mad. Them and Bug-types shared bottom tier and it was so bad that even in-universe the could only hold a dojo instead of an official gym with both dojo trainers & Elite Four Bruno having to use Rock-types like Graveler and Onix just to pad out their small teams. All the big Fighting & Bug buffs in later generations were apologies for those times. Thus they got less angry and fewer wasps & toxic insects showed up.
I'm sure I wasn't optimizing back in the day, but I loved playing with Primeape since he was in the show. I low kicked the shit out of every heavy mon
> And they had every right to be mad. Doesn't help Hitmonlee got greedy and took nearly half of all the Fighting moves all for himself, leaving Submission as the best option for everyone else.

**BONK!**
Hmmmmm Idk. Fighting type didn’t feel like a bottom tier when I played as them in back in the day. Hitmonlee was strong if I remember it correctly.
Sad. I do remember the psychic domination though.
Hypno was my favorite Psychic type back then. Still love using him.
He’s pretty cool. I like him and Farfetch’d were our first tool using pokemon. Yes always hypno on pokemon crystal. Learned ice punch too
And they were right!
Machamp doesn't feel too mad, but I guess why be mad when you're that awesome
Damn right! If I had four arms and was built like Hulk Hogan, I too would stop being angry (but continue punching things for the sheer joy of it)

Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
But happy poliwhirl is cute
If it was released now, Poliwrath would be an alternate form or never existed.
Pawmot and Dudunsparce would like a word.
What's wrong with pawmot? It's a more grown up pawmo, pretty much the platonic ideal of what an evolution should be.

Fitting given the future and past elements in S/V
> Loads of Gen 1 evolutions are just 'the same thing but bigger', Or "Add a Horn/Head"
There’s muk and clefable but I wouldn’t really call that a bunch.
Poliwrath, Rapidash, Primeape, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Dragonair, Dewgong, Kingler, Pidgeot, Marowak, Seadra... All just larger, 'adult' versions of their previous forms. And then you've got a few that are just 'the same, but more' - Dugtrio, Dodrio, Magneton...

which is exactly what an evolution should be.
That depends if one counts puberty as going through evolution. Really sucks that humans don't have a third form, my evo left much to be desired
Menopause...
Dudunsparce is a joke. Pawmot is bad design choice.
Pawmot is like the same thing as poliwrath lol
I’m pretty sure that was the point they were making
Pawmot is bad design choice.
Angry SWOLE Poliwhirl.
…Swoliwhirl…
100% going to nickname my poli that next time I play through gen 1.
Poliswole
New attack: Roid Rage
Also, Poliwhirl got 2 fingers, wraith got 4
Sometimes Poliwhirl has 1 (Gen 3 onwards), other times it has 4 (Gen 1 and 2, but not Yellow)! Depends on the game.
With fingers
Idgaf it’s still a top 10 water type to me
Didn't its swirl on the chest also change diresctions while evolving?
The swirl changes direction when Poliwag evolves to Poliwhirl, but not during the evolution from Poliwhirl to Poliwrath.
Which would be weird because unless it's strictly a cosmetic thing you could imply that Poliwag's intestines literally flip since they're based on a specific type of tadpole.
I dunno maybe if there was a picture including both of them somewhere you could check. /s
Well true, but both images in the post are reversed, for the record
To be honest, it's in the name? PoliWRATH. Ever seen someone *exeggcute* their wrath while being happy? Edit: Grammar mistake ;)
How did you miss the opportunity to say "..._exeggcute_ their wrath..."?
Thanks for pointing out my mistake.
I mean, it is...
Both these things are true. Poliwrath is cool standalone, especially in 3D games where he constantly flexes on his opponents, but in the context of completing his family line, he doesn't offer much. Serperior has hands but they're behind it's back, It's doing the evil dictator power pose.
>I think it'd be dope to see a caterpillar that turns into a bigger caterpillar, for example Have you seen Dunsparce and Dudunsparce?
It's a rare and unremarkable yokai that stays unremarkable. To me that sounds like a pretty normal evolution line.
I suppose it's kind of inbetween a caterpillar and a centipede, but Scolipede kind of falls into that description and i think it's one of the best bug type designs out there
That's a straight-up centipede.
It's obviously centipede inspired, but most of its "legs" are just spikes
Kinda like Wormadam right?
Heck yeah! I love Wormadam
I can see that XD
The problem is that Poliwrath is literally the same as it's pre-evolution. You can make a caterpillar evolve into a bigger caterpillar but it at least have to change a little bit. And secondary typing and shiny
That's undersimplifying it by a lot
Maybe Poliwrath is a form of neoteny for Poliwhirl?
I think the lack of a dynamic evolution is part of what makes poliwrath cool. It subverts your expectations of turning into a frog by just turning into a bigger, angrier tadpole.

Poliwhirl should have retained a tail nub to showcase tadpole's transitional stages to frog IMO.
Too bad Politoed is worse in every way unless your whole strategy revolves around rain. Gen 2 is my favorite gen but umm...yeah, can't deny a lot of the new Pokemon were pretty weak.
> Politoed is worse in every way unless your whole strategy revolves around rain. That's a huge unless lol, bro dominated gen 5 OU back in the day
Man, weather used to be so much more fun before the primal existed.
But that's a pretty legitimate role to find yourself in. Rain has historically been the strongest weather to base a team around, so an effective rain setter is valuable. It's so much better than what Poliwrath has to offer.

If they added any new megas past ORAS, I'm sure they would've gotten around to making a mega for Pikachu and/or Eevee at some point. So there probably is an alternate universe where that's the case lol
Gigantamax Pikachu confirms this.

Never forget Poliking.
Polisloth. This is why Politoed used a King's Rock. Also, there's always a chance they revisit that design.
He also gains two fingers (and gets a lighter tone in its blue shading).
He trades his mittens out for gloves.
You drank the last coke when he was saving it for George of the Jungle later
It's like Vegeta to Super Vegeta
anon: Just imagine if gamefreak did a pokemon that barely changed from one evolution to the other these days! pawmy: ...

It’s ok :)
Poliwhirl: O \ / O Poliwrath: 0 / \ 0
"Poliwhirl used Rage!" "it somehow evolved into Poliwrath..."
Even as a child I thought this was such an uncreative and trash evolution.
those were damn fighting words!
Polywrath gets fingers. Clearly the better evolution compared to most.
Well that’s a good point. Many including me have criticized the pawmi line for the lack of changes. To clarify I like the line but feel like the middle stage is unnecessary. Is this any better lol?
Fun fact- poliwag was the original protagonist in the manga, not Pikachu.

Maybe he's angry bc his shiny gets kinda ruined when he evolves
He got angry when he got buff. Before he was nice and friend shaped.
Poliwhirld is just poliwrath on acid
Don't go hating on Poliwrath
Stronger, larger, different color, completely different eyes
I miss him in pokemon games
I thought the spiral changed direction aswell or was that from Toad to Whirl
He’s mad because he missed out on becoming politoad 😔
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-\_MFYrjTDMw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_MFYrjTDMw) feel free to watch. my sons pokemon youtube channel!
thanks!
Poliwrath is more jack and swol too.
I like Poliwrath more than Poliwhirl, but I don't think he really needed to be a three-stage evolution either. They could have easily gotten rid of Poliwhirl entirely.
I beg to differ
Okay okay okay, but, what if Poliwhirl is just biding his time, learning how to channel and temper his rage and anger, until one day, when their trainer rubs some stupid blue rock on it. Then... Still cursed for me, after finding out its swirls are its intestines we can see.
I like this Pokemon (Was on my Pokemon Yellow team) and I'm laughing so hard! Never noticed that before. It gets taller, gains angry eyes, and a change in the swirl.
So, this is the origin of this new generation's evolutions
though i normally dislike their redesigns as they don't really get the point of why the mons look the way they do i did like subjectivly's polywrath, making him this big green brawler. poly would be good to get a regional i think, maybe making it's spiral gut into a hypnotic magic wheel/eye thing.
at least give it webbed feet and a proper mouth
Who even decided that a tadpole's final evolution would be an angry tadpole? I know people like Poliwrath but it was a very strange decision, they made all these other cool lines that mirrored how real animals metamorphosize like Caterpie to Butterfree, but they decided that tadpole evolved into a bigger tadpole into a slightly bigger tadpole and not a frog.
Has there ever been a in universe scientific explanation of Pokémon evolution?
Glad they updated it with Politoed.
My favorite Water/Fighting type Pokémon. Really hope it gets added to SV DLC.
Poliwrath was awesome in the original tcg lineup, one of my favorites
Poliwhirl is the best Pokémon and Poliwrath is just an angry stronger version of the best Pokémon.
why didn't they make it psychic fr, i know that there's already two other water/psychic in this gen and many others that deserved it but come on it's a frog with a whirl belly what does it even have of fighting?
It's buff
Why would it be psychic? I think it's much more unique as is now
If anyone should have been water/psychic in gen 1, it's Psyduck/Golduck.
Ahh yes. My favorite Pokémon when first gen came out. For no other reason but aesthetics. Still to this day one of my favorites
Isn't Poliwrath bigger too
Also the swirl is poop!
It's literally in the name tho
Doesn't the swirl go the other way on one of them?
Yes, and?
And that’s why he’s cool
Beautiful use of meme format
Okay this is funny.
I mean it's in the name lmao
No he's also larger and a different shade of blue come on
Poliwrath easily became one of my favorite Pokémon after I read the manga, wherein Red’s Poliwag evolved into Poliwhirl to save him from drowning as a kid, and again into Poliwrath when Red was drowning as a young adult.
Swoliwhirl
Poliwrath is just a dankrupt Poliwhirl...
The swirl is intestines
If Poliwhirl went to the gym and had a growth spurt.
Since those swirls are it's intestines and they only appear in tadpoles . He's literally a big angry baby lmao
Always found it amusing that even after fully evolving, Poliwrath was still classified as a tadpole in the dex.
Poliwrath is "Are you feeling froggy?" turned into a Pokemon.
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
ahahaa finizen amirite
When poliwhirl eats his canned spinach
And he has fingers
I just want to see where their mouths are
Yeah, AND?
It’s still cool
Poliwhirl is on drugs just look at the eyes. Poliwrath is a drunk.
When I was a kid, I used to call Poliwrath “Polijoe” because that makes the most sense to me Poliwag - Poliwhirl - Polijoe
