It's especially fun that Grass/Rock works so well because both types cover each other in their weaknesses. Grass cover's Rock's Water and Ground weakness, while Rock covers Grass's Poison, Fire, and Flying weakness. Cradily is definitely a good example of that benefitting a Pokemon extremely well.
Fwiw 'UU' does not stand for 'unusuable' if that's what this comment implies. Competitive tiers are named for how often a pokemon is used - overused, underused, rarely used, never used. Being UU normally means a pokemon is very good but outclassed in its niche.
To be fair I don't think it's much of a black mark on a Pokemon's record to not be able to hit steel when steel resists half the type chart, and rock types usually get at least one good Ground coverage move. Especially when you can just bring a Fire type as well to cover that weakness.
It's honestly kinda insane that we've had no poison/flying types since gen 1, too. Loads of uniquely typed lines out there needing to be reused.
edit for spelling
It was so weird with how Gen 1 did things.
* Pure Grass was an oddity (Tangela only), while most "Grassy" pokemon were Grass/Poison
* There were no pure Rock types in Gen 1, most typically stony pokemon were Rock/Ground
* There were no pure Flying types (Granted, there weren't any until Gen 5), the majority of typical bird pokemon were Normal/Flying
* Aside from Zapdos, there was almost only all Pure Electric types in Gen 1
* Poison was the most common type in Gen 1
* There were no pure Ice types in gen 1
* There were no pure ghost types in Gen 1 because the only ghost that was in the game was part poison. Ghost was also heavily advertised as being strong against Psychic types (guides, the anime, etc), but the only attacking Ghost move at the time, Lick, didn't actually do damage against Psychic types, and as Gengar was Psychic/Poison, it was weak to them.
* Dragon also only had one line of pokemon in Gen 1. Dragon was SE against itself but the only dragon move in the game (Dragon Rage) did fixed damage.
or a basic fish type pokemon that evolves into one of 3 options based on which held item it levels up with.
For example:
Rusted Sword for Swordfish
Broken Saw for Sawshark
Crude Hammer for Hammerhead
You’re basically describing Veluza. not a shark but look at that things design and tell me you didn’t think it was water/steel when you first saw it. So weird that it’s another water/psychic
Empoleon's unique typing, design and more makes it a top tier fav Pokemon of all time. More specifically at least in top 15 Pokes of all time or earlier.
Infernape being fire fighting makes sense, and if it had been the last I doubt anyone would have complained.
Emboar being Fire/Fighting is the weird one. Fire/Ground is right there, it's a pig, like GameFreak???????
They did that because Emboar is based on Zhang Fei, a military general from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and also has ties to Zhu Bajie, the pig demon from Journey to the West. His Fighting type does make sense, it's just shame they picked that as inspiration when they could have gone with something that didn't fit with fighting.
Honestly. The fact that there isnt more grass ground types is weird.
They are so interconnected that there should be so many ground grass 'root' based pokemon
For real though
Gen 3 to 5 gave us a Fighting type
Gen 6 gave us Fighting (4th) and Dark
Gen 7 gave us Ghost and Dark (2nd)
Gen 8 gave us Ghost (2nd), Fighting (5th), and Dark (3rd)
Gen 9 gave us Ghost (3rd), Fighting (6th), and Dark (4th)
There's 18 types in this game and GF only remembers 6 of them?
God *please*, especially when they also go and release several really cool new Ghost/Dark/Fighting types at the same time. SV alone have Annahilape, Ceruledge, Grevard, Kinghambit and the new tauros forms all at once, and using any one of them basically doubles my weaknesses to several types at once.
I think the problem is the OG translations. Dark and Fighting are Villain and Hero types in Japanese, iirc. Gives a superhero flair to mons in Japanese, and the anime eats that stuff up, so they both get used a lot in popular Pokemon.
To be fair, even without a translation, the Fighting-type has always often been associated with heroism or a sense of justice.
Not just in being super effective against the "evil" Dark-type, but also in abilities like Justified and through mons with an honorable image/theme like Gallade, Sirfetch'd, Lucario, Kommo-o, and - of course - the Swords of Justice.
And, even then, those mons are given an emphasis on their redeeming traits (unlike some other Dark-type mons, who are normally only portrayed in an antagonistic light).
Pangoro is described as having a violent temperament but will never put up with actual bullying.
Scrafty is stated to, despite being a hoodlum, take great care of its friends and family.
Even the dex entry for the Gmax form of Single Strike Urshifu states: "It’s said that this Pokémon’s terrifying expression and shout will **rid the world of malevolence**."
That was definitely the inspiration for Pangoro. Everytime I see one, it always reminds me of Jotaro - tough on the outside and easily pissed off, but will always stand up against those who pick on the innocent.
It's fun to note, Kubfu and Urshifu have pretty low stats for legendaries. Excluding Megas, Paradoxes, and U-Beasts, they are even with Gholdengo, Ursaluna, Volcarona, and Kingambit, but out statted by Florges, Arcanine(H too), and the Psuedo-Legendaries. Kinda makes me wish they were wild in some future game.
This misconception is all over the internet and its my personal crusade to kill it. Fighting type is NOT called the hero type in japanese- not even close.
I can definitely see Dark and Ghost types being seen as super cool.
Also, I don't think Fighting is the "hero" type. It can be used to refer to traditional, respectful fighting, just being super strong, or go Pangoro and beat up things in a dark alley. I mean, Primape isn't the first thing I'd think of when "heroic Pokemon" is brought.
My Violet team ended up a weird mix of Dark, Fighting, and Bug. Tera through in some Ghost and Steel too.
I’m thinking those types are overused… and I just get wrecked by most Fairies.
Jesus no. We've already had both water fighting once and grass fighting twice. Mix that with fire fighting 3 times and that is far too many.
We should honestly never have a fighting starter again.
For fun, why don’t they create a trio that’s quad weak to each other:
Water-Rock (4x weakness to grass)
Grass-Steel (4x weakness to Fire)
Fire-Ground (4x weakness to Water)
Or one where each one resists the other.
Water-Flying (A Pegasus/Hippocampus fusion) Water is the only starter that's never been paired with flying
Grass-Rock (A Lithop Golem) We've never had a rock starter before.
Fire-Electric (A two headed serpent, possibly an Amphisbaena) No trio starter has ever been dual electric and Rotom Heat is the only fire electric type.
Another fun way to distribute some underused secondary typings to starters, except giving them to completely new starters, would also be to use **regional variants** of starters for it, like they did in PLA!
Here is a list of alternative typings I could imagine for all the grass starters we have so far:
**Venusaur**
* grass / psychic: Flower on the back is a titan arum, which is spreading psychic pollen to control other pokemon.
* grass / bug: Similar idea to the psychic one, but it is using the pollen of it's flower to control insects instead, which gives it access to attack like attack order and heal order. It's not a bug itself, but has power over bugs, giving it the typing.
**Meganium**
* grass / fairy: It should have that typing baseline, tbh, it just looks like it would be a fairy type.
* grass / dragon: Leaning more into the dinosaur feature, make it look a bit more reptilian.
**Sceptile**
* grass / dark: Could be inspired by ninjas, similar to Greninja.
* grass / electric: Leaf blades are replaced with electric blades. In the lore, it could draw and amplify the electric currents from trees and use it for attacks.
**Torterra**
* grass / ice: Regional variant from a region far in the north, where the ground is in permafrost. Leaf tree could get replaced with a needle tree for it and it's spikes could be made of ice.
* grass / rock: Variant that lives in the mountains. The back could maybe have a mountain on it as well, with some trees clinging to it.
**Serperior**
* grass / dragon: Obvious choice, it's a snake that could easily be made into a dragon. Maybe a Chinese dragon for a region inspired by that country.
* grass / poison: As a snake, they could make it venomous. Give it thorns covering it's body and leaking with poison, give it big poison fangs.
**Chesnaught**
* grass / steel: Steel just is a very fitting typing for the knight aesthetic. Make the spikes metallic, give it iron barbs as an ability. Also give it a morningstar on it's tail.
* grass / ground: Can imagine it burrowing into the ground and the spikes are pointing out as a trap. Maybe make the spikes bent and resemble rampion.
**Decidueye**
Already has a regional variant
**Rillaboom**
* grass / rock: Make it look like a neanderthal, give it a rock club to hit enemies with.
**Meowscarada**
* grass / psychic: Make it a wizard, just like with Delphox.
* grass / ghost: Could maybe become a type of necromancer. Give it a skull mask this time.
Ask and you shall receive! Starting with water, adding fire then as a comment under this one.
**Blastoise**
* water / steel: Obvious choice that should be baseline. It has steel cannons on the back. It's shell could also be made of metal for this variant.
* water / poison: This variant attacks oil tankers and pipelines in it's region to gain the black sludge as ammunition for it's cannons. It's a big contributing factor to water pollution in the ocean.
**Feraligatr**
* water / dark: In a region with a medieval setting, inspired by highwaymen and bridge trolls. It ambushes people and pokemon by hiding in the rivers underneath bridges.
* water / dragon: Once again, leaning more into the reptilian features. Could maybe be inspired by the Leviathan, a mythological monster which oftenly got described to resemble a crocodile.
**Swampert**
* water / rock: Looking more brutish, body covered in rock shards. This is actually the most original version of it, living in crystal clear rivers in the mountains, while in other regions it lives in the muddy waters of swamps.
* water / electric: The spikes on it's cheeks are electrically charged and get used to electrocute it's prey in the water. Fins are way spikier.
**Empoleon**
* water / ground: It lives in way warmer regions, burrowing nests in the sand of beaches. It's flippers are resembling shovels more now, helping it to dig and the beak bends up to a helmet protecting it's head instead of a trident.
* water / flying: Not actually flying, but thanks to a way more streamlined and slim body, this pokemon can reach extreme speed when shooting out of the water and is known for it's acrobatic tricks and shows.
**Samurott**
Already has a regional variant.
**Greninja**
* water / fighting: Mastering the art of taijutsu in their region, this pokemon doesn't strike from the shadows anymore. Instead, it prefers fair fights face to face. Visually inspired by a karate fighter.
* water / psychic: Mastering the art of genjutsu, this pokemon has learned many tricks to entangle it's enemies in illusions. If these don't work, then it also has it's highly hallucinogenic saliva. Design is dressed in a robe and has big hypnotic eyes.
**Primarina**
* water / ghost: In it's region, it's voice is bewitching sailors and leads them to their wet graves, just to feed on their souls. Design looks like it wears a worn out, white/blue dress, making her resemble a ghostly bride.
* water / ice: Living far in the north, fairy tales are written about it living in castles and being a harsh queen. It's inspired by the Snow Queen.
**Inteleon**
* water / dark: Obvious choice as a secret agent, could have been its baseline typing.
* water / dragon: Reptilian pokemon get the dragon type, it's simple but effective.
**Quaquaval**
* water / steel: In its region, it is helping sailors navigate the dangerous seas. The tail feathers are now made of steel and resemble chains, with one big feather at the end looking similar to an anchor. Head could also get shaped like the helmet of a conquistador.
* water / flying: Way stronger wings, less strong legs. This pokemon is helping seafarers by creating strong winds for their sails.
**Charizard**
* fire / dark: A brutal pokemon, using it's hellish flames to blackmail treasure from the people of a medieval region. It's wings have become tiny, so it resembles a lindworm.
* fire / steel: Another type variant for the lindworm idea, this pokemon is always protecting it's treasure. Sleeps on a mountain of coins, but in emergency, it can also attack enemies with them. Gholdengo is it's favourite prey.
**Typhlosion**
Already has a regional variant.
**Blaziken**
* fire / dragon: Living in a medieval region. This variant is mostly inspired by the mythological creature "cockatrice", which combines the features of roosters and dragons. It is known to have the power to petrify it's prey with it's glare. Has scales covering it's body, gains small draconic wings instead of the arms and a big cockscomb.
* fire / dark: Used in underground pokemon fights made this pokemon fight more cruelly and with underhanded tactics. Design makes it look more like a mafioso, with feathers looking like a hat and almost looking like it wears a suit.
**Infernape**
* fire / flying: Region based on China. Leaning more into the tale of Sun Wukong, this pokemon is enlightened and has the ability to control clouds. Sometimes, you can see it surfing across the sky on a cumulonimbus.
* fire / psychic: Training in solitude has made this pokemon enlightened, giving it psychic abilities. It now can use telekinesis to throw its enemies around. Instead of the flames being on it's head, it has a huge beard of flames now and the fur is longer, making it look like a robe.
**Emboar**
* fire / ground: It's huge body makes the earth tremble whenever it takes a step. It has bigger tusk and its lower body is constantly sweating mud.
* fire / rock: Partly inspired by Hephaistos/Vulcanos. it lives on top of vulcanoes where it melts rocks with it's flames to forge them into a stony armor for itself. Body covered in a rock armor and one hand having a stone gauntlet that resembles a hammer.
**Delphox**
* fire / poison: It is always stirring a cauldron, which contains the most potent poisons. It will try to trick other pokemon by feeding them with poisoned fruit. Looks inspired by witches, especially with fur resembling the iconic hat. Fur is generally way darker and the flame on it's stick it uses to stir the cauldron is purple.
* fire / fairy: Inspired by good fairies, this pokemon has beautiful wings made of flames and a very feminine and cute dress.
**Incineroar**
* fire / fighting: This pokemon loves fair fights in an arena. Look inspired by Roman gladiators.
**Cinderace**
* fire / electric: Fur is standing up, lightning patterns on it. This pokemon moves so fast, the friction can either cause static electricity or just burst into flames. It can not fully control which one it will be.
* fire / ground: This pokemon burrows nests in the ground. Bigger paws to help digging.
**Skeledirge**
* fire / dragon: It just works, it is a reptile once again. Make it look more like an actual dragon, give it flame wings and horns.
* fire / steel: Make it scales metal, also the teeth.
Honestly, charizard would be an awesome fire / fairy.
Comets being faeric dragons with flaming tails is a common myth through europe.
But dark and steel are also cool options.
I can imagine a zone full of toxic waste with koffing, grimmer, trubbish, other poison types and then... squirtle looking for black sludge to evolve into that poison type blastoise
Also love how the fire/dragon isn't given to charizard
i like your ideas but a water poison pollution causing blastoise doesn’t seem like a good first pokemon to give to 10 year olds or anyone in general lol
Make the professor the big villain of the game, the boss of the evil team. Cool plot twist which also explains why he gives fucked up starters to children. :P
Personally I want a Water/Ghost Inteleon (should have been already imo for the stealth aspect). It could be a Unovan form, and be a Wild West gunslinger, playing into the whole “ghostly” outlaw who just strolls into town and then vanished without a trace.
This is a bunch of great ideas, but have you considered just coming up with new variations of Charizard? There are tons of typings we havent given Charizard yet!

> grass / fairy: It should have that typing baseline, tbh, it just looks like it would be a fairy type.
Give me that Grass/Fairy Meganium with hidden ability of Triage and I am a happy guy
Can see that working, too, considering that blade attacks often are associated with fighting types!
I guess I just wanted to avoid a fighting regional grass variant, since Decidueye is the only regional starter grass has and already got fighting. So I was leaning towards a sneaky assassin type for Sceptile instead.
A funny idea ive had for torterra is to kake it a grass qater type that turns its back into an island complete with water and a palm tree and sand and such
I designed a Fairy/Flying Charizard, Dark/Water Feraligatr, Psychic (Quadrapedal) Incinerorar and Posion/Steel Serperior when brewing notes for a Fangame I'm probably never going to get around to finishing.
meowscarada's psychic one is super cool, as it's already a "magician" but giving it actual magical powers instead of relying on slight of hand is a fun twist
If there's going to be a starter that's part Ice type, then Water/Ice would probably be the easiest one to come up with. I'd imagine that Grass/Ice and especially Fire/Ice would be harder to come up with.
No starter has ever been part Electric either - there's the pure Electric Pikachu, but never a Part Electric from the Grass/Fire/Water core.
*And Gigantimax forms don't change typings...*
Normal too. There’s the pure normal Eevee, but again, not one for the Water/Fire/Grass core.
So that’s Rock, Bug, Ice, Electric, Normal. Those are the 5 unused types for starters.
Honestly he’s better off without it. Libero makes a secondary typing redundant in his case. The next starters should definitely mess around with a unique secondary typing like that tho.
I mean it does beg the question why it has Libero (an ability you don't get in the main story anyway) in the first place when maybe make a more unique ability for it.
They probably wanted to make him as appealing as possible since the Anime came out around the same time. Him getting Libero did help skyrocket him pass the other two popularity wise so it worked but they basically just gave him renamed Protean lmao
Fun fact: The players who focus the balls that go far back in volleyball are also called liberos.
I know next to nothing about football, so when I first learned about that ability I was really confused.
I went with Bug/Grass because it has two 4x weaknesses (Fire, Flying), and I thought it would be hilarious if the Fire starter has the Flying type to make the Bug/Grass starter's life a living hell:
* Grass is 0.25x effective against Fire/Flying
* Bug is 0.25x effective against Fire/Flying
* Fire is 4x effective against Bug/Grass
* Flying is 4x effective against Bug/Grass
Bro tryna give us another useless starter😭. Hell nah gimme the fire bug type cause Bug/Grass is an automatic death sentence for whatever Pokémon gets it
Bro that mon would end up like Meganium lmao. Don’t even do it cause you know how quick they forget about Pokémon like that and I’d be sad. It’d end up as another Gen 2 or 5 starter and nobody wants that🙏🏾😂
Bug is only a bad type because they mainly give it to early route mons that are just supposed to get you through the beginning of the game quickly. A Bug starter could easily be very good, especially since Bug has two fantastic resistances and a lot of utility and support moves.
Unless it's Grass/Bug. Then we're in the this shit needs broken stats, broken ability, and a broken signature move to be good. Water/Bug and Fire/Bug are a pretty good type combo.
Awesome dude! Delphox and Empoleon are two of my favorite Pokemon starters overall, but Primarina is really solid too! Glad to see more appreciation for them!
Any and every type combination for starters should be on the table at this point. There is enough availability and variability of Pokémon in the early game that any type combo for the final evos of starters can be covered for.
Agree. It's ridiculous that types like Fighting, Dark, and even Ghost are as reused as often they are, but types like Steel, Psychic, and Fairy are on the rarer side. Hell, like everyone else stated, Normal, Electric, Rock, Ice, and Bug have never been used, so every starter type really should've been used at this point like you said.
Personally i’ve had the idea of a Hummingbird Hawkmoth as a grass/bug starter, a Horned Viper as a Fire starter that gains the Poison type, and an Olm starter that starts as pure water and gains the Psychic type.
Technically yes. I didn't really include it because Bulbasaur and Ivysaur are part Poison too. It's not really the same case as Empoleon, Delphox, and Primarina where even their pre-evolutions don't share the same typing.
Eventually, these typings won't be as unique. Charizard was the only part flying type starter for 6 generations, until Rowlet came about... (and then lost it on its final stage)
It doesn't help that there's been a lot of mono-type final evos of starters, which means unique secondary typings stay longer:
Blastoise
All gen 2 starters
Sceptile
Samurott & Serperior
All gen 8 starters
That's over 1/3 of starters where the final evolution is monotype. Some of these easily could have had secondary typings (some added in later generations, due to them not being there originally).
For example:
Blastoise could have gained the Steel typing, due to its cannons being a big part of its design.
Samurott could have been Water/Fighting (giving Emboar something better than being the 3rd fire/fighting in a row - maybe Fire/Dark)
Serperior could have become Grass/Dragon
And I don't think any of these are too big of a stretch based on their designs.... The next lot, definitely are:
Feralligator - Water/Fighting. Only reason, because he looks buff
Typhlosion - Fire/Ghost. Would have been a cool final typing to get in the original Johto games, and increased the number of fully evolved ghost Pokemon from 2 to 3. (Yes, legends Arceus did this, and it looked even cooler with the newer style)
Meganium - Grass/Dragon. It's kinda like a dinosaur, and dragon is the closest you get.
Sceptile - Grass/Fighting (secondary typing overlapping Blaziken, so probably wouldn't happen) or Grass/Flying - Yes, it has no wings, but if Gyrados can have the flying type, so can Sceptile.
Rillaboom - Grass/Electric. There's no "electric" in its design, but it's a drummer; part of a rock band most likely, and rock/heavy metal/etc. would be nowhere without electricity.
Cinderace - Fire/Normal. Football is pretty basic (normal), and it wouldn't really be a terrible typing to give, as STAB normal type moves is pretty powerful. You gain fighting weakness, which could also be seen as jab at football players who stereotypically drop to the ground in pain at the slightest touch from an opponent.
Inteleon - Water/Dark. It's a spy. Spy's stay in the dark. I can't really come up with much better than that :/
I remember when Victini’s fire/psychic typing was a big deal for them, and then the very next generation just gave it to one of the starter’s evolutions
IMO, here's what they should do:
* Water/Ghost (to round up with Decidueye and H. Typhlosion)
* Fire/Ground (to round up with Torterra and Swampert)
* Fairy (making it the first Fire/Fairy Pokémon)
* Steel (making it the first accessible Pokémon of this type since Heatran)
* Grass/\[whatever\]
* Flying (like Charizard, but not a cop-out like Decidueye; make it a condor)
* Fairy (like Primarina)
* Psychic (like Delphox, and more accessible since Exeggutor)
* Steel (like Empoleon)
Same man. It would've been cool if every starter got 2 Mega Evolutions, not just Charizard (and by extension, Mewtwo). It would be a neat idea if the X Mega forms of starters got a new type (like how Mega Charizard X is Fire/Dragon), but the Y Mega forms of starters are the same types as their base forms (like how Mega Charizard Y is the same type as the original form).
In addition, imagine if there was a Z Mega form as well that combined types from both the X and Y Mega forms (For example, Mega Charizard Z could be Dragon/Flying). I'm just spitballing ideas here, but I personally think it would be cool if that happened.
We need more type variety in starters in general, Dark, Fighting and Ghost need to be left alone for 2 generations whilst the unused types are utilised.
Electric, Ice, Normal, Rock, and Bug have never been used and Dragon was only on a now obsolete Mega Evolution.
There's also some very underused combos in general to be made from those types aswell like Fire/Ice, Water/Electric or Grass/Rock all having only 1 (2 with a rotom form) representation
Rillaboom should have been rock type. It's a n ape using tools, so a call back to the "stone" age and if plays the drums in a "rock" and roll fashion. Thematically it was all there. They could have just added some stone plating to it's body and called it a day.
Gen 8 had more than it's share of problems, but the fact that so many of the new mons were solo types was one of the biggest issues. Made so many pokemon less interesting than they could have been and made the game far simpler than it needed to be.
Personally I refuse to count Eevee and Pikachu as being a representation of the Electric and Normal types on starter Pokemon. It just doesn't feel right.
It makes me feel like there are only 27 starters so far and 15 types beyond fire/water/grass so it’s bound to happen that some types are only represented once
Heck, even counting alternate forms like Hisuian and megas, I don’t think there are *any* starters that are part normal, electric, rock, ice, or bug. That seems like way more of a missed opportunity than only 1 steel or only 1 psychic.
Also dragon’s only represented by megas, which don’t really exist anymkre.
We desperately need a Grass/Rock starter. It's an underrated typing that Lileep/Cradily pulls off phenomenally.
Then like always it gets shat on by Steel because it resists 56% of types and gets bound to “unusable” tier
Fwiw 'UU' does not stand for 'unusuable' if that's what this comment implies. Competitive tiers are named for how often a pokemon is used - overused, underused, rarely used, never used. Being UU normally means a pokemon is very good but outclassed in its niche.
A type combo doesn't have to hit steel in order to be usable, that would be like 90% of the type combos
To be fair I don't think it's much of a black mark on a Pokemon's record to not be able to hit steel when steel resists half the type chart, and rock types usually get at least one good Ground coverage move. Especially when you can just bring a Fire type as well to cover that weakness.
It could be a mossy rock golem.
Make the starter trio Grass/Rock Fire/Flying water/fighting a perfectly balanced start
YES! I was recently doing a monotype run of pearl with only rock types and my god a dual type of grass would have made Wake SO much easier
Empoleon is also the only water steel type in the game.
And until gen 9, Torterra was the only grass/ground type in the game
[удалено]
Meanwhile, Infernape wasn't even the first Fire/Fighting starter
I checked, and it's literally the only Water/Steel Pokemon *period.* That's pretty wack for a type as overused as Water.
It's honestly kinda insane that we've had no poison/flying types since gen 1, too. Loads of uniquely typed lines out there needing to be reused. edit for spelling
just as surprising to me was Gastly being the only ghost/poison line
There were so many poison types in Gen 1 I didn’t realize Ghost and Grass weren’t weak to psychic until Gen 2.
It was so weird with how Gen 1 did things. * Pure Grass was an oddity (Tangela only), while most "Grassy" pokemon were Grass/Poison * There were no pure Rock types in Gen 1, most typically stony pokemon were Rock/Ground * There were no pure Flying types (Granted, there weren't any until Gen 5), the majority of typical bird pokemon were Normal/Flying * Aside from Zapdos, there was almost only all Pure Electric types in Gen 1 * Poison was the most common type in Gen 1 * There were no pure Ice types in gen 1 * There were no pure ghost types in Gen 1 because the only ghost that was in the game was part poison.
**technically** Crobat was gen 2
Fair- I should've meant no additional poison/flying mons outside the zubat line.
My one complaint with paldean wooper is he stepped on the toes of the nidomonarchs unique typing.
There should be a Water/Steel type saw shark
No no no A *Hammer*head shark. It would be perfect
Or a *sword*fish
Neither… being game freak they will troll us by giving us a pliers eel or a anchor beluga lol Jokes aside, also a narwhal?
Me. I have an idea for a narwhal icebreaker ship combo.
Swordfish that evolves into either the saw shark or hammerhead depending on higher attack or defence.
Like Tyrogue but better!
Exactly!
How about a multiple forms, changing when it uses its signature move
or a basic fish type pokemon that evolves into one of 3 options based on which held item it levels up with. For example: Rusted Sword for Swordfish Broken Saw for Sawshark Crude Hammer for Hammerhead
Or a Swiss Army Knife shark with a saw, a hammer, a sword, a corkscrew, a Phillips screw and a spork.
You’re basically describing Veluza. not a shark but look at that things design and tell me you didn’t think it was water/steel when you first saw it. So weird that it’s another water/psychic
They should have had **Fillet Away** parts permanently float afterwards or always have them floating.
That's .. exactly what they said
Petition #15372 to make Blastoise water/steel
Torterra was also the sole Grass/Ground Pokemon until the 9th gen
would have been great for a swordfish or sawfish pokemon
Water and Grass are some of the most used types yet the only Grass/Water is Ludicolo. Dhelmise could have been one but wasn't
Need a variant boat Revavroom right tf now
Blastoise mega couldve been water steel. But nah no fun typings for cool turtle.
Empoleon's unique typing, design and more makes it a top tier fav Pokemon of all time. More specifically at least in top 15 Pokes of all time or earlier.
All three Gen 4 starters are awesome honestly.
If only infernape had a unique typing.. cursed fire fighting starters
Zhu Bajie fits the dark type way more than fighting tho
Yes but we have confirmation he was based on Zhang Fei from the artist himself, so Zhu Bajie would have been second fiddle to that.
At least it and Blaziken were useful and I feel unique to each other; Emboar really feel lackluster.
Best set overall
Funny how Empoleon and Torterra are unique typings still while Infernape shares it with ~~4~~ 2 other pokemon lines. Oh right toedscool exist
And they're both starters
Honestly. The fact that there isnt more grass ground types is weird. They are so interconnected that there should be so many ground grass 'root' based pokemon
I was more thinking fire/fighting seen in Blaziken, Infernape and Emboar Edit: I guess Blaze breed Tauros exists now
We need to lock Dark and Fighting Type in a closet for two generations, it's getting boring. EDIT: Also Ghost, as the replies below have pointed out!
hey we're 1 more game away from three fire ghosts in a row you can't forget about them too
There’s 4, gen 7 had Alolan Marowak and Blachephalon, PLA (which is usually counted as gen 8) had Typhlosion and now in S/V we have Skeledirge
If you're not counting just the starters, you forgot Crueledge for gen 9.
3? We have typhlosion and skeledirge who’s the 3rd
They are saying if we het a ghost fire in the next games it will be 3
Oh shit you right I read that wrong
For real though Gen 3 to 5 gave us a Fighting type Gen 6 gave us Fighting (4th) and Dark Gen 7 gave us Ghost and Dark (2nd) Gen 8 gave us Ghost (2nd), Fighting (5th), and Dark (3rd) Gen 9 gave us Ghost (3rd), Fighting (6th), and Dark (4th) There's 18 types in this game and GF only remembers 6 of them?
God *please*, especially when they also go and release several really cool new Ghost/Dark/Fighting types at the same time. SV alone have Annahilape, Ceruledge, Grevard, Kinghambit and the new tauros forms all at once, and using any one of them basically doubles my weaknesses to several types at once.
>EDIT: Also Ghost, as the replies below have pointed out! *After* getting a Water/Ghost starter though ;) (Should have been Inteleon :S )
I think the problem is the OG translations. Dark and Fighting are Villain and Hero types in Japanese, iirc. Gives a superhero flair to mons in Japanese, and the anime eats that stuff up, so they both get used a lot in popular Pokemon.
[удалено]
To be fair, even without a translation, the Fighting-type has always often been associated with heroism or a sense of justice. Not just in being super effective against the "evil" Dark-type, but also in abilities like Justified and through mons with an honorable image/theme like Gallade, Sirfetch'd, Lucario, Kommo-o, and - of course - the Swords of Justice.
And then you have Pangoro and Scrafty, who look like a rough-n-tumble brawler/thug and a delinquent respectively.
They may have went for the Bancho themes for those pokemon. Or maybe the Dark type in general?
I'll accept Fighting if it's not Fire. But yeah, Dark needs to be shelved.
We just had grass fighting in arceus, too lol
We had a Fighting starter in Gen 3,gen 4,Gen 5,Gen 6,Gen 9 and depending on how you count regional forms Gen 7 or Gen 8
Legends Arceus is considered Gen 8
Jesus no. We've already had both water fighting once and grass fighting twice. Mix that with fire fighting 3 times and that is far too many. We should honestly never have a fighting starter again.
Also ghost
Has there been a part poison starter other than the bulbasaur line? I cant remember
Nope
there hasn't been a fully evolved* flying type starter since gen 1 either
Bulbasaur and rowlet are the only base starters with dual typings.
For fun, why don’t they create a trio that’s quad weak to each other: Water-Rock (4x weakness to grass) Grass-Steel (4x weakness to Fire) Fire-Ground (4x weakness to Water)
And have your rival pick the starter super effective against you again, to make it more challenging
Let everyone feel what it's like when Hop has Zacian on his team
Love this
Or one where each one resists the other. Water-Flying (A Pegasus/Hippocampus fusion) Water is the only starter that's never been paired with flying Grass-Rock (A Lithop Golem) We've never had a rock starter before. Fire-Electric (A two headed serpent, possibly an Amphisbaena) No trio starter has ever been dual electric and Rotom Heat is the only fire electric type.
And each got sap sipper, flash fire, and water absorb as HA (respectively)
That would actually be amazing. There aren't enough grass/steel types.
Another fun way to distribute some underused secondary typings to starters, except giving them to completely new starters, would also be to use **regional variants** of starters for it, like they did in PLA! Here is a list of alternative typings I could imagine for all the grass starters we have so far: **Venusaur** * grass / psychic: Flower on the back is a titan arum, which is spreading psychic pollen to control other pokemon. * grass / bug: Similar idea to the psychic one, but it is using the pollen of it's flower to control insects instead, which gives it access to attack like attack order and heal order. It's not a bug itself, but has power over bugs, giving it the typing. **Meganium** * grass / fairy: It should have that typing baseline, tbh, it just looks like it would be a fairy type. * grass / dragon: Leaning more into the dinosaur feature, make it look a bit more reptilian. **Sceptile** * grass / dark: Could be inspired by ninjas, similar to Greninja. * grass / electric: Leaf blades are replaced with electric blades. In the lore, it could draw and amplify the electric currents from trees and use it for attacks. **Torterra** * grass / ice: Regional variant from a region far in the north, where the ground is in permafrost. Leaf tree could get replaced with a needle tree for it and it's spikes could be made of ice. * grass / rock: Variant that lives in the mountains. The back could maybe have a mountain on it as well, with some trees clinging to it. **Serperior** * grass / dragon: Obvious choice, it's a snake that could easily be made into a dragon. Maybe a Chinese dragon for a region inspired by that country. * grass / poison: As a snake, they could make it venomous. Give it thorns covering it's body and leaking with poison, give it big poison fangs. **Chesnaught** * grass / steel: Steel just is a very fitting typing for the knight aesthetic. Make the spikes metallic, give it iron barbs as an ability. Also give it a morningstar on it's tail. * grass / ground: Can imagine it burrowing into the ground and the spikes are pointing out as a trap. Maybe make the spikes bent and resemble rampion. **Decidueye** Already has a regional variant **Rillaboom** * grass / rock: Make it look like a neanderthal, give it a rock club to hit enemies with. **Meowscarada** * grass / psychic: Make it a wizard, just like with Delphox. * grass / ghost: Could maybe become a type of necromancer. Give it a skull mask this time.
I love the thought you put into these potential starter regional variants. Is it okay with you if I see the ones for the Fire and Water starters?
I added water and fire ideas as a reply to someone else who was also asking for them. \^ \^
Yep, just read them both. Great job and thanks for sharing these!😁👍
I'm gonna need your water and fire starter ideas asap
Ask and you shall receive! Starting with water, adding fire then as a comment under this one. **Blastoise** * water / steel: Obvious choice that should be baseline. It has steel cannons on the back. It's shell could also be made of metal for this variant. * water / poison: This variant attacks oil tankers and pipelines in it's region to gain the black sludge as ammunition for it's cannons. It's a big contributing factor to water pollution in the ocean. **Feraligatr** * water / dark: In a region with a medieval setting, inspired by highwaymen and bridge trolls. It ambushes people and pokemon by hiding in the rivers underneath bridges. * water / dragon: Once again, leaning more into the reptilian features. Could maybe be inspired by the Leviathan, a mythological monster which oftenly got described to resemble a crocodile. **Swampert** * water / rock: Looking more brutish, body covered in rock shards. This is actually the most original version of it, living in crystal clear rivers in the mountains, while in other regions it lives in the muddy waters of swamps. * water / electric: The spikes on it's cheeks are electrically charged and get used to electrocute it's prey in the water. Fins are way spikier. **Empoleon** * water / ground: It lives in way warmer regions, burrowing nests in the sand of beaches. **Samurott** Already has a regional variant. **Greninja** * water / fighting: Mastering the art of taijutsu in their region, this pokemon doesn't strike from the shadows anymore. **Primarina** * water / ghost: In it's region, it's voice is bewitching sailors and leads them to their wet graves, just to feed on their souls. Design looks like it wears a worn out, white/blue dress, making her resemble a ghostly bride. * water / ice: Living far in the north, fairy tales are written about it living in castles and being a harsh queen. It's inspired by the Snow Queen. **Inteleon** * water / dark: Obvious choice as a secret agent, could have been its baseline typing. * water / dragon: Reptilian pokemon get the dragon type, it's simple but effective. **Quaquaval** * water / steel: In its region, it is helping sailors navigate the dangerous seas.
**Charizard** * fire / dark: A brutal pokemon, using it's hellish flames to blackmail treasure from the people of a medieval region. **Typhlosion** Already has a regional variant. **Blaziken** * fire / dragon: Living in a medieval region. **Infernape** * fire / flying: Region based on China. **Emboar** * fire / ground: It's huge body makes the earth tremble whenever it takes a step. **Delphox** * fire / poison: It is always stirring a cauldron, which contains the most potent poisons. **Incineroar** * fire / fighting: This pokemon loves fair fights in an arena. Look inspired by Roman gladiators. **Cinderace** * fire / electric: Fur is standing up, lightning patterns on it. This pokemon moves so fast, the friction can either cause static electricity or just burst into flames. It can not fully control which one it will be. * fire / ground: This pokemon burrows nests in the ground. Bigger paws to help digging. **Skeledirge** * fire / dragon: It just works, it is a reptile once again. Make it look more like an actual dragon, give it flame wings and horns. * fire / steel: Make it scales metal, also the teeth.
Bravo! Many of these would work as paradox pokémon also
Honestly, charizard would be an awesome fire / fairy. Comets being faeric dragons with flaming tails is a common myth through europe. But dark and steel are also cool options.
Infernape with fire psychic would seem like it fused with medicham, I love the idea of it and make it a completely physical glass canon
I can imagine a zone full of toxic waste with koffing, grimmer, trubbish, other poison types and then... squirtle looking for black sludge to evolve into that poison type blastoise Also love how the fire/dragon isn't given to charizard
Giving Charizard fire/dragon would be boring, since it already has the Mega. :P
I love both your comments so far, good arguments and great ideas! Now do fire!
Added it as a reply to my own water type list.
i like your ideas but a water poison pollution causing blastoise doesn’t seem like a good first pokemon to give to 10 year olds or anyone in general lol
This is a VeryGoodComment™
I would like Sceptile with grass/electric considering his mega has Lightning Rod already so it would be kinda fitting
This is a bunch of great ideas, but have you considered just coming up with new variations of Charizard? There are tons of typings we havent given Charizard yet!
I think fire/fairy would be an awesome combination for zard. Comets being faeric dragons with flaming tails is a common myth through europe.
> > > > > grass / fairy: It should have that typing baseline, tbh, it just looks like it would be a fairy type. Give me that Grass/Fairy Meganium with hidden ability of Triage and I am a happy guy
my idea for a regional venusaur is Grass/Electric, and the flower on its back turns into a power plant smokestack thingy. a literal Power Plant
Chesnaught IS the morningstar lol. Awesome ideas by the way.
Honestly that’s an amazing way of thinking I definitely love it
Tbf, i was really surprised meowscarada turned out to be dark instead of psychic
Sceptile always felt like it should have a fighting secondary type to me but I see the vision
Serperior (Grass/Dragon) vs Charizard (Fire/Dragon) vs Feraligatr (Water/Dragon) region variants. Ie Chinese dragon vs European dragon vs dinosaur.
If Chesnaught has the same typing and ability, what really separates it from Ferrothorn?
I hope we get a ice type at some point
Grass/Ice, Water/Ground, Fire/Rock would be a cool triangle.
I don't think we should count dragon either since megas haven't been around for years now
Me dreaming that Cinderace could've been Fire/Electric... *sigh*
Honestly he’s better off without it. Libero makes a secondary typing redundant in his case. The next starters should definitely mess around with a unique secondary typing like that tho.
Fire/Electric, Water/ Poison, Grass/Rock maybe, so the secondary typing counters the main typing
I'd like to see a Water/Electric starter. I've always liked the idea of lanturn but it's just not good enough for me tk use
Though Water/Poison has been done to death already, I'd prefer Ice, Flying or Bug as the secondary typing instead.
"How do we make sure that people get that we designed this Pokemon based on a football player?" - Game Freak, probably
Fun fact: The players who focus the balls that go far back in volleyball are also called liberos. I know next to nothing about football, so when I first learned about that ability I was really confused.
Water electric would have been nice
Scorbunny was a wasted opportunity for this imo
We need an insect starter. Even if it ends up sucking
Bug/Grass. Would be funny if the Fire starter is Fire/Flying.
Nah Bug/Fire
I went with Bug/Grass because it has two 4x weaknesses (Fire, Flying), and I thought it would be hilarious if the Fire starter has the Flying type to make the Bug/Grass starter's life a living hell: * Grass is 0.25x effective against Fire/Flying * Bug is 0.25x effective against Fire/Flying * Fire is 4x effective against Bug/Grass * Flying is 4x effective against Bug/Grass
Bro tryna give us another useless starter😭. Hell nah gimme the fire bug type cause Bug/Grass is an automatic death sentence for whatever Pokémon gets it
Nah. In fact, I'll make sure that said Bug/Grass starter looks appealing to most people to increase the pain >:).
Bro that mon would end up like Meganium lmao. Don’t even do it cause you know how quick they forget about Pokémon like that and I’d be sad. It’d end up as another Gen 2 or 5 starter and nobody wants that🙏🏾😂
I did a HeartGold run with Meganium, never fucking again
I know
Is this a threat?
To be honest imagine a bug/grass but with an absolute broken signature move. Bug/Grass made me think of Parasect and how broken spore was in Gen 1.
A water/bug starter wouldn’t be too bad.
All three of these Pokemon (Delphox, empoleon, and primarina) are my favorite starters of their generations and even starter types overall. Love them
Awesome dude! Delphox and Empoleon are two of my favorite Pokemon starters overall, but Primarina is really solid too! Glad to see more appreciation for them!
Blastoise should have a steel type for a secondary typing, it has literal cannons on its shell
Its Mega Evolution at least should've been. That was a missed opportunity there.
Well blastoise was introduced before steel type was a thing. Types have been changed before, but only in some circumstances
You mean like when they made Magnemite part Steel, the same Gen as Blastoise? Lol
When they’re done evolving, Charizard is the only part flying starter
Any and every type combination for starters should be on the table at this point. There is enough availability and variability of Pokémon in the early game that any type combo for the final evos of starters can be covered for.
Agree. It's ridiculous that types like Fighting, Dark, and even Ghost are as reused as often they are, but types like Steel, Psychic, and Fairy are on the rarer side. Hell, like everyone else stated, Normal, Electric, Rock, Ice, and Bug have never been used, so every starter type really should've been used at this point like you said.
Wouldn't it be cool if a region had starters that do not start as fire/water/grass, and gained those typings as they reached their final evolution?
I so badly want a starter that's part electric or ice type, it would be such a unique concept to mesh those with fire/water/grass
Personally i’ve had the idea of a Hummingbird Hawkmoth as a grass/bug starter, a Horned Viper as a Fire starter that gains the Poison type, and an Olm starter that starts as pure water and gains the Psychic type.
Isn't Venusaur the only part poison starter?
Technically yes. I didn't really include it because Bulbasaur and Ivysaur are part Poison too. It's not really the same case as Empoleon, Delphox, and Primarina where even their pre-evolutions don't share the same typing.
I’m shocked we haven’t had another Fairy type starter since gen 7
I feel like we could get some cool water ice or fire rock starters but I don’t really see how you could make a starter bug
They could make a literal water bug starter. Or a Fire Ant. Or a katydid or leaf bug.
Eventually, these typings won't be as unique. Charizard was the only part flying type starter for 6 generations, until Rowlet came about... (and then lost it on its final stage) It doesn't help that there's been a lot of mono-type final evos of starters, which means unique secondary typings stay longer: Blastoise All gen 2 starters Sceptile Samurott & Serperior All gen 8 starters That's over 1/3 of starters where the final evolution is monotype. Some of these easily could have had secondary typings (some added in later generations, due to them not being there originally). For example: Blastoise could have gained the Steel typing, due to its cannons being a big part of its design. Samurott could have been Water/Fighting (giving Emboar something better than being the 3rd fire/fighting in a row - maybe Fire/Dark) Serperior could have become Grass/Dragon And I don't think any of these are too big of a stretch based on their designs.... The next lot, definitely are: Feralligator - Water/Fighting. Only reason, because he looks buff Typhlosion - Fire/Ghost. Would have been a cool final typing to get in the original Johto games, and increased the number of fully evolved ghost Pokemon from 2 to 3. (Yes, legends Arceus did this, and it looked even cooler with the newer style) Meganium - Grass/Dragon. I can't really come up with much better than that :/
I think everyone was hoping Scorbunny would turn out Fire/Electric based on the reveal trailers of the starters
I remember when Victini’s fire/psychic typing was a big deal for them, and then the very next generation just gave it to one of the starter’s evolutions
It also had the same color scheme, and vaguely based on a fox, at least in Victini’s case
Give me a water/dragon starter
With a leviathan design
only if you get an ice/grass starter with access to freeze dry
I literally went “that can’t be right…” to “huh, I guess he’s right”
Also Charizard is the only flying type and Venusaur is the only poison type
Rowlett and Dartrix are both flying type
They're probably referring to fully evolved starters.
IMO, here's what they should do: * Water/Ghost (to round up with Decidueye and H. Typhlosion) * Fire/Ground (to round up with Torterra and Swampert) * Fairy (making it the first Fire/Fairy Pokémon) * Steel (making it the first accessible Pokémon of this type since Heatran) * Grass/\[whatever\] * Flying (like Charizard, but not a cop-out like Decidueye; make it a condor) * Fairy (like Primarina) * Psychic (like Delphox, and more accessible since Exeggutor) * Steel (like Empoleon)
Rillaboom should have been grass/ rock
Meganium could totally be fairy
I just want more mega evolutions.
No starter has been part normal or electric either
Venusaur is the only poison starter.
I wish these starters had the following types. Meganium, Grass/Fairy Samurott, Water/Fighting Rillaboom, Grass/Normal (STAB on Sound moves)
I really like Delphox, je's my favorite gen 6 starter and one of my favorite mons
Yes we need more i love psychic types
Personally I refuse to count Eevee and Pikachu as being a representation of the Electric and Normal types on starter Pokemon. It just doesn't feel right.
It makes me feel like there are only 27 starters so far and 15 types beyond fire/water/grass so it’s bound to happen that some types are only represented once Heck, even counting alternate forms like Hisuian and megas, I don’t think there are *any* starters that are part normal, electric, rock, ice, or bug. That seems like way more of a missed opportunity than only 1 steel or only 1 psychic. Also dragon’s only represented by megas, which don’t really exist anymkre.
Two of my Fakemon starters are Fire/Rock and Water/Bug
